Dennis Wilson
5/5
This album is such an underrated banger, experiemental in all the right ways
It contains Time, which is one of my favourite songs of all time
River Song is fantastic.
I think this album is at his best when the brass sections kick in and the songs are pounding like crazy.
So good
Moonshine has just a nice refrain at the end with lovely backing vocals to close the song out
When the brass kicks in on Dreamer during the first verse... outstanding
Rainbows - great backing vocals, lovely high pitched guitar, beautiful song
End of the Show is a great way to end it
not super into Whats Wrong and Friday Night, but the rest of it is great.
I'm leaning 5. it could be 5, if its not five, its close
PS - i DO NOT take extra tracks into consideration when scoring, but for common knowledge, the bonus tracks on disc one are INCREDIBLE. Tug of Love / Only with You /Holy Man, superb. lovely stuff, absolutely fantastic

Deep Purple
1/5
sometimes you do stuff that you wont like in the name of discovery, or science, or to see if you can be convinced your initial feelings were wrong.
For me, that was listening to Deep Purple. This is the third Deep Purple album I've had on the list so far and i have not found any of them enjoyable. And its not that its 'not my thing', the genre itself has many decent elements, but man do i hate this band
The amount of pointless drum solos are unbearable. I'm happy for Flight of the Rat, that it has a big pointless drum solo, its also the least streamed song on the album by a distance, and it's probably because it sucks
I hopefully will never have to listen to Deep Purple again after this, I am praying to the only god i know that there are no further Deep Purple albums on this list. PLEASE NO MORE

The Black Crowes
1/5
Incredibly generic
Seeing Things is good.
Thick N Thin sucks so much. That sound is everything I dont like about this genre. Woefully bad
Hard to Handle is a pale imitation of the original
Even the good parts are quite cringey
It's actually worse second time around

Elastica
2/5
this is only on this list because of the Trigger Happy theme, otherwise its pretty unremarkable. I've never heard anyway mention this band, i've never heard any of the other songs. It is quite dull and i wont listen to it after today.
Its a low to mid 2

Björk
5/5
I love this album. I had never heard it before, but it was such a good listen. I will put it in rotation from this point on.
I had really only heard Björk's second album previously, and this album isn't similar at all. It seems to be heavy influenced by a more minimal electronic sound, and i really really like it. The album is quite same-y, but in a really great way, if flows from beginning to end, you never feel the weight of it being over 55 mins.
It kind of reminds me about what I love about REM's Up, and OK Computer and maybe slightly some Sigor Ros. For me, albums like this are what this list is all about. It's great
As for a rating, I feel like I have to go with a 5, you could argue a 4, but i think it's just such an enjoyable experience and it sounds outstanding, the production is amazing, her voice is unreal. I just love it

Nina Simone
4/5
Incredibly haunting and beautiful voice. Not an album I would have ever thought to listen to myself, but its so heavy, downbeat and wonderfully orchestrated. The title tract is incredible, powerful, worth every single of its longer length.
Radiohead
4/5
Best moment on the album is the midpoint of The National Anthem which then leads to all the instruments coming in on top of each other and soloing. It's definitely a grower and i'd find it hard to hum along to, but its brilliant. Not too long, good songs all throughout
Neil Young
4/5
Cover Art is brilliant. First track Walk On is a really fun track with a real funky guitar riff. Closer is great too. Good album, great vibes
Beatles
5/5
easy 5/5 for me. One of my favourite albums of all time. The second half is incredible
Peter Gabriel
5/5
This was my first time listening to this album in full and its blown me away. Obviously Sledgehammer is incredible but theres so much more to this album. The perfect 80s pop album
The Killers
3/5
This album is an amazing example of someone blasting out of the gates on their first record and never really capturing it again. First 5 songs are very strong, some of the album tracks are interesting, 'Everything Will Be Alright' is a stand out. Between a very high 2 and a low 3, scrapes a 3
Rage Against The Machine
5/5
Classic album, not a bad track on it, on the fence between a 4 and a 5 but might just go with a 4
The Stooges
3/5
When I listened to this back in 2019, I remember it having a much bigger impact than this most recent listen. It is decent, and for 1969 way ahead of its time, but for some reason it isn't resonating as much in 2023 for me
Dolly Parton
3/5
Not something I would have ever thought to listen to. Not my thing, but its great. Short and punchy. Some of the ballads remind be of the late 60s Beegees ballads. either a very high 3 or just scrapping a 4
Aerosmith
2/5
If someone was to ask me "show me a song that shows exactly what you don't like in music", I would play them the opening riff in Toys in the Attic. By the time 'Big Ten Inch Record' played i was hoping it was possible to give the album a zero. However, it does pick up with Sweet Emotion, which is maybe my favourite Aerosmith song.
No More No More & Round and Round are decent too. Before listening to this I would have said i liked Aeromsith, but if this is supposed to be one of their better albums, maybe i don't. Between a high 1 and scrapping a 2. Sweet Emotion takes it up a notch to a 2
The Prodigy
3/5
This could grow on me even more over time. Not something I'd listen to normally but really decent. I will give it a 3 for now, but its on the borderline of a 4
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
The closer is outstanding, the title track is a top 3 Neil Young song for me. I think I prefer on the beach but I really enjoyed the album, a lot of cool loose guitar solos, very jammy. I'd go a low 4 on this one
The National
3/5
Listened to this album a couple of times in the past year. It's nice. Terrible Love is the stand out. I think its the sort of album I could get more into if I kept going back to it. I'd have to go with an extremely high 3, touching a 4 but not quite
Julian Cope
2/5
I think with enough time this album could grow on me, but the album is a little long for what it is. There are interesting bits here and there. American Lite was probably the stand out, but I can't see myself thinking about this album at any time in the future. Mid 2
Amy Winehouse
3/5
I wouldn't sit down and listen to this usually, tried it back in 2019, thought it was okay, still think its decent. I really really don't like the title track and that puts me off the album a bit, but I really really like Tears Dry On Their Own. Overall very decent, nice length, I'd give it a solid 3
The Doors
3/5
Okay album. Different than I was expecting, I don't think I'll think too much about it after. Mid 3
Malcolm McLaren
2/5
I wanted to hate this album as I really don't particularly like McLaren as a human, but to be honest, some of this stuff is great. Obatala is an outstanding opener, Buffalo Girls and Double Dutch very good. I'm probably going to regret this, but I'm going to go a very very low 4 on this.
Caetano Veloso
4/5
Very interesting album, really enjoyed it, fun. A high 3/ low 4
Michael Jackson
1/5
I cant separate the art from the artist when it comes to this creep so I'm not listening to any michael Jackson albums. Instead I listened to Band on the Run and Illmatic and had a much better time
Elvis Costello
5/5
I love this album. Allison is such a classic and the rest of the album doesn't miss. Was between a High 4 and a 5, think I have to go with a 5
Dr. Dre
4/5
I dont think snoop has ever sounded this good. I could do without the skits, they haven't aged well at all. But all in all its outstanding. Really good vibes. Scrapes a 4
U2
5/5
I usually saw that Joshua Tree and Achtung are 1 & 2 when it comes to U2, but War is probably as good as at least Achtung. The obvious three; Sunday Bloody Sunday, New Years Day & Two Hearts are obviously brilliant but Surrender is a really low key underrated u2 hem. Seconds is excellent and 40 is a great tune too. This has to be a Low/Mid 5. It's outstanding
Marianne Faithfull
3/5
This could be a 3 or a 4. It's quite good, Broken English, Guilt and Why'd Ya Do It are highlights. I could see myself revisit it, which i can't say for a couple of the other albums I'd rated a 3. It's a 7.5/10. There are so many little influences dotted about throughout this album, punk, ska etc. Great voice, some great production.
Nico
3/5
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
4/5
Great album. All the Neil Young tracks are obviously gone from Spotify but this album was so enjoyable I listened to it on amazon. Our House is the stand out, classic song, but the entire thing is good. Mid 4
The Offspring
3/5
The idea of listening to this band after hearing 'Cruising California' makes me cringe. However, this album is a different ball game, Self Asteem, Keep 'em Separated and What Happened to you are the standouts. The drumming is excellent and very tight, but at times quite repetitive, backing vocals are a big highlight. Overall about as solid a 3 as you can get
Elton John
5/5
Hadn't listened to this album since 2019 in full, that time I've Seen This Movie Before was the stand out, but on this listen Harmony stood out. Such a good album full of some of Eltons best songs. Bennie may be his greatest song and the title track is just outstanding. The only criticism is that it is very long, but I'm not sure I'd want to remove any of the songs. Scrapes a 5
The Fall
2/5
Okay album, I definitely preferred everything else going on in 1979. Not as good as the punk going on at that time, not overly interesting, and I can't imagine revisiting too often. Mid 2
Simon & Garfunkel
4/5
I very much enjoyed listening to this album, but I think I just don't like Scarborough Fair. I don't think I've ever liked it and it's always put me off Simon and Garfunkel, I can't put my finger on it, it's just kind of a creepy song i don't enjoy. Homeward Bound however, is fantastic. Other Highlights include For Emily and the 59th Street Bridge Song.
I would have to go with a low 4 for the album, its short and to the point, the songs are short and sweet. Really enjoyable
2/5
This is either genius or awful and I am not smart enough to decide which. So I guess the question i need to ask myself is... did i enjoy listening to it? And again, I don't really know how to answer that. The first track was like a worldwind of noise, i felt like my brain wanted to leave my head, not sure if it was in a positive way or not. Then a few tracks in at 'Good Old Days' there was a run of somewhat enjoyable and melodic noise occurring for a while, which eventually just mushed up into one big lump.
I feel like I've become less intelligent after listening to this. I am questioning what melody is, what music do i actually like? IS this music? Is this noise? I just don't know. Am I better having listened?
The album isn't on spotify or amazon music currently, so i had to find it on youtube, i may not revisit this again, is that because of what it sounds like or because it's not handy to stream? I just don't know. I don't know anything, i don't know how to rate it, i don't know if i like it? is it a 1 or is it a 5? it can't be a 3, because it is not middle of the road. As someone born with a heart defect, i could imagine having a heart attack while 'Word for Bird' played.
I think I'm going to give it a 2/5, but it could be a 10/5, i just don't know anymore
The Rolling Stones
4/5
I like the rolling stones, but personally prefer them when they stay away from the 12 bar blues. Not a fan of the opening track and I do think the album could do with cuts here and there, but overall is a really good album.
Shine a Light is probably my favourite stones song and it and soul survivor are a great way to end off the album.
Not my fav stoned album but good. Solid 4
Paul Simon
4/5
Great album. This album shows how important it is to have a good opener. As always with Paul Simon material, there are great slices of other genres, some African music influence, even a little ska.
Its a high 4. Will deff revisit in the future
Pixies
4/5
Another day, another 4 star album. Its been a while since I last listened to this album and I've forgotten how good it is. Gigantic, Bone Machine, Where is my Mind, all classic pixies songs.
I'm going with a high four, because doolittle is better, but this is great
Parliament
5/5
If there is a better Parliament album out there I'd be very interested to hear it, because this album is outstanding. Knew it was a solid 5 after about 2 minutes. Every song is fantastic. Put of the albums I've listened to so far this is the one I'm most likely to come back to again and again.
The playing on the album is perfect nit the bass lines are just on another level. Masterful, bootsy is a genius
Baaba Maal
3/5
Senegalese music, enjoyable. I do think the album is probably 20 mins too long, but everything seems to be of a similar standard. No tracks specifically stood out, but the general vibe was good. Alot of great chanting backing vocals. Safe THREE
Thelonious Monk
3/5
This is an interesting album. I think with time it could grow on me a little more. With Thelonious Monk, I definitely prefer what they inspired, rather than their actual music itself, but the musicianship on this album is outstanding. The Piano playing is exceptional, the chemistry between the musicians is easy to hear. I've always found jazz a difficult listen, and, for me personally, not rewarding enough for how difficult i find it.
I did recognise one of the song that was covered on RHCP's 94 compilation Out In LA in the show F.U., it was nice to hear the original source
Unsure of how to rate it, I can't see a scenario where I'd go back and listen to it, but the musicianship is outstanding, so I'm between a TWO and a THREE
Röyksopp
5/5
I was initially skeptical about this record as I had assumed it would be more like late 90s/early 00 trance music. However I was completely wrong. This album seems like it would have been a big influence on Destroy Rock And Roll by Mylo (which i rate), but i think this album does what that album does, but does it better.
The vibe is ambient and chilled out, the songs are familiar, especially So Easy and Eple, the two songs that kick off the record. It is the perfect background music, but it's too good just to be in the background. It's relaxing but always interesting and it's no surprise the album has sold as many copies as it has.
I don't think i could fathom the idea of someone thinking this album was bad, it does what it does to a such a high level. It's fantastic. I'm between a high FOUR or a FIVE, but I think it's closer to a FIVE. I will revisit this album for sure.
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
This is a difficult one to tie down to a specific rating. Based on the Marley stuff that I know, this can't be his best work, but it is very decent. No More Trouble, Kinky Reggae are standouts. I love the guitar work, vocals and the harmonies are very good.
I think this album may need to sit with me longer, initial response is a high THREE, but it is pushing a FOUR by third listen through.
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
I've stated on a few different reviews that I am not really a fan of the 12 bar blues, which i think this album does verge in to at times. I think the album itself is OK, but it's not really my thing.
Highlights include Who'll Stop The Rain & Long As I Can See The Light. Who'll Stop the Rain is by far the standout song on the record. When I was I Heard It Through the Grapevine my interest did peak, I think I was expecting a sludgy rock version of it, but it ended up being a fairly similar version to the Marvin Gaye version, with an interesting guitar solo, although it did last for a long long time. It's obviously not as good as Marvin, so it seems a very strange addition to the album.
Overall, I'm between a TWO and a THREE and i guess that will depend on how generous i feel tomorrow morning. If i look at comparisons to other THREEs I've given, i prefer it to some, and think its no where near as good as others, so like George Clooney, the score is Up in the Air
Paul Simon
5/5
An easy FIVE. the album is great, particularly the front half. I will likely revisit this album constantly, love the African influence, love it all
Green Day
5/5
This is by far Greendays best record. People will argue dookie, but this album is nearly a masterpiece.
I can't give the album a FIVE (because I didn't give ratm a 5) but it's as close to a 5 as possible. The album is somewhat frontloaded, Jesus of Suburbia possibly their best ever song. While listening through the City of the Damned bit, I thought to myself that it may be greendays best part of any song they've written.
The low point of the album is She's A Rebel. That song could be on any greenday album, whereas the rest of the tracks could only be on this record.
The album is held together by the two long songs, I would have preferred the album end on Homecoming. Some of the hits are overplayed to the point where its harder to evaluate how good they are. One of the other negatives of the album are the solos, I don't want some rip roaring technical fast solo, but I theres something about them that haven't aged that well, it may be the guitar effect on the solos, but it's a minor gripe.
Upon listening to the album, it's easy to see how it lends itself to being a musical, its a rock opera and clearly a heavy influence on the Black Parade. I heard elements of Joshua tree.
The sad part about the greatness of the album is that after it, theyve not released any albums that are even vaguely listenable. This was their peak, and everything after has lived in the shadow of this superb album
VERY VERY HIGH FOUR
Michael Kiwanuka
5/5
This album is what I was looking for from this project. I love this album. I love everything about this album. I had never heard anything from the album, didn't know a thing about the artist, didn't know the genre, didn't know anything, and what a guy was a beautiful pleasant surprise.
The vibe is outstanding. I could name any song from the album and point it out as a stand out, but for right now I'll say 'I've been dazed'. At times there was a 60s aesthetic, some beautiful orchestra, amazing vocals and wonderful instrumentation. This is an album I was revisit. It's a solid FIVE.
Aretha Franklin
4/5
Classic album, what a voice, fantastic instrumentation. FOUR
The Who
3/5
This is a difficult one to grade. It's a lot better than a lot of my 3's, but i'm not sure if it's interesting enough to be a 4. At this time, I have only really listened to the Who Best of, and Who's Next. I remember Who's Next being a lot better than this.
But this album has the foundations of the band, I assumed, that they become. I like the briefness of the songs and the album in general, but the two better known songs 'My Generation' and 'The Kids Are Alright' stand out more than the rest quality wise. The bluesy balladness of 'I Don't Mind' is interesting and a highlight, with a couple of parts that remind me of She's So Heavy.
I think many aspects of this album could grow on me with revisits, but I can't imagine revisiting it too often. It reminds me more of very early Beatles music, and I feel like by '65 they'd already moved on from this kind of thing, but the positives on this album outweigh the negative.
I'm gonna say... HIGH THREE
Steely Dan
4/5
Any Major Dude with half a heart will surely tell you that this album is pretty good. At 40 mins and 10 tracks, it doesn't overstay its welcome. The opener Do It Again, and track two Dirty Work are stand outs.
I think this album could grow on me as time goes on, and I will revisit this one for sure. It's very very easy to listen to, some good choruses, very enjoyable.
This album would be easier to rate out of 10 than out of 5. I'm between a very high three and scratching a FOUR. 7.75/10... does that mean 4?
Hot Chip
4/5
I am surprised by the inclusion of this Hot Chip album as I feel other records they have made worked suit this list better.
The album itself is really enjoyable. Dancy, vibey, groovy at times. Good work, scratches a low FOUR
Bob Dylan
3/5
Definitely not my fav Dylan album. Probably not in my top 3. Like a Rolling Stone and Desolation Row are incredible but I'm not in love with the rest of the album at all. I'm giving it a THREE
Barry Adamson
1/5
In the time I've been doing this list, I've not enjoyed something less than this. I usually give an album two listens and then additional if I am enjoying it or need more clarity. With this one, I barely got through one listen. There was some song with talking over the top which was the absolute low point.
The one positive is that track 2 was good. But I will never revisit this album ever again. Didn't enjoy it whatsoever ONE
Little Richard
2/5
The positives are that all of the tracks are of the same level, however the songs all sound similar. If the songs are in the same key the bass player could just use a loop pedal, as it felt like I heard the same bass run over and over for 40mins.
The big positive is the influence its hard on some great music, but, I don't think I'll ever listen to it again. TWO
The Velvet Underground
4/5
High 3/ low 4. At the minute it's a 3, but I'm well aware that this could grow into a 4/5.
The big two highlights are Pale Blue Eyes and After Hours. The low light is Murder Mystery, which feels like its influenced alot of bad songs.
Madonna
4/5
This album was a pleasure.
I had always wanted to get round to listening to it, I was a big fan or her first album but I think some of her material is quite poor when she isn't pushing herself sonically.
William Orbit does alot of the heavy lifting on this album. His production work is outstanding. The music is very solid and at points tremendous.
Negatives: it's maybe a little baggy in the middle, but just when you think the album I'd slowing down a little, Frozen appears and carries the rest of the album.
I will give this album middle FOUR. And I may revisit it in future. Enjoyable
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
5/5
One of my favourite albums of all time. Classic from start to finish
Best song is Racing In The Street, probably a top 5 Bruce song. Something in the Night is another low key highlight
No negatives, all good. Great album
The Darkness
2/5
This review is going to be very harsh and if I'm honest that might be in part due to Justin Hawkins takes on music and how harsh he's been on certain musicians.
I will start with the positives. The biggest positive is that 3/4 of the singles from this album are outstanding. I Believe in a Thing Called Love has been overplayed but at its core its amazing. Growing on Me (a song that I said in 2003 was my song of the year) is really good, and Love is Only a Feeling is arguably the best song on the record.
But the big negative is that out of the rest of the songs only Friday Night could have been a single, because the rest of the album is really poor, dull and uninteresting and more than anything, it's incredibly insincere.
When the album is at its best it's upbeat party rock that doesn't take itself too seriously, at its worst its just bad. The low point was probably the bon jovi esque ballad toward the end of the album
I will revisit the singles and maybe Friday night, but there is a reason this band faded out into obscurity. Its part desperation and it's partly that the joke was over, and when the jokes over what is left
I'll give it a 2/5
Wu-Tang Clan
3/5
This album could scrape a 5 but unfortunately one thing holds it back are the woeful skits that appear so often.
The core of the album is very good, with songs like C.R.E.A.M, Protect ya neck etc, but the skits just drag it down massively. The album is far too long, you could lose 20 mins and improve the album but as it is... THREE
Jack White
4/5
Didn't really want to like this album but it was a really pleasant surprise. Not really into Jack White or White Stripes, but this was an enjoyable listen.
I'm between a 3 and a 4, see how I feel in the morning
Roxy Music
5/5
This album might be 5*
I listened to it about 2 months ago, which gives it an advantage against alot of the albums on this list. It sounded familiar and all the vibes I liked then shone through.
Sea Breezes is outstanding. There is a sense of fear and dread that comes from this song, yet a loose feel that's hard to explain. The guitar work is very simple but seems complicated melodically.
If There is Something is another song that stands out for its janky piano line, but still manages to have an eerie vibe.
Overall I'm between a 4 and a 5
Rush
3/5
This album is so ambitious and really enjoyable. It could easily be a pile of crap with how ambitious it is.
The first track is 20 odd mins, it's great.
I dont really know what else to say. I'm between a 3 and a 4. Will resist
Orbital
2/5
The easy criticism of this album is, its far too long. And i believe that to be true. I don't think the two songs at the end (12 mins and 15mins) are the issue, I would cut numerous songs from the middle and make the album more palatable and more manageable.
I would compare the album unfavourably to the Röyksopp album on this list. Which i found to be more interesting, but i should state that there isn't a bad song on this album, its just that its very forgettable and when i finished it, i wasn't rushing back for a second listen. I did however, give it a second listen, but I will not revisit this album unless i was using it as background music while i played a computer game.
I was originally leaning towards a 3, but I have a rule that it can only get a 3 if i would revisit the album, and i dont think i would, so gonna say a big old TWO
Stan Getz
2/5
No issues with this album at all. I can't say I'll ever revisit it, but it was enjoyable enough and short. Girl From Impania is the highlight. A high TWO
System Of A Down
3/5
This is good. Really interesting album. On first listen, I was worried that the album wouldn't have a moment like the bridge in Chop Suey, which took that song to another level, but then Spiders came on, and it was superb, maybe not the level of Chop Suey, but really good.
Definitely the heaviest album I've reviewed so far, which was a nice change. I think I will revisit this album in future, but only if i was in a certain mood, as it's very heavy and very fast.
Rating wise it is a THREE, but a high end Three.
Kate Bush
5/5
This is one of those albums that you know is a 5/5 about 20 seconds in to track 2.
Running Up that Hill has probably become overplayed in the last 2 years, buts its still fantastic, Big Sky and Hounds of Love are excellent. The album maybe loses a little momentum towards the end but the last track is excellent too.
There are similarities to So by Peter Gabriel. Really enjoyable, love this album
Morrissey
4/5
Hate the person, like the art. This album being good was a surprise to me. I had expected something slightly different, but this album has alot of elements of the late 80s that I love. I may revisit this album from time to time
I will go for a 4/5
Hole
3/5
Good solid album. I first listened to it back in 2019 and thought it was okay. I think its a bit better than that now. Biggest positive is how consistent it is.
A quite high THREE for me
Van Halen
2/5
Headline is, this is not my thing at all. I don't particularly like showy guitar for the most part. Certainly have no interest in a song like Eruption. Finger tapping etc just doesnt register with me.
There was a moment in one of the songs that had a bit of Doo-wap, which was interesting. Odd that there was a Kinks cover on the album.
I don't think i will ever listen to even a track from this album, but its not bad, it is just not my thing. Between a 1 and a 2. A one might be too harsh, but i'll see how i feel in the morning
David Crosby
4/5
Lovely chill vibe for a Tuesday morning. First Crosby solo record I have ever listened to and I enjoyed it alot. I will revisit this again
Low FOUR
Suede
4/5
Great album, great vibes, will revisit in future. Really enjoyed. Low 4
Beth Orton
4/5
A really nice surprise. I had never heard of Beth Orton before listening to this album, but within 20 seconds i knew i was gonna like this album. At times it reminds me of Aimee Mann.
Highlight is Feel to Believe. Great lyrics, great singing, really good.
The only criticism of the album would be that the bonus version of Central Reservation (the Then Again Version) is probably better than any song on the album. A really great version of the song, and it made me think that an album more in the style of this remix, would be even better than the final product
Feeling a Very High THREE or a VERY LOW FOUR... 4 i think
Supertramp
5/5
At its best this album is great. And at it's worst, it's pretty damn good.
I really enjoyed listening to this, maybe even more than Breakfast in America.
I'm between a 4 and a 5, I am leaning toward 4 but I did that with ,'So' and I regret not giving it a 5. I think this album will get better over time too. I will revisit this album
Ice T
2/5
I wish I could be more positive about this album because there are alot of good moments on this album.
However its let down by two things; skits and its length. It has no business being as long as it is. If you cut the skits and end the album with MVPs. The skits really suck.
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
I like the pet shop boys
I quite like this album
Being Boring is the highlight.
I'm going for a 4/5
Elbow
3/5
Bit disappointed by this album. I was expecting more, I wanted more songs like One Day Like This but no songs were close to that level. Starlings was okay and a couple of other songs were decent
Overall I'll go with 3/5 but disappointed
Fairport Convention
2/5
I thought I would be more interested in an album like this, but the main thing i would say is that i just cant get into it.
It's certainly not actively bad or anything remotely like that, it just doesn't hold my interest in any way. Just not my thing
I think the first track is fine, the rest of the tracks are fine. But overall, i just couldn't get into it. Can't imagine that I'd ever revisit it. 2/5
Johnny Cash
2/5
Listening to this album for the first time since 2019.
It's fine, I've never been a huge Johnny Cash fan, but the album is enjoyable. He comes across as witty and charming. The songs are ok, the performance is decent. Just not my thing really.
Between a 2 and a 3
Lynyrd Skynyrd
3/5
When 25% of an album is Tuesdays Gone & Freebird, the chances are that the album is a good album.
Other highlights include Simple Man, which is one of the stand out tracks. Tuesdays Gone is outstanding, great ballad and Free Bird is... Free Bird
This is either going to be a very low 4 or a very high 3.
PS i am still on Neil Youngs side
Kings of Leon
1/5
Of all the albums in the history of music that made this list, I genuinely can't believe that this made it.
Utter pish. It would probably sound fine in a car commercial but in no way should a band like this be on a list like this.
The only positive I can give is that eventually it ended.
Utter tosh, rubbish, boring
Arrested Development
3/5
Haven't listened to this album in over ten years. Hearing Mr Wendal for the first time in years was a delight.
Give a Man a Fish is another highlight. The album is a little too long and I wish it ended with Dawn of the Dreads which was another highlight
I think mid to high 3/5
Jeru The Damaja
3/5
I really enjoyed this album. I had never heard of it previously. I think East Coast rap has a lot of hidden gems and this is one
Very high three I think
4/5
So hard to put this album down to a numerical rating. It's very good, but it's oasis.
Negatives... Roll With It and Hey Now aren't as strong as the rest of the album. Wonderwall is kind of an issue, it's clearly a good song to some extent, but it's so overplayed that hearing it today was a bit like nails on a chalkboard. Don't Look Back in Anger doesn't have the same issue, it sounds as good as it ever did.
The positives are clear, any song on this album could be a single. Cast No Shadow and Champaign Supernova are the standouts on the album.
I'm gonna go 4, but it's a high 4
Dusty Springfield
4/5
I first listened to this album in 2019, and i remember absolutely loving it. I hadn't really listened to it since. I wondered why i liked it so much.
I think i was about 15 seconds into my listen this morning, and i completely got it all over again. The voice, the instrumentation, the song writing. The songs are so strong on this record. The opener 'Just A Little Lovin' is superb. Son of a Preacher Man doesn't need any explanation. There isn't a bad song on the record
Upon looking up the album, I hadn't realised Arif Mardin produced and did the string arrangements on the album. This adds even more gravitas to a great album.
It's a four, mid four punching to high 4, but a 4/5 none the less.
Pixies
4/5
I had always considered this album 3rd best of the pixies first three albums, but it's closer in quality to Surfer Rosa than Doolittle.
This album is at it's best in the quieter groovy moments that come in every so often. The second half The Happening is a great example of this, and maybe one of my favourite parts of any Pixies song. Gil Norton does some fantastic work in the production.
The highlights include Velouria, Dig For Fire, Havalina, Allison
I would give this album a low 4, but a 4 none the less
Death In Vegas
3/5
These kind of electronic albums are always kind of difficult to rate. Sometimes they can become background music and you lose concentration when listening, but they are never bad music, always enjoyable, but when they are something like Morning AM they leave more of an impression.
Unfortunately the song that left the most impression was Aisha, which is the worst thing on the album.
Dirge is the highlight, the rest is very steady. I think a 3 is fair, its not far away from a 2 or a 4. I would listen to it again because its inoffensive, but its lacking either a bit of punch, or a little more trip hop that would take it to the next level
I'm saying 3/5
Franz Ferdinand
5/5
YES LAD
It's a 5/5. The singles off this album are fantastic. The only bad song on the album Is Cheating on You. Every other song is great.
The Monkees
2/5
The album sounds a little like early beatles and early beegees but not really as impressive or inspiring as either. By 67 you'd hope for something a bit different. The latter half of the album is better than the first half, apart from zilch, which was a waste of time
Between a 2 and a 3 depending on how nice I feel in the morning
CHIC
4/5
Great listen, great vibe. Track 2 is not great, but the rest of the album superb. 4/5
MGMT
4/5
This is a good album, however it's close to being great.
The singles are massive, and oddly, probably some of the weirder stuff on the album. This could be one of my favourites if the album tracks were slightly more strange, but they are quite straight forward. I think the highlight from the non singles is The Youth, which reminds me or something I can't put my finger on. I like The Handshake, Of Moons Bird and Monsters is interesting.
Overall I will probably go with a low 4, but there is a chance the album could grow for me, I will likely revisit the album, it's alot more interesting that some of the albums that came out in 2007, I'm feeling generous with a
4/5
Genesis
4/5
Usually I hold the length of an album against it, usually if its over 50 mins. This album lasts one hour and 34 mins. Maybe if it was shorter i would possible give it a 5, but we are going 4/5 here.
I think in the future this well could be a 5 for me, it's genuinely one of the most interesting album I've listened to so far. But i do get a bit lost in it due to the length, but at the same time it is amazing.
I don't know that i could pick out a few songs because everything is similar in terms of sound and quality. I think if i was to revisit this album it would get better with each listen. The only issue is that, its just too long to revisit.
with all that said, High 4, very high 4. Very good
Isaac Hayes
3/5
This album lasts 45 mins and only contains 4 songs, two of which are really long cover versions.
But at the same time, it's kind of great. The voice is good but the instrumentation is great, particularly the bass and the guitar.
I'm gonna say High 3, but I was close to a 4
3/5
Quicksilver Messenger Service
2/5
Interesting album. It didn't keep my attention as much as it should have. There's alot of nice noodling on guitar and good musicianship, but overall when I was done with it, I was happy enough.
It's a high two.
2/5
4/5
Really enjoyable. Good noodling, great vocals. Will revisit. Low 4
4/5
Todd Rundgren
3/5
This album commits my two biggest fouls in albums on this list; it's far too long and has a skit.
The album itself is really good, and I genuinely believe that there is a 40min version of this album that is five star, but the album goes on for 93 mins, too much, too cluttered, too messy. And the other big negative is the content of the last track, I don't want to go too much into it, but I don't think the lyrical content has aged very well.
The penultimate track however is great as well as the first 4/5 tracks.
I cant give it a 5 but maybe be between a 3 or a 4.
Liz Phair
4/5
The choice to use a clean electric guitar instead of an acoustic guitar on songs like Shatter is pivotal in how good this album is.
Lorde
5/5
I first listened to this album in 2018 and I loved it then, my love for it as only grown since then. The album is a breeze the whole way through, I enjoy all of the songs.
Highlights include the beautiful ballad Liability, the Lourve, I could probably list every song on the album.
I think when it comes to her contemporaries, this album stands out. I think it's better than anything that was going on in female pop at the time. For me, its a 5/5, beating out the likes of 1989, which, while good, just doesn't have the same flow as this record. This album is also the peak of Jack Antonoff, before the diminishing returns we have seen in the last few years with a copy and paste approach.
The Louvin Brothers
1/5
I really really didn't enjoy this one. It's just not my thing, all the songs sound the same and I will never ever revisit it. I couldn't even give it a second listen
0/5
Norah Jones
3/5
Incredibly pleasant
If this album was any better, it wouldn't be as good, it's safe, it's calm, its peaceful, nice vibe, a little bland, but incredibly pleasant the whole way through. Probably not as good as the likes of Lisa Hannigan, but good none the less
It's probably a high 3
3/5
The Stranglers
4/5
Really good album, good flow. The famous songs obviously stand out, but there's great album tracks are great too.
Low 4/5
Bob Dylan
5/5
I think this is probably as good as Dylan gets. The other Dylan album that I got earlier (Highway 61), I was probably too generous with. This album is way way better, both in terms of the songs and also the production.
It was no surprise to see Phil Ramone was involved as he rarely disappoints. This was no different. I could list loads of songs, but they are all decent, although Tangled Up In Blue is one of my favourite Dylan song, and If You See Her Say Hello is utterly beautiful.
I'm gonna go 5/5
Hüsker Dü
3/5
Decent. Far too long, but decent.
Some bits reminded me of early REM, and oddly a bit of Bad Religion. But I don't think going for longer than an hour is necessary.
Low 3/5
Crowded House
3/5
Pleasant listen. Bit confused that it made the list as theres nothing about it that really stands out. The singles are good, the album tracks are good, but there's not really much to it.
Light 3/5
Erykah Badu
5/5
I don't know how to put into words how i feel about this album, other than.. I should listen to this album so much more than i do.
I heard this album for the first time in late 2019 and i knew within 2 songs that it was fantastic. The vibe of the album is incredible, at times its groovy, at times its lo-fi. The production is insanely good. Lyrically the album is superb, the melodies are fantastic. Its bold and brash and just insanely good
There are no lowlights, every tracks is good, the highlights could be any track on the album, but I'll shout out "...& On" and In Love With You
I was between a 4 and a 5, but i think with some of the albums I've given a 4 to, this one deserves more.
5/5
Jurassic 5
4/5
Great album. Really enjoyed this one. I had never really listened to j5 previously but I loved when they rotate the lead in the middle of a song. Each voice has its own personality that comes through on every verse.
I felt like the whole album was consistent throughout, I don't even think I could pick a track to single out because it all sounded good to me.
High 4/5 easy
Count Basie & His Orchestra
1/5
Probably the best something like this can be, but not my thing at all. Technically very good, very proficient, great production etc but with this style of music, if it doesn't have a crooner singing, it's just not my thing
Between a 1 and a 2
1/5
Joni Mitchell
4/5
Joni is great.
Due to the album not being on spotify I have found this one harder to grade. I have had to listen on youtube, with adverts galore, which doesn't help the flow of the album, but I won't hold that against Joni, I'll hold that against Rogan.
The album itself is great from what I can tell. She doesn't often miss. This album could be better than i think, but I think I'll fall in to the trap of giving it a 4/5, but it could grow on me, as i'd never heard this one before and her music has that way of getting under your skin
4/5
The Kinks
3/5
I like the kinks greatest hits and I LOVE the song Strangers. However, when I listened to this album back in 2019 I didn't like it at all.
Today though, I enjoyed it quite a bit. I think its a grower for sure. I don't love the opening track, I actually prefer the football chant of it to the original song.
Village Green is a highlight
It's either a 3 or a 4. It might be a high three for now, but certainly has the chance of becoming a 4
5/5
I love this album. This is one of my favourite albums on the list so far. I love the vocals, the backing vocals, the band, the sax etc.
The singles are clearly insanely good, Poison Arrow, Look of Love, Tears are Not Enough
But the album tracks are incredible too. The flow is great, the reprise of look of love, its all good. Perfect album
5/5
Shuggie Otis
3/5
The first track on this album is superb. I think the album starts quite well but then I lost a little of the momentum in the second half.
It's still very decent, but track one was my jam. I would say it could be a grower of an album for sure. Between a 3 and a 4. I would say a hiiigh 3/5
Metallica
3/5
Maybe i just wasnt in the mood for metallica today, but man, the snare sound, and the drum sound in general sounded so cheap and crappy when i listened this morning. Obviously I'm aware it's part of the gimmick of Lars, but the drums just sound way better on Master.
I think I much prefer the other metallica albums in the book, and this album does have One, which is clearly outstanding, but generally this album is overly long and the long periods of instrumentals without vocals just seemed a bit aimless today. I liked some of the quieter parts on the album that come up every so often, but generally i found listening to it underwhelming, which hasn't happened with any album I've been familiar with before taking on the list
I will give it a 3/5, but it could go either way depending on my mood
Björk
I just love it
5/5
Dizzee Rascal
3/5
I bought this album in like... 2008? and today was the first time I've ever listened to it. I remember it winning the Mercury Prize and it piqued my interest, but evidently, not enough to actually listen to the album
Today I thought, this album is pretty decent, i think the only negatives are that its probably at fault for a lot of the copy cat music that followed it, that aren't even close to the level of this album
it's good, everything is of a similar level
3/5
Waylon Jennings
2/5
Boring guff
Not my thing
We had it all is okay, opening track good. The rest of it means nothing to me.
Either 1 or 2 out of 5. Will never listen to this again.
Billy Joel
5/5
One of the best yet.
Incredible album. Every song feels like a song from a greatest hits, everyone song apart from the last 2 are on greatest hits.
Moving Out is an incredibly outstanding opening track. The Stranger is superb, Vienna is musically and lyrical amazing. Scenes is one of the best songs in his catalogue.
The only negative is that this is the only Billy Joel album on this list, as Nylon Curtain and 52nd Street would be great additions.
Le Tigre
3/5
Good album. Starts great, short, fast, punchy etc
I'm gonna go with a high 3/5
The The
4/5
Okay so this album is great. It's really good. I think it could also grow on me even more over repeat listens.
The track 2, the most famous track, is amazing. The rest is great too
I'll go with a low 4, but time could prove it to be better
4/5
Frank Sinatra
2/5
I listened to this album a few months ago and i just wasn't feeling it. I gave it a go today again, but my mind was already made up. I think when i saw there was a Frank album on the list, i was hoping for a boombastic thrashing swing sound, but this was somber and didn't really do anything for me. I can completely understand that people really like it, i understand the style was a drastic change for him, i understand that there appears to be a more relatable aspect to it, but even with all this, it just didnt interest me in the slightest
I am between a 1 and a 2, but i think a 1 would probably be slightly too harsh, as his voice is velvet, so i will give it the 2. Again, it\s probably good, probably a grower, but it does nothing for me
2/5
Turbonegro
3/5
So, not really my thing, but.. quite enjoyable. I can't say I'll revisit the album ever again, but I enjoyed it.
I'll go with a very low 3/5
Burning Spear
3/5
Really decent reggae album. Great voice, great music
Gonna go for a 3/5
Led Zeppelin
3/5
Led Zeppelin III/V
I'm hoping for something different from the other two Zeppelin albums on the list. I was quite let down by the album, surprised by the amount of acoustic guitar towards the end of the album, which I maybe preferred. Tangerine was the highlight, really good song
A disappointing mid 3 out of 5
Songhoy Blues
4/5
Great album.
Really enjoyed this one.
Modern rock with a African influence. Really interesting listen. Track 2 Irganda is one of the highlights, but the album is really consistent.
4/5
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Great album.
Ahead of its time
Will revisit
I think it will grow on me
Going with a 4/5
The Pretty Things
3/5
Enjoyed this one
I think it is a grower
It could be something I come back to
I will give it a 3/5 but with time it could sit higher.
First track is good. I did lose slight interest in the album as it went on, but that's more of a reflection of me than the album
High 3/5
Nirvana
3/5
This albums is pretty decent
I probably don't like it as much as I should do. The highlights are All Apologies, Pennyroyal Tea, Heart-shaped Box.
The louder moments on the album aren't as enjoyable
I'm between a 3 and a 4, I will decide in the morning
Machito
1/5
This album is a big slice of 'not for me'.
Technically proficient
Probably insanely inspirational for musicians at the time, but it's just not a style that interests me at all. i had no desire to give it a second listen, but for the sake of the project I have put it on again, but can't see it growing on me
seems harsh to give something like this a 1 because there is nothing wrong with it, but i'd rather not listen to it
1/5
Pet Shop Boys
4/5
Enjoyable
Not as good as the other Pet Shop Boys album on the list, but it's still great.
Low 4/5
Eminem
1/5
No interest
Not interested at all
Listened to this in 2019, thought it sucked then, nothing has changed
Positives
Stan, The Way I am\
Negatives
His voice is unbelievably grating, i think the whole thing sucks\
1/5
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
This was great
When I first saw this was the album, I wasn't in the mood but within 2 mins I was won over by how good it was
I'm gonna go with a 4, but this seems like one that keeps getting better
4/5
Beatles
5/5
Fantastic
Abbey Road has always been my #1 and the spot for the second best beatles album has always been between pepper/white/rubber/revolver.
After this listen, I might lean towards rubber soul now. Outstanding, a great balance between the pop and what was to come
In My Life, perhaps one of the best beatles song, and certainly one of the best john has written
5/5
Travis
4/5
Easy album to listen to
Pretty decent
Between a high 3 and scratching a 4
Funkadelic
5/5
First 2 tracks are superb
The rest is great too.
Between a high 4 and a 5
Duran Duran
5/5
Great album
Singles are fantastic, album tracks are great too
Album closer is great.
Going to go 5 again
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Loved this one
Before listening I was familiar with Buggin' from the Austin Powers soundtrack but didn't know any of the other songs
Two mins in I knew I was going to love this. I love the use of the orchestra, the production, so good
I'm between a 4 and a 5, we will see
The Byrds
2/5
One listen was enough
Album did zero for me
Bit of a disappointment
2/5
The Stooges
2/5
I do not like the stooges anywhere near as much as I thought I was going to
Search and Destroy is a banger
The rest left no impression
2
Elvis Costello
4/5
Great album
Not as good as My Aim Is True
This is Hell, All The Rage etc all good
Going to go for a four, but I reckon i will revisit in future as it was really decent and likely a grower
4/5
Randy Newman
3/5
Don't really understand how this is on a list like this. Its not bad at all, but it's not anything you couldn't hear anywhere.
I will give it 3/5
Justice
3/5
Decent
Was thinking 4 on first listen but the more I listened it became a 3. Good but just good
The Cardigans
4/5
Great album
Really good. Love the vibe, love the poppy nature, love the production, love the instrumentation. Very very high 4, was thinking of a 5, I'm sure it will grow, but for now it's
4/5
Marilyn Manson
1/5
You couldn't pay me to listen to this
0/5
50 Cent
2/5
Much better than I thought it would be
2/5
Janelle Monáe
4/5
Brash, bold, beautiful
Love this one. Great vibe from start to finish. Finding this kind of thing is what this project is about for me.
I could go 5 but it's borderline so I will say a very very high 4/5
Cornershop
2/5
Kind of enjoyable, interesting enough to start with
Prefer the Norman Cook version of Brimful
Lost interest with the cover songs at the end which took the album from a 3 to a
2/5
The Youngbloods
3/5
Good album
There are probably a bit too many long periods without vocals.
Good though
Low 3/5
The Zombies
4/5
I actually really like this one
great vibe, consistent, short, powerful, just a really really easy listen
I think 4/5 is a fair score, i think it could possibly grow on me more, i would definitely revisit it at some point, good stuff all round
The Mamas & The Papas
3/5
Very high 3
Enjoyable, easy listen, filled with a lot of classics
Bonnie Raitt
3/5
This is so close to being something i really really like, but instead it's just something i think is good.
The first track is fantastic, and all the songs on the album that are in a similar vain are great.
The issue is the songs that are the 12 bar blues. I dont think they fit in with the rest of the songs, and if you have to pick a portion not working, its the bluesy songs.
i would have been a high four, but its an average 3/5
Tina Turner
3/5
This is a 3 star that should be a 5.
Positives: didn't realise how good What's Love Got To Do With It is. Its way more subtle that I remember. Private dancer is good etx
The big issue for me is the amount of covers. The cover of Let's Stay Together was a big disappointment, unnecessary solos in it and Help!
If the album was by Prince, Peter Gabriel or Madonna it would get higher marks. I don't think I like Tina's voice as much
High 3/5
Creedence Clearwater Revival
3/5
High 3
Credence do alot of things I don't like others doing but I let CCR away with because they entertain me
3/5
Peter Frampton
4/5
The only reason this doesn't get a 5 is because it's a live album and I didn't get in the game for live albums
Everything on this album slaps, but the last track is one of the best things I've ever heard
4/5
The Incredible String Band
1/5
There is zero chance I ever listen to this again.
Every song lasts 45 mins and feels like it lasts 50.
Getting through one listen would be a point of pride
The Police
4/5
Good album with room to grow
Gonna say just on the cusp of a 4.
Peter Gabriel
5/5
Outstanding album. Biko is a big highlight and awesome closer. On par with So, but incredibly different
5
Hugh Masekela
2/5

So close to a 5
Gets better with every listen
I will revisit this one from time to time. I love the vibe, it feels like they would add a different instrument or backing vocal at any point to make any song better, it felt risky and rewarding.
I'll go 4/5 for now, but this one will likely grow on me

Great
Not as good as station to station but very good. Time is the highlight
Snoop Dogg
3/5
There's a 5 star album hiding in amongst all this
However, the skits drag this album down so much, its quite annoying, i think some of the tracks, vocals etc on this album are outstanding. But, any time you let your guard down, you get bored by one of these unfunny skits, no punchlines, just boring garbage. It's a real shame
Ain't No Fun, Gin n' Juice, Who Am I, all top songs, 5 star songs. It's a real shame
from a 5, to a very high 3. Shame
Orbital

Second Echo album, with the last one being less than a week ago
Much prefer this to Ocean Rain (which I liked)
This one packs ways more a of a punch. Fast, jangly guitar, great production, great flow the entire record, comes in at 44 mins as well, which is great.
Ripeness is a great song, The Cutter is great, Gods Will be Gods, i could list every song on the album, I like it alot
mid 4!
Radiohead

Massive Attack
3/5
Positives:
I absolutely love this genre. I think it's such an easy listen, its never too in your face, it works as a great background groove. Unfinished Sympathy is incredible, Safe from Harm is a great opener, Good closer too. Album is a good length, and flows really well
Negatives:
Some of it sounds quite dated, in particular some of the rapping. It happens too often and takes the album down a few points
In the end it goes from a 4 to a really high 3, but it could be a grower as it does have so many positives
Merle Haggard
2/5
Didn't like this. Country music I'd nit for Me
Low 2
Roni Size
1/5
I think this album is clearly really important in the history of 90s British music. But its just not for me. I didn't really enjoy it, i wouldn't ever listen to it again and was just waiting for it to end
it wasn't actively bad, it was okay, just not my thing, and far far far far far far far too long. Sometimes with albums like this, or the Goldie album on the list, i think why the need to make the songs last 9 mins, when there arent massive changes in the songs throughout. Just seems like hearing the same thing over and over and over and over. tidy it up, 5 mins a song and bingo bango, we are in for something great
instead it just keeps going and going
high 1 for this
Sister Sledge
4/5
This is good
Great vibes throughout
very funky
Great Guitar work from Nile Rodgers, great vocals, fantastic production. All around good album
Between a very high 3 and a 4
Pearl Jam
3/5
This album is really good
But not my thing at all
I have had a copy of it for 15 years and I'm not sure I listened to it until today
I think its good but led to alot of bad music that it inspired
Very high three
Arctic Monkeys
3/5
So hard to separate this album from the feeling I had towards it at the time. They were the cover of every magazine before they had even released a song.
I think the actual content is decent enough, mardy bum and sun goes down are both great, but id be hard pushed to give it more than a high 3
Kanye West
4/5
Art before artist in this case but I can rationalise it by saying, at this point he wasn't as insane as he currently is
This is his last great album, probably his last good album
The only reason it doesn't get a five is it feels like it outstays it's welcome after runaway (maybe one of my top five kanye songs). The bit with Chris rock is boring and pointless.
Feels like it was a time when he was a far more giving artist than he currently is, he wanted to bring people up, now he seems selfish jealous and petty.
The highest of 4s
Thin Lizzy
2/5
Looks this is fine
But its a live album and it's long
It's enjoyable enough but most live albums have a cap at 3.
I'll go high 2 on this
Deep Purple
1/5
sometimes you do stuff that you wont like in the name of discovery, or science, or to see if you can be convinced your initial feelings were wrong.
PLEASE NO MORE
Digital Underground
3/5
This is a wild one.
I love a lot about it.
The beats are great, the flows flow.
some of the songs are incredible, some are funny
Some of the issues, (i feel like a broken record with this but)... i felt like the album was ending at track 9, and it just kept on going. It has no right to last this long. Some of the lyrics have aged poorly, some are just going over the same subjects over and over. I get that the album is about sex, but it goes in to incredible detail about how much its about sex, with blow by blow directions and instructions to the point i'm wondering... surely this should just be a conversation for the people involved, i shouldn't know this much about you. But the stuff about having the big nose in HumptyDumpty was great.
not as many skits as usual in these early 90s albums, but still too much of that kind of stuff. get it down to 41 mins and we can all have a good time
a 3!
Bruce Springsteen
3/5
I love Bruce, one of my favourite artists. So far Darkness On The Edge of Town has come up, which I have given a 5. Although I love Bruce, Nebraska wouldn't be one of my favourites
Obviously it's his first album without the E Street band, and I kind of put Ghost of Tom Joad & Devils and Dust in the same category, and to be honest, controversial or not, I'd probably put this 3rd on that list as i prefer the other two.
I still like this album, i like a lot of the songs, Atlantic City would be one of the top Springsteen songs, and i can't really explain why i dont LOVE this album. When trying to weigh up my favourite Springsteen albums i have this as low as 16th, which is probably harsh, and i do think as time goes on i will like it more and more, it sounds better today than it did when i listened to it a month ago
Cream
2/5
Thought it was okay at the time
But
Listening to it twice this morning and it left zero impression on me
Would maybe revisit but not really fussed either way
Okay, high 2
The Afghan Whigs
4/5
I didn't get to give this album as much focus as I would have liked, but I really enjoyed it when I was listening.
I love the style of the guitar. I love the vocals, the messiness of it all
I think this could be something that grows on me
Elis Regina
2/5
Last few tunes were funky and enjoyable.
High 2 but could grow
Iron Maiden
3/5
This was a bit of a surprise in terms of how it sounded. I think I've listened to one Iron Maiden album in my life and it was definitely one of their later albums. In my mind there was the lazy 'this is all heavy', but to me it wasn't super heavy at all.
There were parts that were heavy, but there was a lot more melodic parts of songs that i anticipated there would be. And i quite enjoyed all that sort of thing.
Now am i going to stick it on after the three listens I've given it today? probably not, but i wouldn't actively hate it. Its decent, enjoyable, probably a 3/5
Tom Waits
1/5
I still vividly remember my first listen of this album in 2019, cold wintery day walking to work and thinking, is this a parody? If it is a parody... What exactly is it a parody of? Is the singing a parody of some style i am unfamiliar with?
If not, why is this on so many lists of 'the greatest album', is there something I am missing? Is everyone on planet earth just loving this, and i'm sitting there thinking, is this even music?
On this revisit, I can't say my views have changed too much. Unless something really strange happens in the future, I can't imagine ever listening to this album after today.
I kind of think, this is actively bad. Especially the first song. I kind of think, people are pretending this is good. It's not even that long at 52 mins, but it feels way way longer than 52 mins, it feels like it just keeps going on and on and on and on. NINETEEN songs! 19!!! if i get through a second listen today i would be surprised. Theres more to life than this album, and I have to believe people are pretending to like this, because if they actually like it... what am i missing?
Downtown Train sounded like, i might like this if it was by someone else. But its by this clown. Clown music for clowns.
Tom Waits for no man, I guess i am no man, because i really really don't like this album at all. I hate it, I hate the idea of it, i hate thinking about it, any second listening to it, could be time spent listening to a better album, a better song or even just a better silence. make it stop, stop pretending its good, its bad, its actively bad, and pretending to like something that sounds like this, doesn't make you cool, it just makes you someone who lies about the music you listen to, and if that makes you happy, then good for you. If i listen to this again, something has gone wrong somewhere, something has happened to me and i am not safe, i am in danger.
Wild Beasts
3/5
Never heard of this band before today.
So far, I really like what I hear on this record. Sometimes with indie artists you get stuff thats different for the sake of being different or just crap contrived crap, this is neither.
I like this album a lot. I feels like an album that, although accessible, would get better the more time you sit with it and dive into it.
at just over 43 minutes, it's a breeze to get through. I really like this type of guitar work, when the guitar isn't front and centre, but it's doing a lot of heavy lifting in the background.
Interesting bits of rhythm at different points, interesting vocals
I think I'm between a very high 3 and a low 4, I will probably lean towards 3 for now.
Everything But The Girl
3/5
This is a group I've always meant to get round to doing some sort of deep dive into. I really rate the genre and the vibe of the sound of this kind of record.
The lead singers voice is so soothing, such a great vibe, I really enjoy stuff from this time period and this genre.
Interesting to have remixes as the last two tracks, usually i dont rate that kind of behaviour, but it didnt bother me at all on this record, maybe the remixes were different enough than the album versions, maybe they were far enough away on the album, maybe i liked them and wanted to hear them again
Single is a highlight, Mirrorball has a great chilled out vibe.
for a rating, between a 3 and a 4
a 3.9 type
Sex Pistols
4/5
Iconic. One of the greats.
One of those ones you just have to put the art before the artist.
Opening track Is probably the best song on the album. All the singles are top.
One of those artists that was only ever meant to have one album, all the magic is contained to one set of songs.
I have had this album since I was a young pup, but I don't crack it open that often, not sure why, maybe because I think rotten is a tool and the person he's shown himself to be puts me off it.
I think I would go 4.8 on this. Not quite the 5, which is harsh as I gave Duck Music a 4 trying to be cool.
Brian Wilson
5/5
Sometimes an album is waiting for you and you aren't ready for it.
I feel like SMiLE has been waiting for me for 20 years and I've never been ready for it. My guitar teacher told me about it when I was 15. I think I've given it a few goes in the time since.
Today is the closest I've been to being ready for it. When I put it on this morning, it sounded better than it ever had, any hangups I felt before seemed to have disappeared.
I'd always preferred this version of Good Vibrations, the version on this record is probably one of my favourite songs of all time.
But everything on this record hits. Its all of a similar standard. The ideas and musicianship are incredible. It feels like a wonderful childlike dream. I wish I had got deep into it when I was first told about it.
I have such a soft spot for the Beach Boys album Holland and Pet Soinds is Pet Sounds. This album goes right up there today.
I think its a 5, and if it isn't a 5, it's a future 5 because its fantastic
Van Morrison
2/5
Because the artist is such a prick, I was concerned this album was going to be amazing, partly because I know it was such a big influence on stuff I love, like bruce.
However I was relieved to find it quite average. Its good, but I was expecting it to be incredible. Instead it's fine, nothing stood out, nothing made me wanna come back to it at any point in the future.
It is what it is, and what it is, is okay. 2.9?
Nine Inch Nails
4/5
this is an experience
It's a good experience
It you want something that takes big swings, this does it in abundance.
It's really easy to see how people become obsessed with the band and trent.
I'm not gonna be different or impressive with this opinion, but the stand out tracks are Closer and Hurt. They make a really good spine, and the rest is dotted around the outside, becoming a full picture.
I think I will revisit this album I'm the future
I get it and I like it
4
Super Furry Animals
3/5
This album is decent, honestly i was probably expecting a little more from it, know the song Something For the Weekend, but it was a little inconsistent the whole way through, both in sound and quality, although nothing on the album is bad, there just arent enough highs.
Opener is okay. Up tempo, toe tapper.
Track 2 Fuzzy Birds feels a little like a Bowie pastiche from the late 70s. Enjoyable enough
Something 4 the Weekend is great, sounds like a hit, probably the pick of songs on the album
For Now and Ever is a great closer. really enjoyed it I really enjoyed how it built the whole way through the end, just repeating the song title over and over, but building with different instruments and vocals the whole way through until its like a crescendo, a wall of sound, very good
I think somewhere around the middle the album loses a bit of focus and then the run in at the end is pretty good. Mario Man has a nice little chorus with the 'DuDu's.
There is probably a decent shout that the album is a grower too, maybe repeat listens would curve off a few of the edges that i don't like as much, but i do like it and as i said, there is nothing bad on the album. One of the songs sounds like Weezer a little, not saying that in a positive or negative way, it just does.
Fela Kuti
2/5
This is good in terms of musicianship, groove, quite funky, enjoyable to a certain extent. Some of the sax and trumpet stuff is great, understated funky guitar etc.
I don't like Live albums being on the list. And the songs are VERY long. The shortest is 7 minutes and 45 seconds. Which is fine, but at the same time, it does feel some go on for the sake of going on. If i was there live, i'd probably be loving it, which adds to the disconnect of it being a live album and on a list like this. I am not sure that after today I would ever listen to the album again, not to say that i didn't enjoy it, but there are so many albums on the list I'd love to revisit, I'm not sure this one makes that list.
The Sugarcubes
4/5
Life's Too Good and so is this album
It's such a nice listen.
I first listening to this album 2 years ago, and i enjoyed it, but never really went back and listened to it again, I'm not sure why. Since then I heard Vespertine for the first time, and it blew my socks off completely and became my 'go-to' recommendation.
Bjork is incredible. Her melodic ideas she incorporates in songs just seems to be in a different dimension that a lot of singers. Her voice is an instrument. Its so good to hear her on an album like this, doing completely different things to what she does on Vespertine.
The album itself is just over 33 mins, its short and punchy, at no point does it every over stay its welcome, only one song is longer than 4 minutes. I really like the sound of the guitars on the record. Really really like the production of the songs.
Traitor is a great opener, a really good statement song to start the record off, great riff, fantastic vocals, and a nice spoken word bit. Echos of really early 80s alternative music.
Birthday an obvious stand out, great song
Delicious Demon is a great little pop rock song.
There's almost a Smiths-esque rhythm to Motorcrash, as well as some great brass.
5/5
What an album.
Probably one of the top 5 albums on this list so far. Because I'm so famous with it, it's hard to put it into words, but if you were going to rate each song individually and divide it, this would probably be the highest so far.
The first half of the album is massive tune after massive tune. The second half is some of the best album tracks.
What an opener. Where The Streets Have No Name, classic. Epic. Wonderful guitar sound. Fantastic lyrics, atmospheric. Amazing
I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For is maybe my favourite track on the album. Love that riff, love the soaring vocal.
With or Without You is such a beautiful soaring ballad. Its so restraint when it could be bombastic, which works better. The build is so beautiful and the ooooh oooohs are wonderful
Bullet the Blue Sky has a wonderful groove. The bridge at the end is a but cringy, but the song still slaps.
Then we get into the really beautiful album tracks. The 1,2 punch of Running to Standstill & Red Hill Minning Town. Two of my favourite u2 songs. Beautiful. The chorus of Red Hill is so good, epic. The end of the song is incredible "let's go down on Red hill" refrain. So good
In God's Country and Trip Through Your Wires. Another great couplet.
One Tree Hill to me, is the u2 sound. Epic, lovely build, wonderful delayed guitar, building to a passionate chorus towards the end. Amazing little fake out ending. One of my early favourite songs of theirs. It's aged wonderfully.
If the last two songs where on any other album I would probably wax lyrical about them, because individually they are actually very good and sound very different to one another, but because of the level of the rest of the songs they get a little forgotten. I think both are actually great, but the run at the start of the album is so good that they seem a little lesser instead. But today they sound great.
One of the easiest 5s I've ever given. I can't even imagine how it would feel hearing this album for the first time, hearing all these extremely famous songs back to back and then hearing that run at the end of the album. It's not really a surprise how massive they were at this time. I've already rated War 5 and I know there are 2 more to come after this
Brilliant. Amazing. Incredible
Sam Cooke
3/5
There is a ratings cap on live albums (unless there are really exceptional circumstances). I just don't think there should be as many live albums on this last as there are.
That said, the content here is pretty good. All the songs are very good
I like how short it is, I like all the songs, the performance is quite good
I'll go maybe 2.9/3
Madonna
4/5
So far I've heard her debut album, which I absolutely love and Ray Of Light which I also really liked. Weirdly now she has a high bar despite me not having huge interest outside of these two albums and the song Love Profusion
The title track is absolutely outstanding. It's her biggest song fir a reason. Epic.
Express Yourself is a great 80s pop song
Love Song features and is written by my main man Prince is great.
Til Death Do Us Part is a fantastic pop song. Great low key chorus, fun guitar solo,.Great tempo
Promise to Try is the first ballad , a nice little palate cleanser before we go back to Cherish, another nice little pop ditty. Cherish has a great little chorus and a great little bridge where everything goes apart from the vocals and then it builds back up to another chorus with some great little vocal ad-libs
Keep it together - great little funky riff at the start, and then a nice little vocal refrain comes in. Really like the Groove of this song. Love the vocals on this one. This is one of my favourites
Pray for Spanish Eyes - Spanish guitar with a slow 80s beat. Chorus is okay. Song is fine but probably the weakest song on the album.
Act of Contrition - nice little closer using the backing vocals from Like a Prayer with Madonna talking over the top. Not one of the best songs but it isn't meant to be.
All in all this album is great. Really great. I prefer it to Ray Of Light and neck and neck with her debut album. Til Death Do Us Part is probably the highlight
Meat Loaf
3/5
This is a weird one. There are a lot of positives, but at the same time, I'm like... this is Meatloaf, and I don't particularly want to like meatloaf.
Here is the thing, a lot of the stuff i like on this album, sounds like Born to Run, but not as good as Born to Run. So like a worse Born to Run, but its a 5 star album so being similar to that is good.
The songs are long, but i don't find that to be a negative at all. There's only 7 songs, but i feel like they've been worked on so long and so hard that they are improved to an extent that they can't be made any better.
I think in terms of best song, You Took The Words Right Out of My Mouth is the highlight and Paradise By The Dashboard Light is probably the worst song, still decent but just a bit kind of a mash up of loads of different stuff that doesn't really go together, sounds a little like Rocky Horror Show.
I think it's probably a mid 3, I dont know that I'd ever listen to it again, but it is good. I wouldn't turn it off if it came on. There have been a lot of albums that have been a lot worse. But after it's third listen today, we'll leave it there
Judas Priest
1/5
It's not that its not my thing, I just don't like it.
Mostly I don't like the structure of the songs, the production, the drumming. First album with dave Holland on drums, should have gave it a go without him
The iron maiden album I listened to last week was so much better than this. Its so short and overstays it's welcome. After Two listens today, I can guarantee I will never listen to this again
United is the highlight, finally a song with a bit of melody, I'd add this to a playlist and forget the rest. There is also a song a little later with a reggae beat that is fine, but overall, i just didn't like it at all. Maybe a 1 would be too harsh, but that was my thought when it started, when it ended and during. Towards the end of the second listen i was really not enjoying it
Minutemen
4/5
43 songs. forty three songs. 81 minutes.
Kind of insane really.
I do like a lot of what I'm hearing, but I'm not sure this genre lends itself to having an 81 minute album, infact the albums that i like in this style are usually around 35 mins, which is perfect in terms of length. Part of the player is, it's very hard to differentiate between the songs. I'm constantly hearing all these bits i like, but then i look at the tracklist and i have zero idea what i heard 5 minutes ago, because they could be 4/5 songs ago.
Musically i like a lot of the rhythms and grooves on the record. A lot of different tempo changes across the songs. Some great understated basslines.
With regards to a rating, I really feel like any rating I give is unfair, realistically with the things i like on the record it should be scoring higher, and i don't feel comfortable giving this kind of music a low rating, but it's just too much. I honestly think there is a super interesting 35 min record here, even a good 50 min record, but when you are going to 80 mins plus, with songs that are so short, nothing can have an impact because you are going on to the next thing straight away and nothing can have weight.
Rod Stewart
2/5
Rod is odd. Since the 90s, I feel like he became really uncool. But then you hear things like The Faces and you think, he's not bad. This is my first time hearing this record.
So the first track, lets just say, the lyrics have not aged well in the slightest to put it kindly. The actual song was decent, but it was super hard to look past.
This album is way less of my thing than i thought it was gonna be. Some of the longer songs have weird bits that don't fit with the vibe. Going in to Amazing Grace on That's All Right is a choice. Not a particularly great choice in my opinion.
(Find a) Reason to Believe was probably my favourite song on my first listen. But i thought i would find a lot more hidden gems than i did
After 3 listens I can't say i'd ever listen to the album again. Either a very high 2 or a low 3. on the fence, disappointing
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Really great one this. Not as good as My Aim Is True but has alot of the aspects I liked about it. That keyboard sound is so good and so recognizable.
The 3/4 singles (depending on whether radio radio counts) are great. The album tracks are great. The Beat was a real standout.
Paul McCartney and Wings
5/5
I absolutely adore this album I would give it a 6 if I could. Controversial maybe, but for me, the album is on par with my favourite beatles albums. I just love it so much. The singles are incredible and the album tracks are superb. I love the cover.
The only song I'm not as big on is Picassos Last Words, which has actually grown on me, just really odd reprises. I still like it, just don't think it's as good as the stuff before
The lesser famous songs like No Words, are superb. And then you add BOTR, Let me Roll it, jet, bluebird. So so good.
Easy 5, should be a 6
Tears For Fears
5/5
Banger
This album contains perhaps the greatest song of all time Everybody Wants to Rule the World, truly outstanding amazing song. Then you add two more 5* singles in Shout & Head Over Heels. The best set of singles on an album so far, maybe even ever.
Kicks off with Shout, amazing song. Anthemic chorus, amazing funky break down, awesome simple solo. Love the lyrics a lot. Love the chorus towards the end with the little ad lib vocals into that simple solo. What an absolute banger.
Fan favourite The Working Hour next. I've always found this one a little more difficult to get into personally, but its clearly great, I wonder if its just the intro, because when it goes into the full band, I love that guitar riff and then we are straight info typical tears for fears style. Great vocals.
Everybody Wants to Rule the World - don't know what else I can say about this song. Incredible. The greatest. Incredible lyrics, awesome, so good. Great solo, great riff, great intro, great verse, great chorus, great post chorus, great bridge. Honestly I just love this song. Probably one of the songs I've listened to most in my life and I've never ever got sick of it. Banger. Last chorus is so good. Outro is brilliant
Mothers Talk another great 80s song. Great synth bass riff. Great chorus. This album slaps. Love the production on this song, great riff in the middle of the song. "We can, we can work it out" is a great little vocal riff.
I Believe is the song most reminiscent of their first album (one of my favourite albums). It's a slow piano ballad with a great vocal. Sad, crushing, a real sense of loss that is all over that first record.
Broken - instrumental for the first half - back to thumping 80s intro, riff, tempo back up. Great overlapping riffs across the instruments. Great foreshadowing of the next song. A great vocal comes in after half way. Then back to foreshadowing then....
That familiar piano riff to another absolute classic in Head Over Heels. The way the piano and guitar compliment each other is perfect, lovely light build. Amazing verse. Incredible chorus. The whole vocal is incredible but that second verse is insane
Then we close the album with Listen. Back to first album vibes. Lovely musical melodies. I could see a really awesome hip hop sample of the repeated piano riff. Slow build, this song could be on Vespertine or Gabriel III. Unique and beautiful
All in all, this album is a bit of a masterpiece. Which I know is a big big statement. I do slightly, ever so slightly prefer the first album, but I would put the first album in my top ten of all time. But overall I just love this album. When I think about it, I think yeah it's good, bit when it's on, its incredible
5
Electric Light Orchestra
4/5
Despite not knowing alot of the songs, this feels like I am listening to a greatest hits, in the best way possible. Its a double album so I won't go through the songs one by one, but good vibes all round. One of the biggest positives about the album is that Mr Blue Sky is probably one of the least interesting songs on the album, not in a bad way, but just that there is a lot on here that shines a bit more.
The early stand out is the single Sweet Talkin' Woman, which is a great little disco number. Jungle is another highlight, great backing vocals, maybe even deserves a slightly longer run time, interesting song, nice groove.
Summer and Lightning is another standout, really really good chorus, great second verse, great backing vocals and harmonies, very beach boys, great musical interlude
Throughout the album there are little bit musically, that sound inventive and break up songs perfectly. The vocals are great, the backing vocals are great, the production is great. All the things you'd expect from Jeff Lynne
I often complain about lengths of albums, but it's usually due to dumb skits, or people not having enough material, but with this album by the sounds of Latitude 88 North, they had more than enough material for this record. The quality of the songs is so high that i don't have any issue with the length at all.
Sonic Youth
3/5
I'm not sure this one is hitting for me today.
It's good and all, but after two listens, I don't really remember anything from it, and on the second listen nothing was familiar from the first listen at all, it could have been 15 completely different songs and i wouldn't have noticed.
Sometimes something should be your thing and it isn't, sometimes something is completely out of the blue and becomes your thing, its okay, it doesn't mean the music is bad. Maybe if i sat down and listened to this every day i would LOVE it, but as is, its okay, decent, just isnt grabbing me. a 3 is a fair rating, but may listen a third time and see if anything sticks
Robert Wyatt
3/5
The first track is so good, a nice chilled out groove. Really enjoyable. I'm not sure anything else on the album is at the same level, but the album is still enjoyable. I'm between a high 3 and a 4, i think i will go 3, but with thinking that it could eventually be a 4, seems like it would grow on a person, but the process doesn't lend itself to that very well
love the cover, love the title, good vibes
Neil Young
4/5
It's Neil Young, so it's obviously at least a 4.
Old Man is clearly an incredible Song. Great lyrics, great chorus, just an amazing song. But the song that blew me away was Alabama. At first the chorus knocked my socks off but the whole thing is incredible
Eminem
1/5
Shite 0/5
Siouxsie And The Banshees
3/5
Fine.
Not grabbing me as much as I thought it would and the Helter Skelter cover sucks
Mj Cole
2/5
Far too long.
You can't be having remixes of the same songs on the same album
Miles Davis
2/5
IF it's possible to think something is great, yet not like it, that's this album for me. I appreciate how good it is, but i don't enjoy it. I think, for me, and the music taste i have, whether people deem it good or bad, this just isn't my cup of tea, i don't like it.
Aimee Mann
4/5
Great record that I'd never heard before. Everything is consistent. The highlight would be Stupid Thing, which was immediately so catchy I could sing along by the end. Really enjoyed it. Just about a 4
Method Man
3/5
Not bad
No skits so that's a big positive
decent length
easy listen
very in the pocket, very decent
Easy 3
Nick Drake
3/5
Decent, if not slightly bland.
Nice voice, good songs but not something to write home about. May revisit at some point
Stevie Wonder
5/5
Loves in Need of Today - lovely song, great little chorus, around the 4 min mark, the vocals are incredible . Very long, but earns every second of it. The last chorus lasts longer than some songs
Have a Talk With God - funky, much shorter, great production and instrumentation. Good
Village Ghetto Land - violins. Feels like a song that had drums guitar piano etc but has been stripped down to just strings. Good
Contusion - panicked funk intro. Sounds like something from final fantasy. Instrumental. Okay
Sir Duke - classic, one of the best bass solos ever
I Wish - wild wild west. Awesome
Knocks me off my Feet - back to a ballad. Okay
Pastime Paradise - classic
Summer Soft - typical SW song. Some nice stuff. He has this knack of throwing different keys in the same chorus. It's so him. Great piano solo
Ordinary Pain - crazy change up when the female vocals come in 3 mins in. Those last 4 mins are incredible
Isn't She Lovely - maybe the worst song. I guess thats a compliment. Album version is worse than the single version.
Joy Inside My Heart - ballad. Decent. Good production, maybe a touch too long.
Black Man - funky departure from ballads. Good
I Am Singing - Spanish. Okay
If Its Magic - slow, harp, okay
As - best song on the album
Another star - Good upbeat tempo. Great song
Saturn - good
Ebony Eyes - very elton, very good
All Day Sucker - funky, second best song on the record
What can I say? It's brilliant
Air
2/5
Not bad.
Chilled out vibes
On the verge of a gear it never really gets into
The Allman Brothers Band
1/5
Please stop it with live albums.
12 bar blues.. eugh
10 seconds in and it's already got two big no nos
I didn't like this. I didn't enjoy any of it and was waiting for it to end. If I was familiar with the band and the songs maybe I would have enjoyed it slightly more, but I'm not so it's just a bit pointless to me
Joy Division
4/5
Great album
Two criticisms
Bass plays alot of out of tune notes that don't sound good
You need to be in the right mood for it
Amy Winehouse
3/5
this is so much better than Back To Black. This makes me want to re-rate Back to Black at a much lower score. I would give this album a 3, and B2B as a 2. It feels way less produced, and way more on point. Better flow, music better suited to the host. Just better in every manner, even if B2B has Tears Dry, which is a much better 'single' that anything on this record.
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Look, I like Elvis Costello, so this will get a good review
It's good
The more i listen the more Green Shirt stands out
Olivers Army is a cracker, Peace Love Understand is great.
Good vibes, good album, likely a grower
Tom Waits
2/5
I dont like Tom Waits at all. Not one bit.
I feels like it's supposed to be bad
This album is way better than rain dogs
OutKast
4/5
A lot of good stuff
Great songs
Great lyrics
Great vocals
Classic singles
Perhaps too long and has skits
Still is a 4. Yes lad
Public Enemy
4/5
A bit brilliant, a bit long.
I think there is a five star shorter version of this but you could cut it down to about 12 tracks.
By the time I got to Arizona is amazing
4
Steve Earle
2/5
Better than most country
But still country.
2
Michael Jackson
1/5
No thanks
5/5
An Absolute classic
I would argue this album has less fantastic songs thats other Beatles albums, but at the same time, it probably knits together better than most of their other records.
If I had to pick the best songs on the record I'd probably go for A Day in the Life (obviously) and Lovely Rita.
the sums of its parts come together ;), to make something incredible
I could argue, but its a 5 lads
The Flaming Lips
4/5
Opener is a banger. Yes it's a rip off of Cat Stevens, but it sounds great. If you want to write a good song, copy a great song.
Beatles
5/5
Complicated album to review, I'll start with the negatives, as there are far more positives.
Songs I don't like; Piggies, Bungalow, Bill Rocky Raccoon (although it okay), Wild Honey Pie, Revolution 9.
If Revolution 9 is some mad weird thing thats really influential, that's brilliant, but no thanks, i detest it, it's probably the worst song by an artist i really like
I think its fair to say, of all Beatles albums, this has the most songs that i don't like.
On the other side of the coin, of all the Beatles albums, this has the most songs on it that i like. If i was cutting the album, i wouldnt even remove the other songs i dont like, apart from Revolution 9, i would remove it in a heartbeat, and i will skip it on every re-listen today.
Now the praise; Glass Onion, Dear Prudence, While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Happiness, I'm So Tired, Blackbird, Helter, Sadie, Monkey, all some of my favourite Beatles Songs
Special shout out to Long, Long, Long, which is a low key favourite. underrated
Side two is better, but both have classics
Jefferson Airplane
3/5
Pretty good.
I liked most of it. Some good stuff
Good 3
Cypress Hill
3/5
No skits, easy to listen to. Everything is consistent. Easy 3
Stevie Wonder
4/5
No where near as good as songs in the key of life. At times it seems a bit over dramatic. It could do with a bit more of the funkier elements we would later see from stevie
Don't Worry About a Thing is a highlight. And Hes Misstra Know it All Is superb.
R.E.M.
5/5
The classics are classics for a reason.
Drive is such a good song. The moment that electric guitar hits with the riff, it changes the song and takes it to a new level. Maybe a strange decision to be a opener, but it works.
Try Not to Breathe is amazing. Some of the backing vocals are my favourite in their catalogue. Sidewinder is a great pop song, infectious, great sing a long song. Really enjoyable
Everybody Hurts is kind of hard to separate how much of a meme it's become, but it's brilliant. epic, great build, great outro.
Slight dip in the middle even though I like the songs but the run of man on the moon, nightswimming and find the river is insanely good
5
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
I hadn't listened to this album the whole way through in a while, but today it sounded so good, particularly compared to their last two albums since Frusciantes return. This album made those two albums sounds so much worse, in Cali you have a Frusciante who is close to the top of his game, whereas now, its just not the same.
The first side of this album is ridiculous in terms of bangers. Get on Top is the only song on the first side that isn't of the level, but its still good. The opener is incredible, Parallel Universe is a great song with a bass/lead combo that sounds so different that the rest of the album, Scar Tissue is a classic, Otherside is a classic, Californation (although not as good as the other singles) is great, Easily is probably the best non single track.
Then the second half is great, the songs aren't as famous, but there are still great songs on it. Velvet Glove is probably the highlight of the second half and Road Trippin is a beautiful ending.
I've soured on the band generally, and this album is probably their 3rd best after By the Way and Blood Sugar, but it's a classic. I am going to have to say 5.
Public Enemy
3/5
I think this is the third album from PE on the list so far, and I think I'd place this one 3rd. I think it's just too long, there's too much bits of like DJ interstitials that don't really add anything to the album, just increase the length.
Maybe I just wasnt in the mood for it, but when you think that it's close to being over, then you look and there is 9 songs left. I like a lot of what is on the record, but with an edit it could be much better, 45 mins would make this a great record.
The Boo Radleys
3/5
found this a bit of a struggle today. There are elements of it i like, but long and not as instant as other records i have reviewed from this era. its fine, its okay, but i needs more effort than i want to give it
The Band
4/5
Really really good
Would like to give it a few more listens
But I'll give it the benefit of the doubt with a 4
Anita Baker
4/5
I actually really like this.
Reminds me a little of Never Too Much by LVD in terms of production, the bass, the guitar, the keyboards, backing vocals.
Every song sounds like a single. It's short, the song are of a similar high quality.
Gary Numan
3/5
Not as amazing as is assumed it would be. Maybe needs more listens
Stan Getz
2/5
Fine
Not my thing
Will never listen again
Black Sabbath
3/5
Much much better than I thought it would be
AC/DC
2/5
I don't like this. I think it's bad. Not evil, but bad.
I think if you listened to two minutes of the whole thing you'd get the gist of it.
The highlight is You Shook Me All Night Long, which is an absolute banger. I don't like any of the rest of it. Boring, Dull, Dated, crap
But each to their own. low 2
Gang Starr
4/5
Really Good.
Actually one of the better hip hop albums on the list so far
Stevie Wonder
4/5
Hard one to evaluate.
I definitely would have it 3rd of the Stevie albums so far, it's still great, but i prefer the other two.
The most magical part of the album is the closer I Believe (When I Fall In Love It Will Be Forever), incredible song. I think it might be one of his best. Obviously Superstition is great and the rest of the songs are great, but this song is so damn good. I was maybe gonna go high three, but that song makes it a low 4 I think
Fats Domino
2/5
Yeah tiz fine
Won't revisit
High two
Richard Thompson
3/5
I like this
I think I will revisit this
I can hear something that would really influence someone like Frank Turner. Good. Standard 3
Frank Zappa
3/5
Before hearing this, if you had asked me what I thought Zappas music was like, there is no possible way I would have said this kind of thing, no chance I would have guessed this genre. I think I might have said complicated metal music, but this is not that.
And I like it
Ian Dury
3/5
I'm split on this.
It's both something i like, and something i dont really like.
I like a lot of the more funky stuff
The lyrics on Plaistow Patricia have not aged well at all.
At times the melodies are nice and interesting, at times it's a bit guff
Shall we all say high 2 and move on? high 2 or maybe a 3
John Lee Hooker
2/5
My dad used to play this in the car when i was younger all the time
I didnt remotely like it then, and i don't like it that much better than i did back the now. I always hear about people saying liking their dads music later in life, but usually its for bands like u2 or Yacht Rock, not this kind of thing
I will never listen to this again, i can guarantee.
low 2
The Icarus Line
3/5
Good
Noisy
Very good
Ella Fitzgerald
2/5
I will do my best to finish this, but Jesus christ 3 hours and 15 mins is insane
Update - been listening for ages, only on disc 2. How can you make 3 hours of this. Come on
Update 2 - past half way. They All Laughed was the stand out so far. No way do I finish this. I have a life to lead. Yesterday's album was 54 mins and I thought, that's pushing it a bit
Just found out this is a boxset and not an album. Take it off the list.
I'm giving up soon because some of these tracks and repeats and some are demos
What are we doing here.
Ghostface Killah
3/5
Skit skit skit
Shakey dog - great
Momma - good
Too many skits, too long, pretty good
3
The Temptations
3/5
Really great, really enjoyable
Will revisit
High 3/ low 4
Sigur Rós
5/5
Beautiful
This album is truly beautiful. I have the same feelings towards it as i did to Melody AM and Vespertine.
It's anthemic, makes you wanna run through a field with your arms up in the air, embracing life. its just absolutely beautiful
i think im going 5, i will come back to this record often, i hope
Astor Piazzolla
2/5
in terms of musicianship, in terms of technique, in terms of artistry and performance, this is incredible
in terms of the music i like, this isn't for me. It kind of sounds like Final Fantasy music, which is a compliment for sure, but at the same time, i am not sure that records like this are the reason i decided to take on this challenge. one and done lad
Frank Sinatra
1/5
This just isn't the frank sinatra I want. I want the bombastic, leg kicking frank. This is just dull.
Dexys Midnight Runners
4/5
Really enjoyed this. Better than people give it credit for
ZZ Top
3/5
I was expecting to despise this as much as I dislike ACDC, but its actually such a nice surprise. I quite like it. Don't get me wrong, we ain't going over a 3 here, but it's enjoyable. Legs is the highlight, decent
Grant Lee Buffalo
3/5
Not bad
Was good on gilmore girls
OutKast
4/5
Skits, far far too long
The first side is very decent but side two is great.
Pink & Blue is great.
I want to give 4 but the only issue is that any time I come back to it, I feel like I've never heard most of it
The Velvet Underground
3/5
I remember thinking this album was pretty good, but on todays first listen, i was so unbelievably annoyed by the closing track European Son. Thats not a song, its a bunch of people mashing their instruments until a song ends. Woeful song, tainted my opinion on everything that came before, not just on this album, but in life
Haircut 100
4/5
I'm sure if i went to look there would be loads of negative reviews of this album, a lot of 'why is this on this list?' but i know why its on the list, because its brilliant.
The singles are excellent, up there with some of the albums on this list in terms of best singles. Love Plus One is absolutely incredible, Fantastic Day is brilliant, and Favourite Shirts is great too.
The hidden banger is Calling Captain Autumn. Great closer.
The thing i love most about this album is the production, all the instrumental breakdowns, all the uses of the different instruments, really great work
I'm stuck between a 4 and 5. We'll see
Big Black
3/5
good. shame its not on spotify, but good
like the production, like the sound.
solid 3
The Strokes
3/5
It's good but not anywhere near as good as people say. It feels like it's always about to go into another gear but never quite does. High 3 seems fair?
The Verve
4/5
One if the greatest ways you could ever open an album. Great album. Really love the singles. Album tracks are great, especially One Day.
I think I could like it more as time goes on.
Very high 4
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Really good. Couldn't give it as much concentration as I'd like, but very good. It's a very high 3, but it could go 4 or even 5
Morrissey
3/5
Not as good as viva hate
Don't enjoy the lyrics at all
I enjoy it musically
Few good songs; Let Me Kiss You is one of the highlights.
High 3?
Beastie Boys
3/5
Far far far better than License to Ill
Still not amazing, it lasts too long, so you enjoy it for a bit, but it keeps going and going. It feels really uncool at times. They just arent my kind of group, the vocals can be cringey. The whole thing can be, but the first half is fairly decent.
Lets say low 3 and we can all move on
AC/DC
2/5
Not my thing, and i just dont like it, i never will.
I like in Highway to Hell, the little pauses in the chords on the guitar.
Hate the vocals so much.
I think its bad. 2/5
1/5
Too much crap country on this list.
Once I've listened to this once I will never listen again
Shite, short, but shite
The Beach Boys
5/5
That opening riff to Wouldn't it Be Nice, incredible
The album sounds way better through headphones because of all the harmonies
Its a classic, but I prefer Holland, Smile and the Dennis Wilson album, but still likely 5
Motörhead
1/5
Eugh another live album
The Cult
1/5
Initial thoughts would be...
Decent but very basic.
Don't really understand why this would make the list, as its not doing anything particularly interesting. Just very standard
Finding out about the cynicalness of changing styles to this generic rock sound from their gothic style makes me like this less.
Soulless
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
Easy 5
Usually on an album like this I would go through all the lesser known songs and say what i thought about them. Not for this, most of the album are big hits and great singles
The big hitters are big hitters for a reason. I wasn't always the biggest fan of Dancing in the Dark, but it's pretty damn good.
Glory days - amazing
My Hometown - REALLY great closer, great vibe, great times
Cover Me - Great, maybe my favourite, if not then its I'm on Fire
Bobbie Jean, No Surrender, I'm Goin' Down, so good
7 singles on an album is MADNESS, but it works lad.
5
Beck
4/5
This isn't getting any lower than a four
I loooooove the vibe, i looooove the groove of it all. So beautiful.
I wouldn't say that specific tracks stand out, because it all feels like one 52 minute piece of music.
I love the product, the instrumentation, how warm it sounds, haunting at times, just a really good solid album
I would say its a 4 because although its all one neat beautiful piece of music, i feel like its just missing two stand out tracks to take it to another level.
I would place it below E-pro and i have a very soft spot for HyperSpace, but i think its better than Colors, even if it doesnt have a stand out few singles.
Beautiful - High 4 baby
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
2/5
Fine
OK
Nothing to write home about
Liked that it was short
Ramones
3/5
53rd and 3rds backing vocals take this down a notch. So many classics but 4/5 stinkers. High 3
Solomon Burke
3/5
Not bad at all.
Lower 3
Sounds good. Missing a banger, but decent
Rahul Dev Burman
2/5
Not my thing
Won't listen again
Low 2
The Kinks
3/5
Okay. Thought it would be better. Seems like a left turn influenced by the beatles left turn but not as successful
Violent Femmes
2/5
Honestly, way less interesting than i thought it was going to be.
It's still good, just not close to a 5 or 4, okay, standard.
its cooky, but at times its cooky for the sake of being cooky.
dont know how often i'd come back to it after today. I think there are way more interesting albums from 83 than this
The Replacements
4/5
I like this
I like it a lot
Androgynous is such a good song, great song, fantastic . Unsatisfied is a standout. I like the whole thing. its a very very decent album
solid 4
Robbie Williams
3/5
Disappointing
Of all the RW albums I'm familiar with, this is the least weird one, it's plain and the album tracks just do nothing. The singles are fantastic so 3 is a fair grade but I was looking forward to hearing this once I saw it was on the list, but after hearing it, it's clear it was only on because its his debut, when any of the next 3 seem more important and the two after that are far more interesting in terms of sound
3
The Pogues
3/5
It's okay, I think i was maaaaybe expecting it to be a little better, but it's absolutely fine. I could do without hearing Fairytale of New York again, its fine, but overplayed to the absolute maximum.
Fiesta was very good, some of the other tunes were good, but overall just ok
low 3?
Michael Jackson
1/5
Nope
Mariah Carey
3/5
Not bad at all.
Its not 'better than I thought it would be', as she clearly has an incredible voice, and this period of time is great for female singers in RnB/pop. But it is a pleasant surprise
Production is outstanding. Songs are good
A decent 3
Muddy Waters
3/5
Better than every album of its kind. Still not my thing
3
Fleet Foxes
4/5
This album cannot be blamed for the horrendous albums that followed in its wake, I can't blame it for all the wishy washy crap that poorly imitated it and came out after.
I hadn't listened to it since the year it came out, maybe not even since the week it came out when i bought it. I remember liking it back then, and i like it now.
David Bowie
3/5
Interesting, odd, decent, definitely the worst Bowie album I've had so far, and probably the worst one I've heard, but I've mostly just heard the good ones.
Seems strange this would be his first album in 11 years and this was the result. There are interesting movements in the second half of the album, some nice chords in unexpected places.
I think it's good, but i dont think its great, maybe a high 3 on there. Better to come
Femi Kuti
3/5
Good, really good
Good groove. Enjoyable, too long but good.
Between a high 3 and 4
The Coral
2/5
a lot of these albums grow on you the more you listen
This one had the opposite effect. If i had listened once i would have said, fairly fine, unremarkable, but fine, 3
but by the third listen i just find it incredibly annoying. I don't like it, its not bad, just annoying. I think the known single is a song that i'd rather never ever hear again
Dull, insipid, boring, low 2
David Bowie
4/5
Great, really great
Side one is brilliant and side two is beautiful.
Second best bowie so far. Very very high 4 that will eventually be a 5
Kings of Leon
1/5
Making me listen to 2 kings of Leon albums seems like punishment but I'm not sure what I did wrong
PJ Harvey
3/5
Really good
Great sludgy guitar, sparse, grimey, good
High 3 but with a high ceiling
R.E.M.
4/5
Honestly, probably not in my top 3 REM albums, i've struggled a little with it at times, but it is pretty good.
lots of good, some okay, and a really weird sax solo in Fireplace. I know its from 1987, but that feels a bit 1982. sounds like a complete rip off of The Working Hour by Tears for Fears
Seems unthinkable to give this album a 3, so i'll lean more towards a low 4, a 'just about' type 4. I dont know if i like Lightin' Hopkins or think its woeful. I like the backing vocals and the guitar kinda so im gonna lean towards liking it
Primal Scream
3/5
Theres big positives on this one.
The weirder bits on the album are great. There are times when it fades back in to like brit pop stuff that doesn't match the vibe of the album, and it just feels more random than groundbreaking.
but then like Star is good.
Album is too long too. I think sometimes people think, if its weird it HAS to be long, but length itself doesnt make something strange, its all about the different parts coming together in a better way.
Still think its good, but just feels like its a bit all over the place. High 3?
The Libertines
4/5
Really liked this way more than I thought I would. Easy 4
Jeff Beck
2/5
Not particularly Interesting to me
Yes
4/5
Really good. Going 4 but If I get to spend time with it I think it will get better
Radiohead
5/5
Every song is exceptional. Not the coolest radiohead album to give 5 to, but I'm not the coolest person.
They went on to be something else, but they were exceptional at this
Bob Dylan
3/5
Not in the mood for this one today. The harmonica is going through me. Its good but not in my top 5 Dylan albums. Bit samey, bit out of time, bit boring, but good.
Don't think twice in excellent
Joan Armatrading
4/5
Love and Affection is a great song. First song that jumped out at me. Greg low backing vocals on the chorus, turns out it was Lester from The Wire, insane.
PJ Harvey
3/5
Don't think this one is good as Dry, but it's good seeing an artist like this have a critically acclaimed album 8 albums into their career
I do like it though. it sorta fades in and out, and when you are in its pretty good, and when you are out its fine too
The standout would be the Words that Maketh Murder. Fun bouncy song
Kelela
4/5
Great.
Really enjoyable. Great vocals, great production, great songs.
Low 4
Sonic Youth
3/5
Probably not a good sign I groaned when I saw this was the album
i dont particularly like it, but i get the artistic merit of it, i will just get it a 3, and hope thats the end of the sonic youth albums on the list
The Notorious B.I.G.
4/5
So so good.
Could do without the skits. Take them off, finish in 45 mins and we all go home happy
Public Enemy
3/5
Great but far far too long
40 mins would be the perfect length, but you are thinking we are closing in on the end and there's another 6 songs left
Steve Winwood
4/5
This is so good
It's not cool but its damn good
High 4. Not cool but brilliant title track is superb
Marvin Gaye
5/5
Easy 5. Absolutely classic
perfect length, perfect vocals, perfect production, perfect vibe
The way some of the songs slide in to each other are outstanding, and the flow of the album is so good because of this.
one of those ones thats so hard to talk about because its just brilliant. opener and closer are so so good. LOVE IT
5
Prince
5/5
Absolutely incredible
Perfect
5
Pink Floyd
5/5
Definitely the first time I've had three back to back to back 5 star albums.
What can you say about these albums? brilliant, fantastic, amazing.
All of the above. Great stuff. LOVE the guitar work on Time, all the actual song songs are brilliant and the inbetween is inventive and interesting.
The female vocals in The Great Gig in the Sky are epic, great stuff
I refer to album length ALOT, but this is the third stone cold classic album in 3 days, and they have all been less that 45 mins. incredible. Longer songs but less songs makes an album more focused, and this is laser focused.
Miles Davis
3/5
Not for me at all
But clearly pretty good
Funkadelic
3/5
The spotify version is 3 songs long, two of which are the same song. Awesome song but the same. Don't know how to rate it but I reckon the real thing is great. I'll go 3, but its an unreliable review, probably should be higher
Fairport Convention
2/5
I dont like it at all. Didn't like the other one by them. Not my thing, boring, shite, just not for me
UB40
2/5
Unfocused, far far too long. Samey, same tempo, same chords, same production, a bit boring for a style of music that can be great
A weak first effort, but probably important
Radiohead
5/5
One of the best
As a Radiohead album, this one is pretty perfect. Good vibe, great flow, great energy, great tunes, great production. It's just absolutely great.
Like everything on it, it's their best album by a mile and to no ones surprise (no Surprises) im giving it a big old 5
Love it, love everything about it. Yes lad/
Fugazi
4/5
Great.
Not as good as 13 songs, but great
Low 4?
THIS IS A TOUGH ONE.
Thinking about this album while not listening to it, there is no way its a 5, but then when you stick it on... i dunno... seems pretty 5 to me. I think i have to break it down in my mind first.
Beautiful Day is majestic, outstanding, wonderful, its over played, but c'mon its amazing.
Stuck in a Moment is my favourite u2 song and one of my favourite songs of all time. Love it, love the choir, LOVE the bridge at the end, i love it, just absolutely adore it/
Elevation is funny, i don't know if it's great or bad, but its fun, funny, a good laugh, tomb raider, Ericsson t10
Walk On is one of my favourite u2 songs, i love it, the outro is one of my favourite things in music history, i adore it
Kite is ok, its fine, not one of my favourites, decent chorus, good
In A Little While - LOVE this one, incredible. wonderful, beautiful
Wild Honey - Decent
Peace on Earth - like this one, bit cringy but good
When I Look at The World - Decent enough
New York - decent
Grace - Fine
The Ground Beneath Her Feet - amazing, incredible, this one really snuck up on me, and the one I have listened to most today. I dont particularly remember it before today another than the funny keyboard, but its amazing LOVE IT
so if an album has 12 songs and 6 are incredible, and rest are ranging somewhere around good, i'd say its a success, and for me the songs i like, i LOOOOVE, then it has to go 5, i will say, the second half isn't as good, its a little like Californacation in that way
Eagles
5/5
I feel like i've been on a great streak.
This album is absolutely outstanding.
You have the certified bangers that are singles; hotel california, New kid in Town, Life in the Fast Lane.
But the key is 3 outstanding album tracks,
Wasted Time - one of my favourite Eagles tracks
Try & Love Again - amazing
The Last Resort - incredible
the other two album tracks are great too.
Jethro Tull
4/5
Great. Brilliant. Really liked it.
4 star baby
Prince
5/5
Pretty great, ain't it?
It's better than I think it is, and I think its great
Starfish and Coffee is a top 5 prince track. It's Gonna Be a Beautiful Night is a banger. The singles are all great.
Stevie Wonder
3/5
Wasn't feeling it at first, but the longer it goes on, the more it hits it out of the park
The ballads stop it being special
Guns N' Roses
2/5
i dont like this at all
look, i dont like them anyway, but meh.
some of the singles are good, obviously Sweet child is good, but overplayed to the absolute max. Paradise City is good too. Not big on Welcome to the Jungle, its a bit crap.
But the album tracks stink. Think About You was a real moment when i was like... do i listen to the rest of this or just leave it. No Me gusto
Giant Sand
2/5
Fine
Quite dull
Doesn't deserve a place in this list
The Good, The Bad & The Queen
3/5
Liked it, thought it sounded a lot better first and second listen but eventually lost me a bit
High 3?
Basement Jaxx
2/5
Do some of these songs sound like they were made on Music 2000? Yes.
I'm pretty sure i wrote Same Old Show on my ps1.
Mtv music generator... two!
It's fine, not my thing.
Sade
4/5
That voice
That production
Those backing vocals
That sax
4
The Specials
4/5
You're wondering now
What to do
When I rate this album 4
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
Nearly wanted to take a mark off for the bear boxing, which is so cringy and dated and more than anything, just sounds bad.
But the rest of it is great. Very high 3 to 4. Will decide later
Sarah Vaughan
1/5
Eugh a live album
Clearly good to an extent. I didn't like it
Laibach
1/5
Bit of fun, no quality, don't want to be too harsh but life is life
Beck
4/5
This one is great.
Really really great.
I want to go 5, but its probably a very very high 4. I love E Pro, great opener, great riff, love it
All the singles are fantastic. I LOVE Go It Alone. Great album
Let's say 4. happy enough
George Jones
2/5
Boring country crap
DJ Shadow
3/5
It lasts over an hour
Good tho.
Bit long but enjoyable. High 3 baby
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Pretty good
I'm not sure if it's as good as the other one I rated a 4, but it might be
Venom
1/5
Once I finish this I will never ever listen to this again. It's crap. Why is the production so so bad?
The Stone Roses
3/5
Pretty damn good. But lost it's way a bit in the middle and finished strong
I think I need a bit more time with it but it's a high 3 at the minute lad
Pixies
5/5
What a pleasure.
Love this album
5 star
FKA twigs
5/5
This is a way easier listen than it has any right to be. It's really good. It's got a really good vibe and flow. I'd never heard anything by this artist before, so it was all new to me.
Lights On was the first track that stuck out to me. Really good. It's the same standard the entire way through. But more than anything, it's a really really easy listen
Iron Maiden
3/5
Gooooood
ABBA
4/5
Very good. Very interesting pop album. The songs are played so much, it's easy to realise how often they make unexpected choices.
A few album tracks that are duds, particularly the closer, but it's a 4 and more baby
The Beach Boys
4/5
Lyrics superb. A grower. Really good.
I would still place it behind pet sounds and Holland, but that's not a bad place to be
The Dandy Warhols
3/5
90% of this is four chordy, the exact same tempo, wishy washy, interchangeable. Whipping tree is the first time the tempo changes, but then it's that tempo for the next song
A Tribe Called Quest
4/5
Really good
A strong 4
Lauryn Hill
5/5
one of the easiest 5s you'll come across
everyone knows its good, but then you get to that guitar solo in Ex-Factor, those beautiful vocals. Incredible.
It earns it's length and its just increase, what an unbelievable talent
Fleetwood Mac
5/5
Another easy 5 star.
Classic album, classic for a reason, everything is great, first 4 songs in a row is such a high level of constant greatness. Break the Chain is a classic
album is classic
Aerosmith
3/5
Better than toys in the attic, but just not that good. Their album tracks are always meh, apart from the closer ballad.
Very low 3
Screaming Trees
3/5
Fairly decent, if not super interesting. Not sure there is a chance I'll listen to it again.
Low 3
No idea why something like this makes a list like this
Unremarkable
Everything But The Girl
3/5
Starts with a beautiful cover. My main criticism would be, I feel like they do slightly more alive numbers, and this has too many ballads, everything on it is good. Probably not as good as the other album of theirs on the list. But a solid 3
Steely Dan
4/5
First half is a 3
Second half is a 5.
I like the first side, but the second half is so good, the singles, the vibes, so good.
I'm not sure it's as good as the first album, but it's close
Thundercat
4/5
Yeah clearly pretty great. Michael McDonald was a great surprised.
Enjoyable, great cameos, great vibe, great
bit long
low 4? i think so
B.B. King
2/5
Honestly fine, but not my thing at all. I dont like this kind of music, and i dont like live albums
but its short, and everyone is playing their instruments well.
high 2 or so?
Manic Street Preachers
4/5
Really great album.
Full of classics
High 4 lad
Jane Weaver
4/5
Great.
Bleak in all the right ways
Low 4 baby
Doves
3/5
Closing track is excellent. Uses similar chords to the first song which gives it a nice symmetry.
I'm not sure this album is a must hear before you die, at times its quite plain, but it's never bad
Pounding sounds like a song Coldplay would go on to rip off a thousand times
Khaled
2/5
This is 💩. It's dull and super long
The first 4 songs almost ruin it as a listening experience, but after that it gets upbeat and comes to life. I almost wonder what the potential would be if you took away the first 20 mins. But they are there and they absolutely suck
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
One of the best albums of all time
One of the best openers and best closers in Thunder Road and Jungleland. Everything in between is superb too
Kate Bush
5/5
This is pretty great. I think that not only is it brilliant, but it will likely get better the more time spent with it. its weird, its atmospheric, its different, its just really really good.
i think it's a 5, i think it might be better collectively than Hounds of Love but doesn't have those big hits that Hounds has.
I think 5
Elastica
2/5
this is only on this list because of the Trigger Happy theme, otherwise its pretty unremarkable. I've never heard anyway mention this band, i've never heard any of the other songs. It is quite dull and i wont listen to it after today.
Its a low to mid 2
Ali Farka Touré
3/5
OK. Decent low 3
Simon & Garfunkel
3/5
It's okay. Good even, I think I enjoyed the other album more and as always I prefer solo paul simon
America is an amazing tune
It's somewhere in the 3 range
Sabu
1/5
I will never ever think about this record again, and if you ask me if I'd listened to it before, I'd have to double check if I had. Fairly shite
Orange Juice
4/5
This is so close to be a 5. I listened to it constantly today. Rip it Up is brilliant. So many good tunes
I'll go very high 4
The Everly Brothers
2/5
Serviceable if not unremarkable. Not bad, just nothing special
High 2
Paul Weller
4/5
Great album. Listened to it all day.
The Weaver is the highlight . All the singles are great. Album tracks good
Solid 4
Living Colour
3/5
Couple of tunes missing, but overall fairly decent. Few good tunes, easy listen.
3?
Oasis
3/5
I definitely maybe listened to this a good bit in the past, which makes it more confusing to me that half the songs don't sound familiar. There is a crazy amount of filler on this for something seen as one of the best albums ever.
Slide away and live forever are the standouts. The rest of the singles are good, but man, that filler is what is sticking with me right now.
I was gonna say easy 4, but I've enjoyed some 3s more
Quite enjoyable
Very decent standard.
Doesn't quite get to a 4
But good
Sleater-Kinney
3/5
So tempted to go with a 4 on this. It's great, and ends with a cracker, either high 3 or 4 but it needs me giving it more attention in future
The Who
4/5
Pretty brilliant
Their best album
Gonna go 5
Singles are great
Opener Is an all timer
Two closers are classics
Everything in between is great.
The White Stripes
3/5
I think this is better than the other white stripes album on the list, perhaps not as good as the jack white solo album, but that does feel like too many jack white albums on a list like this
Doorbell and the closer are the top picks
High 3 baby
Underworld
2/5
Too long
Ok
Suede
4/5
Bit long, but a big great.
At the same time, would you want to cut anything from this album?
There are a couple of songs that are over 5 mins, but they are probably two of the best songs on the album
The singles are great.
The use of the orchestra towards the end of the album is superb. Probably, if i'm honest, the strongest album i have reviewed from the brit pop era.
I gave there other album a 4, and i enjoyed it, but at this point, I don't really remember that album at this point.
This is close to a 5, but might be a 4.99999999(recurring)
Mudhoney
3/5
Quite good
I think there's a shorter version that's a 5, but this is a 3.9 i think
Good stuff
Traffic
4/5
great album, good listen
better than john barlycorn
im saying it squeaks a 4
Thanks
Leonard Cohen
4/5
Beautiful
Haunting
Funny at times
Outstanding
Says everything he needed to say and then passed, wonderful
5
Grizzly Bear
4/5
Very good
Very consistent
Ride
3/5
Fine
Doves
3/5
Going but not as good or interesting as their other album on the list
3
New York Dolls
3/5
Very goof
High 3
Nick Drake
3/5
Really good
Better than his other on the list
High 3 slash 4
Fiona Apple
4/5
It's a really good album
I prefer it to her other album on the list
You could release this today and it wouldn't sound dated. There is no way I'd guess 96 for this album.
It's a 4 baby
Small Faces
1/5
The nuts and bolts are good
All the talking stuff is so bad, unforgivably horrendously bad. Annoying, cringey, waste of time
At times it sounds like B Sides from Fagans gang in oliver twist.
Turning things up and down and panning instruments alone doesn't make something experimental.
I think the biggest factor in the rating will be.. when it finished, the idea of playing it again turned my stomach slightly
Its a 2 or a 1
T. Rex
4/5
Great
Really great.
The way the guitar solo comes in on Ballrooms of Mars, so good.
Consistent. I assume they have an album even better than this based on some of their other singles. I'm happy with a mid range 4
Brian Eno
3/5
I like this, I like the production
The only issue is that it feels like 2 different albums that don't go together.
Good but not perfect
fIREHOSE
4/5
Time with you - grrrrrreat song
Good album. Really enjoyable, bounces from one thing to another in a really great way.
Safe 4
Neil Young & Crazy Horse
4/5
Pretty standard neil. Very good
Pocahontas, hey hey my my
All good
Standard 4
Hawkwind
1/5
Some of the music was good
But overall I absolutely hated this. It is genuinely one of the worst listening experiences on this list so far and I have reviewed nearly 500 albums.
1/5 doesn't do justice to how unejoyable this was. Utter pish
Bebel Gilberto
3/5
Relaxing, chilled out. Decent
3
The Dictators
2/5
Less interesting than it should be
Less layers than it should have
Ok
Brian Eno
3/5
This album is quite interesting but I'm not sure it's suited to listen to for a day and move on to the next one.
It's experimental, incredibly well produced and contains some great moments
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Tooooooooooo long
Galapogos is great
The slower more melodic stuff is the best stuff but it's good, great even
Go for a FOUR
Country Joe & The Fish
3/5
Good
Not great.
Low 3
Leonard Cohen
4/5
When 'First We Take Manhattan' started, I had to double check to see if I picked the right album. I did pick the right album, and as an opener that song is outstanding. Brilliant stuff
Not as good as his last ever album but pretty darn entertaining
4
Drive-By Truckers
2/5
I appreciate what it's doing. But it's very long and the music isn't super interesting. There's moments I like, some I didn't.
A Desmond
Cowboy Junkies
3/5
It's no Joni, but it's decent. I like it. It's not groundbreaking, but weirdly sounds ahead of it's time.
Still would have it in the 3 range, but it's nice
Adele
3/5
He Won't Go is the best song on the record. Ill Be Waiting is another standout. The album tracks are generally more interesting than the big singles.
Big issue is that it's not that interesting. Ryan Tedder songs sound like Ryan Tedder songs. The happier sounding songs are better than the low energy big vocals slow songs.
All these album lists keep trying to convince me this is one of those great albums, but it's okay.
The Black Crowes
1/5
Incredibly generic
Seeing Things is good.
Thick N Thin sucks so much. That sound is everything I dont like about this genre. Woefully bad
Hard to Handle is a pale imitation of the original
Even the good parts are quite cringey
It's actually worse second time around
Bobby Womack
4/5
I would listen to this for pleasure
The whole thing is great, but Secrets is a level above. Absolute banger
Really good. If You Think You're Lonely Now is so good too
Good 4
Beck
4/5
Really great, experimental, a bit weird, quite good.
Not as good as the 2 other beck albums I've had so far. Starts really strong, maybe loses it's way a little, but still good
Scratches a 4
Alice Cooper
2/5
More interesting than it has any right to be.
Oddly the title track is the least interesting track on it.
Like a rock musical at points
That said. It's passable but I doubt I'd ever listen again
TWO
Slipknot
1/5
Is it shite? Absolutely, but we need to use more nuisance.
This album is about 6 years after they were relevant. The inclusion of this is puzzling considering some of the albums missing .
Just bad really
The Birthday Party
1/5
Imagine listening to this utter shite for pleasure
At least nick cave came out of it a pretty good artist.
In tune isn't a requirement, in time is. Woeful
Anthrax
3/5
Pretty decent. It's not that it's not my thing, but for this kinda thing it needs to be outstanding for me to love it, but I like it.
It is probably a 3
Goldfrapp
4/5
This is stunningly beautiful. I had an idea of what it was going to sound like and it ticks all those boxes and provides more. Fantastic
I'm between a 4 and a 5. I just really like it but realise it isn't the coolest album by the band or one that represents the band. But it's just a pleasant listen, a real pleasure for a Saturday night
Foo Fighters
2/5
If rock music was a roasted pig, the foo fighters would be a thinly sliced ham from a packet.
It's so vanilla, its so bland. It needs salt, it needs flavour, it needs something
Jean-Michel Jarre
3/5
Easy listen
Nice
Pleasant
Great background
Low 3
Syd Barrett
1/5
Some of this is interesting. Some of its quite bad. If Its You sucks a lot. Waste of time
Its one of those things that is hard to listen to, because it's bad, but clearly Barrett is not right.
Common
4/5
So so easy to listen to. Such an easy listen.
All the kanye on it reminds me of when he was actually a good musician.
Commons voice is so chilled out, the album is fairly chilled out
Great grooves, great production, perfect length, NO SKITS.
Sonic Youth
3/5
I feel like this is a band I should love. I don't know why they haven't clicked with me.
Its fine. It's better than their other albums on the list. But 4 albums from this band is overkill. 2 would be overkill. 1 is kinda overkill.
Tom Waits
2/5
For the love of everything in this world, please stop trying to make me listen to Tom Waits
This sounds like the soundtrack to a really boring musical
Taylor Swift
3/5
The music is quite good
The lyrics are mostly bad. Just so cringy, and I know her fans like these kinda cringy lyrics and references, but they ruin good melodies on nearly every song.
The Disposable Heroes Of Hiphoprisy
3/5
Lyrically it's outstanding
Musically decent
Touch too long
High 3 low 4
The Teardrop Explodes
4/5
Really really good
The closing track is the highlight 'When I Dream'. The rest is great but that song just is on another level
Wasn't expecting to love it but I do
Fooooooour
The KLF
2/5
Not on Spotify but checked it out on YouTube while working
It's decent
High 2
Dagmar Krause
1/5
Utter pish
The Divine Comedy
4/5
Very good
The singles are great and the songs that are album tracks sound like a great musical.
Closer is great but the highlights are Something for the Weekend and Songs of Love.
4ish baby
Lightning Bolt
1/5
Both noise and rock. Does what it says on the tin, however I am not buying that tin as I didn't enjoy it
It's clearly good, but it's so unaccessible, so unfriendly and uncatchy
John Lennon
5/5
Really really good.
Jealous Guy, How, How Do You Sleep, Gimmie Some Truth, all absolute classics.
Even Crippled inside, which I am not a huge fan of, when it's in the context of the album, it sounds good.
Really good
The Go-Go's
3/5
The funboythree version of Our Lips are Sealed is so much better than the one on this album, not even close
Liked it more on first listen. Second it got less interesting.
3
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
An easy listen but not something that's going to stick with me. Good length, sounds good. Enjoyable but nothing crazy.
Plain old Jane but in a good way
3so
The Jesus And Mary Chain
2/5
I found this to be nearly good, which made it worse to me. It's fine, probably even good, but I found it pretty irritating, especially when it just seemed like it was noisy
The Cure
4/5
Really really good
Not my favourite 3 cure albums but gloomy depressing and beautiful
Fouuuur
CHIC
4/5
Really great.
Such an easy listen.
As disco goes, best album on this list so far.
An easy 4
Butthole Surfers
2/5
This is one of those ones I was looking forward to and it ended up being a big disappointment.
I was enjoying it til about half way through and when it ended, the idea of listening to it again made me immediately made me feel uneasy. It's possible that it's because the last track is a steaming pile of shite.
Hole
4/5
Way cleaner and better produced by their other album on the list.
Very swift and to the point. Very focused. At times it's catchy but still has a swag and attitude
Bee Gees
4/5
Great record.
The opener How Can You Mend a Brokenheart is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Second track Israel is probably the worst track on the album, followed by Greatest Man, which is okay.
Next song is where the record picks up, Just the Way, which sounds like a john lennon beatles song from 67.
The other highlights include Don't Wanna live inside Myself, Trafalgar, lion in Winter and the fantastic closer Walking Back To Waterloo, which I think is one of their best songs
I find it hard picking a rating for this when we are rating out of 5. I'm not sure it's a 5 star but four doesn't seem enough as it's better than the majority of 4s. I also think the BeeGees deserve to have a 5 on the list, but the two choices are slightly left field. I prefer Main Course and feel like the late 70s albums are much more important
The Charlatans
3/5
As britpop goes its pretty good. Got somewhat less interesting the more I listened but definitely good, and while I can't see me ever sticking it on myself, I don't think I'd turn it off if someone else put it on
Tortoise
4/5
As a fan of Post Rock, this just sounds so good.
The whole thing sounds beautiful, but it almost sounds a lot more grown up that postrock of the late 00s. There is great use of different sounds, different tempos and the production sounds so good.
Although the album never really goes all out or heavy, at times you can feel this underplayed feeling of aggression, but its controlled and just bubbles under.
This is a 4 to me, I could see it growing from there, i like it, and i could imagine listening to it for fun. A really good album, moody in all the right ways
The Bees
4/5
Really great
Loved hearing loads of different influences showing in a different genre
The ska influence is great
The long instrumental sections are very good
High 4
Janet Jackson
4/5
I am not a fan or Janet Jackson, or at least I wasn't.
This album really really surprised me. I had this idea it was going to be something from around 97, and i assumed it would be full of ballads, but it was actually mostly pop, funky pop, really bouncy and interesting.
The production is great, the songs are very very well written, with catchy singalong bits, and more than anything, it's so instant.
If i was to compare it to the Mariah album that i heard a few months ago, i think this is a much better, much more cohesive, more catchy, more songs. This album feels like everything in a single, with a few things in between that stitch it all together.
Youssou N'Dour
3/5
Decent. Short and sweet
Spacemen 3
2/5
This shouldn't be on this list. We are talking about 1001 albums to hear before you die, not.. 1001 albums to put on in the background and forget about.
It's fine
Nas
5/5
One of the best albums on the list
One of the best albums ever
The best hip hop album ever
Paul Simon
3/5
This is pretty great but it should not be on this list. The other paul simon albums definitely deserve their place, but this was slightly unsuccessful, doesn't have any big singles on it, it's not an important cultural touchstone. Just a pretty decent listen.
Think too Much is brilliant
The Doors
3/5
I really tried with this one. It's okay. Wish I liked the doors more than I do
Randy Newman
2/5
Appreciate what hes doing and trying. None of the songs stood out. Won't listen again. Its not bad, just nothing is as good as I Love LA
The Rolling Stones
3/5
Its okay. There are times it gets interesting for a period, then goes back to 12 bar blues
Under My Thumb, while lyrically terrible, is musically interesting. The album is better in the non guitar focused parts
Out of time is the best song
The Electric Prunes
2/5
Not bad, not amazing
Can't say it will stay with me but not unenjoyable
The Beau Brummels
3/5
Very decent
Not my thing but good
Air
5/5
Classic
Chilled out vibe
Amazing really.
It's so nice to listen to, I find myself making up little melodies over the top.
The whole thing is great
The Young Rascals
3/5
Great
Short and sweet
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
4/5
Really really good
Beautiful and moody.
First track is a classic
Last track is a miss but everything else is great
The Fall
3/5
Not a fan of this group at all. But I've tried.
Cover of Lost in Music? Strange
Liked how different it was from their other albums on the list. Bit happy Mondays towards the end
Ok
Slayer
3/5
Does what it says on the tin
Short sweet
Dinosaur Jr.
3/5
Okay
Just like heaven isn't as good as the OG
Madonna
4/5
I Deserve It is the exact style of the latter half of Madonnas career that I really like.
I think the William Orbit time in her career is the most interesting time for her. It's a production style that works so well.
Really good. Prefer it to Ray Of Light
4
Sufjan Stevens
4/5
Far too long, but man it's good
Jacksonville is a big stand out
Big, bombastic, moving, uplifting.
Very good
4
Holger Czukay
2/5
Interesting at first but got a bit irritating the more I listened to it and the thought of hearing it a third time didn't appeal at all.
Okay but a bit shit 2
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Joni is great
This one is decent, maybe not to the standard of the others I've heard from her, but its good. Bit different, very jazzy at times, great production, enjoyable
High 3
Cyndi Lauper
4/5
Really fun
Really great
She bop?
She bop
Easy 4
Manu Chao
3/5
Manu chou
Clandestino
Probably settle between a high 3 and a 4. Bongo Bong -> Je ne t'aime pe, is an unbelievably good transition and such a great back to back set of songs
Cocteau Twins
5/5
First track is awesome
Oh this is good.
Fifty fifty clown is great. Chilled out.
I'll be honest, the
Vibe on this is so different than I was expecting. I was expecting more banshees, and this is more like 80s pop vibes (despite being from 1990).
The vocals are like an instrument. The layering of the vocals is outstanding.
It's beautiful. Not a bad song on the album
5 stars
Coldcut
2/5
Not on spot
Gave it a go on YT
Not interested lad x
Bad Brains
3/5
Perfectly fine
Probably won't remember I've listened to it in two days time, but it's good.
The Jesus And Mary Chain
3/5
First track is good with all the duh duh duhs
Album got better with every listen tbh. It was a lot more hopeful and happy that I thought it would be.
Started off scratching a 3 but definitely on the higher of the 3s for me now
The Temptations
3/5
Oddly this was slightly disappointing. I thought it was gonna be better because I do like the group but I guess it was...
Just my imagination...
Running away with me
Solid but not amazing. Grapevine cover was poor
Pink Floyd
5/5
It's obviously incredible
Its just such an obvious all timer
The musicianship is insane, the bass is incredible, the guitar is incredible
The Damned
3/5
Real good
Short, sweet and packs a punch
High 3
Shivkumar Sharma
2/5
Fine
A few nice moments
Fairly unmemorable
Fine
The Who
3/5
I Can See For Miles sticks out like a sore thumb. I wish the album sounded more like this, and less like the rest
I get what they are trying to do with this album, but for me, it's just not that interesting. Especially compared to something like Tommy
3
Incubus
3/5
Pardon Me & Drive are classics. The rest is decent
High 3
The White Stripes
3/5
A third white stripes album on this list just seems like overkill, especially with some of the stuff missing
Talking Heads
4/5
Really great
Prefer fear of music
Still really good
A classic really
Frank Ocean
5/5
Superb
Yes
3/5
I thought it would be a 4, but the more I listened the more 3 it became.
I like the weirdness of it all
Decent but not as good as the other Yes album
Solange
4/5
Solange - A Seat At The Table.
You couldn't have paid me to listen to this before this list. But it's honestly blown me away. It's incredible.
It might be controversial to say this, but this is so much better than anything I've heard from Beyonce.
Between a 4 and a 5.
Another post 2010 album that I avoided that I now really enjoy
Run-D.M.C.
3/5
Yeah it's good, obviously good
I probably don't like it as much as I thought and it's probably because of the last track.
The known songs are good, album tracks are good. It's good. But it's not AMAZING
Harry Nilsson
3/5
Opener superb.
First half good
Second half classics
Without You is a classic
Between a 3 and a 4
Fiona Apple
5/5
On first listen I thought, yeah not bad.
Second listen blew me away.
Musically and lyrically its superb.
Really like it
The Jam
5/5
Classic.
Love this album, I should listen to it more.
All Mod Cons is a great sharpe, short and sweet opener. Quick, in your face, top song
To Be Someone is a great song
The best is last. DOWN IN THE TUBESTATION AT MIDNIGHT OHHH OH OH OHHHH OH
TUNE great album, great song
Billy Bragg
3/5
Good, very good, but I think i prefer both artists separately.
It's a nice album, I could probably do with it being 40 mins, but it does what it does. Probably a grower
David Bowie
4/5
Brilliant.
Really really solid
Much better than his previous album.
Blackstar, more like 4 star
Nirvana
4/5
Overplayed for sure.
Sick of something in the way
In bloom is great
A 4
Kendrick Lamar
5/5
Brilliant
4/5
Really good. They seem to sound different constantly. Good album, good vibes
4
Portishead
4/5
Gloomy in all the right ways
Tori Amos
4/5
Really good
Really enjoyable
Fantastic voice
The Beta Band
4/5
Veeeeeeery enjoyable
Broke is the highlight
Really really liked it. Got better, solid
The 13th Floor Elevators
2/5
I tried. It didn't interest me
It's not bad, but it just didn't interest me
Les Rythmes Digitales
2/5
Whether this is good or not (it's ok?) It has no business being on this list
Take A Little Time is good. The album is better in the second half when it's less just the same phrase repeatedly said over a beat
Frankie Goes To Hollywood
4/5
Title track is a masterpiece
Singles are classics
Covers are weird sing choices and take it down a grade
But still brilliant
Marvin Gaye
3/5
We are all sensitive people
Nowhere near the levels of Whats Going On and doesn't have the funkyness of what came after. It's good, but not as good as I thought it was going to be
The Smiths
4/5
It might be just today, but this sounds better than The Queen is Dead today, and I know its not, but it sounds great.
Really like the pianos going wild at the end of Disco Dancer mixed with the jangly guitars
Red Snapper
2/5
Shouldn't be on this list. First half is okay, didn't enjoy the second half as much. One of the songs had really awful lyrics
I might give it a 2 because I think I want to. Sorry lad
Bruce Springsteen
5/5
I like so much about this album. Lyrically it's fantastic, I love a lot of the music, I love the production from BO'B.
The negative is, it's too long. I'd cut 20 mins, but at the same time, I would find it hard because I legitimately love so many of the songs.
You have the obvious; lonesome day, waiting on a sunny day, city of ruins, the rising. But then you have these underrated tracks like Into the Fire, You're missing, Nothing Man, Mary's Place, paradise.
I am so on the fence on pulling the trigger on a 5... we will see
King Crimson
2/5
In its interesting moments, this album is super interesting. I think there is so much baggyness with long extended bits at the ends of songs that ultimately lead to absolutely nothing. I don't mind stuff being experimental or jamming or making songs longer, but there has to be something going on, otherwise it's just quiet noise that means nothing. What makes it worse is that when there is something good going on, EVERYTHING is happening.
4/5
Her best work by far
Great listen
Easy 4 baby
The Yardbirds
1/5
Not for me lad, not one bit
I like rock music but if I had to show an example of what I didn't like, it would be this.
Sorry
Tracy Chapman
4/5
Really really good.
I could do without hearing fast car ever again, but the rest is really strong
Mountains o things- superb
Culture Club
3/5
Great, fun, interesting
Good pop songs. High 3 low 4
The Go-Betweens
3/5
It's fine and dandy
Was waiting for it to come and blow me away, but it never really hit the mark. Safe, too safe to get a higher grade
Scratches a 3 most likely
Leftfield
2/5
Fine
John Lennon
4/5
Mother - superb
I Found Out - great song, horrible drum beat on chorus
Working Class Hero - Great
Love - Beautiful song
God - maybe lennons best song
Great album. The only negatives are the slightly higher tempo songs. I don't think they work as well.
Django Django
4/5
This is interesting. I almost wish I hadn't got it on boxing day so I could sit with it a little longer.
Enjoyable
Ladysmith Black Mambazo
3/5
World music
Good
Interesting
3 or so
Def Leppard
2/5
Not my thing at all
Photograph is good
The whole thing is incredibly cheesy. Every single element of it. There are a few times when the chorus flips to major and everyone is singing and it's fun
A lot of it sounds like its either ripping something else off, or it's been ripped off
Fatboy Slim
3/5
The singles are very very good. At times it feels like the album tracks are just filler until we get to another single.
A lot of the album tracks are a bit bloated and you could probably cut a good 90 seconds out of all of them. Maybe at that time to Praise You and let it last an hour. Or cut the album down to 40 mins and keep all the good bits and we'd have a 5*.
The Mothers Of Invention
1/5
If you like this album, you are so cool and edgy!!
This is maybe the worst album I've come across in the year and a half I've been taking part in listening to these albums.
It's so bad and uninteresting. If it was experimental at the time, that's amazing for them, doesn't mean I should have to listen to this unadulterated rubbish
If I ever have to listen to this again, something bad has happened.
Awful
0/5
Grateful Dead
4/5
Very very pleasant.
I honestly had zero idea what the grateful dead sounded like, zero. This isn't exactly what I thought, but its definitely way better than I thought.
Very chilled out, nice voice, good playing. All good
Emmylou Harris
3/5
The best version of something I don't like
Although it's all covers? So what are we really doing here?
For No One is beautiful
Maybe a 3. Not important
Scissor Sisters
4/5
Laura is such a good pop song. That ending with the sax and the backing vocals is so good
Take Your Mama is great too.
Filthy Gorgeous sucks so much
Comfortably Numb isn't as good as the original, but its still good and I like what they did with it
Four of the singles are excellent, so it's up to the album tracks to hold up their end.
Tits on the Radio, despite the name, is a good tune with a decent chorus
Better luck next time - decent
It's a 4
Klaxons
3/5
Was leaning 4 but at couple of things went against it. Tracks that are big long periods of silence are a point taken away automatically.
Generally good
Dion
3/5
Great production
Decent listen
Can't complain
3 for the lads
The Waterboys
3/5
Definitely too long.
World Party and We Will Not Be Lovers are brilliant.
At times the waltzy stuff takes away the momentum. It's best when the songs have a bit more bite.
Brian Eno
3/5
Good
Fine
Nothing particularly notable but enjoyable
3so
Megadeth
3/5
Yeah fine
Can't see me listening again but it does the job
Like a 3
Coldplay
4/5
Coldplay - Parachutes
Kind of depressed me a little listening to this, and then seeing what the band would end up becoming. Although i like Viva La Vida, I think they look the wrong lessons from it and have spent the 15+ years since desperately chasing hits and success, when at their best, that early period is quite good.
Shiver is such a good song, from what I understand it's one of chris Martins least favourites. Someone should play him something he has written in the last ten years.
Overall parachutes is really really good. I'd go the high end of a 4 on it. But it's so depressing to look at what they've become.
Can
3/5
This is quite good
, but it does kinda just fade in to the background.
It's very very listenable
Definitely way ahead of its time. You could tell me this is from 2025 and I'd believe you. Doesn't sound even slightly dated. I can see why it's been inspirational for others
Crosby, Stills & Nash
3/5
Very decent
But probably not as good as any of the other albums by any of the ones involved in this one
Metallica
5/5
The best metallica album and I'm not sure it's close.
Sanitarium, Master, etc all great. Battery is probably the best metallica song.
Orion is great. Damage Inc good
Great album. I think its a 5
Nick Drake
2/5
Perfectly fine. Unremarkable. I'm sure all of the songs are lovely in isolation, but when it came to a second listen, I kinda thought, what will I gain from another listen? Still gave it another go, but 3 albums from this artist is overkill on a list like this
Sly & The Family Stone
4/5
Really great
Groovy
Funky
Sounds so good
Easy 4
Lupe Fiasco
3/5
Veeeeeeeery long.
Verg good, but over 70 mins for a debut album is a big ask
Always feels weird to listen to a song like outro, which is just someone naming people
Al Green
4/5
One banger away from being a 5 star.
The title track is one of the greatest songs of all time. Everything is good, some of it is great.
Really like it
4
Fela Kuti
3/5
Short
Sweet
Decent
3
Ryan Adams
1/5
This sounds like someone trying to br bob Dylan so much that at times I get a little second hand embarrassment while listening. 51 mins is an awful long time to listen to something that's so derivative. Doesn't help that he's a creep, but you try to look by that when I'm trying to evaluate an album. Cringey like the front cover. Try hard.
Kraftwerk
4/5
Yeah great like
Who am I question something as good as this
Its a high 4.
Dusty Springfield
3/5
Good songs
Good voice
Can't complain
Queen
3/5
Actually quite good
Got better with each listen. Sure it doesn't have the glamour of the latter half of the career, but its quite enjoyable
Between a high 3 and a 4?
Emerson, Lake & Palmer
3/5
Yeah pretty good
Last track is not my thing at all, which kinda leaves the album on a bit of a sour note.
First track is pretty good. 20 mins of chaos.
I think I've heard better from them, but its not bad
Serge Gainsbourg
1/5
The track that is just riffs with someone laughing over the top is annoying as fuck. Why on earth would you do that
The Beach Boys
4/5
Really good
But the last track of them talking in the studio ruins it a bit.
The rest of it is top class
Peter Gabriel
4/5
I definitely don't think this is near the levels of So or Melt. Both of those were so instant. This has a fairly poor middle. Start is great, comes back round at the end, but I didn't enjoy the middle, which is disappointing as the other two albums are two of my fav on the list
It's still really good. Particularly the first 3 songs and the closer.
Excuse me sounds like a bad Bugsy Malone song
Scott Walker
1/5
Shouldn't be on the list. I get it and he's charismatic, but a waste of a spot and a waste of time
Napalm Death
2/5
I get it, it's fine, but the idea of hearing it again doesn't fill me with joy
Eels
4/5
This album sounds sooooo 90s. In a good way
Really good, consistent, good length. Good
4
Neneh Cherry
3/5
Good album
Not out of this world, but certainly good
3
Stephen Stills
3/5
Very good but veeeeeery long
Stephen Still is quite good at this
Good album, i enjoyed it. Big 3
Teenage Fanclub
4/5
That riff on the closing tune is magic. It sounds like 87ish Cure
Opener is a corker
Guiding star, another good one
A delightful listen. This album should be on rotation
Don McLean
3/5
Title track is one of the greatest songs of all time
The album is better when it's faster. I think the ballads make it lose momentum
Everybody Loves Me Baby is fun
Supergrass
3/5
First track is so good. Such a good kick off. First 5 songs very strong, then it completely loses its way. Second half is dull
Boards of Canada
3/5
Good
Bit long
Does the job
Chilled
Grateful Dead
3/5
I enjoyed it, the music is good
But I'm not interested in live albums
Fine. 3
Tim Buckley
3/5
Not bad. It's a decently liked 3. Can't complain. Got better as it went along
Spiritualized
4/5
This is really really good.
It's spacey, atmospheric, epic, rousing, anthemic. Found myself humming over the top different wee melodies because of how much room they leave on these songs, but its not an absence of anything. It's beautiful
Lana Del Rey
4/5
A wonderfully beautiful soundscape
It's really really good. Taylor Swift owes this girl money because she's been directly lifting stuff from this album for years
Pulp
4/5
Some really good songs on this record.
The length of the last song with thr elongated note that goes on for like 9 mins ruins the vibe.
I'm A Man is a good tune
Sylvia is another enjoyable song
David Holmes
2/5
Fine
Unremarkable
Dexys Midnight Runners
3/5
Geno is a classic
Burn it Down is decent
Seven Days is Too Long is a highlight
It's not bad but 3 dexy albums is insane
Pantera
2/5
Imagine listening to this twice before 9am.
For 92 it sounds incredibly dated. So unbelievably dated. Feels like metallica had already done this ten years earlier.
It has that marching beat that I don't like in metal music. Very one tempo, very uninteresting, very hollow sounding. When there's a guitar solo and the rhythm drops out it sounds so empty
Depeche Mode
4/5
Super interesting
Good vibes, great singles, but the album tracks are great. Greater opener
Joni Mitchell
3/5
Yeah pretty good
Easy to listen too
A lot of joni on this list. Don't want to hold it against this album
If its a 4, it's barely a 4, maybe a high 3
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
There are lots of positives.
But man it's long, and when I'm listening to it, I sometimes forget I'm listening to it. It isn't holding my concentration at all.
Crosstown Traffic is awesome. Little Miss Strange is good, Watchtower is great, but man oh man you could cut 30 mins
The Roots
3/5
Very long
Content is decent
But man, some editing on these albums wouldn't go a miss. Why are we making a 42min album into a 70+ min album. It's unnecessary and doesn't add to the experience. It makes it harder for a first time listener
Fussy Galore is a good tune
Album closer sucks
Faith No More
3/5
So dated, so cringey, but better than I thought. If someone came in and I was listening to it, I'd probably die inside. Even the good parts are embarrassing
Animal Collective
4/5
Really good really strong interesting
Good vibes the whole time and likely a grower
One for da future
Arcade Fire
5/5
Really great
I mean this as a positive, but it seems like they picked a really good melody and just did it for 45 mins. It sounds great. Could be released then, would be as good if it was released today. Top stuff
Robert Wyatt
3/5
Definitely seemed more interesting on first listen
Still good, some really good interesting bits of songs thrown together. Not sure it's hits the level or anything Floyd but so much better than that Syd album
Ok
Milton Nascimento
3/5
Fine to an extent
Enjoyable in the background
CHVRCHES
4/5
Great
Really easy listen
Nice voice
Good
James Taylor
3/5
Not bad
Does what it says on the tin
3
Lucinda Williams
2/5
Absolutely fine
Not my thing
Not a genre I like
But good voice, okay songs.
Fine
Queens of the Stone Age
2/5
The last track is unforgivable. Imagine listening to those god damn bleep bloops with earphones. Just annoying as fuck. Ruined the whole thing
Pretentious boring dross
Love
3/5
Feels very off the cuff, decent
Metallica
4/5
There are things I dont like about this album. It's very one tempo at times. A lot of the songs seem to have that really standard 4/4 timing beat lars used up until st anger. It can make things a little dull.
But generally the album is pretty darn good. Classics like sandman, unforgiven and nothing else matter. Kind of hate Sad But True but its fine.
Bon Jovi
3/5
There is something a little embarrassing about this album. It's cringey, it's dated, it is very much what it is.
But
It's got 2 massive singles that I'm absolutely sick of in Bad Name and Prayer, and 2 great singles in Wanted and Gooodbye.
Wild In the Streets sounds like a bruce song off the river.
The rest of the album tracks are okay.
It's a 3
The Sabres Of Paradise
2/5
The 90s and the invent of the cd seems a real case of people trying to use the entire length of the cd, which can be a major negative
This album could be 30 mins
Simply Red
3/5
Betted than I thought, but cringey
Pretenders
3/5
Good
Jimmy Smith
2/5
Fine
The Pogues
3/5
There is a wonderful kind of melancholy about this record. It sounds incredibly Irish, in a good way. I wouldn't be a huge fan of a lot of the instrumentation of the album. A lot of it is a style that I don't really like, however i can tell that it's very very solid, the playing is great. The musicianship is quite wonderful.
I think I'd lean with a 3, which reflects it not really being my thing, but also a good record. I'm not sure how often I would dust it off to listen to it, but it's enjoyable none the less
The Gun Club
3/5
Pretty good, assume will get better with revisits
Neil Young
3/5
Good.
Definitely not one of the better NY albums on the list so far, but good. Just missing that one big song that ties it all together
3
Louis Prima
3/5
Yeah ok better than I thought it would be
Kid Rock
1/5
Fuck that.
Big old slice of noooooope
X-Ray Spex
3/5
Good, really decent.
Loud sharp, aggressive in all the right ways.
Minor Threat
4/5
Fast, aggressive, angry, beautiful
Short and sweet
A4 for sure
White Denim
4/5
Really enjoyed this one. Is and Is and Is was the standout. It's a good mixture of a few different things.
Between a high 3 and a 4
Incredible Bongo Band
1/5
This is one of the biggest "why is this on the list?" Of any.
Waste of time. I could be listening to anything else right now but instead I'm listening to an album that's pretty much the backing tracks of other famous songs.
I would give this a zero if it was possible
Waste
Of
Time
Feels like people rating it a 5 are maybe trying to be different, and fair play, if we were all the same how different would life be.
This is trash
Emmylou Harris
3/5
Way way better than her other album on the list.
I will give both a 3, but this is a 3.8 and the other was just about a 3.
Nice voice, some good songs. Maybe missing something a bit weirder to get a higher mark
N.W.A.
4/5
NWA - Sraight outta Compton
Superb, and in an era when every rap/hip hop group would have 10 mins of unfunny skits on records, it's so refreshing this album has none.
Very high 4
Slipknot
2/5
We are in the dregs now. I had it too good for 600 days
It's not like actively disgraceful but its pretty bad. It could do with some melody. Nu metal had a really specific time frame and outside of that time frame this music sounds unbelievably shit
It'll be a 2, because it sounds like having a number 2. WHO DOES NUMBER 2 WORK FOR???
The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
3/5
What an unappealing start to an album with someone screaming for 10 seconds, which is a shame because its a good song
Firefly Child is excellent
Eyeballin has some really interesting percussion
Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band
1/5
This is fucking shite. Just a bunch of noise most of the time. Awful, truly awful, one of the worst on the list
If someone told me they liked this, more than anything, I'd think they were lying. You can like whatever you want buy i wouldn't believe you
Stereolab
3/5
Pretty damn good. Definitely likely a grower. On the higher end of a 3
Christina Aguilera
4/5
Walk Away - great ballad, great intro to Fighter
Fighter - probably her best song
Underappreaciated - really decent
Soar - Interesting song
The singles are humongous. Voice Within, Beautiful, Fighter, Diiiirty
Baaba Maal
3/5
Second half very interesting. Ok
Radiohead
5/5
This sounds so good today.
Might have to rethink my radiohead rankings
I think this is a 5. It's a little bit long, but everything on it is great. Really enjoyable. I should be listening to them way more than I do. It's just such a good album. Everything fits, everything roles into the next thing. Production is superb. All good
Black Sabbath
3/5
In my mind I always think of sabbath as this really heavy heavy band, but this just doesn't feel that heavy. It's good, but not like heavy and its probably better for that
Ray Price
2/5
It's fair to say its all a bit samey. Same pace, same chords the same baseline throughout every song
It's fine. Decent, but its bit sorta just the same the whole way through, Nothing stands out, so even though it's relatively short, it feels long
Joy Division
3/5
Yeah pretty good
Sad and mopey in all the right ways. Reminds me of early Cure.
Good, very good
Badly Drawn Boy
4/5
Bit long. 20 mins too long
Disillusion is very enjoyable. Everything is decent, but that song stands out. Some of the album sounds like a British elliot smith, some doesn't.
Buffalo Springfield
3/5
Yeah fine. I think its good. Not gonna call it one of the best, but its short and everything is good enough
Lou Reed
4/5
Sad song is an excellent closer. Best song on the album
This album feels like a massive swing, and I think it ends up being a home run. Really really enjoyable. Really interesting, artsy in all the right ways. Maybe the best stuff I've ever heard from Reed
How Do You Think It Feels is another great song. At the end with the brass band and the guitar solo, just sounds great
Ramblin' Jack Elliott
1/5
Not my thing at all
Shite genre and not an album that stands out.
Biggest positive is that it is short. But as I say that, I kept thinking it was over and it keep fucking going
Tune your fucking guitar
I will never ever listen to this trash again. I see reviews on here with people complaining about 80s music. Aye okay, listen to this shite instead
Woeful
0/5
Stereo MC's
4/5
Connected is such a good tune.
Everything is good. It's a little dated, but not in a bad way. It just happens to have two big massive singles
The Dave Brubeck Quartet
2/5
I dont know what to say... fine?
Not what I started the list for.
Take 5 plus 32 more minutes?
Beastie Boys
2/5
The bit in 5 second diner when it breaks into a fast country song probably says everything i feel about this group and this album
It does nothing for me, and a little annoying.
Is it any worse than the other two albums on the list? Dunno, don't really care either. All I know is that to sit through this twice is a task. Just not for me at all
Shadrach is fine, so well done. Nothing is as good as Intergalactic. It's just not for me. There was a lot more interesting things going on in the genre at the time
It's bad when the parody of the thing is better than the thing
The last 12 min song is like the end of Abbey Road, if the end of Abbey Road was written by a bad musician
The Rolling Stones
5/5
There are some stones albums on this list i haven't enjoyed. This is not one of them. This one is great. One of their best that I've heard
Wild Horses is top 3 stones song. So good
If this isn't the best Stones album, it's top 3.
I like everything on it. It's gonna be a 5
The Who
3/5
I dont have any interest in live albums being on the list.
It's fine
Common
3/5
Far far too long, no where as his 2006 album on the list, but it does feel like he's doing something more interesting than 2000s hip hop. In a time of awful shit like Eminem, his backing tracks are different and more musically satisfying
Eurythmics
4/5
Very very decent.
What a voice. What a charismatic lady. Great production
Tricky
3/5
Pretty decent
Easy to listen to
Better than it's description
Solid 3
Bauhaus
3/5
Good
Short and sweet
M.I.A.
3/5
I had really high expectations for this, and thought it would possibly be a 5.
But in reality it's nowhere near that kind of talk. It's still good but at times it's quite irritating and annoying more than anything else
I'd still give it a 3
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
4/5
There's a couple of all timers on here. Breakdown and American Girl are superb
So short and so sweet.
Rockin Around is a good opener
Ray Charles
3/5
I don't particularly like it, but its definitely good to an extent.
Fair play ray, 3 on me lad
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
5/5
I saw the length and wanted to be kind of negative
How Can You be negative when something like There She Goed My Beautiful World comes on. Brilliant.
Let The Bells Ring - another good song, really nice guitar riff playing constantly.
Supernaturally - Brilliant
I wanna say "too long" but its hard when everything is good
We are going 5
Throwing Muses
3/5
Its actually fine.
I'm not sure something like this deserves a place on the list. It's not made any sort of lasting impact. Its good but not blow away incredible.
Depeche Mode
4/5
This is so right up my street that it's pretty much outside the front door
Excellent album. The piano sounds so good. Great melodies. Easy to listen to. Perfect length. Couple of stone cold classics.
Strangelove is so good. Honestly one of the best songs I've heard doing this
Steely Dan
5/5
People do not talk about Steely Dan enough. This bad is legitimately superb.
Everything about it man. You can just have it on repeat constantly. It's not even 10 30 and I'm on my 4th listen so far.
Its giving 5 vibes.
I loved the other two albums, but this is another level. Brilliant
Peg is so good
Saint Etienne
3/5
Decent
Not sure it should be on the list,
But its easy to listen to. Interesting neil young cover. Fairly enjoyable. Standard 3
Fishbone
2/5
Fishbone - Truth and Soul
As someone who likes both ska and funk, I also like onions and ice cream, but they don't go great together. I like some parts of it and I don't think its bad, but if someone came in and I was listened to this, I'd be more embarrassed than if someone came in and I was watching Debbie Does Dallas.
Maybe 2/5
Maxwell
3/5
The bassist from this album needs a raise. Every bass line is outrageous, it's the background and forefront of every second of every song
..til The Cops Come Knockin.. so funky, so good.
The middle section with the ballads in a row kinda stops the momentum. Still good songs, but just loses the flow a little.
Jungle Brothers
3/5
Yeah fine
Was nice to hear a couple of seconds of You Should Be Dancing.
Decent
Blondie
5/5
Wow
I think the keyword is 'fun,'. This is a super fun record, filled with massive hit singles.
For a pop record, it meshes a lot of different genres together. One of the best female frontmen ever. Just super fun
Maybe one of the best so far. Heart of Glass is a stone cold classic. Sunday Girl is brilliant. All good
John Martyn
3/5
Waaaaaay better than it has any right to be. Really enjoyable. Funky at times. Good voice.
Dancing is one of the best songs I've heard from the list so far
Kacey Musgraves
4/5
High Horse is a banger
Everything just sounds like a hit
Its not super my thing. But its definitely enjoyable.
This is the only way I can enjoy country music, when it's barely country music
The closer Rainbow, is like a beautiful billy joel ballad, and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. It's beautiful
Destiny's Child
2/5
Survivor - Destiny's Child
I was happy enough with giving a 3, until it got to the end and the committed one of my ultimate sins in music.. a song that's just a list of thank yous. That's what linear notes are for. It makes the song have no re-listen value and just annoys me more than it should
2/5
Red Hot Chili Peppers
5/5
Blood sugar sex magik - red hot chili peppers
This is one of those ones I've had to separate the art from the artist. As a 12 year old, this was my favourite artist, and this is probably one of my most listened to albums of all time. However, as I got older I realised how atrocious of a human being Anthony was. Then it gets to the point where some of the lyrics on the album are likely influenced by some pretty heinous shit and it completely changes how you look at them.
That said, I do think this is a really fantastic album. I think the two big singles; under the bridge and give it away are absolutely classics. The other singles Breaking the Girl, Suck my Kiss and If You Have to Ask are great. Most of the album tracks (with the exception of The Greeting song and maybe naked in the rain) are superb, I Could Have Lied and My Lovely man in particular
So I'll go with a 5 but its a dated 5 with the knowledge that the lead single is a sex offender
The Zutons
2/5
Perfectly fine but I could have died never hearing this and I won't remember that I've listened to it this time next week
Adam & The Ants
3/5
A liiiiittle disappointing. Thought this could have been a 5. It's a 3
Ms. Dynamite
3/5
Way better than i thought it would be. A very very high 3
PJ Harvey
3/5
Pretty good
Not her best on the list but does the job
3
Donovan
2/5
Pretty okay. Not gonna win any awards but inoffensive
Guided By Voices
3/5
I like the concept, I like some of it.
The only issue for me is that there's far to many songs. The length is fine generally but it just keeps going and going and becomes a little boring. First listen was fine, second I'm looking at how long is left
William Orbit
3/5
Never gonna be a 2 or a 5.
Decent
Bit forgettable
But never bad
Flamin' Groovies
2/5
Not feeling it
Bonnie "Prince" Billy
3/5
Pretty decent
Aerosmith
3/5
Too many areosmith albums on this list for sure. But to be fair, this is the best one I've heard. Didn't know any songs off this one before hand, and I think that probably makes it even better.
The closer is great
John Martyn
3/5
No harm to John Martyn, the albums fine
But why has he got 2 albums on this list? I think one is fairly generous with some of the omissions, but 2 is overkill
Screw it just put his whole discography on there like he's the beatles
Man really likes jam
SAULT
3/5
Untitled (black is) - Sault
678 albums in
I only have the time for 2 and a half listens today, and this strikes me as an album that constantly gets better. I think I'll keep this one in my library. Chilled out, easy to listen to
A very high 3/5 but with room to get better.
Alice Cooper
3/5
I Love The Dead is the standout.
The rest is standard fair. Pretty decent, Nothing to write home about. Opener is pretty tidy too.
It does get better on a second listen. There's a musical quality to it, it feels like the soundtrack to a really great play
Better than Schools Out by a distance. I'm thinking 3
The Cure
4/5
Depressing
Moody
Gloomy
Amazing
Really great record. A very very high 4
Queen
3/5
Really decent
Closer is great, killer queen is killer queen
Good
Paul McCartney
4/5
So many good songs and the standouts are obvious; Junk, Every Night and Maybe I'm Amazed.
Lots of nice little instrumental tracks. Lots of great melodies, lots of great stuff.
I perhaps wouldn't have it on the level of Band on the Run, but still great
A real pleasure to listen to this one. It's on the cusp of a 5, but a high 4 of the highest order for sure
3/5
There is a lot of good
But never a good sign when the first track is the best song on an album by far.
Still good.
Too long.
Blue Jeans is good.
Korn
2/5
Far far far too long.
Its not a genre I'm a huge fan of. Its a bit messy and uninspiring and drags quite a bit because of the length but its decent enough
One listen is enough lad
2/5
N.E.R.D
3/5
In my head, before listening, I was thinking, this has a chance of being a 5. It has Maybe and She Wants to Move, if the other tracks are even pretty good, it's got a chance of being a classic.
I'm not sure there is much else on here . It's decent, just not to those levels
I think the production sounds a little "unmastered" at times. Something like The Way She Dances, sounds a fantastic song is being hidden by poor production. Still a great song, but feels like the good parts are covered by poor sonic choices
I think its the chorus on Breakout when i start to not like it as much. Good verses, nice tempo, nice groove, good pre chorus, then it goes into that fast bit that feels so out of place. Ruins a good song
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
3/5
Short and sweet. Fast and loud
Pretty decent
Not as good as their other one on the list but good
Easy 3
Q-Tip
4/5
Q Tip - The Renaissance
This is such an easy listen. I worry with an album like this that sometimes they go 65 mins+ and lose a bit of momentum and end up becoming a chore, but every time this album has ended today I've clicked on the play button straight away.
I think I'm going just about a 4.
Really enjoyed it
GZA
2/5
Too long, too many skits
I won't remember I've listened to this in 2 days. Usually I'm quite forgiving with the early mid 90s rap albums, but this one isn't doing anything for me
2/5
The Thrills
4/5
I'm glad this is on the list, its probably a slightly underrated time in music and this album feels way different than most of the music in the charts at the time.
The 4 singles are all top notch, so it's just up to the 7 album tracks not to screw it up
Tom Waits
3/5
To say this is way way way way way way better than the other Tom Waits albums on the list isn't much of a compliment, but this album is far better than those. Its still Tom Waits so it's not like actually brilliant or anything.
Jersey Girl is good
The Saints
3/5
Does exactly what it says on the ti
3
Ministry
2/5
Imagine having a first listen of this at 7:30am on a beautiful day. Its not ideal.
I'm not particularly in the mood for this, but i always give them a chance
Its fine, I wouldn't say it was good because I try not to lie.
2 listens and I'll never listen again.
2
Could you imagine listening to this for pleasure. Jesus christ
D'Angelo
3/5
Really easy listen.
Everything is the same level. All decent
.
Bass and vocals are excellent.
Higher 3
4/5
Really really interesting.
The three songs are excellent
Its experimental in all the right ways
Feels like a 4
Ice Cube
2/5
While there are a lot of positives. There are alot of negatives
1 skits. Stop putting unfunny skits on rap albums. Even if they were funny, dont put them on an album. It's a waste of time, it inflates the length by a stupid amount
2 too many of the songs are about having sex with Ice Cube, something I have no interest in
Some of its good, but during the first listen, the idea of a second listen exhausted me
Moby
5/5
Its unusual for an album to have 8 singles, it's even more unusual for them all to be known, and even more unusual for all of them to be great.
I would find it hard to pick a favourite single, maybe I'd go Why Does My Heart Feel So Bad.
Of the instrumental non singles, Everloving is beautiful. Rushing is another great instrumental, lovely piano riff beautiful. These little parts stitch the whole thing together
Fever Ray
3/5
I like it
First listen nothing jumped out, still good but not world changing, probably confused as to why something like this would make the list. But good
Aphex Twin
3/5
Quite good
Far far far too long. Taking the piss with the length. Bumps it Down a whole grade
Richard Hawley
4/5
At times it sounds like a cross between morrisey solo and roy orbison.
I enjoy a lot of the background sounds. Good use of different instruments
Hotel Room is proper good.
As is The Ocean. Great build up. This one gets better and better.
I really like alot of the simple lead guitar lines
I think this might just scratch a 4.
3/5
This feels like one of those 'if you dont like it, you aren't cool'.
I do like it, it do think its aggressively battling against being even slightly catchy, a bit try hard. But its clearly good
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
I have been pretty consistent with decent marks for elvis costello, and this one will be no different, but at the same time, much like Neil Young, nick cave, radiohead perhaps we don't need to include this many of one artist. I like all of the above, but just feels like overkill. And thats not a reaction to this album, as its quite enjoyable
Shabby Doll is great
Pentangle
1/5
Dull, boring, boring, boring, dull, crap.
2 listens of this is going to be a struggle
One listen is bad enough. Imagine sticking this on for pleasure.
Imagine someone walking in when you were listening to this
I think this might be my least favourite genre
BAMO
Pere Ubu
2/5
Generally fine
Bit try hard
Bit boring
Fine
Afrika Bambaataa
4/5
Old school hip hop in its absolute best form. No skits, decent length, backing music is really enjoyable. So 80s.
Very enjoyable
Curtis Mayfield
3/5
Really good
Really smooth
Great voice
Easy listen
Dr. Octagon
2/5
Too many skits.
Skits suck
Annoying because there is good stuff on this.
Too long. Far too long
Goldfrapp
3/5
Good
Not as good as their other album on the list but good.
The circus song kinda hurts the momentum but good
Boston
4/5
First listen was over in a flash.
First two songs are absolutely classics
The closer is outstanding
Foreplay/Long Time is interesting
The Doors
2/5
Not for me
Dull
The End is good, the rest is mediocre
Iggy Pop
3/5
Definitely better than i thought. Sounds more Bowie than I was expecting. Better than the stooges. Decent
The War On Drugs
3/5
Very good
Good melodies, easy to hum along to having never heard it before. Enjoyable
High 3
Motörhead
3/5
While everything was good, it felt much much longer than 35 mins.
Good but not life changing
Rocket From The Crypt
3/5
On a Rope is great
Sounded like ska without being ska
Enjoyed it a lot.
3
The Crusaders
3/5
Streetlife is an incredible song. INCREDIBLE
2Pac
4/5
Starts with a skit and is far too long
But, classic. Heavy in the Game, excellent
Dear Mama, excellent
F THE WORLD is probably the best song on the album
Deerhunter
3/5
Its quite good. Relaxing, good vibe
None of it particularly memorable but maybe that comes with repeat listens, but honestly it's quite nice so maybe id get there some day
Is it a 3 for now with room for future growth? Maybe
Astrud Gilberto
2/5
Perfectly fine, well sung etc
Just not remotely my thing
Fine 2/5
k.d. lang
2/5
Bland
Not my thing
Dull
Pointless
Dwight Yoakam
1/5
Crap music performed at an average level
Crap
Nitty Gritty Dirt Band
1/5
Yeah I absolutely hate this
Not helped by having 4 country albums in 5 days. Is this the worst of them? Don't even know. But it is the longest by far. It doesnt respect my time and I don't respect it
Utter drivel
Madness
3/5
Ive had a run of awful albums so this was a nice change
However id be lying if I said I wasn't a little disappointed with it. Our House stands out like a sore thumb, it's not only the best, but its the best by a mile.
The rest is fine, but not as good as I was expecting
Its a 3
The Black Keys
3/5
Its a bit long for what it is, but good. Laid back at times. Decent
John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
1/5
Listening to some racist play 13 bar blues for 40 mins isn't my idea of fun
Easily one of the worst records on this list. Boring, predictable, shite
I could be listening to anything else right now
Boring, predictable, shite.
Ive had a really shocking list of albums in the last two weeks. Its a level under mediocre, the 3s have been barely a 3 and rest have been as bad as this absolute turd.
Im gonna give it a 1, which is interesting as its the biggest number 2 I've heard in my life.
Genuinely one of the worst on the list. Actually evil.
God I thought it was over and then the 12 bar blues kicked in.
The biggest positive is that after one listen, that's it, i never have to listen to this guff again. One and done. Eric Crapton. Layla is good, but unfortunately it wasn't on this album .
ITS OVER THANK THE LORD
Mudhoney
3/5
Im only listening to the first release of this album. The ep version
Decent
Tim Buckley
3/5
Absolutely fine
Its been a rough run of bad to meh albums so this one is probably helped by that. Okay
Bob Marley & The Wailers
3/5
Good, pretty good.
I am not sure if I'll push for a 4, high 3. Good, but I've had a really rough run of unremarkable albums. Really need a classic or something
John Cale
4/5
Really really good.
Unexpected
Title track, opener and closer all good
Best album I've had in a while
4
2/5
Too long
Live
Worse versions of great songs
2 and thats generous
The Stooges
3/5
Pretty decent
Almost tempted to give it a 2 after that last track that is just noise, but there is more than enough outside of that to lift it to a 3. Some good saxophone at some point
Far too much stooge and iggy though
Love
3/5
Track one is such a banger.
I think i listened to this album in 2019 and enjoyed it, but not retained anything from it, but its fairly decent
Soft Machine
1/5
This is gonna be a struggle for me because I think its wanky bullshit
Bob Dylan
4/5
As dylan goes, pretty good. Better than most of his albums on the list. A touch too long but good
The Smashing Pumpkins
4/5
Really really good
Far too long
Disarm is incredibly good
4 maybe
The Beta Band
3/5
Decent
Not as good as their other one but good
Frank Black
4/5
This is a really impressive effort
It's too long
But everything has a certain quality
You think you have an idea of where the melody is going and then he changes it up
The Vanishing Spies is the highlight, happy, lovely solo, just good vibes
Fiddle Riddle has a nice ska feel
Speedy Marie is good.
I prefer this to a few of the pixies albums, but 22 songs is overkill. Very good though
4
The Kinks
3/5
Its good
Not as good as I thought it was gonna be, but good. Kinks have been slightly disappoting for me when I've tried to get into them in this project. They are good but im always waiting for something to blow me away. If something like Strangers was on this, i be blown away
3
Jane's Addiction
4/5
I like Summertime Rolls. Good vibe, slushy guitar soundscapes.
Jane Says is really good. Nice sounded acoustic guitar driving the song with a few different instruments. Strong second half to the album
George Michael
4/5
Listen without Prejudice v1 - George Michael
One of those ones where everything is pretty high level. Really really good pop album. Nearly every song sounds like a single
4/5
Big Star
5/5
Classic.
Real classic
The ballad of el goodo is one of the greatest songs of all time.
Im not sure there is another record of this style thats as good as this one
All good lad
3/5
Good
Sharp fast straight to the point
Bill Evans Trio
1/5
While technically very good and played to a high level, I cannot stress how little interest I have in this.
I would say im not alone as you can hear people in the background have conversations and ignore the playing.
Tom Tom Club
3/5
I think while its sounds quite dated, everything is really good. Always interesting musically, good little turns here and there
I could see myself liking it more and more if I came back to it
Drive Like Jehu
3/5
While its quite good. There are a number of annoying artistic choices on it. Starting a song with 20 seconds of horrible feedback is just wanky.
There's some beautifully haunting riffs, New Intro sounds like something you'd hear on a post rock album from the mid 00s.
Good but too long and wanky at parts
The B-52's
2/5
Its certainly irritating. It's fine like, but not the sort of thing id listen to for pleasure.
Its fine
Annoying but fine
Willie Colón & Rubén Blades
2/5
Probably the best a salsa album can be.
The first 10 seconds gave the impression it was going to have a disco slant, but that goes out the window pretty quickly.
I dont know what more I can really say. Its salsa music
Roxy Music
3/5
While i like this album, its not close to the level of their debut album. It doesnt have that weird and wonderful dimension
Its good.
Just not amazing
Girls Against Boys
3/5
Really ok
Laura Nyro
3/5
This album would really suit being about 33mins. Too long, too many songs.
Lou Reed
4/5
Hard to not realise the greatness with Perfect Day on there.
Probably around the 4 mark
Will revisit
Tom Waits
1/5
Can I please be done with tom waits now
Honestly this is so bad. If you like it, you are just pretending.
Its bad and if you like it you might be bad
Frank Sinatra
2/5
Bit disappoting. Been disappointed by Frank on this list. Feels like its missing a banger or 3.
Voice is good, but feels like a bit safe and samey
Beatles
5/5
What more can you say about an album like this.
Absolute classic.
Kicks off with Taxman, amazing.
Elanor Rigby, incredible.
I'm Only Sleeping, great.
There are songs I never think of, but then when I put them on, I remember how great they are.
For No One, a former favourite Beatles song for myself. The little instrumental break is perfect.
Doctor Robert, great, great harmonies
Arcade Fire
4/5
Its clearly not Suburbs, and at its core its very simple, simple structures, simple melodies, simple songs.
But its a breeze to listen to, everything is the same quality, and the band cannot be blamed for the pale imitations that followed that were bland as possible. This drifts, but I would go as far to say its bland. It's fairly good
Genesis
5/5
Superb. No notes
Last track is so damn good
Bit self indulgent but that probably makes it better. Very very good
Scott Walker
3/5
Standard. Good
Not life changing, but not everything is
Elton John
5/5
This feels like a masterpiece.
Its so so good.
Tiny Dancer is spectacular. Levon is incredible
All the Nasties is superb. All of it is good, and the standouts are so good. Love this record
Soft Cell
3/5
Its decent but i was expecting something that could end up being a 5 but this is really a 3. Decent but 3
The Magnetic Fields
4/5
The Book of Love is such a beautiful song.
The big issue is, the album lasts 3 hours. It could have the greatest songs of all-time and 3 hours is far too long. Ideally I listen to these albums 4 times. If I listened to this 4 times, it would literally be 90% of the time im awake.
I won't be able to listen to it twice and despite the quality I wouldn't want to
Disc 1 on its own is great
Love like Jazz sucks
No One Will Ever Love You is really good
Disc 2 is more upbeat. Very intriguing
Disc 2 is actually better than disc 1. Insane how good this when the length is so unappealing
Black Sabbath
3/5
Actually pretty good.
All standard fair, but good and then there was a nice slower breakdown at one point that was enjoyable
High 3
Björk
4/5
Bjork is pretty damn awesome
Its very very good. Its not as good as vespertine, but what is
Joanna Newsom
3/5
I wish this was on Spotify because its good such a continuous vibe, that is being ruined by YouTube ads.
But its good, and its different than I thought it would be. But good.
Johnny Cash
2/5
I dont like his music.
This is okay
But I dont like it
But thats just my opinion, its not actively bad or evil, just something I think its unappealing and a little shit
Mekons
3/5
The opener is very very good.
The rest isn't that level, but still really enjoyable. Can't say I understand how something like this qualifies as something you have to hear before you die, but its still decent
Antony and the Johnsons
3/5
Nice voice, there's a beauty to the whole thing. After 2 listens I would say, which it has quality, it is slightly unremarkable
Curtis Mayfield
4/5
Theres No Place Like America Today - Curtis Mayfield
Really enjoyed this one. Short and a breeze to get through, easy to listen, great vocals, sounds great
4/5
Sebadoh
3/5
Fine
Shouldn't be on the list, but good to an extent
John Prine
2/5
Its the best of what it is
Unfortunately I dont like what it is at all
The songs are okay and to be fair the songs sound different from one another. But its far too long. I wouldn't listen out of pleasure
Cat Stevens
5/5
Incredible
Everything on the album is very good and I may single out every single song, but Miles From Nowhere is that song that ties everything together. Brilliant song.
Longer Boats is so good, that chorus just gets better and bigger each time. When the drums kick in, so good.
Where Do The Children Play has a similar vibe, where the last chorus is the same thing but he sings in a manner that lifts the song even more.
Father and Son, Tea, Sad Lisa, all massive great songs, and then Wild World is on another level
The strings on Into White are incredible
Kanye West
4/5
Sometimes people are the worst can do good things. This album is good. He absolutely sucks as a human, hes utter scum and I dont listen to him for pleasure now, not one bit.
Never let me Down is the highlight. Family Business is good. The singles are great. Too many skits, too long
I cant stress this enough; fuck kanye.
4/5
Bob Dylan
3/5
While this album is interesting, the last song ruins it. Its a really really bad song and lasts for so long.
Im gonna go 3, I hadnt heard the album in 20 years. It was better than it seems, but its a bit one note.
Fine
Public Image Ltd.
2/5
Verging somewhere between not that good and annoying
MC Solaar
3/5
Really decent
Easy to listen to
Hypnotic rhyming and rthymn
Garbage
4/5
The singles are very very sharp and punchy.
Album tracks are good too. The whole thing is good and likely eventually better with more listens, but very good
Between a 3 and a 4
Big Star
3/5
Im not sure which version im supposed to listen to because there are like 50 versions
But what I've listened to is very good, not as good as their debut, but good
3, but again, this isnt the full album so what does a 3 really mean
Lambchop
3/5
Its very good.
Very pleasant
Easy listen
Tangerine Dream
2/5
Aye fine
Suicide
3/5
Very good
Quick
Easy listen
Decent
Happy Mondays
3/5
Easy listen, enjoyable, not really a single on the whole thing, but enjoyable nonetheless
Good
Easy 3 baby
Buena Vista Social Club
2/5
Decent. Not my thing, but not bad
Elvis Costello & The Attractions
4/5
Battered Old Bird is excellent. I think the whole thing is good, but the second half is definitely stronger
Can
3/5
This is so close to a 4, but the penultimate track seemed to annoy me so much ill probably have to take it down to a 3.
I like a lot about it. Its interesting, experimental, I like a lot of the effects and soundscapes.
Good
Bob Marley & The Wailers
4/5
Really good
Best bob marley album on the list
Because every little song, is at least okay
King Crimson
2/5
Wanky dull music doing its best to sound "different"
There's a few nice moments. The start of Book of Saturday
Its like early genesis gone wrong. Ron's gone wrong
4/5
Spirit -Twelve Dreams of Dr Sardonicus
When I saw this was the album name, I just thought it was going to be one of those albums from the late 60s early 70s, that tries to be wacky and weird and just ends up being cringey and dated
However, this album is great. Really enjoyed it. Easy listen, lots of catchy bits, really enjoyable
4/5
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
2/5
Fine
Bland
Fine
M.I.A.
3/5
Annoying in quite a good way. Annoying in all the right ways.
Good singles, interesting samples, good beat, good vocals. Interesting
High 3 lad
The Shamen
2/5
Interesting to an extent
Far too long
At times it sounds like casio piano demo with a soundboard playing quotes over the top.
When I'm 2/3 the way through, the idea of a second listen is exhausting
Buck Owens
2/5
Better than most country on the list
But a decent looking rat is still a rat.
Fine but shite
The Fall
2/5
Very very long for what it is.
This is the 3rd or 4th album they've had so far on this list and I think its reached the point where now I expect something more impressive.
The idea of a third listen seems like punishment
Its fine but its not exactly good.
Cheap Trick
2/5
A cheap trick live album? On a list of the 1001 albums to hear before you die?
While surrender is an amazing song, im not sure there is single good reason you could give for this album being on this list.
The United States Of America
2/5
I'm sure this is fine, but im a long long way into this project now, and im really not in the mood for wanky shit with nothing about it.
I've become jaded and honestly despite my reviews of areosmith albums on this list I'd rather just listen to Jaded for 40 mins than this
It just feels so try hard. Things that are fine but with weird sound affects over the top because im assuming they heard revolver and thought, we'll just make something weird!!.
This will be five 2* in a row, which makes everything a bit daunting, im pretty sure there is going to be a lot more of this kind of thing in the last 200, and that just makes the whole thing feel like a task instead of enjoyment
The Adverts
4/5
I dont know if its because all the albums have been bad recently, but this is great.
Van Morrison
4/5
I hate this dweeb
But this is a bloody good album
Good album
Van Halen
3/5
Honestly, a bit of fun.
Is it one of the best albums of all time? Certainly not. Is it amazing, no.
But it's fun. Way better than the other Van Halen album on the list
But its a 3
Terence Trent D'Arby
4/5
Really fun, upbeat, a breeze to get through
The singles are superb. Wishing well very very good.
Sepultura
2/5
Meh
Not in the mood, ive liked a lot of the metal, this just felt meh.
Ray Charles
3/5
Good, great voice decent songs
Björk
4/5
I wish I could have more time with this as I feel like its something that would grow over time
Its great and I'll stick with a 4 now but im sure if I kept it in rotation it would be a game changer
Sepultura
1/5
Better than their other piece of shit but still crap. Sounds so dated and lasts forever. Genuinely lasts forever
Crap
Canyon Jam fucking sucks
Muddy Waters
2/5
Another live album, eugh.
Fine, not my thing, not an artist I enjoy, but performed well
Neu!
4/5
Really interesting
Really wonderful
It feels like every song could be written by a different person in a wonderful way. It all sounds different but under the same blanket
I can hear things that it's massively inspired from the 70s til now
Very good
George Harrison
5/5
As i enter the last run I had worried a little that I didn't have as many classic albums left, but then comes this one.
My Sweet Lord is incredible
Let It Down is amazing, can't believe john and paul didnt like it. Incredible
Its long, far too long, but everything is superb, I do wish I could listen to it on 3 cds because the track listing on Spotify is a bit inconsistent, but everything is great
Ice Cube
3/5
Second listen you can just skip all the boring skits.
Its pretty okay, decent even. I was a bit gutted when it was the album for today as I'm not gonna find out more about Ice Cube from listening to this, its not too much different than his previous, it doesn't take big swings, its just fine
Kings of Leon
1/5
A third kings of leon album?? You have to be taking the piss. Its 1/5 on principle
Buzzcocks
3/5
This isn't a total reflection on the quality of this album, but now im in the last 200ish, I think its clear that ive gone past the point of true greatness, and ive got a lot of "okay" left. Albums that are fine, but clearly not particularly something you should hear before you die. Something like this will never get above a 3 or below a 3, it was born on 3 and will finish on 3.
I think 800 days in, im struggling a little
Brian Eno
3/5
Chilled good
I'll come running was the highlight
Solid
The Hives
3/5
Sharp, aggressive, in your face, fast, catchy. Really good. Reminds me of The Beatsteaks. Good.
T. Rex
3/5
Really easy, sounds cool. Really good
Miles Davis
2/5
Fine background stuff, but just not my thing at all. Its a genre I don't like at all, even if its performed quite well, it just doesn't do anything for me
ABBA
4/5
Yes this is fucking great. Perhaps not as good as Arrival, but man, really good. Really strong songs
Just to get it out of the way, I don't love I Let The Music Speak, its fine, but it sticks out compared to the rest of the album, a bit too much like a rejected song from Fiddler.
But they follow it with the best song on the album, the absolutely superb One of Us. The backing vocals are incredible on the chorus
Two For The Price of One, is another really good good song, with awesome backing vocals
Maybe it is as good as Arrival?
Super Furry Animals
4/5
Great album
The strings, the vibes, so good
I really like it and think I could grow to love it
Björk
4/5
Not as good as Vespertine, maybe not as good as Debut, but pretty damn great.
The constant need to take risks, in a world where so many artists play it safe, album after album, is so refreshing.
Definitely the highest rating an album with Mike Patton is going to get
Jimi Hendrix
3/5
I think its quite good and the best Jimi album
But part of me wonders, is it just that im supposed to like this, rather than actually thinking its amazing
I like the guitar playing. Castles is great. Its good
Isaac Hayes
3/5
Very very strange that this album makes the list and Saturday Night Fever does not
Fine
3
Primal Scream
3/5
Its perfectly fine, enjoyable, some good songs
But there is no excuse for this length of album at all. The 90s are wild for this. Max 50 mins is all that's needed.
Adele
3/5
While still being a 3, this is by far her best album, way more upbeat, better pop songs, songs like Water Under the Bridge are bouncy pop, better than constant ballads
Unfortunately it does lose momentum when we go back to the ballads
The Prodigy
2/5
Sooooo fucking long. Eugh
Weather Report
3/5
All the jazz on this list, regardless of quality, has tended to be super depressing. This isn't. Sounds like the soundtrack to an 80s movie ive never seen
Cover art is funny
Jerry Lee Lewis
1/5
If this is a reflection of the albums to come, its fair to say ive already done all the classics and I'm left with the dregs.
Its live, its boring, I don't have time to listen to this garbage, but I did
Waste of time
Dr. John
3/5
The last song takes it from a 2 to a 3
Still a bit disappointed that this is where we are now. I need greatness, not okayness
Id stick this on again if someone asked for it, otherwise, probably not
Todd Rundgren
4/5
If you are gonna be experimental, make it good, todd made it good
Just One Victory is very decent
Blood, Sweat & Tears
2/5
I dunno man. I don't know.
Decent. But. I have to hear this before i die? Im not sure i do?
Fine
Blues p2 absolutely sucks, waste of time and takes away the positives.
Insipid
Ute Lemper
2/5
Its like fine, bit long, slightly dull at times
I dont see how this merits a place on the list
Sounds like a musical. Fine but what are we doing here
You Were Meant For Me is good but the song after sucks and it lasts 10 mins
My fear that I'd run out of the classics seems to be accurate
Leonard Cohen
2/5
As unremarkable as youd assume
Does what it says on the tin, does it to an average level. Its short so that's a positive. Nothing really sticks out.
Morrissey
3/5
The 90s English bands influence is clear in this one. Sounds so unlike the smiths
Not as good as Viva hate
But pretty good
Miles Davis
2/5
I win nothing for sitting through this. I dont gain anything for pretending this is brilliant
What can I say? It's long? Because it lasts for fucking ever. Its dull? A bit yeah. Its not that interesting? Probably
It is what it is. Not my thing. Not evil or harmful, but I will never ever ever listen to this again
Ravi Shankar
1/5
We are truly in the dregs
Fuck this.
I'd rather not be in the same room as my phone when its playing this
Why am I getting instructions? Is this the 50s version of skits?
Artistically impressive, but awful to listen to
The Rolling Stones
4/5
Okay, more like it
The big negative is far too much of this is country. Like a mad amount. Like 30 mins of 42 are country.
But then it has 3 songs that are absolutely insanely good, the opener being Gimmie Shelter, the closer being You Can't Always Get What you Want and then also Monkey Man. If more of the songs were like this its easy 5 stars.
G. Love & Special Sauce
2/5
How is this on this list.?
I feel like the 90s are more than covered already, but my fear is that there is more and more irrelevant ones coming. Albums that came, had zero impact and left.
Its fine
Incredibly long, far too long.
The Auteurs
3/5
Very pleasant, I don't know if it will leave a big mark on me, its fairly standard, but a decent standard
Slade
3/5
Yeah not bad
For the 12 bar blues, which i hate, its listenable, enjoyable to a certain extent, short, good
Alexander 'Skip' Spence
1/5
I didnt like this
Its okay, but i just didnt enjoy it at all.
Derek & The Dominos
3/5
Bell Borrom Blues is incredible
Layla is incredible
Everything else is decent But its way too long and the singer is a prick
Abdullah Ibrahim
1/5
No notes...
Not because its good
Because its another album that isn't interesting in any way whatsoever
JAY Z
5/5
A classic
So many good songs
A bit long
But the second greater hip hop album ever
Earth, Wind & Fire
3/5
Very good
Nearly a 4, but it sorta drifts off towards the end. Good but not spectacular
Daft Punk
3/5
Hmmmm
I dont want to be controversial on this one, id generally say I like Daft, although I rarely listen, but thr start of this record is quite repetitive, a little dull.
Im not gonna get any cool points for this, im tempted to say 2, but its so iconic that I'll probably stretch to a 3
The Undertones
4/5
Really good
Good singles
Fast
Upbeat
Short
Really good
Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan
2/5
90 mins?
Come on man. 90 fucking mins
I'd rather listen to the audio of stoke vs west brom
It was alright to be fair
Nightmares On Wax
3/5
Lovely lovely background music
Not sure the cover or the title reflects the music inside
Far far too long, but good
Gram Parsons
2/5
I find this both good and bad
Like some, dislike other bits
Santana
3/5
Some good tunes on here
Beatles
4/5
Classic
Not on the level of the other beatles records on the list, but still very very good
First 3 tracks are outstanding
American Music Club
3/5
Perfectly pleasant. Bit basic but fine
a-ha
5/5
This is bloody brilliant
The singles are classics and the album tracks are better in many cases.
The closer is ridiculously good
I could list every single song but I'll just say Living A Boys Adventure Tale is superb
No notes
5
Nirvana
3/5
Usually not big on live albums, but this is an exception. Its good and all but the main point of note is Where Did You Sleep Last Night. Best nirvana piece of music.
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
While this is pretty good, it's just wasn't in the mood for it. Just sounded a bit like a wall of noise.
Good, just not good today
Sparks
5/5
I think sparks are the ultimate "i need to be in the mood for this" type group.
In my head, Angst is the album is enjoy the most, but i think Kimono is likely better overall. Everything on it is good, but Falling In Love With Myself Again is not only the best song on the album, its probably one of the best songs in their catalogue
The voice can be grating at times, but its also the thing that makes everything more instant and different that other stuff.
I am probably gonna go full 5
New Order
4/5
There's no band in the world that sound more like themselves than new order.
The effects on the guitar and bass are so good and so them.
Its good. Not sure its as good as the other new order album on the list but its grrrrreat
Charles Mingus
2/5
As I would probably have guessed, this does nothing for me. Its fine, but a second listen would do nothing for my life, I wouldn't gain a thing
The Byrds
3/5
Very very meat and potato. Decent But not the sort of thing that would blow you away.
Wild Mountain Thyme is a wonderful wonderful cover. Hey Joe not so much
XTC
3/5
This one is pretty good. Its a bit of a mess, but mostly that is a good thing
I thiiiiiiiink i prefer apples. How do you like them apples?
Hookworms
4/5
The album sounds "cool"
Great opener. Really great opener. Negative spaces is so in your face, doesn't let up, great tempo
Ullswater is the next song of note. Really like the vocals on this one. Builds really well
Everything links together well
Must revisit
Belle & Sebastian
3/5
Pleasant if not... slightly bland. No real bite, but nice enough
Like Dylan in the Movies is such a nice little bop
The Psychedelic Furs
3/5
Really nice aggressive tone across this record. For 1980 it sounds way ahead of its time
Good
Neil Young
5/5
The best neil young album
Short, sweet, bittersweet, to the point.
Only Love Can Break Your Heart, possibly his best song.
Southern Man is up there.
Everything else is very very good.
The Pharcyde
4/5
More melodically satisfying than most of its contemporaries
Musically top
Lyrically not my thing
But the whole thing is excellent
4
David Bowie
4/5
Oh! You Pretty Things might be one of his best tracks.
Changes is a classic, as is Life on Mars
Echo And The Bunnymen
3/5
Very decent
Dire Straits
5/5
So Far Away is great
All the singles are great. Everything is good.
Some of lyrics haven't aged the best. But everything is really good.
I got it and I get it
Its a classic
Big Brother & The Holding Company
2/5
I listened, and I deserve credit for it
As this is shite
Scritti Politti
4/5
I dont know how this makes this list, but God damn im glad it did.
Perfect pop
Absolutely delicious
Fun, good, funky, poppy, great
Green Day
5/5
So many good songs
Of the genre, its the classic.
Personal favourite is Sassafras Roots, always been one of my favourite greeenday songs.
In the end has a really great chorus
FOD is great. Should close the album and get rid of All By Myself
The xx
4/5
This albums probably doesnt get the praise it deserves because of how omnipresent Intro is, but the rest of the album is great
Good riffs, good melodies
k.d. lang
2/5
I was quite harsh on the other Lang album on the list.
I guess it comes back to the aged old question, why does this artist need 2 albums on this list when others dont get one?
This one is fine. Perhaps a little bland. Picks up towards the end.
High 2?
Kraftwerk
4/5
If you are reading this review to find some new insight on this album, unlucky lad.
Basically is great, a classic, wonderful, inspirational, influential
Gillian Welch
3/5
I thought it was gonna hate this
But its decent
Far far too long, but decent
Ash
4/5
Really good
Really strong
Better than i thought it would be
All good
Miriam Makeba
2/5
Better than i thought it would be
Okay
Covers and all fine
2
Morrissey
3/5
Of all the morrissey albums, including ones with the smiths, this is by far the least interesting.
I think its good, its fine, but its just something that doesnt need to be by morrisey, it could be by anyone
Fine but very very unremarkable
Donald Fagen
4/5
First thought.. this name seems familiar
10 seconds in... Steely Dan
And thats a positive because this is great
The Police
3/5
This was slightly disappointing. Maybe I dont like this artist as much as I thought i would.
The song mother is maybe one of the worst songs ive had to sit through. The rest has good moments and okay moments, but that song is one id take away from the record
Im going 3.
Elvis Presley
3/5
Absolutely fine
Missing burning love. Would be better with burning love
Marty Robbins
2/5
Fine, nice voice, but i won't gain anything from ever hearing this again
George Michael
4/5
Superb pop album, perhaps a little long, but good.
It isn't as good as listen without prejudice, but it isnt super far off. LwP is probably a little more gritty, but this one is polished. Good singles, good album tracks. Good
Fatboy Slim
3/5
Does what it says on the tin.
Not bad, not life changing. Decent, standard, good background noise
Decent 3
Elliott Smith
5/5
This is so so so good.
Every song is at least great, and a handful are even better.
Can't Make a Sound, Junk Bond Trader, Everything Means Nothing To Me, Happiness, I could literally say anything
The backing vocals are so good. They adorn the lead vocals so well.
Fun Lovin' Criminals
2/5
This feels like someone trying to be cool as hard as possible. You are forcing it hughie.
Supergrass
3/5
A lot faster and heavier than I expected. Its not death metal or anything like that, but it has a bit of a kick to it
Its better than a 3 but not as good as a 4
My Bloody Valentine
3/5
Lush soundscapes, wonderfully beautiful. I wish I could have listened to it a bit more. 3 listens just wasnt enough
3 is probably harsh
3/5
Saw the length and dreaded it, but put it on and it is pretty good
Chilled out vibes, nice soundscapes, relaxing. Good
Beyoncé
3/5
Far far too long
Not as good as solange
But pretty good
Blow is funky, good tune
Circle Jerks
4/5
Whiplash from Beyonce to this.
But this is great. Short and sweet. So short and so sweet.
Beverly Hills the standout. World up My Ass and I gotta think fast. Great.
Aggressive fun great.
4
Bee Gees
5/5
I love this record. I actually love it.
Black Diamond is superb. That chorus is so good.
Lamplight is the best song. Incredible.
First of May is superb, a classic.
Its probably too long, but i am gonna be hypocritical, because I like it.
Germs
3/5
Good. Enjoyable. Fast, passionate, good.
Led Zeppelin
3/5
I must have been a bad bad boy who needs to wash his mouth out with soap to get an album this lenght for an artist I dont particularly like
Is the issue that as a band they are "just okay"?
Is the music hurt by how amazing their rep is?
This is perfectly fine, but incredibly long
In The Light is good
About 3/4s through i was quite enjoying it, but then boogie with stu came on and I thought, this fucking sucks
Kate Bush
4/5
Kate Bush is incredible so its going to be a 4 minimum.
Maybe not quite the level of the other two, but fantastic. The vibes are incredible on this album. All the instrumentation is so good
Melodically top
The Lemonheads
3/5
Short and punchy
It sounds a bit like transition songs on Dawsons Creek or Gilmore Girls, and I don't think thats a criticism.
I wish there was a little nuisance on the ratings as I think its bang on between a 3 and a 4, maybe even a 7.5/10.
Wilco
3/5
It would be easy to say its too long, but its a double album lad.
At times its beautiful.
Throbbing Gristle
1/5
One of the worst things ive ever heard in my life
Steely Dan
5/5
Night by Night, wow. Brilliant
Rikki, Major Dude. Wow. Solo in Rikki is superb.
Have we found the second best Dan album?? I think we have
While Aja is a beast that would be impossible to beat, this is very very top.
Patti Smith
4/5
It just sounds like a classic albums
Opener is superb
The instrumentation is great
Jazmine Sullivan
3/5
Way better than I thought it would be
I dont want to be like, its just a 3, because the 3s get lost a little. Its a very very high 3
Happy Mondays
4/5
The second half of this album is exceptional
Harmony is outstanding, Bob's Your Uncle is so good.
Finley Quaye
3/5
When you see "scottish album," there is an sound i assumed. I was wrong, but this is another biazzare choice
Bob Marley song sample is very fun
R.E.M.
4/5
Really great
Rough and ready
Radio free Europe/complaint free album
4
Jamiroquai
4/5
Very very good
A little long but good
Funky funky, pretty funky
Lloyd Cole And The Commotions
3/5
Its good, jangly, maybe slightly uninteresting. Needs a bit more grit or something
Title track is good
Koffi Olomide
3/5
Delightful, but about 18 mins too long. Good but 58 mins for this kinda thing is insane. Cut the second song and the last song and you got a stew going
Johnny Cash
3/5
A mixture of beauty and sometimes sounded like an old man singing karaoke. Which i guess is what it is
Calexico
3/5
Good, better than i thought it would be
