Mewgenics

I can't adequately put into words how unsuitable this is for this list and this project. An hour and thirty eight minutes. Of a video game soundtrack. Just no. I've just checked. Looking at the submittor's other suggestion explains an awful lot.

Mewgenics is a game soundtrack. The game is a "tactical role-playing roguelike life simulation video" game about cat breeding. For that reason the lyrics are all references to cats and get rather annoying after a while as does the sheer length of this album. The music is a cabaret like jazz pop. Some songs like "Them Kitty Bones" are amusing and the danse macabre adaptation "We're Dead" featuring Tanya Donelly (of Throwing Muses) is nice.

Adding a hour and a half video game OST only 6 months after its release is certainly a choice. The music here is well executed without a doubt, but the add misses the entire point of the 1001. There’s very little chance this incredibly niche album will have any impact in the future - hell, the game is years away from qualifying for cult status or being seen as more than a flash in the pan. User picks should reflect absolute must-listens before you die, potential classics with staying power or artists who deserve to be highlighted. This trend of throwing whatever album you liked from the past few months on here is annoying and makes me worry about people’s attention spans.

Okay, now that I've stepped down from my high horse, I do agree with the sentiment that the Mewgenics soundtrack isn't a suitable album for any list like this, for a few reasons, though the primary one is just that soundtracks have more to prove to justify their inclusion, which was a complaint I had with Dimery's list. The only two other game soundtracks I see are Katamari Damacy, and Silent Hill 2, both of which merit their inclusion, unfortunately Mewgenics does not meet that criteria. However that isn't to say that there's no musical value in this album, quite the opposite in fact. Mewgenics, from what I can tell online, is an indie turn-based based post-apocolyptic game about cat breeding. A very strange concept for a game, but unimportant to the quality of the album, which is actually pretty damn impressive. Mewgenics has a pretty long runtime of an hour 38 minutes, most of which is either vocal jazz or jazz pop and is about either cat related topics or about death/spooky topics (dead cats, zombies, skeletons) complete with haunted house-esque music for those songs. In terms of genre it floats around a bit, there's a fair amount of country, rock, and rockabilly but it seems to be trying to stay consistent within a American 50s to early-mid 60s theme so any genre you can think of that was big around that time probably plays some role in this album. A large amount of the jazz songs also have kind of a spy movie theme to them, which is interesting I guess. As alluded to earlier, I actually think these songs are extremely well done for the most part, this album clearly isn't a joke suggestion. Lyrically they take a more humorous tone, it's not an album to take with much seriousness, but I think the good musicianship, with the genre hopping and the comedic tone of the lyrics contributes to a fun experience. I've listened to this album twice now, and despite being over an hour and a half long, neither time have I felt the album dragging. This does lead me onto the biggest negative, and unfortunately it's killer: The album doesnt feel like a standalone experience. Having not played the game it feels like I'm missing important context to a lot of this album, and it feels like something for fans of the game (which makes total sense, it's an accompaniment piece to the main course) rather than casual listeners like I, which immediately makes it ineligible for any list in my opinion. To its credit some songs do try to mitigate this. There's a series a songs about a big bad character (e.g. Crystalline Dreams being a spider, Throbbing King being about some kind of despot) which I'm going to assume are boss characters, and the lyrics give some background into these characters and as a result the lack of context isn't as bad as it could be, but it's still disqualifying. Also it came out this year. Props to having the most recent album on the board, but it's far too early to suggest anything that's been out for under 8 months is worthy of being here The last song is a parody of the Monster Mash for some reason. Also one of the songs was a jazzy rendition of the danse macabre with lyrics about zombies, which I found to be delightfully amusing. Look, I went into this being aware of this edgelord game and its fanbase, but I tried not to let that affect me. Having said that, this whole album is just a long (loooooooong) and boring list of cabaret songs about cats. Pass.

The Mewgenics OST is a very creative and varied soundtrack full of dangerously catchy earworms by Ridiculon (the knowers might recognize Matthias Bossi and Carla Kihlstedt of Sleepytime Gorilla Museum). Almost 2 hours of all this for an indie game about cats having sex is a crazy achievement that I think will indeed be talked about for many years, and will eventually be considered part of the video game soundtrack canon alongside soundtracks like Silent Hill 2 and Minecraft. That being said, of course, 100 minutes of songs about cats shitting and pissing with (intentionally) childish lyrics isn't going to be for everyone and the very low user score is to be expected, but I do see the vision, submitter. In simplest terms, album's fun, I enjoyed it. Alien crater, feline invader. Bump the score up a bit. 4/5 from me.

I don’t know why people hate this with such fervor. It’s not a bad album at all. It’s, in fact, a fantastic video game soundtrack. The songs are very well written and clearly thoughtfully crafted. The vocals, instrumentation, and production are all good, though they can feel a little flat. I don’t typically like long albums, but soundtrack albums, especially video game soundtracks, are a sort of exception. I don’t have too many issues with this. It’d be fuckin weird if there wasn’t a game attached to it, but there is, so stop your fucking belly aching and appreciate this album for what it is. Some good clean wholesome fun. As with film soundtracks and musicals I think submitters may underestimate how much their regard is contingent on their nostalgia for a whole experience that the rest of us aren't actually getting. As a standalone album I don't find this holds up, and its length is egregious. It is a little too competently constructed for me to consign it to a true crap tier (on the back of such obtuse considerations have my ratings become a sea of mealy-mouthed 3 stars), but, you know. Cat burlesque that is not as clever as it thinks it is, referring to some vague narrative I'll never experience and have no wish to, my years of having the wherewithal to invest large amounts of time into videogames being well in the rear-view mirror. Though I did finish Time Fcuk on Newgrounds back in the day.

This is the second video game soundtrack of this list. Quite unique as a game soundtrack for the type of music it contains. It was not bad (although very long) and in fact I will go buy the, successful, game and play it as it seems fun.

I was going to make a snide one word review for this entry at first, but it got me thinking more. Ridiculon is band that was contributed soundtracks to a fair few games, many by Edmund McMillen (such as this one). Ridiculon consists if musicians Jon Evans and Matthias Bossi, the latter of whom along with collaborator Carla Kihlstedt are also members or avant-metal cornerstone Sleepytime Gorilla Museum. I guess all of this is to say that any of the connected projects could have been a more appropriate choice than this 100-minute long soundtrack. I am however biased since I like their music.

Kind of a bizarre listen, sounds like maybe a game I should play before I die and the music in that context would probably be a lot better. Out of context not something I'm inclined to want to listen to all the way through.

I’m so sorry, but an hour-and-a-half video game soundtrack that came out earlier this year? I hate to be a party pooper, but I’m skeptical that this will be worth my time to listen to. Granted, Mouth Sounds, submitted by the same user, was an absolute blast in my opinion, so maybe I’m in for a surprise. Unfortunately, I was not in for a surprise with this album. This felt like a novelty album, minus the fun. Video game soundtracks can be wonderful (I love Aquatic Ambience and Stickerbush Symphony from the Donkey Kong Country games on Super Nintendo), but I feel like they require some context in order to be enjoyed. I don’t really play any modern games, and I’ve never heard of this game before, so this was just an hour and a half of weird songs about zombie cats. Also, is this what you listen to while you play this game? I can’t imagine playing a video game while this stuff plays in the background. I have to look into this further, because I just can’t believe this is actually meshed in with the game play. There really wasn’t anything good about this music to me, and I’m pretty miffed that I spent 90 minutes listening to this.
