Hard to set aside the edgy beginner guitar lesson associations and hear in its context. Ultimately, beyond some pretty catchy guitar on the big hits it’s not a brilliant listen. Appreciate its simplicity and do think White’s character is fun but ultimately didn’t really enjoy listening. Maybe in a different mood. Feel like the good tracks have enough in them to fill a car advert and the other tracks are just kind of odd.
Love this album and have done since it came out. Listening back it is noticeably an infant version of gorillaz sound with tracks like Punk having more in common with Blur than gorillaz later stuff. Interesting to listen alongside tracks like Tender on Blur’s 1999 “13” (two years earlier) to hear the transition between the two groups. Tender could easily sit on this album and fit in as much as it does on the Blur album.
I like Damon’s locals on this album, they’re really sad and childlike. I hope other Gorillaz albums make it into the book as I def don’t think this is there best. But still a fave. First edition of this book came out in 2005 so some of gorillaz best stuff might not make it.
This album has some really danceable tracks that are just good fun, ultimately I love gorillaz for the sense of weird fantasy storytelling which I don’t think is present on this album as much. So still a 5.
Top track: probably tomorrow comes today. I also love Man Research.
It’s a good album of pretty top tier pop songs. Very catchy. Can’t really fault it as a pop album, but isn’t necessarily the most interesting.
Tracks like Feelin really have a very mersey beat/Beatles sound. Which must have been kind of odd in 1990.
Good album with some bops. Never listened before. Can’t say many of the lyrics speak to me. Not a fan of all the pussy splitting references espesh on Dirty Mack, bit gross. The stuff about Rodney King and LA riots was interesting and best of the album.
About halfway through I was like, there isn’t as much crowd work as the others said. And then it started.
The music is great. But yeah a little bit too much yelping and screaming
I mean it’s the Beatles, bit difficult to separate from their prestige or whatever. Tomorrow never knows is a fucking insane track. Must have fucking blown peoples minds in ‘66 and wouldn’t have Tame Impala and their colleagues without this song probably. This album does still have a lot of their earlier kinda jingle jangle stuff which isn’t my favourite of their sounds. I think it’s probably a 3 as an album, because while some tracks like Tomorrow Never Knows are proper headphone lie on the carpet listens, I can’t see myself ever saying I want to sit down and listen through this album.
Think I’m in a bad mood today cause I really just ain’t feeling funky. I don’t think I’m the funkiest funker at the best of times
Apart from it being a bit creepy when they cheer everytime he talks about killing, spitting at, or hurting someone…this album is quite interesting. It’s almost storybook, or like a play, you can really picture the performance and are transported. The music is toe tapping. Think I would have little interest if it wasn’t a live album.
Yeah I wouldn’t even really listen to this at Christmas
Don’t think I’ve ever sound down and listened through this whole album. Also don’t think I will again. Don’t get me wrong, love the clash and love the big hits on this album. But that’s enough for me really.
So dramatic and over the top but I fuckin loved it lol. Definite repeat listen especially for working
Sorry but definitely says “yeah yeah yeah yeah” too many times for me. But it’s decent. Probably won’t ever listen again though.
Not a fan of any music that forces me to picture a nude Jay-Z
I thought I would enjoy this because I thought I liked the stranglers. Turns out I had not really listened to the lyrics as a kid. Pretty gross throughout. Keep the bassist and guitarist. Replace everything else and it would be a good album.
Very slutty, but also maybe not that good. Sex dwarf is hilarious. Tainted love good. But overall probably just not that great
I think that maybe I should like this more than I do. It’s similar to Devendra Barnhart who I have liked. I find the Tijuana one quite funny because he’s from Paris, what does he know about sex and drugs in Tijuana.
Watched too much futurama growing up to not like Beastie Boys. It is good shit. Continuing in trend of rating white boy rap though :/
I liked it. Had a very dramatic storybookish nature to it. Very showy
Liked this a lot more than the other PJ album on here. Was a lot more raw and fun
Decent Sunday morning coffee music. Can’t imagine I will crave a re-listen
Yeah pretty good. Not mad about it
Pure 90s. Like smashing pumpkins but a lot more danceable. Really quite liked it.
Yucky Americans. Really couldn’t tolerate it.
Yes, it’s good. Yeah I do like it. It can be a bit too proggy at times but still good. The sound mixing on perpetual change is insanely bad
I can’t really imagine why I list of the top 1001 albums would need this alongside other punk albums to be honest
Got me feeling like a fruity little dance floor baby first thing in the morning. Loved this ‘bum
Not really a fan. The unchained melody cover was particularly trite. Uphill battle to like country music anyway. But yeah, just not the one
Loved this album growing up. The lyrics are beautiful and have such a flowy melody, Garvey’s voice is lovely, and the music swells to dramatic peaks and soothing valleys throughout. It’s also just pretty strong throughout. A classic of our lifetimes. First track alone earns the 5 stars.
Yeeee liked it, would be good to study to or do chores or exercise. But a lot of it kinda blended together.
Yeah was good. Listened ages ago now so can’t remember much but is steely Dan so ye
Evocative. Somber. Romantic. Miserable. Two stars. Goes to show how many songs about different body parts of a woman you can write. Probably won’t listen again. And definitely not the whole album.
Questionable. Dumb. Sort of fun at points. But felt like a very long album of similar stuff.
Yeah pretty beautiful stuff. RIP. We Stan
Silky vocals. Nice songs. Starts strong and tails off a little.
I’m not sure I really get it with PJ. On first listen I feel like the best tracks were not much more than Patti Smith covers and the rest was fairly dull
Interesting album and some really cool music. Often dips into being a little to sonically “Interesting” to be enjoyable and can just feel like a bit of a an assault on the ol ears and brain. I was asked to turn it off as it was stressing out my housemate
Punk killed rock n roll to leave us with this?
A little goblin boy let loose in the studio. Didn’t understand a word he said.
I feel like in the perfect mood this could peak at three stars but I was pretty fuckin sick of it by track three.
Always thought ac dc were kinda dumb. Still do. But this was quite fun actually.
Pretty brilliant really. Nice stinky stonky music and no weird Zappa-risms/questionable lyrics.
Particularly like the track where he sings about Ribena. Feel like it doesn’t get sung about enough. Jokes aside this is the highlight of the album and comes quite early. I think I prefer Fugazi as a best of artist, there albums tend to drone through between highlights
I like Fugazi. Good tracks on here but none of my faves really.
Would listen again.
Think I’ll just listen to Leonard cohen.
Some cool drumming on the later tracks but is not very enjoyable to listen to
Yeah Joni Mitchell is quite nice. Wasn’t fully in the mood and spoiled some what by YouTube ads.
I don’t do country. Too American. I’ll listen to their country shit when they learn to morris dance
Hadnt noticed before that pulp sound a fair bit like echo and the bunny men. I liked it but was also trying to get work done and this is terrible music for working to.
