1001 Albums Summary

This feels like the missing link for everyone who cites The Velvet Underground as the indie rock progenitors. Straight line from them to Pavement to Kurt Vile.

Not my cup of tea, but I think I get it. Never realized how much of this album I'd already heard.

Simply the best. This is what all big bands should aspire to sound like. So tight, so brash at times, gentle at others. Lil darlin might be the perfect closer.

Pyramids....my goodness.

Putting the personal life stuff aside for a minute.... While short, this album's ridiculous. The band is loud and brash and yet somehow simultaneously extremely tight. Another review labeled it as proto-proto-punk and that's pretty much it right there. But then you realize that Little Richard existed and did it better.

I get the sense of why this was important and is on the list, but this one just isn't my cup of tea.

Want to like this more than I do.

Hasn't aged well, but gets an extra star for being such a trailblazer and trendsetter. More important than it is actually good.

I'm no stranger to art for art's sake, and as someone who appreciates post-modern classical and avant garde jazz, the difficulty of this album shouldn't be too off-putting for me. The problem is, I'm just not sure the Art is actually there. Much of the post-modern classical revolution was about challenging the rules and expectations of the prior history of theory and technique. Were they doing that with this album or were they just too fucking high? I simultaneously feel like I need more time with the album to digest and think, but also really don't want to subject myself to more of this. My brain says this might be genius and important; my gut says it's utter garbage.

It only gets a second star cause people liked it I guess
