Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple

Personally thought this album was awful. Having known Fiona from the great song ‘Across the Universe’ I was expecting much much more. The entire album feels like a collection of C-sides, let alone B-sides, written by a moody teenager who thinks open mic nights are the be-all and end-all. Lots of grating repetition of words and phrases, with many random analogies thrown in. First album in years where I had to keep checking how many songs were left until it was over. 1/5.

Sincere by Mj Cole

very very mediocre, if not downright unmemorable. As a lifelong fan of electronic, and a recent covert of intelligent/ambient DnB / garage, I was expecting a lot from this album, else why would it be listed on the 1001 albums... Not worth a listen honestly, very generic. 1.5/5.

Head Hunters by Herbie Hancock
Nov 02 2023

Interesting listen. 70s jazz, combining light notes of electronica/funk. Watermelon is instantly recognisable for its ‘whistling motif’ that repeats throughout the song. Parts of the album feel very drawn out and repetitive, bit too harsh in ears during a 3 minute repetitive jazz beat. 3.5 or so?

Nov 03 2023

Very solid late 80s rap, similar to Wu-Tang/ A Tribe Called Quest. Personally found it slightly more shallow than offerings from other rap collectives of a similar era, roughly 3.8/5.

The Stooges by The Stooges
Nov 04 2023

Great album, never realised significance of the band (and that it was Iggy Pop’s band). Felt very Rolling Stones etc. Whole album start to finish flows very well, will be added into playlist rotation. 4.2/5.

Play by Moby
Nov 05 2023

Knew from trip-hop/electronic - mildly disappointed with album as a whole when compared to the two standout tracks of porcelain and everloving. Decent background music but nothing more, especially when compared to other artists of the same era/genre. 3.

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Nov 06 2023

Easy listening rock. Too easy for my taste, felt at times it crossed too far into country/similar vibes, no particular tracks that grabbed me, 2.5/5.

It's Blitz! by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Nov 07 2023

Decent, known for a while for Heads Will roll, some surprising softer sung songs, pleasant to listen to in the background. However feel that not many songs caught my attention. 3/5.

Leftism by Leftfield
Nov 08 2023

Classic house, already had 3 tracks in rotation, however feel the three were definitely highlights, rest of the album acted as more filler. 3/5.

Ragged Glory by Neil Young & Crazy Horse
Nov 09 2023

As a fan of Crosby, stills, Nash and young I was expecting a better album, no song in particular jumped out to me, probably wouldn’t listen again, but can appreciate in itself it is not a bad album, just not to my taste. 2/5.

Buena Vista Social Club by Buena Vista Social Club
Nov 10 2023

Funky album, two songs added to playlist, however rest didn’t catch attention, decent for background/lounge music however. But probably wouldn’t listen to the whole album again. 3/5.

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
Nov 11 2023

Great album, classic rock, multiple songs added to rotation. However don’t think it reaches the heights of their self titled album. 4/5.

Psychocandy by The Jesus And Mary Chain
Nov 12 2023

Very new wave/punky, felt very screechy at times, not many songs in particular stood out to me, but good vibe in general, 3/5.

Nov 13 2023

Beginnings of alt rock, however comparatively to what comes later in one of my favourite genres, the album is very ‘soft’ with songs such as everybody hurts. Not bad, just again, not many stand out songs. 3/5.

Nov 14 2023

Instant classic, incredible album, have already listened to before, but never tires. Staple of Britpop, unbeaten? Maybe only by Blur… 5/5.

Sheet Music by 10cc
Nov 15 2023

Almost felt like a parody rock album/ many comedic or self representory lines. Not bad in the background but lyrics felt weird to listen to properly. 2.3/5.

The Visitors by ABBA
Nov 16 2023

Never given ABBA a full listen, surprised none of their ‘main’ hits are from this album, however none really stood out to me, most likely wouldn’t listen again. 2.5/5.

Fetch The Bolt Cutters by Fiona Apple
Nov 17 2023

Personally thought this album was awful. Having known Fiona from the great song ‘Across the Universe’ I was expecting much much more. The entire album feels like a collection of C-sides, let alone B-sides, written by a moody teenager who thinks open mic nights are the be-all and end-all. Lots of grating repetition of words and phrases, with many random analogies thrown in. First album in years where I had to keep checking how many songs were left until it was over. 1/5.

Moon Safari by Air
Nov 18 2023

Incredible album - Been a favourite for years. Combining electronica/trip-hop. Many memorable and interesting songs. Would’ve rated 5/5, but in retrospect there are some slightly ‘duller moments’ in the middle of the album. Albums from massive attack/portishead just beat out. 4.2/5.

Hot Buttered Soul by Isaac Hayes
Nov 19 2023

Fun album. As a massive fan of Portishead, was a good surprise to hear the first song ‘Walk on by’ as the basis for roughly 3/4 Portishead songs. Great first song, however rest of the album failed to capture my attention in the same way. 3/5.

Definitely Maybe by Oasis
Nov 20 2023

Not much to say other than a certified classic. Deluxe edition especially with all remastered / live and alt versions. Could listen to on repeat. 4.5/5.

Ten by Pearl Jam
Nov 21 2023

Instant classic. One of my favourite albums by my favourite bands. Classic 90s alt-rock. Every track stands out, Eddie Vedder’s voice is distinct and their riffs clean and sharp. 5/5.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
Nov 22 2023

Nice soul/funk album for background listening, but that’s all. Nothing really jumped out for me. Suppose not my genre. 2/5.

Off The Wall by Michael Jackson
Nov 23 2023

Although personally not a fan of Michael Jackson, I can appreciate this album packed with hits. Classic for MJ, personally something I wouldn’t spend time listening to, but can say a 3/5 for me.

Highway 61 Revisited by Bob Dylan
Nov 24 2023

Very lyrical, almost shanty like or a retelling of a myth. Couple songs caught my attention, but some of the songs that leant harder on the harmonica started to grate on me. Overall 3.5/5.

Sincere by Mj Cole
Nov 26 2023

very very mediocre, if not downright unmemorable. As a lifelong fan of electronic, and a recent covert of intelligent/ambient DnB / garage, I was expecting a lot from this album, else why would it be listed on the 1001 albums... Not worth a listen honestly, very generic. 1.5/5.

Punishing Kiss by Ute Lemper
Nov 27 2023

From the album description, I was expecting a sort of Femme fatale / trip-hop portishead vibe. That unfortunately was very far from the case. Felt very informal and chatty, boring and not very thought through, 2/5.

Live And Dangerous by Thin Lizzy
Nov 28 2023

Other than ‘The boys are back in town’ not many inspired songs on this ‘live album’. I use that term loosely as it was pointed out that this live recording had been dubbed and changed repeatedly from its OG performance. 2/5.

To Pimp A Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar
Nov 29 2023

Very solid album, used to listen to this regularly when younger. Relistening now, still holds up, however some of the ad libs and ‘skits’ on the album I feel do detract from the flow, making me want to skip ahead in tracks to get back to the music. 4/5.

Elastica by Elastica
Nov 30 2023

Surprised I’ve never heard of them prior, very solid punk/alt rock Brit pop. Lots of great songs, added to playlists etc… 4/5 as the middle of the album was less memorable compared to the key start and final songs.

The Nightfly by Donald Fagen
Dec 01 2023

Felt very generic, in less than 24 hours I’d forgotten that I had listened to it. Slightly jazzy, but nothing special. 2/5.

The Modern Dance by Pere Ubu
Dec 03 2023

Disappointed honestly, felt like a collection of noises and annoyances. Genuinely surprised how many of these albums have made it onto this list. 1/5.

Everything Must Go by Manic Street Preachers
Dec 04 2023

Surprised I hadn’t heard of this band. Pretty solid alt rock, added a few songs to playlists, however middle of album felt unmemorable at times. 3.8/5.

Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits
Dec 07 2023

Classic album, full of great hits. 4.2/5

Bookends by Simon & Garfunkel
Dec 09 2023

Regarded by many as a classic album, I can’t deny that it does have some incredible songs that are still played regularly today. Personally added two more songs to my music collection. However feels like the mid section gets a bit ‘rambly’ and unfocused. 3.5/5.
