Nick Drake
Opening was song was great but then it seemed to blend into sameness. Not bad, but more like one long song with different chapters. Lyrically poetic; I could feel his desperation with life. What I found most interesting was the musicians who say they were influenced by Nick Drake. It’s a long and significant list.

Birth Of The Cool
Miles Davis
It’s just not my jam. Over the years I’ve tried to like jazz. I truly have. I understand the teamwork and musicianship to play jazz. It’s tremendously hard and takes great talent and skill. I simply cannot find a place where it works for me. I need something less intrusive for background music. I need something straightforward and upbeat when I’m moving my body. After the first few bars of the first song, my mind started to wander into creativity-much like Miles Davis. Was it the jazz? No. I do that all the time. The jazz got in the way more than it expanded my thoughts. I guess I can’t sit with the cool kids today.

Oasis
I had heard two of the songs that had some airplay time in the past and really liked them. I had heard the name oasis but didn’t connect them to those songs or to anything else. I absolutely loved this album and have added it to my listening tracks. I want to listen again to read the lyrics.

While I appreciate the creative contributions Green Day has given to modern society, it is not something I would ever choose to listen to on my own.

Come Away With Me
Norah Jones
Nora Jones’ music has all the complexities of a beautiful blend of garden herbs. It has all the chord progressions expected in jazz, but carries itself like easy listening pop, with a hint of mellow country. And I love the acoustic based featured throughout. (It’s all about the bass). This album is timeless. It touches the sounds from past centennials and carries forward to the future.

Interesting how an English rock band played so “American”, ie blues, gospel, honky tonk, and country. Why are the songs so good and Jagger’s voice so irritating?

I remember liking them in the 80s. I even bought on of their cds. Not this one though. They weren’t typical of my music collection. I went for edgier. They seemed more cheesy. Listening now I heard their musicality. Somewhat beatle-esque. It was like listening to an old friend.

I think they would have been a band I’d listen to if I were in college a decade later. I like their sound and lyrics. They wouldn’t be my fav but I’d been on the bandwagon.

One of the best all time albums. Paul Simon is a musician’s musician. He’s not afraid to play with sounds and rhythms and incorporate them into his unique lyrics. Yeah. It’s a good album.

1963. Good year to be born. Decidedly, I prefer a great vocalist, curious lyrics, and bongos in that order. Saxophones are sometimes interesting but too much can be grating.

This was fun. The album came out in 1966 and create a discussion with my mom regather music we grew up with in our home when I was little. Mom said she didn’t have this album and it wasn’t really her style. She listed the albums we had in our home from the 60s and I realize that I probably know all the words to those. For this album, I was familiar with the main songs but the whole album. It was cool to hear similar music to the Stones from the same era.

It’s not my style but I found it interesting that each song had an incredibly long intro. The lyrics had meaning as well, but the mutual emphasis was something that we don’t honor here. So the uniqueness (to me) was intriguing. Probably not a long term fan, but I appreciated it as something new and different.

Is there zero stars? Because I want to give zero stars. I looked at the other albums that came out in 1997 just to make sure I was talking through my gray hair. Radiohead. Limpbisket. Blur. Faith No More. The list is even longer. All these bands leaned into distorted music. But it was still music. And I listened to them so I can set aside my “get off my lawn” bias. Also, the title and lyrics of that first song and the denial by the lead noisemaker, saying he meant something entirely different? Come’on. Reminds me of a politician, talking through both sides of their asshole. Zero stars. Zero.

Do I have to? Sigh. More techno. I’m jaded by yesterday’s jackhammer. Here we go. Ohhh. Music? Real music? So. It was ok and it was funny. It was early techno, which meant musicians were playing with new sounds and ideas. It was the grandparents of yesterday’s screaming baby on a plane, once again proving that in every family there is a dumpster fire. What yesterday and day before taught me…save my 1 stars when I need to use a zero star.

Get up and go punk rock from the late 70s, when experimental sounds, discord, and anarchy were musical. I’m beginning to see the birth of so much diversity of later years came from the sounds of the late 70s. Probably won’t listen again, except for the last song. That was fucking funny.

Leonard Cohen
Going in…I love his music when other people sing it. The other side… his lyrics touched me on a much deeper level than they ever had in the past. And while others may have prettier voices, his voice is just right to feel the longing, anger, and sadness. It profoundly altered the way I think of him and his craft. It put into verse some of my deepest feelings.

Untitled (Black Is)
SAULT
This album reminded me of Moby from the 1990s. Somatically similar music and script down lyrics with one theme presented within. The stripped down lyric carries no explanation, leaving us the listener to determine that explanation. The simplistic lyrics create an opportunity to question beliefs about the narratives that I have heard yet will never experience. Musically the beat and underlying steady theme is punctuated by various music styles throughout Africa’s regions and countries, creating a unique listening experience of African sounds. All in all this is the type of album that I want to hear from 1001 generator. I want new music that challenges me and this collection did just that. It is a one and done for me. Chances are I won’t go back to this album and make it part of my repertoire however, it was well worth listening to for deeper understanding of myself and others.

Beck
Beck does not have a place in my music library. I’ve tried over the years. Truly tried-with friends who proclaim him to be the coolest of dudes. I am certain some will disagree when I call out unimaginative guitar licks, redundant background beats, and lyrics unable to reach my soul through my ears. I remember being disappointed when he opened for U2 a few years back. And when I heard him, he did not disappoint my disappointment.
