Honestly this was good I liked it a lot
The instrumentation was to my liking
a bit psychedelic
played with panning a lot
vocal recording style fit
Not very experimental or deep but the core sound was good
I liked a lot of songs; i wanna be adored, she bangs the drum, don't stop, fool's gold, and all sorts of moments in other songs
strong start
feels 80s
long songs, I like that they get to breathe
shakuhachi and Wolof
best tunes: red rain, sledgehammer, big time, we do what we're told
Simple music
nice music
good music
amazing voice
best tunes: hello, river lea, i miss you, lay me down
great instrumentals
great voice
thoughtful reflective lyrics
nice
best tunes: go!, faithful, love is..., chi-city, real people
Honestly surprised by how listenable this is.
sound and recording quality is electric
60s
Janis Joplin, amazing voice
sometimes like marge simpson or axl rose
great album
best tunes: I need a man to love, piece of my heart, ball and chain
simple but nice. enjoyable sound. pleasant. most certainly likeable.
lyrics can be meh. Everything has to rhyme.
Interesting to think that today, artists are getting a lot of flack for the trend of short 2-something minute songs, as well as short albums. However, this beloved Beatles album is almost entirely comprised of 2-something minute songs and the run time is just a bit over 30min.
Best tunes: norwegian wood, you won't see me, in my life. If i needed someone is my favorite.
The poster sound for what I think of when I think of "rock"
This is an album where the best songs are the most popular songs. I don't think there are many gems among the deep cuts. The second half of the album is the better half.
a good sound, but can get a bit monotonous sound and structure wise
best tunes: back in black, you shook me all night long, shake a leg 🇦🇺
Album is interested in sound, and songs are thought out in relation to each other.
I love the classical influences. Sometimes has a musical theatre feel. However, I think its core, most common soundscape is one that doesn't resonate with me. I don't know how to define it, I think there's a reference I'm missing.
There are so many amazing sound moments though. They just don't often build to be consistently amazing songs.
Best tunes: the overtures, sir greendown, tightrope, neon gumbo, mushrooms & roses, wondaland
The first repeat for me. This shows me how much my taste in music has evolved since I first listened to it in 2021. I appreciate this a lot more now than I did then.
If you don't pay attention, the whole album becomes one big blur of noise. When you do pay attention, you realize that there is actually a decent amount of diversity in its sound.
It's not something I crave, but it is nice.
best tunes: only shallow, loomer, i only said, come in alone, blown a wish, when you sleep
Had a slow start but got good
Interesting, often straightforward lyrical style. Sang what he wanted to without worrying if it could fit into a melody syllabically.
I prefer instrumental moments to those with singing.
best tunes: little miss strange, burning of the midnight lamp; rainy day, dream away; 1983... (a merman I should turn to be)
This is the kind of album I started this project for
first jazz album I think I've listened to
a different style of piano than I've listened to before
tracks ending with applause. Recenters the magic of live music, and the magic of a theatre space. Would be interesting to know about how the recording was made.
mostly straight forward songs that are good.
lotsa a 1, a 2, a 1 2 3
not super diverse instrumentation
let's play a game! but don't -
has anyone played sounds of the studio?
best tunes: most of side one, breathless, little red lights
i recognize the beginning of let's get it on, and now i know where it's from
so this is soul
nothing crazy but nothing to dislike. pleasant listening experience
An interesting switch up in album length after some 60-90min long albums
best tunes: if i should die tonight, distant lover, you sure love to ball
I enjoyed this. The songs didn't seem as long as they are.
minimalistic, electronic, spacey instrumentals made the album for me.
Thorn's voice is pleasant.
Melodically lacking a bit, and lyrically not always engaging. But overall, nice.
Best tunes: wrong, the heart remains a child, walking wounded, flipside, big deal
so this is what other people are copying
surreal and lovely, cellos
i can't quite put my finger on it
best tunes: bodysnatchers, nude, all i need, house of cards
My second repeat. I really enjoy the core sound. However, the songwriting feels largely unmemorable and a bit uninspired this time around. good vibe for when you aren't listening too carefully. The hits are hits for a reason, and a couple hidden gems.
Best tunes: one way or another, fade away and radiate, pretty baby, will anything happen, sunday girl, heart of glass
alright y'all, this rocks.
bri'ish.
there is. a game called.... 1 2 X U!
Best tunes: whole album ruled, but expecially strange, reuters, three girl rhumba, 106 beats that, mr. suit, 12 X U
meh. I don't know about this one.
repetitiveness doesn't bother me, simplicity doesn't bother me, but it feels like there's something missing that would make it more compelling.
For sure there are good moments here and there. wish there were more of them given the length.
Best tunes: honey, porcelain, south side, rushing, bodyrock, machete, 7, down slow, inside, my weakness
It is becoming apparent that I like 60s music.
I enjoyed this album. nothing too crazy, just some good tunes and a good sound.
Best tunes: mr. tambourine man, i’ll feel a whole lot better, you won’t have to cry, here without you, i knew i’d want you, it’s no use
A sound I've previously only ever heard imitated.
This was enjoyable and new. A product of very different times, hard but interesting to imagine.
Best tunes: make me know it, the girl of my best friend; dirty, dirty feeling; soldier boy, such a night
back to back Elvis P.
less enjoyable than Elvis is Back!, which I found to be really fun.
more drawn-out and melancholy. soul moments not for me.
in the ghetto is the most unhinged track i've heard from this project so far. wtf?
Best tunes: wearin’ that loved on look, i’m movin’ on, power of my love, gentle on my mind, after loving you, any day now
immaculate, sparkling vibes
Portuguese is such a beautiful language
his voice, her voice, their playing
yes
Best tunes: the girl from ipanema, doralice, para machucar meu coração, desafinado, só danço samba
mm. the sound is fun but a bit unvaried. very long but often low on ideas.
best moments are instrumental rhythmic ones.
best tunes: do you compute, luau, new intro, human interest, sinews (great track)
wonderful fun, good vibes
i love the instrumentals
nice
Best tunes: shining star, happy feelin', africano
not what I was expecting
played with structure and instrumentation
many interesting little details
some crunchy lyrics
overall, enjoyable and fascinating
Best tunes: mr. soul, everydays, hung upside down, sad memory
hmm... interesting
i can sense quality, but it was strangely a bit monotonous
felt a bit too clean and overthought at times
however, second half was much more engaging
Best tunes: glass, at home he's a tourist, 5.45, love like anthrax
unexpectedly good. quite fun
country of a different flavor
fingernails is wild lyrically. interesting perspective.
nice
Best tunes: cornbread moon, because of the wind, boxcars, jericho (your walls must come tumbling down), honky tonkin'
a minnesotan and celebrity witness.
as an album experience, all over the place. however, it felt natural for the songs to be as long as they were, and there were many colorful, whimsical, and interesting sonic and lyrical moments. there were also many off the wall, confusing and bizarre ones as well. mixing sometimes felt botched. as a back to back experience this was not so fulfilling for me, but individual songs and moments were fruitful.
best tunes: sign o' the times, it, slow love, hot thing, adore + random interesting moments throughout
whimsical and unique yet straightforward themes and lyricism.
went into this only knowing bohemian rhapsody. surprisingly, the rest of the album has a similar soundscape (ex. reappearing piano) and whimsy. it was interesting to hear this hit in the album context.
while there are moments i like, and a few solid tunes, i found it harder to sink into this one. not sure why.
Best tunes: you're my best friend, seaside rendezvous, the prophet's song, good company, bohemian rhapsody
Prince round 2.
I don't know... the production on the whole doesn't hold up for me. Having previously gotten "sign o' the times", I think that Prince does kooky significantly better than radio friendly. Some good moments of course. Ever so slightly boring, but zaniness was on the horizon.
Best tunes: computer blue, i would die 4 u, baby i'm a star, purple rain
My all-time favorite album. Changed how I viewed music, opened my eyes to what music could be.
Not a song I don't love.
Byrds round 2.
Melodically this felt more lacking, but overall was sonically sound and interested in sound. Lyrically whimsical and engaging. A fun little ditty of an album.
Best tunes: so you want to be a rock ‘n’ roll star, renaissance fair, mind gardens
Other than the Labyrinth soundtrack, my first David Bowie album.
Many good instrumental moments. Vocals are okay, not stellar, in this context.
It is fine, but I question the need for it to be on this list.
Best Tunes: the stars (are out tonight), love is lost, where are we now?, dancing out in space, heat
2nd time listening to this album.
What to say? it's a good time.
Best tunes: smells like teen spirit, in bloom, come as you are, lithium, stay away
First listened to this in 2021.
Another 60s showing. This is an album that has a sound but explored it. Didn't become samey. Vocals can be meh at times, but instrumentals are dreamy.
Best tunes: break on through (to the other side), soul kitchen, alabama song (whisky bar), light my fire [instrumental jam], end of the night
Black Sabbath.
the album values the instrumental passage as much as the vocal - love it.
There's a kind of cohesion, sonic vision, depthful exploration within a sound that these 60s and early 70s albums have. It makes for a very dreamy listening experience.
rip Ozzy Osbourne, a life of sound.
Best tunes: black sabbath, the wized, n.i.b, evil woman warning
This was better than I'd thought it be.
Sonically singular, but this surprisingly doesn't bother me. Not mad at the delivery. Lyrically not something that clicks with me overall, but definitely has compelling moments.
I don't know what place an album like this would have in my life long term, but it was nice to hear.
Best tunes: avalanche, dress rehearsal rag, diamonds in the mine, famous blue raincoat, joan of arc
Different than expected.
Good quality and fun moments, but overall not really for me. Starting to understand that I'm not into soul.
sunshine (go away today) is amazing though.
Best tunes: that lady, you walk your way, listen to the music, what it comes down to, sunshine (go away today)
Well.
Some genuinely good instrumentals. The country-rap moments actually meshed well and imo better than the rock-rap. However, super juvenile amateur hour lyrics. The lyrics tank it completely. Kinda sounds like a comedy album at points.
"life's a bitch, but I deal with her" lmao
I did like that there was a reprise of an earlier song at the end. The end.
Best tunes: cowboy, devil w/o a cause, wasting time, welcome 2 the party (ode 2 the old school), fist of rage, only god knows why [lol the autotune]
voice and presence, a name you know
stereo the first time, mono the next
don't normally care for soul, but I liked a lot here
a million fade outs, often unsuccessful backup singers
the era before singer-songwriters where albums were largely cover works. these albums feel different.
Lyrics of a time that are sometimes depressing. makes you think.
Best tunes: respect, drown in my own tears, i never loved a man (the way i love you), soul serenade, good times; do right woman, do right man; save me, a change is gonna come
An album with songs on it. Some fun instruments and intriguing instrumental moments. Bland-ish songwriting on the track list, not a fan of the ballad-y songs. Coconut has the magic.
Best tunes: driving along, the moonbeam song, coconut, jump into the fire, i’ll never leave you
This was for me.
Long passages of music, experimental instrumentals
I would buy this
best tunes: who do you love (part 1); when you love, where you love, which do you love, who do you love (part 2), mona, calvary
It's certainly quality. Great production and instrumentals. And it lets me know where an earlier origin point is for this type of sound.
But, idk.... it is kind of bland rock.
Best tunes: where the streets have no name, i still haven’t found what i’m looking for, bullet the blue sky, in god’s country, trip through your wires, one tree hill
Overall soundscape is definitely to my liking, but none of the material is super memorable. Vocals could be better. Idk. I enjoyed my time with it but it's likely a one and done.
Best tunes: round & round (it won’t be long), down by the river, the losing end (when you’re on), cowgirl in the sand
I have a tolerance for this album's musical theatre and classical-ish edges.
Cornball lyrics at times.
Interesting musical ideas and a nice switch up in style for this list. That said, probably not to be revisited in full.
Best tunes: little water song, tango ballad, streets of berlin, split, scope j
dreamy highs and zone-out mids
best tunes: doves in the wind, the weekend, go gina, broken clocks, anything, pretty little birds
I like Christmas music. These are largely not arrangements that speak to me. Sleigh Ride was great, The Ronettes were the most consistent. Parade of the Wooden Soldiers is new to me but fun. I enjoyed how the message at the end was presented sonically.
Best: sleigh ride, winter wonderland, parade of the wooden soldiers, here comes santa claus, silent night
Bland. I like instrumental albums, but this did not explore much.
best tunes: minor chant
