Listened to this a few years ago for the first time and still do time and time again. I'm not sure if I prefer this or bryer leter but I think about this one more. Nick's most minimalist record and maybe most personal. I don't think it's a masterpiece but I understand why some people love it although I feel there's better options out there (Phil Elverum's stuff for example or even Jackson C. Frank's self- titled).
I'm not a big fan of reggae. I've tried to give the genre and Bob multiple chances and I think I just don't quite click with it. Maybe it's just how many people make him and weed a huge part of their personality and much of that feels a bit too corny to me. That said, much of what I've heard from him as been the singles which are overplayed to hell.
This record was a great surprise as I found myself really enjoying the more organic and jamming aspects. I'm a big fan of the production choices here, it has a little bit of a live/lo-fi tinge to it. I think for what it is, it's great. Feels like a record of its time in the best way and overall, the whole of the record never over-imposed on me. Like, I can put this on during a hangout and it's chill. But yeah, loving the guitar work on this one. Will definitely check out more Marley & the Wailers like Light a Fire.
I've never heard an Isley Brothers album before and didn't know what to expect other than maybe smooth RnB stuff. I was pleasantly surprised with the vibrancy and skillful mix of blues, soul, and electric funk. It's a winning combo and a smooth listen. I really liked this.
I've already listened to this a bunch and it's one of my favorite albums ever. Probably as peak of a metal album you can get as it incorporates so much of what's been done up until this point but also retains its own identity. To create a record with pacing this good is an achievement. Truly a masterwork of a record.
This was a fine record. I've never heard of Khaled before but I've heard his more traditional Rai stuff is great so I'll spin that sometime. He's a great singer and there's a good mix of languages and styles here. The biggest issue was the implementation of more western pop elements that come off cheesy more than anything. This is obviously from a more american perspective so it might work for some folks. I know France is guilty of this too. But yeah, I'd like to look into more Rai so I can have a better informed opinion. But cool stuff!
Bought this at half priced books back when all I listened to was classic rock. Now it's been 10 years since then and I've listened to a bunch of different stuff. This is a good record! I echo the same sentiments in that it's nothing innovative but it does hone in on all the lessons learned and practices done by the bands that inspired them. It's also a very cozy album. Good riffs but never too imposing. I could throw this on at a family gathering and it'd work well. I love the organ here and production is well done for what it is. Yeah I like it for what it is.
One of the most overrated rap albums ever. Too long, raps about the same thing over and over, and just felt unnecessary to me. There's bops but they only go so far. Many better rap albums in the 90s.
A good soul record. The title track is legendary but I'm always fond of its sequel that most people don't know. I really like this one. Maybe my favorite Marvin Gaye so far.
Very cool. Very fun. Definitely changed my perspective on salsa.
Most overrated Black Sabbath album and one of the most overrated records of all time in my opinion. Yes, the riffs are catchy and they're good stuff on here, but compared to the first album, this one feels less engaging to me. It doesn't even have the best riffs (check out Vol. 4 or Sabotage). It's good, but not THAT good, you know?
