Wow. I was familiar with some of the songs, of course. But the whole short album was a bit of a surprise. What a fun, loose and playful recording! Sometimes more jazzy, sometimes nearly rock and roll. Great fun and quintessentially 1950s.
Iconic songs, no doubt. I however struggle to enjoy the album. There's too much of a feeling of sameness. I also find out quite noisy, and that combination with the singer's voice just doesn't really do it for me.
Was surprised. When this came out, I was still listening to grunge. The radio hits that came out, I found a bit cloying. In hindsight and in context of the whole album, that definitely contains some more grungy songs, I quite like it. Fun, energetic. I love the drums, his style is so recognizable. Recordings a bit flat?
Classical Joni Mitchell - all about the stories. Too much work for me, but I get why so many people like it.
The drugs don't work is an anthem, but for the rest I always found it a bit annoying. Hasn't really become more interesting with time. One of those records that everyone of our age had, and put on during dinner parties. A bit yawn for me...
Another one of those albums that were played during dinners all the time. It was definitely groundbreaking, although I wouldn't call it pleasant. Not something I would listen to a lot anymore, but just right every now and then.
Didn't really get familiar with hiphop back in this time, but kind of enjoyed it for its playful and laid back attitude. I am surprised how well this has aged: I still really like listening to this album, have played it a few times now and not yet bored. Love the horns, the samples and the additional voices. Most lyrics don't go very deep, more like battle tracks. Some social commentary. Really decent recording quality, considering the age and underground nature of hiphop back then. Will keep this around, probably buy a CD.
Found this very hard to listen to. Hate music that is built around solos. Just play a song, dammit
Like Queen Latifah, fun laid back old hip hop. Slow, melodic, well articulated. Not much thematic diversity, but i like it. Collab with Aerosmith was a genius move by Rick Rubin
Sheesh. You can hear that these are some great musicians. But for the love of Pete, who gave them so many drugs? Hate to high hell. Perhaps with exception of the few classical rock and roll tracks.
Some of the slower songs (Moon dreams, Boplicity) I enjoyed as moody background music. Nice for working or reading. Many of the other songs are a bit too note-filled for my taste. I'm not a jazz nut, and I feel that much of the Jazz repertoire is meant to show off the technical and academic prowess of the players. At some points (Rocker for example) the big band sound makes me smile. But the solos turn me off again.
Not really sure why this is on a greatest albums list? I liked listening to it, but it didn't shatter me. Nice, friendly. Still sounds a bit Americal to me in places, but maybe it was chosen because it was a switch to re-acceptance of English folk?
An album full of bangers. For my regular listening, it's too smooth and too repetitive.
Solemn and dark. Reads a bit like a poem (a la Joni Mitchell) or a prayer. The thing with this type of album is, that it hits you hard if the themes happen to match your experience at the moment. This one doesn't really for me. Not a bad album, and cool to see a man who is not afraid to touch large emotions.
Love the doubling horns and other brass playfulness. Love that they tend to somewhat start and finish a song, not getting (too) lost in solos, although towards the end of the album it starts falling more and more into the 'annoying jazz tricks' pit for me. For example in 'Blues for Huey' an icky long drum solo. The songs tend to have an emotional story arc, which I appreciate. Virtuosity is not the point. I still don't find instrumental jazz interesting enough to sit through an entire album. But in the right time and place, this could be ok.
