1001 Albums Summary

I wish I liked Reggae a bit more! Objectively this is a great album and I enjoy protest music so that's also a big plus but it's just not a style that I find challenging or that I would sit up in my seat to listen more deeply to. I'd give 3.8 if you could be more precise.

WELL THEN - this is an absolute favourite and never fails to catapult me back to the halcyon teenage days of feeling free and riding around in my friend's first car. I think I know it by heart at this point and I've yet to find a Millennial that doesn't know and love most of the songs. It really is banger after banger. I especially love the light touch of world music, religious themes, angsty elements and alt rock. She's got a penchant for the descending, galloping rhythms and themes ('Wake up', 'You oughta know') which makes her tracks instantly recognisable. At uni, so many of my peers were already writing about "the death of the album" - streaming services were already killing album sales and people's attention spans. Thankfully JLP was released early enough to escape that fate - it was released in 1995 and we were still singing it at the tops of our lungs throughout the 2000s and beyond. 'Mary Jane' is the sleeper hit for me - not the most famous track but I have a soft spot for it.

I don't hate Coldplay but I live close enough to the Etihad stadium to get unwanted tickets every time they play in Manchester. 1. Politik - incredibly boring, borderline triggering drumline 2. In my place - overplayed but I'd sing along if it came on the radio 3. God put a - Attempt at being Radiohead? 4. The Scientist - I like this despite myself. Too long 5. Clocks - Probably my favourite one on the album 6. Daylight - Feels v 60s Summer of Love inspired 7. Green Eyes - Not sure I've heard this before - quite like it 8. Warning Sign - Skipped it - ran out of patience 9. A Whisper - Tedious 10. A rush of blood to the head - Meh 11. Amsterdam - Forgot about this one

To my shame, I know very little about The Rolling Stones. This strikes me as a great album to have on at a house party - it's a hazy bluesy album. One track blends into the next well enough and they're not bad songs but none make me want to really *listen*.

It's no "Play Dead" that's for sure, but I really like this album. It's very ART and not easy listening, but that's the point - Vulnicure means "Cure for wounds". The first track, "Stonemilker" is my favourite - I enjoy the synth and strings throughout - very anthemic! It's a vulnerable album and if you like this - Imogen Heap has a similar aesthetic to her music. I'd give 3.5 as not the best of her work, I'm rounding up because the artist is so unique.

Not heard this lady before - I love Folk so this is a good one for me. She has a gentle warble to her - not overly drawling which is nice. Another one I'd give 3.5 to as it's ok but very exposed and I'm not sure that there is enough variation to the melodies or vocal tone, I think they're all in the same key even (or at least sound like it). It's Joni-esque but without the sparkle. Rounding down this time as some of the songs sound strained rather than uplifting so I found myself skipping through it. I wouldn't rush to go see her live.

Not my favourite style of music - kinda reminds me of Morrissey :/

Two Rolling Stones albums in a week gather even more moss - I can't say I really enjoy this enough to put it on again which probably won't be a popular view!

Carried by Waterfalls imo - I'm not really a fan of the genre but I feel like the rest of the album is weak

Ok album but a bit punky for me

Went in ready to hate this but it wasn't at all what I expected! Really liked Stem / Long stem medley with the extracts from Heat.

Love Arcade Fire but I prefer the later albums - still great so giving a 4
