Ugh! Can’t get into it. Wasn’t made for me and that’s ok. Hate the cover it starts there.
Nice soft folksy sound. Beautiful and interesting voice.
Generally this is very basic sounding pop/light rock music. I think individually the members are talented. It doesn’t come together in an interesting way. I’ll Wait sounds like so many other songs in this genre. Almost too referential to other songs. Hot for Teacher is musically interesting but lyrically seems silly from 30 year old men. When I hear the musicianship it makes me wish the songs were better.
I really like this album. As an 80’s girl it brought back memories and it felt nostalgic. The blend of blues, rock and 8o’s synth worked for me. This album starts at so strong with the first four tracks being really good while bringing variety. I also really enjoyed
nobody’s girl. I will definitely be adding some of these tracks to my favorites playlists so I can listen more often.
I need to remove my opinions about Michael Jackson’s personal life in order to review this album because it’s really about the music and there’s some really great music here. Starting off strong with Wanna be Startin’ Somethin’, you can immediately hear that the production quality is fantastic.
The lyrics are a bit odd. It’s at times inspirational and at times just kind of really dark so it’s a bit of a question lyrically for me. But it’s really fun to to listen to with what I hear to be a Latin inspired sound with the horns it’s a really fun song. Moving on to Baby be Mine. It hits me right away that it sounds like a Luther Vandross track and I kind of wish it was. I like this song and Michael sings it well, but the style of it I think would be better in Luther’s voice. The Girl is Mine. Ugh. Why? Two great artist together on a stupid song. Moving on to Thriller the title track which is iconic. Combined with the accompanying video it’s groundbreaking. The production on this song is amazing love it. Beat it is another iconic pop song bringing a little bit more of an edgy rock sound for Michael Jackson. Really great song and became an 80s anthem. Oh Billy Jean. This song really bugs me as a woman. Playing into that old trope of the scheming women just out to trap a man. It’s hard to like. Objectively it sounds good but the lyrics stink.
Human nature is a really beautiful track. It’s really beautifully mixed I love the production on it. It’s really nice to listen to however, when you dig down into the lyrics you realize this is a really beautiful song about a guy who just wants to hook up and justifies it that it’s just the way human nature. It doesn’t ruin the song for me that the lyrics are a little ick. It makes me wish that this beautiful song spoke about human nature in a different way. Maybe a missed opportunity to make a really impactful song.
Before I revisited the track, PYT, I just thought in my head out of memory that I kind of liked it and remembered it was catchy. But, I realized really quickly that the lyrics really gave me the ick. My knowledge of Michael Jackson’s problematic relationships with children creeped back into my mind. Hard to avoid with these lyrics. Some of the backing vocals like the loud grunt is just weird and it made this song really cheesy so not my favorite. The last track the lady in my life is just a full cheese fest and I didn’t really like it.
I don’t usually go into this much detail on my reviews but this album is such an iconic album and revered as such a masterpiece that I really wanted to kind of deep dive, and we familiarize myself with each track.
I think production wise this a masterpiece in pop music. Lyrically overall, I give it a C.
I think Michael Jackson is a gifted vocalist and can move his voice through his songs in a beautiful way. Personally his voice does not resonate with me in terms of emotional connection. I find his voice thin and lacking depth.
I really enjoyed listening to this album. I remember loving Le Freak and I Want Your Love but I wasn’t as familiar with some of the other songs. The whole album is great. The production quality, the fabulous vocals and great instrumentals make this album a joy to listen to.
Chic Cheer is a fun opening track. It has the feeling of being at a concert and waiting for the band to start. Love the baseline.
Le Freak was a monster hit in the 70’s and it has endured over the decades as a quintessential party song.
Savior Faire, Happy Man and the classic I Want Your Love are all great. They really embodied the joyous sound and rhythm of disco music.
For me, the only weak track is At Last I Am Free which is a bit boring and too long.
This album is a winner.
This album was disappointing. For the most part I found it boring.
Girl from Ipanema is a great song but I’ve heard other versions that are much better.
The only other track that I liked was I Concentrate on You. I liked the arrangement.
I thought Frank sounded kinda flat and the vocals didn’t seem to go with the
music.
I like Frank Sinatra’s voice more when it is accompanied by a robust arrangement and a swingy song.
The paired back samba/bossa music didn’t complement his vocals.
Really did not like this at all.
This album was interesting for me. I appreciated a lot of things about it and other things I really bugged me.
The sound of his voice was initially bothering me and it couldn’t put my finger on why. I actually googled critiques of his voice and saw the phrase “lazy whine” and thought , that’s it!!! That kind of nasal lazy whine quality didn’t always fit with what else I was hearing which was theatrical arrangements well delivered.
His voice reminds me of grunge music singers.
I liked the first two tracks and Beautiful Child but the rest of the songs I did not care for.
Not my cup of tea. His voice is awful.
I love this album. This is a no skip album for me. Every track is good. Set Fire to the Rain and Turning Tables are my favorite tracks. Her voice is so powerful and full of emotion.
