Album Summary

Haus der Lüge (English: House of Lies) is the fifth full-length studio release by the German band Einstürzende Neubauten, released in 1989 by Rough Trade Records. It was reissued in 2002 by Some Bizzare Records in the U.K., the band's own label Potomak in Europe and Thirsty Ear Recordings in the U.S. Einstürzende Neubauten (German: [ˈaɪnˌʃtʏʁtsn̩də ˈnɔʏˌbaʊtn̩], lit. 'Collapsing New Buildings') is a German experimental music group, formed in West Berlin in 1980. The band currently comprises founding members Blixa Bargeld (lead vocals, guitar, keyboard) and N.U. Unruh (custom-made instruments, percussion, vocals), plus Jochen Arbeit (guitar, vocals), and Rudolph Moser (custom-built instruments, percussion, vocals), who both joined the line-up in 1997. In 2026, Josefine Lukschy joined the band as the bass player. One of their trademarks is the use of custom-built instruments, predominantly made out of scrap metal and building tools, and noises, in addition to standard musical instruments. Their early albums were unremittingly harsh, with Bargeld's vocals shouted and screamed above a din of banging and scraping metal percussion. Subsequent recordings found the group's sound growing somewhat more conventional, yet still containing many unorthodox elements.

Haus der Lüge is the fifth studio release by Einstürzende Neubauten. Compared to Kollaps this is more "traditional" industrial rock. Certainly "Ein Stuhl in der Hölle" and "Haus der Lüge" are songs with more or less normal instrumentation are even singing. Overall it's just a great album. At the time of this albums release I saw them live in Leeuwarden as a 16 year old boy. It was one of my best music experiences ever. The iron on iron of drilling machines on industrial springs... it was overwhelming. I must admit I consider "Zeichnungen des Patienten O. T." and "Halber Mensch" as their best albums. I know there must be room for these at the bottom of the user album ratings.

The return of Einstürzende Neubaten! Compared to Kollaps this is a much more dance centric release, though there are still familiar noisy elements present. Other than the 12-minute ”Fiat Lux” it is a much more digestable release, so perhaps it will fare better than the debut sitting in the bottom 10 rated albums on this site. If people can get past the cover.

Horse cock

This one surprised me - not the kind of music I usually like, but this was great. Maybe I do like industrial rock. 4/5

Why didn't they include this on the OG list over the trash that they picked. This was far more listenable. I didn't enjoy it, but it was listenable. My personal rating: 2/5 My rating relative to the list: 2.5/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

When previously reviewing experimental noise-rock, I've opined that it's never really the music that you enjoy - it's the surprising feeling of missing the music once it's absent. Haus der Lüge definitely leaves an Einstürzende Neubauten-shaped gap in your consciousness when it finishes, and that's, for me at least, a good indicator of whether it's decent experimental noise or not. You should be left with a yearning hole.

Kollaps, the album on the official list from this group, did not go well for me. I do have a friend who apparently really enjoys this music, so I’m up for trying this out, horse peeing on the cover and all. … several hours later … Wow… I thought I hated this group, and it turns out I hated that album. This was definitely not conventional, but it appealed to me in some strange way. I’m starting to get it…

Would have personally gone for "Halber Mensch" instead for a second Einstürzende Neubauten album, but this is a great showcase of their more accessible side. Still has that trademark darkness and strangeness to it (the ejaculating horse on the cover certainly helps set this atmosphere up and scare the shit out of everybody opening this site in public), but it's surprisingly fun as well, with songs like the danceable "Feurio!". Cool pick. 4/5.

Was there another album by this band on this list already? I feel like I read that Wikipedia line about custom-built instruments made of scrap metal before. Anyway, big red horse dick blasting the ground with horse piss, let's go. Lyrically for me of course it might as well be a Python shouting EIGEN SCHLEIGEN AFTEN WAFTEN, I don't speak a word and it just sounds comically German. Musically more tolerable than the descriptions might lead me to believe. Left to my own devices I would not seek this out.

This was surprisingly good for Einstürzende Neubauten. I would take this over the album on the original list every day.

Cover: 4/5. Definitely unique. Might be the second best penis on a cover behind Nirvana's Nevermind. 1989, Industrial rock The more I listen the more I like it. I'm still not much of a fan of Industrial rock, but I'm giving it a chance.

Album cover: 4/5. Interesting Album in general: hard for me to get into as someone not really into Industrial Rock. Ein Stuhl in der hoelle (A Chair in Hell) is actually quite good on first listen. Standouts: Ein Stuhl in der Hoelle Rating: 3/5

Industrial, experimental rock, post-industrial, noise. Me disgusta. Un 2. Venga, tiene canciones que están bien, sobre todo la última. Un 3.

2 I mean, it was very interesting

German vocals just put me off this, otherwise interesting album,

Eh, didn't really enjoy this. Certainly an interesting cover though. 2 stars.
