Pretenders
PretendersSome good moments and interesting instrumentation throughout. Really enjoyed the instrumental song but some of the poppier songs weakened the record vs the heavier stuff. Feel like other records from the same era hold up better

Lyrically, a bit of a parody these days but a clearly influential record at the time and had a huge impact on the genre especially mixing rock music and guitars with rap/hip-hop.
Decent. Far better than contemporary punk albums at the time. Can see the influence on almost every punk band after them. Wouldn’t re-listen to it often enough but appreciate its pioneering sound
An absolute treasure, a gem, the GOAT. King of noise albums. Ruins the rest of Sonic Youths discography for me because the other albums can’t come close to this. Perhaps a little too long would be the only criticism
Like it was written by ghosts of American highways and train lines. None of the pomp and polish of his other work but a stunning, stripped back acoustic record that captures the working man spirit of much of Springsteen’s work
Not hugely keen although she has a great voice
Similar to the Clash’s first album, influenced almost everything after it in that genre and paved a way for rap. But definitely has some dated themes that are a product of the time. Influential, but not a repeat listener for me
The good songs are great and pure classic Bowie, the bad songs are twee and forgettable so makes the listen a slightly up and down experience
Started well but trailed off later in the record. Can hear some influences on Springsteens early records here. Nice listen but probably wouldn’t revisit

Very enjoyable record. Instrumentation and vocals are both incredible with some unexpected, modern sounding techniques for the time it was recorded. Prefer the conceptual part/first half of the record as the second half sounds slightly mashed together with off cuts but still great songs
A fucking racket…vocals like a cheese grater to the brain
Better record than I thought it would be. Couple of the songs were pretty cookie cutter southern rock noise but some decent classic rock in other places
Feels like a soundtrack to a dream. Can see the influences on Nick Cave and Radiohead in places. A really beautiful record
Dynamic and interesting record with amazing string and acoustic instrumentation. Nice use of guest vocalists and some hard hitting lyrics and themes. Great stuff and a shining example of what rap music can be
A couple of great tracks on here such as the title track and Across the Universe. It works as a whole album but wouldn’t listen to too many of the tracks on their own. I prefer this sound to the earlier glam rock Bowie
Interesting record, background music in the best way. Great example of experimental krautrock and seems to have influenced many bands across many genres. A little frustrating in places because of the length of some passages
Love the laid back, lo-fi style beats on this. Always enjoy the flow of Methods rapping. Nice use of simple samples.

Beautiful, dark and mysterious. Nick Cave (and Warren Ellis) at his best. I don’t think the Bad Seeds music will ever be for everyone but for those who find joy and comfort in the sadder things in life this album is a must listen.
Some good bits but nothing majorly memorable on there for my liking. Plenty of better records coming out of the grunge scene
Just a not very good version of Springsteen’s first couple of records.
Definitely better than anticipated. It absolutely stinks of the 90’s but some of the lesser known songs on here are pretty cool compared to the overplayed big hits. The vocals can grate a little for my taste… The musical equivalent of ‘Friends’
A classic bad seeds album but I feel it misses some of the more cinematic elements of the more recent Nick Cave records. Definitely some great moments and probably a grower with more to find on each listen
Background music in a burger restaurant or something like that. It was fine but repetitive. Definitely didn’t need to listen to it before I die
Fantastic record, really enjoyed the vibe from the live recording. Amazing instrumentation throughout. Would never have come across this album without this project…
One of the best debut albums ever. Hasn’t aged at all and sounds as good on the 100th listen as it does on the first.
The musicianship throughout this is fantastic. Really enjoyed the feel of this album. Knew of Joni but had never taken the time to listen, would definitely revisit the album. Didn’t think the last track really matched the vibe of the rest of the album though.
Glam rock just isn’t for me.
I feel like this record has influenced so many of my favourite artists. Went straight back in for a second listen. Big fan 🦇
Grew up with a lot of ska and reggae but this album completely passed me by. Wish I’d heard it sooner. Its everything you’d want from a roots reggae album, important themes, beautiful gang vocals, laid back rhythms.
Much better metal out there. Clearly an influential record but as with most things, what came after is much better. Teachers Pet can get in the bin.
As with most albums of this genre and time, the recording lets it down. Vocals aren’t my favourite from the early thrash records but other than that it’s a pretty enjoyable record.
I’ll never understand anyone who wakes up and actively puts this album on
Not listening to any of this cunts records.
Stunning. A couple of songs throw the vibe off a little (there’s more to life…) but overall a beautiful record.
Some great, some forgettable. Fun record in places. ‘Editions of you’ was a toe tapper and ‘In every house…’ was a great gothic sounding track. Whole album got more experimental as it went on.
Never listened to this album yet somehow knew almost every song from it. Not to my taste but an absolute hit machine at the time.
Sounds like some decent songs with a bunch of Fisher Price instruments played over the tracks. I’ve always wanted to like New Order but the majority of their work is ruined by awful synth choices over what would be otherwise good songs. Less said about the lyrics the better half the time too
An ok album. Not a scratch on Joshua Tree and earlier work. I feel like this is where they started to go inside themselves abit
One of those great Sunday afternoon albums. Love the feel of the songs in the live setting but not a record I’d visit too often
A bit long, could do with some cutting down to make it more streamline but generally a decent record
Certainly better than their Arthur album but still pretty bland. Starts off ok but descends into bland 60’s twee shite nearer the end
Altered my brain chemistry when I first listened to this as a kid. Bangers from start to finish.
I love this record but it’s definitely too long in places. Master of the new wave of jazz/funk artists out there
Nope 👎
I reckon if you played this album to people without the name attached, the ratings would be much higher. Yes their recent work is pop trash but their first few records were fantastic. Excellent debut but I prefer their 2nd & 3rd records overall
Sounds like an early Bowie parody album. Thought I’d enjoy this as I love Albarns work both solo and Gorillaz but this album ain’t it
