Foo Fighters by Foo Fighters
Jul 11 2023

meh, made very little impression

Violator by Depeche Mode
Jul 12 2023

Very awkward lyrics but I quite like the soundscape, a couple of standout tracks

Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus by Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds
Jul 13 2023

Too long for me to fully grapple with, but lots of really good songs, interesting and distinctive sound. I'd like to listen to more!

In Utero by Nirvana
Jul 14 2023

Liked a couple of tracks but I don't have enough angst to connect with it

The Doors by The Doors
Jul 15 2023

3.5, liked the instrumentation a lot

Wild Is The Wind by Nina Simone
Jul 16 2023

Wow. Her voice is incredible, and so full of emotion, it makes every song feel profound. Even the ones that were written for someone else - it's hard to imagine anyone doing them better than this. The first track was maybe my least favourite, and really didn't prepare me for what was coming - it was followed by Four Women, which pretty much made me stop what I was doing and pay attention. Fantastic.

Jul 17 2023

Half hold music, and half the background music after you finish a race in F Zero and you're looking at the results. Didn't get anything out of this, but to be fair I'm listening in a context that doesn't suit it (eagerly awaiting a new Greatest Album every day). Dunno why it's on the list though. On the bright side it didn't distract me from my admin!

Yeah, didn't really speak to me. The whole thing just felt kinda milque. Probably not helped by me getting The Band yesterday, which was hella crunchy

Meat Puppets II by Meat Puppets
Jul 20 2023

On my first listen I was really enjoying the start, but eventually I started losing interest. It turned out I was accidentally listening to the deluxe edition with half a dozen demo tracks at the end sooo problem solved ✅ But on the flipside, the demo version of Aurora Borealis at the end was one of my favourite tracks 🤷‍♂️ Less flashy than its album counterpart, but just kinda groovy and chill. This was a great discovery! Full of ideas, nice short tracks, lots of energy but also kind of meandering about. Thanks 1001 albums generator ❤️

Neon Bible by Arcade Fire
Jul 21 2023

Didn't pay a ton of attention, and suspect this isn't really my genre, but I liked the organ and general operatic vibes

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
Jul 22 2023

I want to listen to this more I think - I liked the start and end but it blurred together in the middle. But some of these tracks really evoke a whole world.

Van Halen by Van Halen
Jul 23 2023

Loved the energy on this, lots of bangers

Dire Straits by Dire Straits
Jul 24 2023

I'm kinda shocked this was such a big hit. I couldn't really grab on to anything - found it tepid and nothingy

Jul 25 2023

4 for speakerboxxx, 2 for the love below. I wasn't expecting to like Big Boi's album so much more, but it was banging, funky, lots of highlights, not as esoteric as some Outkast albums but more energetic, and great lyrical flow. Andre's album...is coherent narratively, but often cynical, and musically kind of all over the place. It's ambitious, but the length is trying and I found a lot of the genre riffs hollow. I'll listen to it again some time, separate from speakerboxxx, but for now it didn't land with me.

Fear and Whiskey by Mekons
Jul 26 2023

Rough and interesting, but probably too much of a downer for me to come back to

Step In The Arena by Gang Starr
Jul 31 2023

A lot of very weak lyrics but pretty good production, 2.5

Happy Sad by Tim Buckley
Aug 04 2023

Starts mid and gets worse from there, droning on and on and endlessly winding down. Gypsy woman is a bad kind of wtf moment. The exception is Buzzin' Fly, which actually transported me somewhere I wanted to stay - there's a time and place for the kind of constant breezy melancholy it conjures up, and it hit me in the right mood.

Liquid Swords by GZA
Aug 07 2023

I respect this album and its dark spooky atmosphere, but I don't actually enjoy listening to it much.

Dust by Screaming Trees
Aug 10 2023

Liked it a bit more than Nirvana

Rock Bottom by Robert Wyatt
Aug 16 2023

Interesting, but not sure I'll revisit it and I give too many 3s

Low by David Bowie
Aug 29 2023
Manassas by Stephen Stills
Aug 30 2023
Imagine by John Lennon
Sep 05 2023
Frank by Amy Winehouse
Sep 07 2023
Songs From The Big Chair by Tears For Fears
Sep 08 2023

Really liked 'Everybody wants to rule the world', otherwise liked the sound but the songs went on a bit

Revolver by Beatles
Sep 11 2023

The songwriting on this is wild, every track has some super catchy hook and almost all of them are excellent. Goes down smooth after listening to the White Album - Revolver still has an interesting mix of styles, but it's really coherent as well, a great album listen. Also the average track length is really short (2.5 mins) - might be a product of the era? Either way it's great.

Destroyer by KISS
Sep 13 2023

The rockers are fun, the ballads are bad

The Man Machine by Kraftwerk
Sep 26 2023

Extra star for the very nice Neon Lights

Remain In Light by Talking Heads
Dec 19 2023

One of my favourites, Born Under Punches blew my mind the first time I heard it and still does

The Band by The Band
Dec 27 2023

Music from Big Pink has gone up from 4 stars to 5 since I rated it on here - maybe this will too. King Harvest was a great ending!

Bat Out Of Hell by Meat Loaf
Jan 01 2024

Like a better version of the Kiss album I got a while back. Enjoyed the first half more than the second, but I'll happily round up to 4⭐

Queen II by Queen
Jan 02 2024

My fave Queen album. I don't even like the first half very much, but the second half is SO GOOD and such a perfectly structured sequence of songs (I love how they all flow together, ending with Funny How Love Is, then having Seven Seas of Rhye as a palette cleanser). Totally packed with ideas and has the classic Queen sound. I'm also so used to albums giving you their best stuff early and then fizzling out, that having an album do the exact opposite is super refreshing. Love it!
