Rock 'n' Roll's history has some good examples of famous bands that ascended along an arc of commercial success, and then gave us a clear inflection point in their artistic expression after which nothing would ever be the same. This list will likely point to quite a few of them, but this record arguably changed everything.
Over. Rated
It might have been the greatest record of all time if it had been a single LP.
Hugely personal record for me.
Some great songs, but not sure it holds up over time.
If your album has a song like "Cranes In the Sky" on it, it probably doesn't matter what the rest of it sounds like.
A truly terrible band who just were lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time.
Sure, it's just a pop record from a certain time and place, but these people knew what they were doing
She wasn't just ahead of her time, she invented her time.
The mothership has landed.
They don't call him The Greatest Rapper alive for nothing.
It's easy to take for granted how good this band was, and for how long. It's not my favorite Cure record, but A Forest might be my favorite Cure song.
Loved it then. Not so much now.
Nearly perfect and captures it's time so well.
Saying that they were ahead of their time doesn't even make half the point.
I can't stand her.
YES
Does it hold up? Kinda yeah!
It's not really my thing, but there's no denying that it's a classic.
I sure did love this time in music with bands like The Vines, The Strokes, The Hives playing smart catchy riff-rock.
He's not just another singer-songwriter, he's Paul freaking Simon.
Meh.
A classic, top to bottom.
They say he's a genius. They are correct.
Such a great 90's record. Bob is a hero. I've tried to get every band I was ever in to cover "Helpless".
I've gotta say Lost Souls is a better Doves record.
Great record from a time when people were doing stuff for the first time.
Meh. Just meh.
When it's good, it's amazing.
I see a lot of the middling reviews for this record, but I think it goes to whether or not you get the Stones. This one is all about Keith and Nicky, and if that's not your thing, you'll likely want to pass on it. Despite being overly long, it's a distillation of their thing; a record to go to if you wanted to sum up what they're about.
I was a kid the first time I heard Jailbreak, and it was off this record. Phil was really something special, but the whole band is so tight on these tracks. They're like a funkier, bluesier version of AC/DC here.
Still very sublimely great.
Tragically, he's one of those artists that you wonder what they might have had in store for us in his future.
One of the best of their best. Perhaps it's an answer to the question of what's The One Radiohead album to listen to, if you could only pick one to explain this band.
I've never listened to this record before but wow the guitars sound great. The band is just as tight as some of their later records are.
Not their best work maybe.
It's an East Coast thing. Total classic.
My favorite Zep record since forever.
Classic
Not so sure this sound has aged well.
I'm the person I am today because of this record.
Classic Rock!
A classic that gave us something different in its time.
Ohhh...
Quite a mother
Unmitigated classic.
