1001 Albums Summary

Awful, except for two songs: 'Snuff' and 'Vermillion, Pt. 2 - Bloodstone Mix' were actually pretty good. The other 13 songs were like torture. Full of screaming, yelling, profanity, etc. It reminded me of phone calls from a certain person in my life. I suspect I'll rate the album 1 star.

Iconic, but only pretty good. I find the songs overly repetitive. This is a true edge case; I wish I could rate it 3.5 stars, but I think I’ll give it 3. Maybe 4, we’ll see how I feel tomorrow.

The first song alone warrants five stars for the entire album! This music always makes me happy. It also brings to mind good times with my wonderful mom.

Pretty good. I enjoyed it, and feel like it's above average, a bit more creative than average as well as more enjoyable than average. I'll probably rate it 4 out of 5. I'd probably say it's about 4.2 out of 5, so I'll give it 4.

This was my first time back after many, many months away from doing this! So I'm not quite in the groove yet with rating things. I'll call it a 2 or a 3. It wasn't super pleasant, but it was interesting.

Musically, it was quite good - maybe a 4.5/5. However, it was incredibly misogynistic and violent. Clearly the writer felt that people who criticize his music for its misogyny and violence are bigoted, and surely some of them are, but he is also clearly very bigoted, especially when it comes to women. As such, I can't give it anywhere near a 4.5/5. I can give it a 3, *maybe*. Maybe a 2. Hmm...

Quite good!

I don’t think I’m usually the biggest fan of music from the 80s, so when I saw which album I’d be listening to I expected I’d give it about two stars, but I enjoyed it more than I thought I would - although I think I’d get tired of it very quickly. 3 stars.

Good music. Nostalgia is acting on me here, which may warp my perspective. When I saw what I’d be listening to today, I thought maybe 5 stars, but when I listened I thought 4 stars, so I expect I’ll rate it 4 stars.

I have a bit of a dilemma about this album: I listened to most of it on 2025y02m11d while playing a bit of the strategy game 'Heart of the Machine' - and this was pretty much the ideal listening scenario for this album, as the music fit exceptionally well with the 'vibes' (as kids today would say) of the game. Based on that, I'm inclined to give the album 4/5. However, I don't think I'll ever seek out this album again. I don't think it has made much of an impression on me. How can I rate such an album more than 3/5 stars? I feel I give far too many albums from the '1001 Albums' book 3/5 stars. The album is also 3 hours and 27 minutes long, which isn't bad per se, but given that many albums on this list (in the book) are 30-60 minutes long, and this album doesn't strike me as exceptional in any way, it seems a bit pretentious to break the norms surrounding album length to such an extreme extent. In fact, the final two songs on this album are each over an hour in length - having a song that's as long as two other albums on this list seems a bit obnoxious. As I write this, I have 41 minutes left in the final song on the album, and I still need to get cleaned up for my plans with Liam today. I don't know how I could do that and still finish the album today, even though I started listening almost 3 hours ago. That speaks to how extreme the length is. Edit, written the next morning: I want to add that in some ways I think having two songs that are each over an hour long is actually a bit obnoxious. Since I doubt I'll ever seek this music out again, I'm tempted to rate it 2 stars. However, since it was pretty good, I'm tempted to rate it 3, and since it fit exceptionally well with the context in which I listened to it, I'm tempted to rate it 4. I think the true rating would be about 3.3. I'll give it a 3.

I listened to this album twice to be sure. This album didn't make me feel good. It made me feel a little uneasy, in fact. It wasn't the sort of music I'd go back to, aside from 'Good Vibrations', which was originally released almost 40 years before this album (so that doesn't count in this album's favour). 'Child Is Father of the Man' is a pretty interesting song, at least. There may be others, but I'm not the biggest fan of this album, in spite of how highly it's rated by music critics (I usually try to avoid that kind of information before rating, but in this case I discovered it while looking up something else). If I were rating it by how interesting it is, maybe 3.8/5. If rating it by how it made me feel, maybe 2.5/5. The latter seems far more important, so I expect I'll give it two or three stars.

3.5/5. Pleasant and interesting (overall). I'm leaning towards giving it 4 stars.
