1001 Albums Summary

Iconic instrumental work. Songwriting and vocal work leaves something to be desired honestly. I’d find myself dreading when the solos ended.

Each song had great moments but most were drawn out so desperately that I couldn’t continue to enjoy it. Clearly an album meant to be danced to , not really sat down and analyzed. Solid talent but very little substance

Typically not my vibe but her voice is wonderful and the energy on this album is surprisingly fun. Will definitely come back to this one

Fosters a very specific energy. Incredible production for the time. Falls to some trappings of 90s hip hop that isn’t my personal favorite, but a great listen

So groovy. A great mashup of a lot of different area sounds of the time. A super fun listen with a decent amount of depth

probably a 3.5. Some great songs and a few legendary ones but too many moments feel meandering and unfulfilled

Take the British pop rock away just leave the Bollywood please

Really enjoyable brit pop with some pretty obvious influences. A few bad songs, including one that is fully in reverse that I’m sure at the time was inventive but is close to unlistenable, float around in the midst but it’s a fun listen.

Smooth operator is perfect, the rest of this album is deeply boring

Surprised by how much I didn’t like this. REM being the most REM they could be and it’s annoying. Man on the Moon is doing a lot of work here

Iconic for a reason. Raw, emotional, and catchy.

Incredible. Only thing that could’ve made it better is maybe less instrumental on the second half but that’s my personal preference.

This is a great example of an incredible band in the later years of their discography. Some of the best songs they’ve ever performed are on this album, with Houses of the Holy being a highlight, but there’s also some real slogs here. In My Time of Dying is the perfect example of this, at nearly 12 minutes long and providing about 3 minutes of actual content. When the guys lean into their funk influences and do some more interesting things this album shines, but when they use the rock crutch it really meanders. Lucky for them, their skill shows in every single song so even the worst songs are better than a lot of things that were coming out at the time.

The worst music Damon Albarn has ever been associated with. Uninspired drivel.

Haunting and beautiful. The atmosphere created on this album is deeply sad but inescapable in a way where you don’t wanna stop listening. There’s a beautiful somberness to each song, even the more upbeat ones, and it’s hard to forget the ultimate history of Nick Drake in listening to this. The words of someone deeply pained and very relatable. A wonderful experience

Approaching this from a critical standpoint is tough for me because holy shit I hate the way Lou Reed sounds SO much. Ultimately there’s are some great instrumental performances over this album and a couple iconic songs but every time he opens his mouth I wanna kill myself. I also just ultimately don’t think this is doing anything even remotely near the other content coming out at this point. While I appreciate the inspiration he was in the more outsider music land, I cannot get down with this shit.

Dazzling! Super fun listen. Danceable, very listenable house that never overstays its welcome.

Mind-blowing. Some of the best, most evocative writing I’ve ever heard. Feels less like an album and more like a conversation. Still as relevant now as ever, which is frustrating and comforting.
