Iconic instrumental work. Songwriting and vocal work leaves something to be desired honestly. I’d find myself dreading when the solos ended.
Each song had great moments but most were drawn out so desperately that I couldn’t continue to enjoy it. Clearly an album meant to be danced to , not really sat down and analyzed. Solid talent but very little substance

Really enjoyable brit pop with some pretty obvious influences. A few bad songs, including one that is fully in reverse that I’m sure at the time was inventive but is close to unlistenable, float around in the midst but it’s a fun listen.
Smooth operator is perfect, the rest of this album is deeply boring

This is a great example of an incredible band in the later years of their discography. Some of the best songs they’ve ever performed are on this album, with Houses of the Holy being a highlight, but there’s also some real slogs here. In My Time of Dying is the perfect example of this, at nearly 12 minutes long and providing about 3 minutes of actual content. When the guys lean into their funk influences and do some more interesting things this album shines, but when they use the rock crutch it really meanders. Lucky for them, their skill shows in every single song so even the worst songs are better than a lot of things that were coming out at the time.

Haunting and beautiful. The atmosphere created on this album is deeply sad but inescapable in a way where you don’t wanna stop listening. There’s a beautiful somberness to each song, even the more upbeat ones, and it’s hard to forget the ultimate history of Nick Drake in listening to this. The words of someone deeply pained and very relatable. A wonderful experience
Approaching this from a critical standpoint is tough for me because holy shit I hate the way Lou Reed sounds SO much. Ultimately there’s are some great instrumental performances over this album and a couple iconic songs but every time he opens his mouth I wanna kill myself. I also just ultimately don’t think this is doing anything even remotely near the other content coming out at this point. While I appreciate the inspiration he was in the more outsider music land, I cannot get down with this shit.
Look I get what they’re going for. But most of the time the weird timing stuff and strange harmonies just get repetitive and annoying, not really interesting. The pieces get recycled over and over and it just doesn’t get anywhere for me.

Mind-blowing. Some of the best, most evocative writing I’ve ever heard. Feels less like an album and more like a conversation. Still as relevant now as ever, which is frustrating and comforting.
Not mind blowing as far as subject matters goes, but some super fun songs on here and everything is performed very crisp and tight. A couple iconic performances on here shine through some of the more standard hair metal fare, these guys are clearly at their best when they’re ripping and having a good time doing it. A couple deeper cut tracks on here just blend together a bit too much for it to be a must listen for me.
She writes well and there’s some songs on here I enjoy but it’s goes too far into gospel influenced territory for me and her vibrato is far too strong a lot of the time for it to be super enjoyable for me to listen to.
The first Metallica project I’ve heard that really grabbed me. Some of the most insane solos and instrumental work I’ve heard in a second, and starts with two of the bands best songs. I still find myself butting up against the vocals but they work much better in this than in the later work I’ve heard. Save for a bit of the middle of this album blending together a bit this is a really solid experience.
The one flaw of this list is how much weird early British shit is on here for no reason. I’m looking past this one.
A pretty fascinating album for me. For the length of the first song I was worried this was going to be a slog, I don’t really love this almost Tom Waits style alternative blues, but as the album has unfolded it’s become kind of entrancing to me. The simplicity of the Instrumental lends itself to how interesting Nick’s voice is and how good of a storyteller he is. A few songs need just a bit more from either the vocal performance or the band for it to edge closer to an amazing album and not just a great one.
An ambitious piece of work and one she pulls off pretty well. I applaud her for going for a full concept album like this and in most places she executes it in a way that’s entertaining and not too thinky or overbearing. There are a few times where I thought man I’d like a real song right now but overall I’m impressed.
Very fun alternative/punk-infused Britpop. Nothing mind-blowing but fun to listen to all the way through.

Janis’ performance is the only thing that really elevates this album beyond the standard blues infused psych of the day, and even that isn’t enough to make this anything but mid. Piece of my heart is an iconic song but overall not particularly interesting.
An album from Bowie in his series of incredibly consistent work and this shows it well. Well written, well performed and interesting the whole time. Changes and Life on Mars are classic songs. Nothing mind blowing here but very very good.
A product of its time. Some decent to good stuff on here but a lot of questionable genre blends and cringy lines and line delivery.
I looked back at this album fondly in my memory, and while there are some incredible songs on here god DAMN if it isn’t front loaded. Tom Sawyer, YYZ, and Limelight are in my opinion some of the best classic rock songs ever, but the other songs on this album are not doing a ton for me. They aren’t bad, but they all kind of mesh together in my head. Luckily the average here is still very high but it’s no where near the close to perfect album I thought it was

Weird one! Some absolutely incredible songs on here and the first half really had me thinking this would be like a high 4/5 and then the second half just fell flat. A lot of the songs in general are overly long and just repeat themselves and there’s also a weird amount of misogyny? Overall a strange experience but definitely worth a listen, just probably won’t be coming back much.
Goldie is a master of the soundscape here but the songs just don’t evolve enough for me. We spend way too long floating around the EXACT same idea without expansion on a lot of these tracks. He was a pioneer of the sound but ultimately it’s a symptom of the time that it ends up coming across as a little slow.
