I’ve never listened to an AC/DC album before, so here are the true virgin thoughts(except the hits) of the band’s biggest album Hells bells: Kinda what I would picture if i think typical ac/dc tune, really nothing special 5/10. Shoot to Thrill: Very similar and I am already getting a bit annoyed at his voice but I quite liked the ending where there actually seems to be some change in sound so 6/10. What Do You Do for Money: They really have a formula and it’s really not the best one either. I dislike this one a bit more just because of the chanting 4/10. Givin the Dog a Bone: Yeah don’t like it, the call and response really doesn’t fit the music imo 3/10. Let Me Put My Love Into You: I quite like this one, I’ve already realised I’m not a AC/DC fan but this is the first song I actually see a reason a person could like them 6/10. Back In Black: Classic for a reason 9/10. You Shook Me All Night long: Good streak going now. This one’s a bit overrated in my opinion though becomes repetitive after a while 6/10. Have A Drink On Me: the chanting finally goes well with the tune 7/10. Shake a Leg: Guitar was cool, not the chorus 5/10. Rock and Roll Ain’t Noise Pollution: Nice ender, guitar wasn’t over the top like what I’ve gotten used to 6/10. All and all it’s ok. It’s rock for the masses not much to it. 1/1089
To preface this review I really need a bit of sleep, but because I’m doing the daily thing I will put this album on and judge the songs on how good they are at keeping me awake. I’ve only heard two songs previously from the band ”Lonely boy” and ”gold on the ceiling” both of which I feel were playing it very safe just to get on the radio. So I’m not optimistic I’ll make it through the whole thing but I’ll be hoping for an oasis situation where the album previous to the big one is the masterpiece. Everlasting light: I really like the overall sound but the song doesn’t keep me interested, it just feels like the intro prolonged into the entire song. By the end of it I’m already closing my eyes 5/10. Next Girl: Basic rock tune the sort I’ve gotten used to and without lyrics to compensate. By this point I’m really only kept awake by my writing 3/10. Tighten up: It’s not extraordinary in anyway but fun and a bit more to it than the others so far. I’ve gotta say it woke me up a bit 6/10. Howlin for you: I have the same critique I had for the first song and even a bit worse since it’s not as catchy. I’m only still awake because I have the last song’s ending in my mind 4/10. She’s long gone: It feels like I’m going in circles at this point, this is like the second song. Nothing I really like about it and I’m now ever so close to dozing off 3/10. Black mud: Pretty good track. I tend not to rate instrumentals though since there’s not much go on. I can say however that it made me more enthusiastic about continuing. The Only One: Fine song, but nothing special, doesn’t tire me though 6/10. Too Afraid to Love You: it’s just OK 5/10. Ten Cent Pistol: I feel I’m falling in a pattern here I like them but I don’t love them. It may be because i’m now quite tired and tired of the album as a whole but that’s a fair to critique to make because nothing is truly standing out 6/10. Sinister Kid: Second half kept me up but as a whole just not that great 6/10. The Go Getter: I’m kind of bored by this point, figured I would make myself a coffee to finish it but have no motivation to 6/10. I’m not the one: Slow, boring and most likely filler 4/10 Unknown Brother: The album really doesn’t have to go on for as long as it does… but this was cd times so I guess that was preferred 5/10 Never gonna give you up: Change in sound very well done, kept me interested 8/10 These Days: Just an outro song, probably only made because they wanted to put it at the end. I’ve heard a dozen like it. It was a pretty good sedative at least 2/10. zzz zzz zzz…
A band my mum loves and which I’ve only managed to see as a more boring smiths, which in it self is not really that interesting of a band. I however realise that that’s not a fair way to describe them and once the electronic part of the album begins that becomes clear. It’s not a perfect album by any stretch but it’s an amazing debut and they’ve clearly created their own style in it
There’s something I seem to be completely missing when it comes to Nick Drake. I mean he’s one of the most esteemed songwriters of all time, is all that from just doing a few soothing songs? If there is more to him I hope I’ll hear it, but I didn’t on this record.
This one I felt I just needed more time with. I listened to it maybe four times, I obviously love psycho killer but none of the others had time to click except maybe tentative decisions. I guess this site is mostly for first impressions and in that case it’s not getting past a three.
Really pleasantly suprised with this one, thought they were a singles band but the whole album is great
would have probably been a really good album if it wasn’t for the shitty mixing
Overall it’s a very nice record. I was very sceptical because of the first song’s lyrics not flowing so well, the ”who are we to tell it’s not so” rhyming so with so. Luckily that’s the low point of the record and there are some exceptional songs especially the few instrumental tracks and “food for thought”. Really good for a debut
Sorry for being uncultured but I tend to dislike jazz. I get bored with it oh so quickly and then I have to sit through the whole thing, it doesn’t help that jazz is usually so unbelievably long. I didn’t have that problem with this one. It was very easy to get through and surprisingly fun and although it isn’t my thing I can appreciate it for what it is
I found the “meta” lyrics a bit lazy, it sounds like something you would pull out of your arse when you’re just trying to accompany some new guitar part, it’s not the only example of it either. Nonetheless the songs are good so I can’t get too stuck up on it
a clear 5/5 for me, a staple of 2000’s rock. And I’m still blasting it as I write
I listened to this release five times today, just wanting to give it a five. For context this is one of my father’s favourite albums but to me many of the songs just have something missing to them. What I really love about the beatles is how extravagant they are but a lot of the songs on here have an idea and just roll with that until the end, no bridge or anything, I guess that’s fine but it doesn’t make 5/5 songs. It’s still a masterful album but in my honest opinion not perfect
I may just not like country but like half the songs (or more) have got nothing going for them, shitty melody, lyrics and annoying vocals. Not all of them of course, I legitimately liked “can’t let go” and to a lesser extent “drunken angel” but sadly any good moments on here are far between
The length of my review accurately describes how much there’s actually to this album. not a lot.
This is one of the albums I don’t see any point to it being on the list. I mean it isn’t terrible in anyway but just by hearing one song on the album you’ve basically have got the experience of the whole album. It’s all the same.
I “respect” the hell out of this thing but my rating reflects my enjoyment
The Kinks are one of my favourite bands ever. This album has been said by critics to be the start of their golden era, but I wouldn’t fully agree. It has some amazing songs like ”Rosy won’t you please come home”, ”dandy” and of course ”Sunny afternoon” but the large majority of songs don’t stand out like they do for example in Village green or hell even the next album Something Else. It tears me up not giving a kinks album a 5 but I try to put previous listening aside and this isn’t a perfect album especially without “Dead End Street” which I think would fit perfectly and is in my opinion the best song from this time.
Did they just include every Cure album or what? this is not one of their better ones… Still Cure though.
Fine album, but it’s a bit too repetitive I can’t really remember a distinct song even after three listens but it flows really nicely so maybe that’s why.
The genres they’re mixing aren’t really mixing good example of this is ”White girl” the switch from the verse to chorus is so jarring. However that’s really the only “bad” song and many of the songs put better use to the switches in style 3/5
Basically Dinosaur jr without the cool guitar riffs, surprisingly still pretty enjoyable
The album ticks any box you could come up with for a perfect album [X] perfect songs all the way through [X] Innovative [X] Variation in the songs but still coherent [X] Impactful [X] Lyrics that actually mean shit go ahead think of another box, I’m sure this album checks it
First two songs in and I thought it was an easy one star, just garbage autotuned rock, but it actually redeemed itself with a few of the songs. On ”All These Things I’ve Done” the same effect isn’t used and it definitely improves the song same goes for “Everything Will Be Alright”. When I listen back I think almost all of the songs are really well written but ruined by the effects, this was however a successful album so I’m betting they doubled down on it
Kinda my thing, but way to plain for me to love it.
Both a fun and a heavy album, pairs well with a couple of cigarettes
Great album, anything he sings sounds intruinging. It's a bit back heavy, but man once you get to "So long marianne" it's bliss the entire way through.
When I first put it on I absolutely thought I would give it a two or less. I mean the whole thing leans heavily on his voice and guitar, both of which do not seem to be capable of the heavy lifting and songs are repeated over and over. Despite my initial reaction to this record there’s something very charming about it, by repeating a song three times it already feels on the first listen like you know the album by heart and the simplicity of the songs helps with that. The instrumentals are fantastic and help build the pretty great atmosphere that is this record. I don’t however fancy the songs all that much so while I can appreciate how well built the record is I won’t be giving it a high score
Over the top. (not in the good way)
It's an alright album, good songs. I wish it wasn't this minimalist shit though. I mean why can't you have more than two instruments at a time? why can't there be something out of pocket or new? I wouldn't want be in the studio for this, because it would be really boring. She doesn't allow herself to have any fun with it.
Not totally ruined by the 80's mixing, but partly
Tip: only start of with a really good song if the album if the record holds up to that. I only felt disappointed as the record went by instead what could have been a pleasant suprise deep in the record.
It’s hard to rate this album because I seem to share both love and disdain for it. On one hand it’s one of the most well thought out and meticulously crafted albums of all time. I mean I’ve actually put off rating it for a few days just so i can relisten to it as much as I can(11 times sofar) but I also relistened to it so many times just because I wanted to process the lingering thought that’s in the back of my head and that is that it’s really such a souless record. You hear it right at the start that shitty machine drum, like a big fuck you to the fun chaos that was their previous record and the contempt for anything not perfectly crafted for radio-ears. It goes through the whole album albeit a bit more subtle. For example: the rock song “bodysnatchers” is just there to give the old radiohead fans something to gnaw on and then the 5 different songs which are just “insert sad lyric” because it was so beloved by the media when kid a came out. It’s not perfectly crafted for the love of the music really but for the acclaim of critics, mainstream listeners and the old fans. They did that perfectly.
The dark voice really makes this record. I mean the message that he has surrendered to the lord would have been quite lame were it not for him sounding like a demon himself. And yk also because he was on the verge of death
This album is a wild ride and deeply rewarding. This is the first gem I’ve got from the project and I can see myself putting it on many times in the future. I just absolutely love that most of the songs have a completely change in tone by the end of them something that I can only remind me of parklife which is one of my all time favourites.
slow, dark and dull rock. So many bands seem to use this mantra as a magic wand to make boringly written songs sound ”deep”. I guess it somewhat works
It’s either too much and messy or completely bare bones. It’s quite infuriating
This album was made for white teenage boys who are so far away from the streets that the g-life seems intresting and more importantly cool. Luckily I’m also part of that target audiance
what a build up, just 30 minutes of pure fury to then uncover what’s behind. On my first listen I thought it was immaturity but once you listen to it once more you realise it’s just deciet.
Sounds like our current pop, altough a bit more creative and fun. If I was sure it played a part in the current pop landscape I would rate it a hell of a lot lower.
This didn't meet the expectations that have been set for it. It's quite good, but music nerds treat it like the mona lisa. They're basically just a less eccentric Talking Heads, where's the fun in that?
How come no one just told Michael to just stfu with those autistic noises
The cover is a good representation for what you're getting, shite. Half the time it sounds like fkn geometry dash
I don't think any of the songs are particulary good, but the record is so crazy that you use all your energy on trying to figure out what tf you're listening to instead of caring about quality of it.
This is the No.1 soul record to most and it has all but confirmed that I won't ever find a soul record which I enjoy. The voice which makes soul, SOUL is just annoying to me, there's too many high notes and really no character to the singing. It's very skilled but to me soul and this record loses it's personality in the process of the refining.
Painfully american.
This does feel like an album that was only included because they were girls that "made it" since it's not really extraordinary in any other way besides that. Not bad though.
Pleasantly suprised. It's not as annoying as I remember, still slightly annoying though.
I preferred when a band needed cool songs to make it cool or not. Now you just have to put on a voice, say fuck every line and wear black and bahm you're cool, easy as that.
That first song set the expectations too high
Good but I would much rather just listen to David bowie or the bealtes.
Kind of the opposite of what it's supposed to be. It's trying to act so smart but the writing just feels childish. Great singing though
