Full of bangers. First time I’ve listened to it front to back. Seeing as it was made in the 70s some of the 4 on the floor parts did give me an impression slightly of the one of the other genres in the decade ‘Disco’. This album make you want to rock out though. Head nodder.
Good album. Some moving tunes and some that I didn’t realise were S&G. Great for a Sunday Morning
Picks up a lot this album towards the end.
I wouldn’t like to listen to this album on a Sunday morning.
‘One’ by far the stand out song. From then onwards enjoyed each track.
Lars Ulrich’s snare sounds insipid throughout however. Lacks bite.
Also, there is no need for Lars Drumming under the classical guitars in the intro “To Live Is to Die” I feel it detracts from the playing.
My notes were lost.
Enjoyed a lot
Liked the acoustic punk energy. Reminded me a bit of Operation Ivy. Not going to rush back to listen again. Maybe will with Blister in the Sun. Was unaware it was these guys.
First two songs were great. A lot of hippy filler, a good blues song and a weird cockney send off.
Despite never listening really loved this album. I’m a fan of Youngs singing style and it comes to the fore in ‘Southern Man’ which is a great song that feels full of raw emotion, and given the subject it should be.
Enjoyed the singles the rest was disappointing.
Inoffensive, well produced, very 90s, unremarkable, won’t listen again.
Two really really good songs in ‘Gigantic’ and ‘Where is my Mind’ which are timeless, considering the album was made in 1988 haven’t dated. Some other good tunes on there but there is a lot of forced wackiness, proper ‘Blackadder underpants on his head - pencils up his nose - saying wibble’ tackle. The first track really annoyed me.
3 songs I really like, the title track from the closing sequence of British comedy series Extras, Father and Son and Wild World.
Everything else is ok. Again it’s easy listening and Cat/Yusuf has a very unique voice. Did I just dead name him?
Upbeat. Happy. Holiday vibes if you’re British. Made me want to dance like Paul Pogba.
Never listened to an Anthrax album. Loved this especially the thrash bit at the end of I am the Law, will listen again. It’s up my street
Firstly, I didn’t realise that R.E.M. had been around that long, secondly this album doesn’t sound like I’d expect an album from the early 80’s to sound, it sounds much more like a 90’s album, yet in the same way doesn’t feel old. I can imagine this album would have been an influence for bands that come later influencing that alternative late 80s and early 90s sound in the US.
I think the album sounds well produced and has some really good moments. I enjoyed the opening track Radio Free Europe (the only one I had previously heard), 9-9, Catapult and Shaking Through.
I will probably listen to this album again. It made the drive home on a dark winters Friday night while stuck in traffic enjoyable so it’s got something going for it.
Been Caught Stealing is doing a lot of heavy lifting for that second star.
Bit druggie. Some nice bits of guitar work. However it’s disjointed for the majority of the album. I liked the little ode to Ian Durys “Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll”
I’d heard the first track previously and enjoyed it this time. The rest of it wasn’t my cup of tea. It went off piste far too often for it to be an enjoyable listen. Struggling to think of a situation where you’d want to listen to it.
This album was alright. Enjoyed a few tracks: Barbarism Begins at Home, Nowhere Fast and What She Said. Everything else was a bit ok.
Meat is Murder has the line “and Death for no reason is MURDER”. I think that there is a reason though, delicious life sustaining food.
Not a fan. Comical in parts, racist in others. Blues for Billie Whitcloud is problematic and Montana Song is just weird.
This album is very much of its time. It’s not a vibe anymore.
Enjoyed. Some of the songs went on a bit too long
Enjoyed the album, was nice and chilled. The tracks were well produced and some of the music really was clever like at the start of “Say Something Loving” where the vocals/piano went in to a short loop merging with the guitar really made me smile.
Other than that it got a bit ‘samey’ towards the end and I wouldn’t say it was outstanding.
I listened to this album whilst driving to work. It was -2.5°C outside and foggy. This wasn’t the environment where I think would be best suited to listening. However, to my surprise it helped warm my mood this morning (aided by the car heaters), the album evokes memories of holidays in sunnier climbs, from of which coincidentally I have just returned (although not to Spain), so it puts you in that mindset. This was a nice tonic on my first journey in to work since my holiday.
I really liked the music and will be returning to it again, to supplement my Spanish lessons.
In to this. It’s great. Listened to about 4 discs and there wasn’t a bad song. I like this music and the era. I will stick it on again. Would be nice on a Sunday.
Fell asleep listening to this. Enjoy Björks voice, she is creative with it, this album has an ASMR quality to it. It’s jarring in some places but generally enjoyable.
Best album I’ve had to rate so far. Not a bad song on it. It has the hits on it “War Pigs”, “Paranoid”, “Iron Man” and every other track is well crafted. It’s the original Stoner Rock, you can hear the influence bands like QOTSA get from this album in songs like “Planet Caravan”.
Not a fan. Not an album to sit down and relax listening to. Cant think of a situation where putting this album on to enjoy would be merited. It could be used to punish someone you dislike/need to break in a situation where they were forced to listen to it.
80s New Romantic music reminds me of my childhood. Enjoyed this album front to back. The singles are great and still stand up.
Wasn’t the best
So, I’ve liked this Prince album. The problem is I think the recording sounds shit. Which is mad for someone who is a supposed prolific writer and recording artist, I think he’s just shit at production. I hate the really clipped reverb/delay he has on his voice, which I suppose is his trademark, just makes the recordings sound a bit fuzzy. Also, some of the tunes end with dark undertones like when the woman calling for the police or the kid is asking why does everyone have a bomb at the end of 1999, I reckon he was a proper wrongun. The lines “I want to fuck the taste out of your mouth” and “(Yes, we're certain of it, he's definitely masturbating)” solidified this opinion. Not a bad album, room for improvement.
Unlistenable.
Really fun album. Smiled a few times throughout and really enjoyed the hits off this one
When I first started listening to this album I got the feeling that John was purposefully trying not to sing properly, like going out of his way not to enunciate. I was surprised to find out he’s Scottish….then twigged this guy is probably in some way responsible for influencing his fellow countryman’s style Paolo Nutini singing style, something that’s always irked me. Then I can see in Apple Music that this album is Feautied on a Paolo Nutini influences album and it validates my thinking. The music is alright. For helping solve a mystery that’s bugged me in the past it gets 2 stars.
Was ok in parts. Overall not massively impressed
