All That You Can't Leave Behind
U2
I never understood the appeal of U2 and this record did not help convince me. Even when a song starts to sound like it could be good, Bono comes on and ruins it. The dude sounds like shit.
Best songs on it were just ok. Beautiful Day, Wild Honey, When I Look at the World and The Ground Beneath her Feet are the best moments but none of them are particularly great. Not a terrible listen though and I might favorite one or two of them to come back to.

Is This It
The Strokes
Probably one of the greatest alternative records of all time.
I truly am envious of anyone who hasn’t listened to this and gets to listen to it for the first time. From the first notes of the first song, it’s catchy, fun and innovative. Genre defining, era defining.. I don’t have enough praise for this album.
Top tracks are Is This It, Soma, Someday, Last Nite and Hard to Explain but truly every single song on here is incredible

Sticky Fingers
The Rolling Stones
I’ve always had a lot of respect for the stones even though I never grew up listening to them and only know a handful of their songs. This record is such a vibe and I could see how if this came into your life at the right time how it could dominate you completely.
Such a great sound: moody, catchy and unafraid to stretch out. I had heard Wild Horses before and always liked it but when surrounded by all the other songs on this record it especially shines. The A-side of this is superb from start to finish.
Highlights for me are Brown Sugar, Sway, Wild Horses and the absolutely epic Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.

2112
Rush
Another album that I’ve always loved and an absolute icon of progressive rock. The titular track (and entire A-side of the record) is incredible and doesn’t overstay a moment of its 20+ minute runtime.
The B-side has always been interesting to me because it’s so hard to add songs to an album that seems to have already said everything it wants to say. Does Passage to Bangkok really add anything or even relate to 2112? No, probably not but it fucking rocks and is one of my favorite Rush songs. I don’t think it’s a perfectly balanced record but it’s an iconic one and I was so happy to revisit it.
Best tracks are 2112 (obviously), Passage to Bangkok and Something for Nothing

Coat Of Many Colors
Dolly Parton
I was criminally late to country music and I feel like it’s because records like this one weren’t being played where I was growing up. Dolly is mesmerizing and this record is a delight from start to finish.
Some moments are slow and melancholic, some are upbeat and invigorating. Either way, Dolly’s voice shines at every corner and the song writing is earnest and full of heart.
Highlights include Coat of Many Colors, She Never Met a Man, Early Morning Breeze, A Better Place to Live. But every song is delightful in its own way and those picks are just based on the current first pass

Ramones
Ramones
The Ramones record is just ok. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who can actually understand what Joey Ramone is actually saying in any of these songs, both because he’s slurring all his words together and his lyrics genuinely don’t make any sense.
After a while, all the songs start to really resemble one another and it’s hard to tell where one song ends and another one begins. That said, maybe because they’re so simple sounding, the record is very enjoyable. Lots of energy to carry you through and song genuinely fun moments if you’re willing to go along for the ride.
Blitzkrieg Bop is the only song that stuck out to me ALTHOUGH there are lots of hilarious moments where one song ends and another begins that sounds exactly like the previous song. Loudmouth into Havana Affair for example… like did they track this record like that on purpose?? Either way it’s a pretty enjoyable record to have on

School's Out
Alice Cooper
Holy shit what a ride. I think there was a moment about halfway through the record when I thought Apple Music had fucked up and accidentally shuffled to Kansas or Genesis. Then I was listening to The Doors or Joni Mitchell. Then back to Alice Cooper. This album is a trip and absolutely took me by surprise.
Does it nail every moment? No, there are some choruses or songs that felt a bit more chaotic than enjoyable. But overall it fucking rocks and the instrumentation as well as Alice Cooper’s vocals are excellent.
Highlights are School’s Out, Blue Turk and Public Animal #9. Listen to this record.

Beyond Skin
Nitin Sawhney
First record that I had never heard of and this was an odd one. All very ambient, vibey music. The kind of record you would listen to if you were at a trendy European cafe in the early 2000s. Or the kind of music you would hear at the beginning of a Pierce Brosnan Bond movie.
Not that it’s bad per se but it’s very ambient and tough to listen to without having your mind wander elsewhere. There are also these moments where they’ll randomly have news clips about India having a nuclear program which makes me think there’s a political back story to this one?? Maybe… but if you ever wanted to listen to a safer Björk record this is a pretty decent one to listen to.
Stand out tracks for me include Tides and that’s about it.

OutKast
I love this record. I don’t think that I ever get tired of Andre 3000 doing just about anything and he has so many incredible moments on this album. Even with the lyrics in front of me I don’t think I’m physically capable of recreating his flow and what he’s able to do.
Also despite its 24 tracks, it goes by really quickly and doesn’t feel bloated at all. There are a couple of skits and extended outros that perhaps aren’t super exciting but still help create a world that’s fun to live in for the 1h20 this album takes up.
ATLiens for life but this most likely their best record.
Favorite tracks are So Fresh, So Clean, Ms Jackson, B.O.B, Humble Mumble and Gansta Shit.

Parallel Lines
Blondie
This album gets carried by Heart of Glass (which might actually be the greatest song of all time).
Listening to this record can be summed up as waiting for Heart of Glass, listening to Heart of Glass and wishing Heart of Glass was playing again. Everything else is filler. This album could be a single.
Favorite tracks include Heart of Glass.

Cupid & Psyche 85
Scritti Politti
Yet another record I’d never heard of but the gist of it is imagine if the most 80s sounding record was made by an Italian but all in English.
There’s a quote from GTA Vice City on one of the radio stations that says “we’ll tell you what’s good and play it until you like it”. This album made me realize that a lot of the 80s music that has stood the test of time might just be popular because we decided it was. Granted I don’t think this was as good as say Tears for Fears or David Bowie but damn this better than some of those Phil Collin’s records.
Overall no songs really jumped out at me but it’s not a terrible listen.

Surf's Up
The Beach Boys
Prefacing this by saying I love The Beach Boys and they are, in my opinion, the greatest American band of all time. Brian Wilson is a generational talent and a musical mind that will never be replicated.
Dick sucking aside, this is a great record. It blends genres but keeps a lot of the harmonies and pop sensibilities that make The Beach Boys so fun to listen to. I hesitate to call this record more mature than some of their 60s records but maybe it’s more refined?? It’s less psychedelic and more structured maybe? Either way we are well past some of the wackiness of Pet Sounds and cherry picking a lot of what makes them so fun to listen to.
Favorite tracks include Long Promised Road, Feel Flows, ‘Til I Die and Surf’s Up (a track recorded during the Smile sessions I’m pretty sure because it was the only one I’d heard before)

Jazz Samba
Stan Getz
This is an amazing record. Once I finished it, I let it loop back around for a 2nd listen and enjoyed it even more than the first time. It’s beautiful on every level and there’s real joy in listening to just one instrument on each pass to see what’s going on in that corner of the song.
There’s not much I want to say because I think you should all listen to this album immediately; it’s only 35 minutes long and I challenge you to get halfway through Desafindo and not be hooked.
Favorite songs are Desafinado, Samba Dees Days and Samba De Uma Nota So but every single track is fantastic.

Green River
Creedence Clearwater Revival
It’s so hard not to love this album. CCR’s sound is so distinct and iconic that it’s really an all or nothing proposition and I’m all in personally.
The coarse vocals and soaring guitars are pure rock and I thought this album is a great smattering of songs that gives you a clear idea of what CCR is all about. At 29 minutes long, it’s almost a bit too short for my liking but enjoyable all the way through.
Favorite songs include Green River and Bad Moon Rising

Interesting record. Production is fun and very emblematic. Lyrically I felt like the social justice and social commentary was a little too on the nose and felt corporate. Not my favorite Janet record but not too bad
