1999 by Prince

Feels "of its time" / "of times to come". It feels difficult to evaluate it from a modern perspective; the techniques it uses seem overly simple, but that is with decades of retrospect.

I understand it is historically and culturally significant, but it's not for me. For all these songs, there are components I think are good. Ray and the backing chorus have great voices, of course. Instruments are also played well. The technique itself seems fine, but the substance being delivered by that technique does not hit the mark at times. Slower pacing and less variation in style/intonation can make for monotonous listening. There are some songs that introduce more instruments, are more fast-paced, or have more interesting/jazzy elements. These feel like breaths of fresh air, but having reprieves from monotony does not save the whole album. For subsequent listenings - assuming I'm targeting enjoyability - I would probably cut it down to a subset with the more interesting gems. Unless/until I get a better appreciation for the historical progression of music, I don't think I'd get much out of the remainder.

Maybe 4.5/5

american dream by LCD Soundsystem
Jan 22 2026

Maybe 3.5/5. It could grow on me with re-listens.

Fever To Tell by Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Jan 23 2026

Great stuff. Has that early 2000s feel to it. Evokes the feeling of a start screen for a skating/racing video game from the era. Probably not everyone's cup of tea; it's "stupid", but in a fun and genuine way.

Loveless by My Bloody Valentine
Jan 25 2026

Worth a re-visit.

Smash by The Offspring
Jan 27 2026

Good, if you are in the mood for something out of a skate/snowboard video game from the 2000s. Not bad, but you need to be in the mood for that sort of experience. Between 2 and 4 depending on context, so I'm splitting the difference with 3.

Getz/Gilberto by Stan Getz
Jan 29 2026

It's classic bossa nova. 4.5/5 if you are in the mood for it.

Heavy Weather by Weather Report
Feb 02 2026

Electronic jazz goes bleep bloop.

Aftermath by The Rolling Stones
Feb 03 2026

Meh. Does have Paint it Black, tho.

Group Sex by Circle Jerks
Feb 04 2026

I appreciate it as an extreme in rawness and brevity. I don't mind the brevity, but it is a bit too raw for my tastes.

Pornography by The Cure
Feb 06 2026

Moody. Dark. Maybe 3.5
