My first 1001 album review starting of with a banger. Having been a bit of a nirvana fan prior to listening this live album I had an idea of what I was getting into, I also already had a couple songs saved to my likes. That being said it is not much of a surprise that I liked this album however there were a couple songs that they covered which I had not heard before, but I felt are well suited to nirvanas style so enjoyed listening to them as well.
I normally don’t particularly like live albums but this one I really enjoyed, what I did like is the raw sound of Kurt’s voice where you can really hear the emotion alongside the instruments, the recording is also super crisp which I think factors to my positive review. The songs from the album transition so smoothly into one another but that’s presumably because the recording was done all on one go, I rate it as personally I love that continuous sound.
Standout song for me is definitely ‘The man who sold the world’ the gritty guitar riff is just amazing and I am considering buying the vinyl for this album.
I tend to listen to a range of music genres but even though I know and like some of the big Beatle’s songs I have never actually listen to a whole album of theirs before. I did like this album there is some nice songs in here for sure standouts to me being ‘im happy just to dance with you’, ‘and I love her’ and ‘can’t buy me love’.
I can definitely appreciate and respect what the Beatles have done from listening to this album as well as hearing what others say about them. However, this album was just good for me not great, an enjoyable listen yes but not life changing.
I thought it was a decent album wasn’t the biggest fan of a couple songs on there but majority were fairly good, standouts being ‘Time of the season’ (of course), ‘Beechwood park’ and ‘I want her she wants me’. Its typical psychedelic 60s pop/rock so you can sort of guess what sound you’re going to get. Not much to really say on it it’s a average album with a few decent tunes on there, I do however love the album cover art!
In parts quite electronic sounding rock and usually I'm not a massive fan of really electronic sounds but this was pretty decent it had a good blend and didn’t complety over do it in all the songs. I'd say a nice little range of moods all with an underlying cowboy/western theme from the songs, which I think is a good thing when you can actually distinguish songs in an album. Got sort of radiohead vibes but slightly toned down. Standout songs 'supermassive black hole' (twilight iyk yk😂) , 'exo-politics' and maybe 'knights of cydonia'
A very solid 3 stars, nearly 4 stars.
A quality 4-star album just not quite 5 for me because there were 1 or 2 songs that I just wasn’t too fond of but overall, I enjoyed listening to this album. My standout songs are basic picks, but they are ‘scar tissue’, ‘otherside’, and ‘Californication’, I feel like that more slightly mellow rock sound really suits RHCP and my feeling towards this is backed by ‘this velvet glove’ which honestly is another favourite from the album. In addition, other songs from RHCP which I like again, have that similar more mellow rock sound.
I still enjoyed a lot of the other songs on this album, they come with a fast and punchy sound exactly what you might expect from RHCP, the instrumentals from the drums and guitars are the highlights of these songs for me. I appreciate the mixed mood of songs on the album which help to bring in some definition and range, I would also add that quixoticelixer is an underrated song if you listen to the deluxe version of Californication.
Definitely a worthy addition to 1001 albums.
Ya dad's favourite rock band
3 stars for me on the higher end of 3 stars though, because it did sound a little generic however you know what I really did actually enjoy listening to it and at the end of that's what matters not so much how technical it is. Standouts songs, 'twice as hard' , 'she talks to angels' and 'stare it cold'.
Classic rock sound, fuck yeh 🤟
Spacemen 3 really is a very fitting name for this group because I think you must be an alien to genuinely enjoy the album👽(or really really high)
I get some music can be an art and theres spiritual music out there, but this was a tough listen at points, I really did try to go in open minded but you know it's really not for me. An Interesting listen and a very unique sound but it's a 1 star from me. Usually I'll pick out standout songs for reviews but the only song I could sort of enjoy was 'May the circle be unbroken'
A very cool and interesting listening experience, Radiohead do very good job of creating this atmospheric music. I feel like this album would make a killer soundtrack for a sci-fi type of film. One or two of the instrumental tracks I wasn’t really a fan of too much and I feel like they still could benefit from some vocals. The overall mood created is quite sombre, but it’s very well done, again Radiohead really excel in this field, the production quality of the sound is insane, super crisp and well built.
Most of the songs to me feel like an outro song to the end of a movie or a TV series, which is great as music pieces/scores but unfortunately, I can’t really see myself listening to many of the songs again unless I’m in a very specific mood. Standout songs ‘pyramid song’ and ‘knives out’ I would rate on the higher end of 3 stars 100% but just not quite a 4 for me because I am unlikely to re-listen.
Such an 80s sound to this one felt like id travelled back in time listening to it, I did however like a few of the songs on here. Some nice guitar instrumentals with those iconic funky 80s sound effects dropped in here and there. In some of the songs you can hear a little bit of influence from joy division. A fun album to listen to but it didn’t feel like it was anything super special, standout songs for me were ‘All the way’, ‘Guilty partner’ and ‘Dream attack’.
This wasn’t a bad listen but for me it just felt a bit boring, I think if you were to listen to some of the songs by themselves then they can have their moment but in a full album of songs where they all sort of sound the same it gets a bit repetitive. Also, as the songs have a lower tone to them, when complied together the album can become a bit dreary. The production was good and I feel like The National could have made more from this album with some variations of mood in the songs, with all that being said my favourite song was ‘Anyone’s Ghost’ and my rating is a high end 2 star.
An album from an artist I hadn’t heard of (which I feel like I should of), but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the album and all its songs. This is the sort of thing I was expecting and hoping to get from 1001 albums, a pleasant surprise. When listening to the first song I could tell that that this album had potential, the album just felt like a classic (even not knowing until today) it had this familiar comforting sound. I think this sound is achieved through its intimate feeling, feed by the piano lead compositions, soulful vocals and warm guitar notes combination.
The mood of the most songs are similar and follow a folk-rock sound but they were some different ones here and there with a faster tempo and a blend of Motown in them, which all together in the album made an enjoyable listen. I think this album’s success comes from the fact it’s not trying to do too much, it’s some good old vocals, instrumentals from piano and guitar mixed together, a simple but good recipe for a quality album. Standout songs for me were ‘I feel the earth move’ and ‘it’s too late’, I feel like I will add this to my vinyl collection and a rate a solid 4 stars.
Early heavy rock/metal sound, some good listens on a few of the songs but some of the other ones were not as good as a listen if I’m being honest. The not so good ones just felt quite random like it was the band just messing about rather than an actual written song. Certain parts of songs when they were good, they were GOOD but then there were other parts in the same song which just weren’t for me. Sometimes in these songs I liked I felt the instrumentals went on for slightly too long killing the momentum of the song. I feel like if the songs were more refined and slightly condensed it would improve it for me.
The good parts, I mean some fantastic guitar riffs, especially for its time it's impressive and well done. However, whilst the instrumentals are the focus and the highlight here I feel like the lyrics still could have provided a bit more substance as they were very simple and repetitive in parts. That’s why my standout songs selections are ‘Smoke on the water’, ‘Highway star’ and ‘When a blind man cries’ as they appear a little more refined and less random. Whilst this sounds like an overly negative review, on the whole I did like listening to this album and think it is iconic so a worthy addition to 1001 albums but for me it only just scrapes its way into the 4-star bracket.
It's a prime black Michael Jackson album, you have to be boring not to like it I'm sorry. I feel like this was his first hugely successful solo album and you can see why. There's some proper funky tunes in here you can't help but have a little boogie to whilst listening but, there is also some more heartfelt songs as well.
I really do think it's a great album with a range of songs, first half is better than the second I feel like maybe the order of the songs could be shuffled a bit. Regardless I think this is a really fun and emotional album that's why it just pushes into the 5 star band for me. It was really refreshing to get a change from rock as well which is what I've had so far, standout songs 'rock with you' , 'dont stop till you get enough' and 'it's the falling in love'
Classic and iconic 80s glam rock/pop sound with some huge hits on this album, so no surprises standout songs being, ‘You give love a bad name’, ’Livin’ on a prayer’ and ‘Wanted dead or alive, I think dead or alive is my favourite on the album. These songs do the heavy lifting on the album, but I think that’s because it tends to be the ones you know contributing the liking of songs. I think the other songs on the album are good maybe some had the potential to be one of the hit songs but that’s just how things go. The album is a fun and enjoyable listen perhaps not a musical piece of art but a great listen regardless.
Yeah, decent album. I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it, was a decent listen. Orange crush was the standout song for me, just the album overall felt a little bit boring maybe I'm missing stuff idk. Low end of 3 stars for me.
I’m not sure what the likelihood of me listening to this album again or its songs is, however I did enjoy listening to it whilst working my way through 1001 albums, it’s a nice break from all the rock. I feel like this music can certainly have its moment if you’re doing the salsa, samba or somewhere in a South American jazz café watching a live performance but I feel its energy is lost when you’re sat at a desk at work, drawing up a fire strategy plan. It’s not bad music and probably is pretty decent but it is very moment specific in my opinion. I do like a bit of jazz but more New Orleans sort of style rather than this more dance type, standout songs however were ‘Frenzy’, ‘Blues a la machito’ and ‘conversation’.
First Janet Jackson album a decent listen, a sort of politically aware album at points, in some of the songs focusing on some issues that were perhaps prevalent at the time? I did feel like a lot of the songs sounded the same, just very similar beats and vocals/lyrics, they weren’t bad but just became slightly repetitive. The first half was more upbeat, and the second half was a slower more emotional tone maybe if the two main moods had been mixed together in the album it could have broken up the sounds. Standout songs ‘Ryhthm nation’, ‘black cat’ and ‘state of the world’. A decent album for sure but just nothing too special.
Mum, can we have Oasis?
Mum: No there is Oasis at home
The ‘Oasis’ at home: [insert this album]
Just a joke but there were a few songs which did sort of sound like they were ripping off Oasis’ sound. An alright listen and I didn’t completely hate listening to this album just felt quite meh. I do think however, that the instrumentals in all fairness were actually quite good, but I just really wasn’t a fan of the vocals and lowkey just gave me a headache. I do like the album cover though and was maybe expecting more of a folk sound paired with more acoustic guitar riffs and some good vocals, so was bit disappointed. Standout songs idk ‘pull together’ maybe, I would include ‘Daniella’ but only the instrumental.
What can I say, I'm very partial to some mototown and this is a quality litte album. it's a nice short length I feel like any longer it would lose its energy. It's easy listening so no real complaints, will maybe listen to some of the songs in the future.
Not necessarily a bad listen, I just lowkey just did not give a shit about this album. Some tracks as individual songs yeah fairly decent like Heroine. However, all the songs together just sounds the same and the album honestly just felt like a bit of a slog to get through. Did not need to listen to this before I die.
I feel like some of these 60s pop/rock ‘Beatle’ type albums can either be hit or miss and for me it was a hit. Most of the songs I suppose were fairly simple, but I enjoyed listening to them and was a nice surprise, dare I say this album is a little bit of a hidden gem. Standout songs ‘kicks’, and ‘ballard of a useless man’ and ‘I’m not your stepping stone’ I didn’t necessarily feel like there was a bad song from this album, it’s not groundbreaking but a good listen, I was confused why they randomly had one song sung in Italian, but it was still decent. Might not be for everyone but I rate this album and was a fun listen, its great if you want that 60s rock sound. I would probably listen to some of the songs again and maybe the album, but I feel like it performed well enough for me to just push it into the 4-star bracket.
I only knew the big Rolling stones songs before today including ‘sympathy for the devil’ but I have never actually listened to a whole album of theirs before. I hadn’t appreciated how much of a blues/folk rock sound they have; I liked listening to this album though. The sound is very raw and acoustic, but I think it works as you can feel a bit more of the soul from it. Some other standout songs are ‘No expectations’ and ‘Salt of the earth’ a good range of moods in the songs from the album, I’d say a decent 4-star album.
I was NOT expecting a Lana Del Rey album on this 1001 list, so I am very surprised. I have always grouped her into a ‘basic white girl’ music artist which I still stand by, but I will say she is a in a higher calibre compared with others in this category. To start the piano and guitar instrumentals are quality, after listening to mainly older albums from 1001 you can really appreciate the production and sound quality of modern music. The sound is very slow, sombre and deep sounding album with a soft textured but powerful voice making a nice harmony.
However, it did start to become a little bit samey sounding, I think it’s all good tracks to listen to but due to their slow tempo it’s quite soothing which was lowkey putting me to sleep. Whole thing felt like one big lullaby but in a nice way, there’s this classical felling to the sound. As musical art I think it’s great, as music that I would listen to on the regular not so much the as the mood is very sombre and sorrowful so I feel like I would need to be in that sort of mood to connect with the music and actually want to listen to it.
I wasn’t a fan of the whispering type signing in the first song it just sounded off to me but standout songs I would say perhaps, ‘Wild at heart’, ‘Dark but just a game’ and ‘Dance till we die’.
God awful haircuts but they can make a decent little tune, some proper toe-tappers. Off the bat I was very surprised by ‘save the life of my child’ it did not sound right on this album and weirdly ahead of its time, personally wasn’t really a fan of it though. The first half of the album was alright, but the second half was quite strong. Standout songs ‘America’, ‘Mrs Robinson’ and ‘Hazy shade of winter’. I can understand why people would not like S&G because it does sound a little corny, but I think it’s a good corny, the songs are just quite jolly and catchy. Debating whether this is a 3 or 4 star album, 2 quite good songs on here but looking at the album overall I would say it isn’t enough for a 4 so a high 3-star it is from me.
My sweet Lord a 2hr album! ‘All things must pass’ and eventually this album does because 2hrs is just unnecessary. For me an album should never really be surpassing 1hr by much. Overall, it was a pretty decent listen but just quite unforgettable only standout songs ‘Beware of darkness 1st version’, ‘Art of dying’ and of course ‘My sweet lord’.
My sweet lord really is a fantastic song, and I expected this album to bring that same sort of calibre for a few more songs. I have noticed that with 1001 they will include an album which has 1 big hit on it rather than the whole album perhaps being worthy of actually being on this list. Giving a mid 3 star as there were a good few nice listens on here but in conclusion it’s just an average album for me. Maybe if it was shortend and better curated it could climb higher.
You know what, I actually really enjoyed listening to this album, I never normally like live albums but this one was quite good. Still think there doesn’t need to be as much cheering in the audio after songs but hey ho. Im sorry but Johnny Cash was that guy, I feel like he just was. I knew a few of his songs before today, walk the line being the only one I knew prior to listening to this album. However, I feel like I did enjoy listening to all the tracks, the overall performance was simple but very entertaining. A very charismatic performer, the songs make you feel like a cowboy roaming the wild west and who doesn’t want to be that. Standout songs ‘walk the line’, ‘a boy named sue’ and ‘San quentin’.
