My first 1001 album review starting of with a banger. Having been a bit of a nirvana fan prior to listening this live album I had an idea of what I was getting into, I also already had a couple songs saved to my likes. That being said it is not much of a surprise that I liked this album however there were a couple songs that they covered which I had not heard before, but I felt are well suited to nirvanas style so enjoyed listening to them as well.
I normally don’t particularly like live albums but this one I really enjoyed, what I did like is the raw sound of Kurt’s voice where you can really hear the emotion alongside the instruments, the recording is also super crisp which I think factors to my positive review. The songs from the album transition so smoothly into one another but that’s presumably because the recording was done all on one go, I rate it as personally I love that continuous sound.
Standout song for me is definitely ‘The man who sold the world’ the gritty guitar riff is just amazing and I am considering buying the vinyl for this album.
I tend to listen to a range of music genres but even though I know and like some of the big Beatle’s songs I have never actually listen to a whole album of theirs before. I did like this album there is some nice songs in here for sure standouts to me being ‘im happy just to dance with you’, ‘and I love her’ and ‘can’t buy me love’.
I can definitely appreciate and respect what the Beatles have done from listening to this album as well as hearing what others say about them. However, this album was just good for me not great, an enjoyable listen yes but not life changing.
I thought it was a decent album wasn’t the biggest fan of a couple songs on there but majority were fairly good, standouts being ‘Time of the season’ (of course), ‘Beechwood park’ and ‘I want her she wants me’. Its typical psychedelic 60s pop/rock so you can sort of guess what sound you’re going to get. Not much to really say on it it’s a average album with a few decent tunes on there, I do however love the album cover art!
In parts quite electronic sounding rock and usually I'm not a massive fan of really electronic sounds but this was pretty decent it had a good blend and didn’t complety over do it in all the songs. I'd say a nice little range of moods all with an underlying cowboy/western theme from the songs, which I think is a good thing when you can actually distinguish songs in an album. Got sort of radiohead vibes but slightly toned down. Standout songs 'supermassive black hole' (twilight iyk yk😂) , 'exo-politics' and maybe 'knights of cydonia'
A very solid 3 stars, nearly 4 stars.
A quality 4-star album just not quite 5 for me because there were 1 or 2 songs that I just wasn’t too fond of but overall, I enjoyed listening to this album. My standout songs are basic picks, but they are ‘scar tissue’, ‘otherside’, and ‘Californication’, I feel like that more slightly mellow rock sound really suits RHCP and my feeling towards this is backed by ‘this velvet glove’ which honestly is another favourite from the album. In addition, other songs from RHCP which I like again, have that similar more mellow rock sound.
I still enjoyed a lot of the other songs on this album, they come with a fast and punchy sound exactly what you might expect from RHCP, the instrumentals from the drums and guitars are the highlights of these songs for me. I appreciate the mixed mood of songs on the album which help to bring in some definition and range, I would also add that quixoticelixer is an underrated song if you listen to the deluxe version of Californication.
Definitely a worthy addition to 1001 albums.
Ya dad's favourite rock band
3 stars for me on the higher end of 3 stars though, because it did sound a little generic however you know what I really did actually enjoy listening to it and at the end of that's what matters not so much how technical it is. Standouts songs, 'twice as hard' , 'she talks to angels' and 'stare it cold'.
Classic rock sound, fuck yeh 🤟
Spacemen 3 really is a very fitting name for this group because I think you must be an alien to genuinely enjoy the album👽(or really really high)
I get some music can be an art and theres spiritual music out there, but this was a tough listen at points, I really did try to go in open minded but you know it's really not for me. An Interesting listen and a very unique sound but it's a 1 star from me. Usually I'll pick out standout songs for reviews but the only song I could sort of enjoy was 'May the circle be unbroken'
A very cool and interesting listening experience, Radiohead do very good job of creating this atmospheric music. I feel like this album would make a killer soundtrack for a sci-fi type of film. One or two of the instrumental tracks I wasn’t really a fan of too much and I feel like they still could benefit from some vocals. The overall mood created is quite sombre, but it’s very well done, again Radiohead really excel in this field, the production quality of the sound is insane, super crisp and well built.
Most of the songs to me feel like an outro song to the end of a movie or a TV series, which is great as music pieces/scores but unfortunately, I can’t really see myself listening to many of the songs again unless I’m in a very specific mood. Standout songs ‘pyramid song’ and ‘knives out’ I would rate on the higher end of 3 stars 100% but just not quite a 4 for me because I am unlikely to re-listen.
Such an 80s sound to this one felt like id travelled back in time listening to it, I did however like a few of the songs on here. Some nice guitar instrumentals with those iconic funky 80s sound effects dropped in here and there. In some of the songs you can hear a little bit of influence from joy division. A fun album to listen to but it didn’t feel like it was anything super special, standout songs for me were ‘All the way’, ‘Guilty partner’ and ‘Dream attack’.
This wasn’t a bad listen but for me it just felt a bit boring, I think if you were to listen to some of the songs by themselves then they can have their moment but in a full album of songs where they all sort of sound the same it gets a bit repetitive. Also, as the songs have a lower tone to them, when complied together the album can become a bit dreary. The production was good and I feel like The National could have made more from this album with some variations of mood in the songs, with all that being said my favourite song was ‘Anyone’s Ghost’ and my rating is a high end 2 star.
An album from an artist I hadn’t heard of (which I feel like I should of), but I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the album and all its songs. This is the sort of thing I was expecting and hoping to get from 1001 albums, a pleasant surprise. When listening to the first song I could tell that that this album had potential, the album just felt like a classic (even not knowing until today) it had this familiar comforting sound. I think this sound is achieved through its intimate feeling, feed by the piano lead compositions, soulful vocals and warm guitar notes combination.
The mood of the most songs are similar and follow a folk-rock sound but they were some different ones here and there with a faster tempo and a blend of Motown in them, which all together in the album made an enjoyable listen. I think this album’s success comes from the fact it’s not trying to do too much, it’s some good old vocals, instrumentals from piano and guitar mixed together, a simple but good recipe for a quality album. Standout songs for me were ‘I feel the earth move’ and ‘it’s too late’, I feel like I will add this to my vinyl collection and a rate a solid 4 stars.
Early heavy rock/metal sound, some good listens on a few of the songs but some of the other ones were not as good as a listen if I’m being honest. The not so good ones just felt quite random like it was the band just messing about rather than an actual written song. Certain parts of songs when they were good, they were GOOD but then there were other parts in the same song which just weren’t for me. Sometimes in these songs I liked I felt the instrumentals went on for slightly too long killing the momentum of the song. I feel like if the songs were more refined and slightly condensed it would improve it for me.
The good parts, I mean some fantastic guitar riffs, especially for its time it's impressive and well done. However, whilst the instrumentals are the focus and the highlight here I feel like the lyrics still could have provided a bit more substance as they were very simple and repetitive in parts. That’s why my standout songs selections are ‘Smoke on the water’, ‘Highway star’ and ‘When a blind man cries’ as they appear a little more refined and less random. Whilst this sounds like an overly negative review, on the whole I did like listening to this album and think it is iconic so a worthy addition to 1001 albums but for me it only just scrapes its way into the 4-star bracket.
It's a prime black Michael Jackson album, you have to be boring not to like it I'm sorry. I feel like this was his first hugely successful solo album and you can see why. There's some proper funky tunes in here you can't help but have a little boogie to whilst listening but, there is also some more heartfelt songs as well.
I really do think it's a great album with a range of songs, first half is better than the second I feel like maybe the order of the songs could be shuffled a bit. Regardless I think this is a really fun and emotional album. It was really refreshing to get a change from rock as well which is what I've had so far, standout songs 'rock with you' , 'dont stop till you get enough' and 'it's the falling in love'
Classic and iconic 80s glam rock/pop sound with some huge hits on this album, so no surprises standout songs being, ‘You give love a bad name’, ’Livin’ on a prayer’ and ‘Wanted dead or alive, I think dead or alive is my favourite on the album. These songs do the heavy lifting on the album, but I think that’s because it tends to be the ones you know contributing the liking of songs. I think the other songs on the album are good maybe some had the potential to be one of the hit songs but that’s just how things go. The album is a fun and enjoyable listen perhaps not a musical piece of art but a great listen regardless.
Yeah, decent album. I didn’t hate it but didn’t love it, was a decent listen. Orange crush was the standout song for me, just the album overall felt a little bit boring maybe I'm missing stuff idk. Low end of 3 stars for me.
I’m not sure what the likelihood of me listening to this album again or its songs is, however I did enjoy listening to it whilst working my way through 1001 albums, it’s a nice break from all the rock. I feel like this music can certainly have its moment if you’re doing the salsa, samba or somewhere in a South American jazz café watching a live performance but I feel its energy is lost when you’re sat at a desk at work, drawing up a fire strategy plan. It’s not bad music and probably is pretty decent but it is very moment specific in my opinion. I do like a bit of jazz but more New Orleans sort of style rather than this more dance type, standout songs however were ‘Frenzy’, ‘Blues a la machito’ and ‘conversation’.
First Janet Jackson album a decent listen, a sort of politically aware album at points, in some of the songs focusing on some issues that were perhaps prevalent at the time? I did feel like a lot of the songs sounded the same, just very similar beats and vocals/lyrics, they weren’t bad but just became slightly repetitive. The first half was more upbeat, and the second half was a slower more emotional tone maybe if the two main moods had been mixed together in the album it could have broken up the sounds. Standout songs ‘Ryhthm nation’, ‘black cat’ and ‘state of the world’. A decent album for sure but just nothing too special.
Mum, can we have Oasis?
Mum: No there is Oasis at home
The ‘Oasis’ at home: [insert this album]
Just a joke but there were a few songs which did sort of sound like they were ripping off Oasis’ sound. An alright listen and I didn’t completely hate listening to this album just felt quite meh. I do think however, that the instrumentals in all fairness were actually quite good, but I just really wasn’t a fan of the vocals and lowkey just gave me a headache. I do like the album cover though and was maybe expecting more of a folk sound paired with more acoustic guitar riffs and some good vocals, so was bit disappointed. Standout songs idk ‘pull together’ maybe, I would include ‘Daniella’ but only the instrumental.
What can I say, I'm very partial to some mototown and this is a quality litte album. it's a nice short length I feel like any longer it would lose its energy. It's easy listening so no real complaints, will maybe listen to some of the songs in the future.
Not necessarily a bad listen, I just lowkey just did not give a shit about this album. Some tracks as individual songs yeah fairly decent like Heroine. However, all the songs together just sounds the same and the album honestly just felt like a bit of a slog to get through. Did not need to listen to this before I die.
I feel like some of these 60s pop/rock ‘Beatle’ type albums can either be hit or miss and for me it was a hit. Most of the songs I suppose were fairly simple, but I enjoyed listening to them and was a nice surprise, dare I say this album is a little bit of a hidden gem. Standout songs ‘kicks’, and ‘ballard of a useless man’ and ‘I’m not your stepping stone’ I didn’t necessarily feel like there was a bad song from this album, it’s not groundbreaking but a good listen, I was confused why they randomly had one song sung in Italian, but it was still decent. Might not be for everyone but I rate this album and was a fun listen, its great if you want that 60s rock sound. I would probably listen to some of the songs again and maybe the album, but I feel like it performed well enough for me to just push it into the 4-star bracket.
I only knew the big Rolling stones songs before today including ‘sympathy for the devil’ but I have never actually listened to a whole album of theirs before. I hadn’t appreciated how much of a blues/folk rock sound they have; I liked listening to this album though. The sound is very raw and acoustic, but I think it works as you can feel a bit more of the soul from it. Some other standout songs are ‘No expectations’ and ‘Salt of the earth’ a good range of moods in the songs from the album, I’d say a decent 4-star album.
I was NOT expecting a Lana Del Rey album on this 1001 list, so I am very surprised. I have always grouped her into a ‘basic white girl’ music artist which I still stand by, but I will say she is a in a higher calibre compared with others in this category. To start the piano and guitar instrumentals are quality, after listening to mainly older albums from 1001 you can really appreciate the production and sound quality of modern music. The sound is very slow, sombre and deep sounding album with a soft textured but powerful voice making a nice harmony.
However, it did start to become a little bit samey sounding, I think it’s all good tracks to listen to but due to their slow tempo it’s quite soothing which was lowkey putting me to sleep. Whole thing felt like one big lullaby but in a nice way, there’s this classical felling to the sound. As musical art I think it’s great, as music that I would listen to on the regular not so much the as the mood is very sombre and sorrowful so I feel like I would need to be in that sort of mood to connect with the music and actually want to listen to it.
I wasn’t a fan of the whispering type signing in the first song it just sounded off to me but standout songs I would say perhaps, ‘Wild at heart’, ‘Dark but just a game’ and ‘Dance till we die’.
God awful haircuts but they can make a decent little tune, some proper toe-tappers. Off the bat I was very surprised by ‘save the life of my child’ it did not sound right on this album and weirdly ahead of its time, personally wasn’t really a fan of it though. The first half of the album was alright, but the second half was quite strong. Standout songs ‘America’, ‘Mrs Robinson’ and ‘Hazy shade of winter’. I can understand why people would not like S&G because it does sound a little corny, but I think it’s a good corny, the songs are just quite jolly and catchy. Debating whether this is a 3 or 4 star album, 2 quite good songs on here but looking at the album overall I would say it isn’t enough for a 4 so a high 3-star it is from me.
My sweet Lord a 2hr album! ‘All things must pass’ and eventually this album does because 2hrs is just unnecessary. For me an album should never really be surpassing 1hr by much. Overall, it was a pretty decent listen but just quite unforgettable only standout songs ‘Beware of darkness 1st version’, ‘Art of dying’ and of course ‘My sweet lord’.
My sweet lord really is a fantastic song, and I expected this album to bring that same sort of calibre for a few more songs. I have noticed that with 1001 they will include an album which has 1 big hit on it rather than the whole album perhaps being worthy of actually being on this list. Giving a mid 3 star as there were a good few nice listens on here but in conclusion it’s just an average album for me. Maybe if it was shortend and better curated it could climb higher.
You know what, I actually really enjoyed listening to this album, I never normally like live albums but this one was quite good. Still think there doesn’t need to be as much cheering in the audio after songs but hey ho. Im sorry but Johnny Cash was that guy, I feel like he just was. I knew a few of his songs before today, walk the line being the only one I knew prior to listening to this album. However, I feel like I did enjoy listening to all the tracks, the overall performance was simple but very entertaining. A very charismatic performer, the songs make you feel like a cowboy roaming the wild west and who doesn’t want to be that. Standout songs ‘walk the line’, ‘a boy named sue’ and ‘San quentin’.
A pretty decent listen, i liked it but i didnt think it was anything super special, a solid 3 stars
I love 3 songs on this album, ‘Heart-Shaped box’, ‘Dumb’ and ‘All Apologies’, I hate 2 songs on this album ‘Scentless Apprentice’ and ‘Tourette’s’, and everything in between that I thought was a good listen. So, it becomes difficult to rate the album as you must weigh up all the songs. I want to rate this album 4 stars and I will, but those 2 songs really ruin it for me, so it just gets into 4 stars because of the songs I love carry a lot of weight for me. I really wish that my top 3 songs were a blueprint for the other songs because they are 5-star songs.
Nah, I don’t know maybe I wasn’t in the right mood for this album or just don’t understand it, but this wasn’t really it for me. After doing some research for it I suppose at the time it was very impressive and this album that has influenced so many that followed it, but it just sounded too goofy for me (maybe that’s the point?). I think there was some good instrumentals here and there is probably a deeper meaning to this album which again maybe I’m missing.
This is my second Beatles album, and I still just haven’t quite connected with them. I don’t know if it’s because you always hear how good they are which sets your expectations so high that when you come to listen to them it’s kind of underwhelming. Overall, this just wasn’t it for me I’m willing to accept I’m maybe missing something but at the moment its 2 stars I’m sorry.
I’m a 2001 baby but even so I like a lot of music from every decade and genre, so why am I not a really big beatles fan? I like some of their songs yes but not the biggest fan of this album. I will continue to go into Beatles album open minded like every album on this project. Maybe something will click with them in the future or is it just you feel like you should like them just because everyone else does, who knows? Anyway, there’s my review guys.
A pretty decent listen, I liked listening to this one but not much to say really some cool beats here and there, a standout song would be ‘Stay'. It didn’t feel like it was anything super special though so just a 3 simple stars from me.
Wow this is pretty bad, the instrumentals were just noise, not music and the vocals were so quiet they just get completely lost. There are parts you do hear just seem very blah anyway, all the songs sound the same, and the album became a tough listen to be honest. Overall, it had quite a dreary and slightly distorted sound which I was not a fan of, at the most this would make alright background music. Standout songs – literally none, the only half decent song was ‘Cupid come’, seriously why is this album on this list.
I will give the 'Artists' credit with the album title though, this album really Isn't anything
I liked this album but also didn’t like it. I thought that there were some great instrumentals in here and the slower tempo songs I thought were good, a little bit moody but felt it matched well with the tone of vocals. Standout songs, ‘Plateau’, ‘Oh, me’ and ‘Whistling song’. Whilst I did like some of the purely instrumental songs I felt like they still could have benefitted from some good vocals.
I didn’t really enjoy the fast tempo songs at the start, it just sounded too rushed almost as if it was in 1.5x speed, paired with the vocals which I felt lacked the energy to match such a fast tempo (as well as a bit screechy) wasn’t it for me. I’m confused why there is repeat songs but played slightly differently, seemed pointless to me. In conclusion I liked some parts and didn’t like some other parts, so I’d say averaging out a low 3-star for me.
Oh, blitzkrieg bop nice, I know this one it’s a great little tune. Ok cool next song similar but still sounds quite good, next song hmm this one sound very similar too. Fourth song this is basically the same song. Fifth song, hang on a minute isn’t this the exact same song?!
My internal thoughts. Yeah, as standalone songs fine basic but a decent listen, put them all in an album and it just seems super lazy when all the beats, flow of vocals etc sound like a repeat. It doesn’t show much range or feel like loads of thought went into the album. I could probably yap on but won’t as I don’t want to sound like a broken record player like this album.
It's Frank Sinatra, classic music just can't really go wrong
A pretty decent listen some good songs on here and so I didn't like so much so probably a low 3 star overall, standout songs 'here comes your man' and 'monkey gone to heaven'
Some good little tunes in here and overall a decent album apart from the goofy circus beats I'm not sure what that was about. I'd never listen to a blur album before and only knew the big hits. I know that there was a big Oasis v Blur thing and I definitely prefer Oasis. Standout songs 'Parklife' and 'badhead'. Good but not great.
To be fair a pretty decent listen, its a rock and opera blend which i think sort of works. Im too young to know a lot about Meat loaf i had only really just heard of him so went into this fairly blind. Id say it was a nice suprise but wouldn't probably listen to much of the songs again but was a good experiance for this project. Standout song 'Bat out of hell'.
I liked listening to this one but not sure if this Elvis Presly guy will catch on. It’s that classic late 50s early 60s sound that makes me wish I was driving through America in a classic muscle car. This was an enjoyable listen with a good range of moods from the songs, it’s some of his best work and I can see how it help set up many sounds later to follow. A decent 4-star album, standout songs ‘ Blue suede shoes’, ‘Just because’ and ‘Money honey’.
I was worried that there would be lack of hip-hop albums so happy to get one even before listening to 50 albums. I’m a big 90s hip-hop fan so may be biased here. However, this album has some big hits so deserving on this list and gives me hope that other big hip-hop albums should come later. Some great songs on here and I personally think that ‘Many men’ is an all-time great in hip-hop. Other standout songs ‘if I can’t’, ’21 questions’ and ‘P.I.M.P.’ (original and remix). Overall, I think most of the songs a pretty decent with some weak ones here and there with the big hits sort of carrying it.
This album is pretty iconic and really took hip-hop to that next level into mainstream and pop charts. I feel like the album could be stronger if it was a little bit shorter cutting out some of those weaker songs. I don’t think I’d buy this album on vinyl however I would definitely look at a best of vinyl as I like some of the songs from film soundtrack as well. A decent 4-star album from me!
Holy shit did not expect a common album on here. The common songs I know aren’t even his biggest ones, but they are hidden gems. I hadn’t listened to this album before, and I think that even without this project I would have checked out this album at some point. To me Common is one of those real MCs his writing has that deeper level to it. When people say they don’t like hip-hop they just think of talk about guns, drugs and women, I would direct them to Common to prove them wrong.
That early Kanye being heavily involved in this album makes it even better, the beats are well done and matched with common’s vocals create some great songs. I wouldn’t say there’s necessary any unreal bangers on here, but all the songs are proper good, a couple standouts being ‘GO!’, ‘Chi-city’ and ‘The Food’. I hope people get a sense of what real hip-hop is from this album and for me this is a high end 4-star album and maybe a 5 in the future, I might look to get this on vinyl as well.
Some decent songs on here nothing crazy special but they have a good little vibe to them. I didn’t really care for the instrumental tracks, and I sometimes found the high-pitched synth sounds a bit ear splitting. This kind of feels like another fairly forgettable psychedelic rock 60s band I’m afraid though. The songs that I liked seemed to mainly just have more classical and acoustic sounds, the tracks that stood out to me were ‘Flying high’, ‘Death sound’ and ‘Super bird’.
First Bob Dylan album I was hoping for an older album of his as they might be a better introduction but oh well. I can definitely respect the long career in music that’s very impressive. It was a pretty decent listen some quality instrumentals and a good vibe from the songs. This album coming towards the later years of Dylans career I felt like the vocals just didn’t hold the same as earlier stuff, I found it quite nasally sounding which I didn’t overly enjoy unfortunately. Some standout songs for me were ‘Dirt Road blues’ and ‘Cold irons bound’, I felt like the vocals matched the vibe of these songs best. I look forward to hearing his earlier work, but this album just felt good but not great, I also feel like a 16-minute song is just unnecessary.
A fun listening experience for sure, I think it was great, but I wouldn’t probably listen again. Personally, I’m not normally the biggest fan of live albums as something I would listen to regularly. I think as well, live albums are just a random selection of songs from a performance rather than a standard album where the songs have been more purposely chosen and curated. Standout songs however for me were ‘Chain gang’ and ‘Twistin the night away’, overall, a good listen, I do like some of Sam Cooke’s other songs.
Mind if a white boy catches a funky vibe? Pretty decent listen to a funky disco album. The beat from 'Good times' is really iconic and recognisable as well as being the 'sampled' in Queen's 'Another one bites the dust' and SugarHill gang's 'Rapper's delight', two big hits come from this one so you have to give some respect.
I did feel like there could of been some more variation in the songs though did feel a little samey. Another standout song is 'What about me' I feel like on this last track they switched it up a little bit. Overall a fun listen but didnt completly wow me.
So many good tracks on this album, throughly enjoyed listening to this. Standout songs 'Hanging on the telephone', 'One way or another' and 'Heart of glass'. I think Blondie does a really good job of combing those electrical sounds with regular instruments and tieing it all together with some quality vocals. I thought about this maybe being a 5 star album but on the second listen didnt feel like it quite reached it. Some underated tracks i found were 'Picture this' and 'Sunday girl' but unfortunley some of the other tracks while they were good did bring my rating down. Nevertheless a fantastic and iconic album which I have added to my vinyl wishlist.
The opening song title should have been a warning about the album, as it was a little boring and samey sounding. You then get, actually get a bit of switch up with a nice song which was ‘My October symphony’, I liked this one it had some great instrumental elements to it. Then in the next song ‘So hard’ whilst the energy was good, I couldn’t stand the intense electric sound effect thing, I think its aged horribly and honestly just don’t think it fitted into the song. For me as well the vocals started to become slightly annoying for me as well, the album started out as a 3-star but for me dropped to a 2-star in the end.
