Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder

I know there’s some classics here but man this just doesn’t do it for me. I think there’s something about the way Stevie wonder sings where it sounds as if he’s passionately articulating every single word and note, but so cleanly and consistently that the whole thing comes off as sterile. Obviously a hugely influential album, but it’s too shiny and too funky to convey much of a message to me.

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan

Numan is obviously doing something new here, and like anyone pushing boundaries he doesn't get it perfect first time. Some of the synths sound pretty quaint and unconfident by modern standards. But you can just feel that this is an album dripping with influencial power. Some of the tracks like M.E. have a shockingly modern feel, from the angle of both vocals and instrumentals (leaving aside the unignorable "where's your head at?" connection. Very deserving of being on this list, and a really fun listen.

Madman Across The Water by Elton John
Mar 25 2026

Still not a fan of Elton john’s singing, but the instrumentals on this one surprised me. There’s some interesting and surprisingly heavy distorted guitars. Unlikely to relisten, but I’m glad to have checked out some songs beyond just tiny dancer.

Electric Ladyland by Jimi Hendrix
Mar 26 2026

Listening to this feels like looking at one of those pictures of a dog wearing sunglasses. I guess when hendrix was at his peak the guitars sounded revolutionary, but now I find all the noodling kind of exhausting. Jimi, I get it, you miss that electric woman and you drive your car at 90mph.

Out Of The Blue by Electric Light Orchestra
Mar 27 2026

Like a discount version of queen where Freddie mercury has been replaced by a swarm of bees. Exhaustingly cheerful.

Nevermind by Nirvana
Mar 28 2026

I haven't listened to this album since I was about 16, probably out of some snobbish attitude towards american punk that I still need to get over. But I'm so happy to come back to it. It's got that quality that all good punk music should have of filling you with energy and bitterness that just makes you want to scream. Can't stay sitting down listening to this album. Easy 5 stars.

Cosmo's Factory by Creedence Clearwater Revival
Mar 29 2026

Mostly pretty skippable 12 bar blues, but I really enjoyed the ramble tamble instrumentals once I got over the unbearable vocals.

Songs In The Key Of Life by Stevie Wonder
Mar 30 2026

I know there’s some classics here but man this just doesn’t do it for me. Let Love Rule by Lenny Kravitz
Apr 01 2026

Enjoyed this more than I expected to. The vocals truly could not be cornier. It's like he didn't know what to sing about so he consulted a list of typical themes of song lyrics, noticed that "love" was somewhere near the top and then just decided he would beat the word to death so that he would have something to do with his mouth other than screech generic rock sounds (the christian theme also got pretty grating). I wish he wouldn't do the pushing-out-a-shit voice the whole time, but I'm glad it's there to provide some contrast to the vapid lyrics. Surprisingly though there's a lot of variety here, some fun instrumentals, and it kept me guessing. Still not really my thing though so it gets 3 stars.

Chirping Crickets by Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Apr 02 2026

Actually pretty listenable but it’s exactly what you’d expect

Want Two by Rufus Wainwright
Apr 03 2026

That's more like it. Knew absolutely zero about this going in, never heard of the artist before. The first two tracks were totally unexpected. Sometimes the classical thing gets a bit overbearing and gives me kind of a musical theatre feeling that I don't like ("little sister"). Very melodramatic but I enjoyed that in a gay way. Felt like actually discovering something new, which I haven't experienced much of on this list so far.

Tea for the Tillerman by Cat Stevens
Apr 04 2026

Really enjoyed that. A really complete album with lots of surprise twists and turns, finished leaving me wanting more.

Darkdancer by Les Rythmes Digitales
Apr 05 2026

This is just the epitome of the 90s, some really cheesy bits but fun nonetheless. Deserves 4 stars just for music makes you lose control

Heroes to Zeros by The Beta Band
Apr 06 2026

Better than the album cover would have you think. I listened on my bike so didn’t hear very clearly, it might be better than that.

American Idiot by Green Day
Apr 07 2026

Just add the heretic is worse than the heathen, (American) pop punk is worse than no punk at all.

Happy Trails by Quicksilver Messenger Service
Apr 08 2026

Got sucked into this right from the first note. Kind of made me think of I’m in your mind fuzz by king gizzard with the wobbly guitars and how the tracks blend together. So good. I need to listen to more pyschadelic rock

Tellin’ Stories by The Charlatans
Apr 10 2026

Already knew from the apostrophe in the title that this wasn’t going to blow me away. It’s discount oasis but I can only be so mad at a band that fills me with that good old new labour naive optimism.

Stardust by Willie Nelson
Apr 15 2026

Nice background romantic dinner music

Exit Planet Dust by The Chemical Brothers
Apr 16 2026

I grew up listening to random chemical brothers tracks on my dad’s MP3 player, but this is my first time listening to this album in full. The squelchy guitar loops and cheesy record spins just do something nostalgic for me. Reminds me of hanging out at my extreme sports obsessed neighbours’ house.

Idlewild by Everything But The Girl
Apr 17 2026

Garden centre music. Gets a 2 instead of a 1 just because it's so inoffensive that it's impossible to feel anything about this album at all. Changed my mind, it’s a 1.

In Rainbows by Radiohead
Apr 20 2026

I’m not the kind of person to say everything Radiohead has ever done is a masterpiece, but this is as close to perfect as albums really get. It dips a bit in the middle from All I Need to Reckoner, but the rest is just brilliant. Best Radiohead album for sure

The Low End Theory by A Tribe Called Quest
Apr 21 2026

What this list is teaching me is that I like hip hop

Apr 22 2026

I mean this is all the oasis bangers. They grate on me a bit sometimes, but maybe that’s because being from the north of England these are the kinds of songs you know the words to before you’re onto solid food. But I can’t deny that there are times ahead of me when I’ll be singing at least one of these songs loudly at some summer party.

The Pleasure Principle by Gary Numan

Apr 25 2026

A nice collection of heartfelt songs with a lot of personality. Felt like it got a little old towards the end, but I enjoyed it anyway.

Bad Company by Bad Company
Apr 26 2026

Kind of fun. Got boring after a while though.

Led Zeppelin IV by Led Zeppelin
Apr 28 2026

Never got along with classic rock, but led zeppelin somehow gets away with it. I’ve never understood why everyone gets so excited about stairway to heaven. I am also not a Tolkien guy. That said, I enjoyed listening through this, and I can appreciate why it’s considered one of the best of the genre.

Music Has The Right To Children by Boards of Canada
Apr 30 2026

This is the album that taught me music can be weird and changed my music taste completely. Can’t give it less than 5 stars.

Paul Simon by Paul Simon
May 01 2026

Fun listen, some great guitars

Can't Buy A Thrill by Steely Dan
May 02 2026

In my mind Steely Dan belongs in whatever genre of music that is that makes up the guardians of the galaxy soundtracks, which makes me feel I shouldn’t like it, but somehow I kind of do

Roots by Sepultura
May 03 2026

I just can’t do nu Metal sorry man

Bluesbreakers by John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers
May 04 2026

More Eric Clapton waaahhnnngaalalalgngnging

La Revancha Del Tango by Gotan Project
May 06 2026

This is what people who have heard like 3 songs in their life think people with high brow tastes listen to

Now I Got Worry by The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion
May 07 2026

Ahhh man another generic blues album, here we go… Press play AAAHRHRHHFHFHHHHHGGGV Wait this is 32 songs long?

Run-D.M.C. by Run-D.M.C.
May 08 2026

Oh so this is what all those guys with the t shirts are into huh

Doggystyle by Snoop Dogg
May 11 2026

Cool flow but the lyrics are so cringe

Morrison Hotel by The Doors
May 12 2026

Didn’t do a whole lot for me

Mask by Bauhaus
May 13 2026

love this album, makes me want to visit some old decaying gothic churches. Shame that bauhaus never put bela lugosi's dead on an album, it would have fit here well

May 14 2026

I've never listened to a full queen album before, only the greatest hits (1,2,3) compilations I had as a kid. Felt very coherent (which I had imagined would be hard with bohemian rhapsody on there) but definitely a couple of flops that were pretty clowny (but isn't queen anyway). I can excuse it (again because it's queen) but the national anthem at the end was kind of funny.

Live At Leeds by The Who
May 16 2026

Kind of all the same but fun anyway, enjoyed it while cooking
