Maggot Brain by Funkadelic
Apr 11 2026

Album a mixture of rock, funk, riffs, voices (so many voices!) and joy. Reminiscent of The Band here and there, but with loads of fuzz... drummer is mental. Did this band help to inspire the Muppets house band? Last track is mental but the beat doesn't stop - percussion is epic!

Ellington at Newport by Duke Ellington
Apr 12 2026

Finally managed to listen to this - I enjoyed the big band jazz and appreciated the musicianship all round. You could tell there were technical problems with the recording, and the chap who talks in between stuff got way too much time on this record, but all in all quite enjoyable. Made a nice change.

Sign 'O' The Times by Prince
Apr 13 2026

Loved this record - not quite timeless, but a very decent listen.

Rock 'N Soul by Solomon Burke
Apr 15 2026

This is a genre I don't normally listen to on purpose - I don't dislike the music, but I'm not really "in to" it. However, the opening track on this album, Cry to me, took me a little by surprise - what a voice! He sings with such power and feeling! The rest of the album didn't really appeal to me but I listened to the end just to hear him sing. I fully appreciate the music and skill needed from everyone involved - the recording process in the 60's was far less forgiving than modern techniques and they had to get it right very quickly.

Talking Heads always put a smile on my face - I love the peculiarity of them. Some great tracks on this album - the opening track (Thank you for sending me an angel), although quite short, sets the tone for the rest of the album, which powers along with foot-tapping joy. There's a great mixture of rhythms - "Warning Sign" features tight break-beats, while "Take me to the river" is more anthemic with deep reverb on the snare, and lots of funk-punk in between. Loved it :)

Music From The Penguin Cafe by Penguin Cafe Orchestra
Apr 23 2026

I remember being introduced to the Peguin Cafe Orchestra when I was young and they were new - there's a special place in my heart for the telephone and rubber band song! This album was in the same league and thoroughly enjoyable, with interesting melodies and calm pacing. Brilliant!

Music From Big Pink by The Band
Apr 24 2026

Another album I grew up with - every song is a winner.

Horses by Patti Smith
Apr 25 2026

Enjoyable enough - I've never really listened to Patti Smith and feel like I've been missing out. Lots of energy.

Classic! Great album, raw-sounding and good fun.

Achtung Baby by U2
May 09 2026

I personally think this is one of U2's best albums.

Giant Steps by The Boo Radleys
May 10 2026

What a pleasant album - refreshing, nice production, great vocal harmonies, interesting songs....

GI by Germs

Paul's Boutique by Beastie Boys
May 14 2026

Not bad - more of the same from The Biys, I think.

Haunted Dancehall by The Sabres Of Paradise
May 15 2026

Nice, chilled album - maybe they inspired Fourtet?

Histoire De Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg
May 19 2026

I actually really enjoyed this album. I enjoyed the laid-back feel to it and that tight 70's production.
