It was nice music, definitely a pleasant soundtrack on a summer day. Can't help thinking that there's surely an even better album of Brazilian jazz out there if we actually looked in Brazil.
Very lovely soft sax playing by Getz which definitely has inspired a lot of jazz musicians (me included if I count). Didn't convey the most emotion (in my opinion) though, which is something I'm looking for in music at the moment!
Top track: Chega De Saudade... But this is cheating because it wasn't until after I heard that I realised Spotify had moved on from the album itself. Deserved a special mention nevertheless because I loved the trumpet intro.
This was so much fun, definitely had a better time studying with this. Enjoyed it more than Electric Ladyland which I had tried before.
Top tracks: May This Be Love, Red House
This was really cool, especially knowing that it's all made from vinyl samples. I do prefer hip-hop with rapping I think and something like techno if it's just sounds, but this was still good.
Funny how some albums are great for studying and others are distracting. Jimi Hendrix yesterday was good. So is Lou Reed. This wasn't but I got used to it because it makes the work so much more enjoyable.
Contrary to expectations, I preferred it through even a small bluetooth speaker to headphones. Maybe that was just the times of day or maybe it's a music for chilling out to, for having on while you lounge about the living room or sit in the sun with friends.
Top track: Mutual Slump, I really liked the little voice clips in that one
Normally don't like shouting in basically any context but I actually would quite reluctantly say it just about worked here. I enjoyed the rhythms! And I liked the steady early rapping style like in 6 'N the Mornin' (and probably loads of other 80s rap I don't know).
The thing is even if I don't fully like the genre, all of these albums are going to be probably just good enough to appreciate and enjoy anyway.
I'm sure I had a favourite track but it's the first day I've been busy enough not to find time to review yesterday's album so I can't remember! (Worth it for a lovely walk in the sun and board games though)
I was surprised to find I didn't recognise the names of any of these songs except the last. There are some cool bits in the album - beginnings of the iconic queen electric guitar and Freddie Mercury's singing (which must surely have inspired Jeff Buckley). I think they are taking themselves a bit seriously here. I don't know how innovative it was at the time - probably very - but I honestly found it a bit boring. Later queen to me seems like they're willing to have more fun, be more silly and hence create exciting, unusual and fun songs. Like ABBA, I think queen might be more of a "greatest hits" band for me.
Ok, that's a bit harsh. This album is cool and exciting, but the chorus of almost whiney voices obscures the music a bit for me. I think they cool off on this later with more of the clean bendy sounding guitar solos and the emotion-conveying piano.
Top tracks: white queen (as it began), nevermore, seven seas of rhye
I was so happy to see this album yesterday! Favourite track is of course 'you are the sunshine of my life'. ☀️ Love the pacing of the album, the rhodes keyboard, and obviously stevie wonder's sunny singing.
This was surprisingly varied and enjoyable but I have to give it 3 stars in honour of the many better albums which could have taken its place in the list. I would have been cheered up knowing it was taken out in an update to the list, if only 2 Adeles, Britney, Gorillas, Muse and Skunk Anansie hadn't gone too. Thankfully all still available on the generator for our random listening enjoyment.
Top tracks: Simon Diamond reminded me of Gorky's Zygotic Mynci but a bit more boring. I enjoyed Goodbye and Calendars and Clocks too
Enjoyed this but the chord progressions or something are getting boring with all these basically rock albums. This was likely a knock-off alanis morissette to me.
Top track: I Shall Believe (I like an emotional end track to an album and I was in the middle of a very hot leafletting round in the sun when I heard it)
Very peaceful and enjoyable and a little interesting. Have listened to some of Elliott Smith's songs for years so it was cool to listen though a full album - first one I've had like that in this list.
Meh. Bland version of Wilco. Listenable but probably not one of the 1001 albums to listen to before you die.
Top tracks: 5-4 was a little groovy, range life was quite pleasant.
Really enjoyed this more than other bob dylan albums even! It felt more concise, richer and less dry I think.
Top track: tangled up in blue but maybe just because I know it better
Quite fun and creative but feels more like someone playing around at an electric piano than anything profound or memorable.
Fine but for me it doesn't bring anything new or exciting or convey anything much. Electric keyboard is the highlight for me of course.
Top track: in memory of elizabeth reed. Many of the tracks started well and then just went on for too long without really going anywhere.
Might be really fun if you were dancing in a barn in a dusty field in America.
Maybe I'm being too harsh because it probably was a bit innovative at the start of the 70s.
Actually it does build up a bit as the album goes on which is fun and makes me kind of wish I was there at the live show.
Enjoyed this! Sounds like the Beatles crossed with Paul simon
The music was really good but the lyrics were wild
I enjoyed this, think it was well paced. Some typically uneasy early 70s lyrics in places. Made me feel quite nostalgic about the end of uni.
Top track: the Ballad of El Goodo
I'm glad we got a good album today but it does annoy me that Steely Dan is the type of band you KNOW is in the list a disproportionate amount of times.
After listening: it's not even that good of an album. It doesn't pain my ears but neither does it excite them.
I really got a feel for being there live with all the screaming. Funky but still quite similar to a lot of music from the 60s
I like these guys. Bit random for the 1001 list to be honest but I guess it's cool that they're collaborating on the same one album. So I'll give it 5 stars mainly from a sentimental perspective. The music was good but they each have better albums musically tbh.
I really liked this! It was experimental but at the same time it knew who it was and did it well.
This is the kind of album I hoped would be in this list. Albums that know what they want to do, do it well, are well produced and emotionally expressive.
Adele can feel a bit like she's following a standard formula sometimes, but she does it well and I don't mind because I like the nostalgic thought that she learnt it in the same London school my sister went to.
So many classics of the last ten years in here.
Thought this would be quite boring and typical 1001 albums white American rock but actually I really liked it! Another album that knows what it's doing and does it well. I like the american folkiness and it conveys emotions but also is fun, doesn't take itself far too seriously.
Top track: tomorrow is a long time.
Tapped into my childhood love of echo and the bunnymen and elvis costello. 5 stars = would buy on CD and listen again if I had more money and space for CDs.
Honestly I thought this would be more fun but I just found it quite annoying the longer it went for... Maybe it's because needs dictated that I had to hear it whilst studying rather than partying... Even the bangers are a bit boring danceable-but-heard-it-before vibes. Still nice to have a bit of disco!
