Album Summary

Catch Without Arms is the third studio album from the alternative rock band Dredg, released on June 21, 2005 on Interscope. Produced by Terry Date and the band itself, the album marked a change to a simpler and more straightforward musical style. Lead singer Gavin Hayes commented on his lyrical approach to this album, saying, "The whole underlying basis of the lyrics and the music is opposites, contrasts... I’d written some lyrics that are based around conversations or arguments, so we thought about a record with two halves that contrast each other. The whole basis of the record could be about objection to ideas, and contrast."

Catch Without Arms is the third album from alternative rock band Dredg. According to the wiki this album has a more straightforward sound than the two previous albums. Maybe the earlier ones are more to my liking, this one is not though. I don't find the compositions very interesting and the style+sound are something I have heard so many times before and better. It's not a bad album, but I would not know a reason to listen to this album, let alone find it to be essential.

Rating: 9/10 Best songs: Ode to the Sun, Bug eyes, Catch without arms, Tanbark, Hungover on a tuesday

I kind of liked this... a nice bit of bombast, some good songs.

I'm a big dredg fan - back to the Leitmotif days. And when El Cielo came out I thought it was one of the best albums ever. I was very excited for Catch Without Arms. When this album came out I was initially disappointed with the change in sound the band was making. But, it has grown on me over the years. It was a treat to stumble over this album in this list. Thank you for the submission!

Solidly within its lane of 90s-2000s alt-rock flavored power pop. All very polished and competent, I certainly didn't mind listening. Nothing about it really captured my attention though.

All the cheesiness and cliches of listening to Muse with none of the instrumental payoff. This LP shows its hand in the back half when verses start getting repeated over and over, clear there wasn’t enough inspiration lyrically or instrumentally to justify the runtime.

Better than I expected

Pretty standard alt-rock

Another one I would love to hear why it was suggested. Enjoyable enough record just not sure what pushes it to 1001 territory.

The mediocre local band in your small town recorded their songs.

This one didn't really inspire me. It's not particularly my brand of rock, and there was nothing idiosyncratic to this album or group that I could really latch onto. Competently made, but ultimately not something I could connect with 3/5

University alt rock radio vibes

Pleasant enough. Rock with a few different iterations of style. At times it's more Coldplay; at others it's a bit pop punk. I struggle to imagine the person where this is their number 1 album of all time.

This entire album kinda sounds like I'm listening to the same song on loop for 55 minutes. Thankfully it's a pretty good same song. Also what the fuck is Wikipedia smoking having this tagged as "Experimental Rock / Post-Rock / Progressive Rock".

Just didn’t click for me. It feels like pretty middle-of-the-road alt rock, with a few decent moments but nothing that really grabbed me.

Another samey alt rock album

The first song kind of reminded me of U2, with maybe a dash of the Killers thrown in, and I kind of liked it. But after that it settled into this very generic-sounding alternative rock. Didn't care for it much at all. 2.5 stars, rounding to 3.

Alt-rock, not bad

Bombastic sound on most songs. I liked that. But a about halfway through the album, most songs started to sound a bit more of the same. Still liked this though
