There are some strong songs on this album, but it doesn't rise above albums in its peer category (Interpol, Strokes, Wombats, early Foals). I also prefer my post-pop punk to be more rock and less pop. That lands this album between a 6/7 out of 10.
No wonder its a classic, the album starts off with memorable punk-pop anthems and then settles into a softer but nevertheless consistently grungy middle, with a tender Something in the Way to seemingly finish off the album, only to jerk back to the upbeat harshness of Endless, Nameless.
Who knew that a male brit group could evoke so much emotion. even the album artwork suggests that something as monolithic and common as a boy band from england and turn it into something incredible. my only confusion is why DSotM is regarded more highly than Wish You Were Here which is undeniably better
I wasn't angry about listening to this for about 30 seconds and it was the 2 unexpected harmonica solos. I told myself if she was younger than 19 when this came out, I'd give it a 2. No dice
During Armistice Day, I thought he sang "Oh, i'm weary from waiting in Washington D.C., I'm coming to see my congressman, but he's a boy to me" and I thought WOAH an interesting lyric?? Then I looked it up and the line was "but he's avoiding me" and that's when i realized this album is poop
I left this listening experience similar to leaving the Barbie movie - the whole thing was fine but the novelty ran off about 10 minutes in
Welcome to the working week ... like he has non-working weeks? Can't compute. Also does anyone else think this guy sounds like he really wants to be cool but is kinda a loser? 2
I wish i was cool and liked art pop / art rock more. I enjoyed Quicksand and Fill Your Heart the most. 3.5/5
I definitely don't know why this is on the list. I've never even heard of this album. It's good, and the dude is related to Earl Sweatshirts which is cool. 3.5/5
The edgy make-up wearing british boy band isn't usually my thing, but this album is kinda hard and sounds a lot more modern than plenty of 80s industrial rock. 4/5
Our seed is savage for picking Miles Davis, arguably the most famous trumpet player of all time, right after Hugh Masekela. USA! USA! USA! But what a random album to pick, Blue Note was already in its heyday by 1957 and 'Round About Midnight came out the same year which is much better. If Silver Horace doesn't come up before the end of the year, I'll be fussy. Either way, still a good album. 4/5
The double-tracked backup singers on this album is so cute. It's not rock n roll though, imo. Listening to Eruption, I was reminded of when Michael J Fox rips off a shred in Back to the Future and says "oh i guess you won't be ready for that for another 20 years". Well I'm still not ready for it 40 years later, unimpressed. 3.5/5 rounded down to 3. Somehow 35 min was too long. I did like On Fire, which funny enough is the lowest listened to song on the album on spotify
This is like a less interesting sparklehorse - but i love sparklehorse, so i kinda linked this. the vocals are too Bill Callahan-y for me though. 3.5 down to a 3
Wanna hear something crazy? Even though I absolutely love Radiohead, I've never listened to this album before. And what a mistake, this is another beautiful rendition of the signature Radiohead sound. What a treat. If I'm stuck on a deserted island, send me radiohead records
This was fine. I'm not sure I like her brand of folk enough to want it for almost an hour. Through some research, I learned she went and lived with Buddhist nuns in Thailand a few years before releasing this album. I'm not sure that comes out in the music tho :/ 3.5 rounded down to 3
I know I just said that I don't like classic rock, but this actually rocks! 4.5 rounded down to 4, if I was in a better mood or this was 20 min shorter, maybe 5
Sabotage is an obvious highlight, it's as close to a Death Grips-style harshness that you're gonna catch in mainstream music. Then you got the boom bap from Get Together. I didn't even tire of the distorted vocals because those excellent jazzy-funk interludes. 4.5/5 rounded to 4
This is some weird shit, but I can dig it. There's a lot of hate for this online, and if I was forced to listen to it on the radio or by my parents, I'd probably hate it too. But I wasn't, so I don't. 3.5 / 5 rounded up to 4 just to be cheeky. Was not expecting to hear "Our House", but also wasn't fully surprised by it either.
I'm all for a jam sesh, but this was a little too half hazard for me, 2/5
This sounds like something Shaun and Gus would listen to (aka, it sounds like the 80s). I was expecting another shitty rock album which I just COULDNT HANDLE. But this had a little pop in it so it was a nice break. It loses points for being so damn repetitive. 3/5
He may be a lying cheating scoundrel, but One Woman sure is smooth. By The Time I Get To Phoenix was hard to get through tho
Some of these older albums that are selected are the "sound old but also sound modern" variety ... not this one, this old. Case in point - these dudes are still calling their sexual partners "little girl" (*pukingemoji*). Also You Can't Love 'Em All is both problematic and wrong - of course you can when they all got the eyes for you like he says. 2/5
If he sticks it deep inside, maybe it's her that's loose? Just throwing it out there. Anyway, I get why someone wouldn't like this because these bros are punks. But this album rocks and I enjoyed it, especially since they kept it to within 35min. 4/5
Did anyone else expect his voice to sound a lot different based on the album cover? I'll just listen to Johnny Cash if I want country. This wasn't bad to listen to but wasn't special,. Except Fingernails, I'm all for a carefree song but wtf are we doing here. A 3/5 if I ever heard one.
This is so damn pleasant, I love Willie Colón. In reality, this is probably more of a 4.5 / 5, but lets round up to 5/5
There are definitely some strong songs on this album (Zero, Here Is No Why), and I've always LOVED To Forgive. Of course one of my favorite beers is named after a line in Bullet With Butterfly Wings. But overall, the album is just meh and wears me down by the end. 3/5.
my first repeat album from my other group, and it's a doozy. The songs get a little too repetitive for me, but bonus points because sonically it has that signature Nirvana excitement. Also how does Nirvana have only like 2 albums yet they still repeat guitar riffs? 2.5/5 down to 2
I don't know who this John Barleycorn character is, but he sounds like a real ruffle-rouser. I feel like I need 3 or 4 more listens before I really form an informed opinion of this. I think it's a 4?
30 seconds in, I was ready to tap out. But I can see how bands like Interpol were influenced by this. I'm not ready to say it's great but I didn't mind the listen, 3.5/5 rounded down
This is just nice and sweet. I love Garfunkel's 2010s-jaret-looking ass. Baby Driver is a rare example where an American group builds off 60s Brit-Pop without being annoying. 4/5.
This album is a real jam, 4/5
I don't have much to say, this was just really nice to listen to. Why better than I expected given the album cover and band name. 4/5
Despite being named after the guy, I have never willingly listened to this album before. I enjoyed it enough, Vienna is definitely an excellent song. probably a 3.5 overall but will round it to a 3 because i did leave half way through and listen to a few DIIV covers
There is something beautiful about modern artists bringing a fresh twist on classical / traditional music in Latin American countries. I think Natalia Lafourcade is the best modern example, but BVSC's inspiration from the dark yet musically rich days of Batista is beautiful. Now to the actually composition of the songs, I liken it to the rock n' roll days of Neil Young and Crazy Horse where the lyrics are simple but the jams are drawn out, sophisticated, and exciting. El Cuarto de Tula is one of my favorite songs of all time. 5/5
I love a concept album! 3/5
It's not true for all Beach Boys albums, but on this one these guys are way too carefree for me, it makes me sick. 2/5
Seems like this album could've been a little more subtle no? The only song that really sticks out is Take Your Clothes Off When You Dance, that song bopped. 2/5
I only survived this horrible singing style by mostly going numb to it. 1/5
She's got such a weird carefree way of singing in general that I struggle to enjoy her music. Like you can't just talk quickly without rhyming and call it singing. However, there were actually a few songs i liked (Raised on robbery, free man in Paris, twisted), so I'll give it a 3.5 rounded down
I can never tell whether I vibe with bjork or whether she annoys me. I really liked One Day and in general the album, but since I literally never choose to listen to her, i gotta give it a 3/5
Not a bad album, I liked "The Look of Love, Pt 1.". Good dance tune. 3.5 / 5 rounded down?
I feel like this is close to being cool but ends up being annoying, 2/5
I can't wait to see what everyone else rates this album, because I was once again surprised by how much I enjoyed a new (to me) Stones album.
Maybe the worst vocals on an album I've ever heard, this is unlistenable 1/5
If sex ain't wiggling around like a lizard in a can, then I don't know what sex is. But how good was that harmonica ringing through the night in Heartland, that caught me by surprise. Otherwise, the album is mostly run of the mill. If I was tipsy and dancing in a club with Shaun and Gus, maybe it would be a 4, but here it's a 3.5 rounded down to 3
This was way better than expected, a little punk and a little pop. 3.5 rounded to 4
I'm not here to say this is his best album, but I love the vibes on this. Plus it's rare to have such a guitar-heavy album by Miles Davis so this feels like a treat. 4/5
This was mostly uninteresting, even though the album cover is rather interesting to say the least. I did find a version of this album that is performed by an Australian Symphony that is far superior. 2/5
First off, at first I thought using Jay Z's Public Service Announcement to kick off the album was a cool idea with some cultural context that I don't understand, but doing some research I see no online discussions of the PSA sample, so I guess that's lost to history. Regardless, her voice is out of this world. Also the transition from Walk Away and Fighter is flawless. The album in general dragged on a little too long for me, so it's a 3.5 instead of a 4, and it gets the round up since this was better than a lot of other albums we've had. 4/5
TWENTYFIRST CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN. I'm baffled by how tame this album is. It's a fine collection of songs, but not excellent. 3.5 rounded up since it's far superior to what we've been listening to
I'm not a huge Bowie fan, but I really enjoyed this album. I love these modern twists on classical sounds. I don't think I'll ever enjoy a song about getting high to get through life, but this is the best one I've heard. A solid 4/5
