Epic, good on its own as well and not just a background; quite enveloping, imagine good music to get high to lol
Did not finish, just not for me and just pretty generic I think- don't think rock and roll will really be for me
Really quite amazing I think; good to listen to on its own and not just background just to hear all the individual parts; not 5 stars because probs not absolute favourite but good reminder of how I really like jazz
I like the beats, could really see how the album was really influential to rap later on. What is holding it back for me is the lyrics, the one song with Flavor Flav listing out different flavors is corny as hell lol and the She watch channel zero being so lecturey to some woman enjoying soap operas as cheap entertainment while the guy complains about not being able to watch the game is pretty hypocritical i think. Think the more political tracks are better. Liked the Black steel track telling the story of the narator escaping for example. Overall like the beats and can appreciate its influence but not something i would return to too often
I think its pretty good. Like the earlier tracks pointing out the pointlessness of war and fighting for your country. I think the juxtoposition of how sad lyrics and cheery music works better on some tracks than others. Some neat solo guitars as well. Think i appreciate it when I am listening to it but wont be returning to it too much. I would probably do 3.5 stars if i could but would be happy with a 3
Remember thinking the tracks are catchy and liked the production. Lyrics can be hit or miss- especially that blue dress song eh. I think the fact i havent really returned to it too much since i listened to it a few years ago means wasnt really stand out album for me. Still do like personal jesus and enjoy the silence (i chose to interupt that as drugs lol cause i never like songs that tell a romantic partner to be quiet), but havent felt the need to return to it much and still dont
Eh enjoyed it more than other classic rock album, some standout tracks- thirteen, the ballad of goodo, watch the sunrise. Liked the more sentimental songs I think and not like the weird take me back songs and the angry songs. I do get a kick of the singer saying he doesnt need a doctor or shrink because he has his baby if i heard it right lol but the song itself isnt good enough for me to bother if that is right lol. Think the instrumental more varied and interesting than a lot of other rock albums similar to this i guess. Overall maybe go back to the few standout tracks but just not keen to listen to it again as a full album experience.
Second track just put me off with the no means yes thing I am not listening to any more; i did like the music decent enough and was trying to see if there it's trying to be ironic or anything or fits a grander narrative- what ive read from the wikipedia and global reviews though a lot of it surrounds sex and seduction and I am not for it. The first track was creepy enough with the weird deep voice. I think the album doesnt seem significant enough to give it another chance
Yeah i think its pretty good! Most songs i find enjoyable. Too bad the last two songs fall flat for me, with the melody not doing it for me and the vocals not up to snuff. But there are definitely some stand outs- Unfinished Symphony is great and Safe from Harm as well. The instrumentals reward a closer listen as well with the individual parts. I do like the fusion of genres as well with like the record scratches amid the more straightforward tracks. Would be 3.5 but fall back to 3 stars. Tentative 3 though, may need to return to it more to fully appreciate it
I am so glad i got to listen to this album again, such great tracks. The hits like you oughta know and ironic still slap. Also like the uplifting tracks like hand in my pocket and perfect. Forgiven is such a good deep cut and just such a good song about religious trauma. I like all the songs in some way or another, even the more annoying "you learn" song lol. Sharp lyrics, great music and range of emotions, good flow of album. And i dont know just has that quality that classic albums have that after a couple listens it feels like its always been a part of my life. I dont know how to explain it lol, same feeling I have with Rumours by Fleetwood Mac. 5 out 5 stars!
This album has pretty dynamic and nice instrumentals. Stand outs for me are songs like Angels of Deception, Infected, and The Mercy Beat. I like how the instrumentals build and become more intricate, especially in The Mercy Beat. Definitely holds my attention despite the song's length. The lyrics are pretty good as well, delving into things like inequality and desperation. The bible references makes the lyrics feel grander and i like how some tracks tell a pretty compelling story. In the case of Heartland, where they imply the main problems of England is that it is the 51st state of America, i think it falls flat lol. Just a very weird take lol and kind of leaves the English ruling class off the hook. Up to that point the lyrics were pretty good. Overall though, i think it is a very enjoyable album that I think rewards repeated listens and delving into the lyrics more. 4 out of 5 stars.
Good album to place into the background and think will reward deeper listens. Walking in the park when "Minawa" was playing and it was pretty surreal. Musical styles vary quite immensely so don't think there really is a dull moment here. Will need to listen on its own soon though to get accurate listen. 6/09/25
It's decently interesting while I listen to it. And there are interesting stories like the first song Nebraska in the point of a serial killer and some sergeant excusing his brother. I do like "Atlantic City" and "Mansion on the Hill" has some pretty effective imagery. But overall, I don't think the music itself is all that interesting and I wouldn't have much desire to return to this album a lot. 8/9/2025
It's pretty good! Not going to lie, at this moment I am not really in the mood for such a upbeat almost party album lol. I am sure there is a hint of irony behind like more outright hedonostic themes, but I have not been paying attention to the lyrics. The songs are a little too long for my taste but I think the instrumentals are interesting enough to retain my attention. For example, the drum breakdown of "Us v. Them". I reckon this is the point where I have to weigh out the subjective and objective factors around this album. I think that in another time, I would actually really enjoy this album but right now I am not feeling it. Like I recognise this album is real good but I can't seem to be in the mood for it lol so might weigh it lower than I would otherwise out of sheer personal enjoyment. Considering I think this album will hit really hard once I have the mental energy to look at the lyrics and pay attention to the instrumental intricacies, I am comfortable giving it a 4 stars now. 12/9/25
I like all the songs! It was so great and punchy! I cant believe it was from 1977. The instrumentation is enveloping. The music never stays on a motif for too long before it moves into more interesting territory in my opinion. And all the lyrics relating to robots and machines are endearing lol. I think "Metropolis" and "Neon Lights" are my favourite tracks but i like them all! 5 stars! 5/9/25
Surprise surprise, a classic album is classic. The songs transition really well and I like the guitar solos and that one song with the sax. It's the type of album that's good to sit back and listen to really. I do wish "Gig in the sky" had lyrics lol, I think the woman singing is very good but I feel like without lyrics song doesn't really lead anywhere. That is a really minor gripe lol and I will continue rocking out to that song. Yeah, not much to say except it's a pretty great rock album and pretty much all the tunes are stellar. I think in the past I wasn't as fond of it because it's reputation preceded it and I was expecting some experience of grandeur I guess so I was disappointed when my life wasn't flipped upside down or something lol. But now I have learned how to appreciate music just for its own sake I guess and not have those sorts of expectations now. Which i think makes the music listening experience much more enjoyable. 5 stars! 12/9/25
Quite enjoyable! I think there's a lot of cool musical ideas in all the songs. Kind of wish pop had these more intrictate new wave instrumentals now lol. The songs are catchy but there also moves through pretty well between different instrumentation and sounds that I think you don't really see in a lot of pop now I think. This is more the case for the deep cuts, the hits like "Time after Time" and "Girls Wanna Have Fun". Solid pop album. Unfortunate a Romanian slur is used quite prominent in one of the songs lol. I think I might appreciate more with repeated listens and when I am in a better mood but right now I am comfortable giving it 4 stars. 12/9/25
Eh it's ok. "Mrs. Robbinson" still slaps. The title song is catchy. I don't know the instruments nor the lyrics don't draw me in. I think if I were to enjoy the music more I'd have to listen to it multiple times maybe. But very first impression, not really grabbing or compelling me to listen more.
Like the music! The little jam sessions at the end of some things is nice. The last song is so preachy and corny though lol. The cows mooing is really something lol. Not going to lie, didnt read too much of the other lyrics but hopefully not as preachy as that. Good thing its the last song so i can skip it. Other than that, the rest of the music is pretty good! Oddly not as political as i thought it would be, just very angsty lol. But honestly the music just really carries, pretty pulsating and good guitar work. 4/5 stars. 25/9/2025
Good tunes, feels very 90's and very unrelenting I think. Everything just working together really well i think. I dont know what else to say lol, just a lot of good musical ideas.
Yeah this album is honestly kind of unserious lol. The lyrics are kind of just not really as political as they want to be and kind of pretty I don't know very abstract and doesn't take a strong stance. Like the song "Genocide", like why would you suggest giving someone your genocide. Doesn't really blame anyone in particular who commits genocide. If its not giving very non-political political statements, like addressing gun control in "come and play" suggesting not being prosecuted under 18 and young people just love to play guns instead of being a systemic issue, then it's pretty self-involved otherwise and falls into the trap of people brainwashed or whatever. I don't think I would have minded the lackluster lyrics if the music itself was interesting. But it's pretty stock standard punk music. Some good guitar work but yeah that's pretty much it. Also songs are pretty catchy at least and not in too annoying of a way. 2 stars. 26/9/25
Nice to put on in the background. Have been doing that for a while with studying. Is quite long lol so can doze off when i try to listen to it on its own. Still quite an expansive experience and puts to music a sense of urgency that is really good to do when studying or doing chores. And returning of motifs and shifting to entirely new ones within a song is good enough to retain your attention if you break up listening experience to chunks lol. 4 stars
Yeah it was decent. Second half better than the first half. And a couple of stand outs like "Get a Grip on Yourself" and "Down in the Sewer". Otherwise, eh. Quite enjoyable while listening but don't see myself really coming back to it
This album kicks ass! From the very first song "Personality Crisis" I was dancing lol. Love the interplay between the guitars in "Trash" as well. I think also the sequencing is perfect honestly. Just that there is enough variety of the songs that no songs similar vibe to each other is next to each other, maintaining my interest even more. All the guitar solos are great. I think builds on the classic blues/rock song structure really well. I like the occasional breaks, like the stop and start of the vocals or the little guitar lick break in "Bad Girls." I think every song has those little things to appreciate. 5 stars! 27/09/2025
Pretty interesting album. The lyrics are pretty poetic and conjure up some nice imagery. One that stands out is whisps of smoke looking like a highway. Music is pretty as well. Think what is the draw of this album is that that even if I don't understand what the lyrics mean, they make me want to find out. Also makes me interested in Leonard Cohen as a person as well, the context in which the songs are placed. All of that wouldn't really mean much if the music wasn't interesting which I'm glad to say it is while I am listening to it. Heaping a bunch of praise on this so think need to justify my 4 star rating, i think doesn't really have that wow factor for me. Quite a personal and intimate album and feel like if I related to it more or if there were stand out lyrics that put me in awe I would give it a 5 stars. Music as well while good also not really that interesting on its own to compensate for the lack of oomph power lol. But still good album and would like to look into the lyrics more when I have more time.
Eh, of the time. Do not like the references to little girls every other song. Nor that the songs all relate to how good said little girl is or the sexual proweress of the singer lol. Good singer, music good albeit basic and repititive at a certain point. But didnt even finish it because knew was not going to be into the rest of the songs. So one stars.
Not going to lie, this album is so weird and intriguing. Of course there is a pretty sexist song "It won't get better". Twas the '60s. But all the other songs are either pretty abstract, weirdly spiritual, or is "Old Kentucky Home" lol, which is also a outlier country ditty and the last song for whatever reason. But yeah the music is pretty great, ornate in some areas and dynamic all throughout. The lyrics are prettt endearing actually, especially the song "Triangle" which implies that life is a circle and then a triangle? Also, song "Painter of Women" which is about a blind man in a Persian rug being able to paint women? It's just pretty bizzarre and pretty intriguing not going to lie. I think all these interesting lyrics wouldn't matter if the music wasn't great. But it just is. I think one song to skip doesn't negate all the other songs that I would want to explore. I think if I could I would put it as a 3.5 stars. Although i have heaped praise on this, think the bizarre lyrics do cut against it as well because I don't think would return to it heaps lol. But since i can't do 3.5 stars, I'm happy to do 4 stars so that I'd be more inclined to check it out again in the future.
I like it. Think there are definitely some stand out moments like piano in the "kein weiser" song. The songs can drag on a little bit and some of its annoying aspects reveal itself like the squeeky vocals and not great mixing i think in some of the songs. Still i think a lot of these woes are tempered with overall nice production with a pulsating and dynamic rhythm i think. I'd want to listen to it again to see whether it holds up or not. Would do 3.5 if i can but will leave it at 3 stars for now.
I looked at the reviews before and apparently it was one of the lowest rated albums. I kind of really like it lol. Maybe my tolerance for 80s cheese is too high but i like the little production details they add to make the songs feel more dynamic i guess and just scratch that itch for my ADHD brain. There are so many random additions as well like a guitar solo out of a synth heavy track in "Lover to Fall". And there are some semi-unexpected turns as well I think that I guess makes me intrigued, like in "Perfect Way" and "Wood Beez" have contrasting down tempo and then sweeter/glitzier sections side by side to each other. I guess if it's easy to please me by having a bunch of random sounds just mash up together lol. 4 out of 5 stars
front and back end have some good highlights. Middle is where it falters for me with songs like "go to sleep" and "the gloaming" really harsh my vibe. The pretty harsh mixing is especially distracting in these songs but even in songs i like the harsh mixing i think takes away from it. I also find the lyrics overall are quite abstract (although some songs like "scatter brain" seem more direct). I think when i like the music the lyrics can be more intriguing but when I don't it just exasperates me lol. Like "we suck blood", the clapping is so annoying lol and i think it just makes all the rhetorical questions that don't mean anything just annoying as well. I think the allusions to something political without really being about anything specific just does not really matter to me unless the music is good lol. I think the stretch from "There, There" to "A wolf at the door" Is pretty solid. and of course, "2+2=5" Is a classic. Although i do really like some of the songs and the production throughout is solid and interesting, the harsh mixing especially in some tracks, some odd production choices with weird high pitch noises that don't seem to do anything, and the abstract lyrics does hamper my experience. 3 out of 5 stars
I think I would have been more into this when I was younger and had that "old-soul" phase going on. Or like if its part of a soundtrack of a scene I like. Like I imagine some Edgar Wright movie using a song like "ready teddy" in a car scene. But I probably wouldn't really seek it out too much. I can appreciate it's importance and for what it is but otherwise doesn't really resonate personally to me nor do i think the production is particularly interesting. It's just quite simple comparitatively to other albums as well like it, like the one with louis prima with "just a gigolo". I dont know what much to say lol, maybe if I am in a mood for something i'd put it on. The sax stuff in "slippin and slidin" pretty cool. 3 stars
i think i like the album, it has a pretty interesting combination of different sorts of instrumentals like ska in "(i don't want to go to) chelsea" and kind of a rockabillish theme in other songs. Not going to lie, don't really understand much of the lyrics. What does "they call her natasha when she looks like elsie mean?" Also the opening lines of the "lip service" confusing as well. I think this album works best as just a decent bop. I don't know if he's playing a character of some voyeruristic observer or something in "living in paradise". Quite enjoyable and would see myself listening to it again. Would give 3.5 stars but since cant will give 4 stars. Also "lipstick vogue" slaps-those driving bass and drums are great. The political notes for the most part in "Night Rally" hit as well.
Eh, i think i could get into the instrumentals but the vocals are just so bloody annoying. Don't really like how he ennuciate words so needlessly like the world "hallelujah". He's so off key for a lot of it and it's so annoying. 1/5 stars. Don't think I'll really ever get into it really
I like a lot of the musical ideas but I think the artist just throws shit at the wall and a lot of it ends up being disjointed or annoying. Just a lot of the instrumental decisions like random whistles or the vocals can end up being grating. Although i do end up liking some aspect of each song though. I don't know, think maybe could be worth listening to again to let the annoying aspect fade to the background. Quite dynamic and interesting otherwise. Although i'd rather not with the song equating choking with a quiet revolution in "oxygen restriction". I'll say 3 out of 5 stars but I think id be open to that changing once i get used to the more annoying aspects.
Yeah the album is good. The production is enjoyable i don't think i disliked any of the production choices really. Bass line is always killer in all the songs. Although some songs have similar notes with each other i think and makes the album overstay its welcome at its tail end. But i think at the time of listening they are different enough to still be enjoyable and not be stall. Scratches that itch of my ADHD brain going every which way with songs like "inferno". I think the lyrics need some work lol. Find the references to games endearing albeit forced sometimes. Some unflattering lyrics here and there. Have a knee jerk reaction to any songs alluding to the "friendzone" because of the type of guys that usual complain about it. And the lyrics for that song have confirm my suspicions lol. Also "Tokyo" with references of getting a girl pregnant by being psychotic and the suicide forest. I am open that the artist is playing a character and at least the lyrics do stand out lol. Luckily, the unsavory lyrics is paired with the best production in the album so not too mad lol. Overall, despite the lyrics not being that great it just a nice album to sit back to, enjoy the production choices and just wind down a little bit with anime/gaming references lol. 4 out of 5 stars
It's great! I like all the songs essentially. The songs are so good they are played twice! The vocals are amazing all throughout and i like how the album plays with so many classic musical themes like the 12 bars blues and expands on it with some nice production flourishes. Like the buildup in "drown in my tears", the descending melody and bridge in "don't let me lose this dream". And don't forget the iconic "respect" of course. I realised i actually haven't played the whole song through because there is so much more dynamic instrumentation than i remember in the middle of the song that leads into the iconic spelling bit in the end. Just all around classic and great album. 5 out of 5 stars!
like the production of all the songs. I think i am biased against the song "Jesus" Just cause of religious trauma lol of presenting the solution to the world's ills coming back to religion. But other than that i think all the other lyrics resonate with me about the hard times happening at that time, of feeling like some outside circumstance boxing you in to a hard life. Think ill give bonus points to the album cover, it's pretty good statement even despite the lyrics themselves not being particularly politically proufound themselves. Bass consistently good throughout and really funky and groovy throughout without the songs overstaying it's welcome. Think would give 4.5 stars if I can just because of my bias against the song "Jesus" but will round down to a 4. Reserve the 5 stars for like really standout albums i enjoy all the songs from or that my loved songs trounce any songs i am so so on.
yeah, very 80s lol. Despite the corny lyrics all throughout i did enjoy some songs. "Night train" is my favorite from the album, sucker for a good bass line and doesn't overstay its 7 minutes run time. Other than that though, the song are just too long even the ones i like. On average they are 5 minutes. And the 80s cheese music makes the sacharine and corny lyrics just stand out even more. It was endearing for the first few songs but weared out over time. The song "Second Hand Woman" also soured my taste for the narrator as well, calling this woman as "society's slave" but still wanting to satisfy his desire for a one night stand at least. I don't know just kind of sleezy and makes all his other attempts of reminicising a good past relationship and what not seem hollow. Also, "spanish dancer" is not a good song to dance to lol despite the singer's desperate attempts for the audience to feel the beat under your feet lol. Think will give this album a 2 out of 5 stars. I did enjoy some songs but the most of the album just does not work for me.
of course i listen to this album before and remember enjoying it. It hasn't been a personal favourite of mine for whatever reason, probably cause it was never associated to an important point of my life that even objectively worse albums would have been. Listening to it again, i am struck by like the raw grand emotions the lyrics and music actually convey, almost emo like lol and edging to "nice guy" terriority in the tracks pleading for the love interest to like him back or being better than the guy she is currently dating. Tis was the 60's so I can give the singer some credit, plus don't think it could go to gross territory. I think this album "would have been nice" (lol, not even the complete title) when I have felt those sort of depth of emotions back when I was a teenager around romance or not. Who knows, maybe my most extreme pining years are ahead of me lol. I think even with the happier sounding songs, there always seem to be a tinge or overt melancholy about i guess just life not matching expectations. For example, i appreciate "Wouldn't it be nice" have that one line where he says wheb he talks about it it gets him sad. Also "i just wasn't made for these times" has pretty poignant lyrics of not being able to handle life as it is, which are very relatable to me now. There are also a bunch of musical moments that stick with me, with the harmonies throughout a lot of the songs and the interplay between major and minor keys (i think, don't know much about music theory). I'm not sure how personally important this album will be for me but i understood how it stood the test of time and continues to be loved by a lot of people. And in a weird way i feel more connected to those people and feeling comforted by how similar emotions/experiences seem to transcend time and be relatable for our current time now. For that, and also being genuinely personally enjoyable to me when i listen to it (which is important because a lot of classic albums just aren't for me), this album deserves 5 out of 5 stars.
