1001 Albums Summary

This was my first album on the list. I'm not a heavy metal person, so this was a stretch for me. I liked it much more than I thought I would, especially Run to the Hills. I recognize that it's a great album, it's just not for me... yet. Maybe by the time I get further into the list. Who knows?

I... don't think I needed to hear this album before I died? Tangled Up in Blue is a great song. And Shelter from the Storm and Simple Twist of Fate were good, but as someone who only knows the big Dylan songs, the rest of it sounded like an uninteresting Dylan pastiche to me. There's gotta be much better Dylan albums than this... Right?

Wasn't for me back in the day and isn't for me now.

That Jimi Hendrix has great albums shouldn't be a surprise but it was to me. I'd never liked a lot of the big Hendrix songs I'd heard, aside from All Along the Watchtower, so I thought he was a virtuoso guitarist who didn't do it for me. But I loved this album. The songs were really good, not just a showcase for guitar playing. I'll definitely come back to this and I'm glad the project has exposed me to something I never would have discovered on my own

I can see how if you liked it you'd really like it. It was just there for me. Didn't like it too much, didn't actively hate it. Maybe drugs would help.

A slog for me. I just don't have it in me to appreciate this kind of blues rock.

Most of these songs are pretty good, and some of them are very good. It's a shame I'll never be able to listen to this album as a whole again because I just can't stand all the compression and auto tune of modern pop. To me it makes everyone sound like a tinny robot. Not Taylor's fault but there it is.

More interesting than enjoyable to me. The Most Beautiful Girl in the World was by far the most engaging to me, but I did like bits and pieces of a lot of other tracks. If the whole thing had been like the jazzy bonus track The Man With the Golden Arm I would have rated it much higher, but of course that was written by the great Elmer Bernstein.

I liked a few songs (Best was Eyes to the Wind). Most everything else had a few good ideas but was fairly dull and sooo long. With some editing this could have been a great album.

I *might* give it a 4.5 because we don't need 8 minutes of DSMR or 9.5 minutes of Automatic, and the album cut of 1999 goes on a liiiitle too long. But that's splitting hairs, and with no half stars this is a 5 all the way.

I don't know anything about tropicália music, but I really enjoyed this.

Call me old-fashioned but I like songs to have a melody.

Alone Again Or is an all-time song. The rest of the album is a mix of songs I liked fairly well and songs I was bored by, more of them falling on the "liked" side. I'm definitely rounding my score up due to Alone Again Or though.

The sound is gorgeous, which I guess we can thank George Martin for. I don't love the Beatles as much as some, but yeah, this is a 5.

I grew up on Queen's Greatest Hits, so I thought I really liked them. And maybe I still do, but not with this album. Two great songs, a few good ones, and a lot of indulgent filler.

I was really surprised by this album and will happily go back to it. I guess I'm a Nick Drake fan now?

Great music, an interesting historical artifact, and just a lot of fun. What's not to love?

Oh god, blues rock.

I wish this album had grabbed me a little more, but it had a nice low-key moody sound I really enjoyed.

Solsbury Hill is a great great song. A lot of the rest of it is going to take me a while to absorb, but I liked it. Will I love it someday? Maybe.

There's enough great stuff here to rate 4 stars (and enough blues rock to tempt me to rate it lower). Wild Horses is the highlight.

I like a lot of old school country, but nothing stood out for me here. I liked a few songs.

Great album. A few uninteresting songs in the back half keep it from being a five.

I hated the first three songs, but this album took a sharp turn for the better with Young Livers (which sounds like a punk Summertime Blues), and after that had some songs I liked. Best were Young Livers and Drop Out. I need a copy of the actual 1001 book so I can find out why it was important to hear this before I died because it sounds fairly generic to me.. Kickass title, though.

I really enjoy this era, but I'd never, or at least only vaguely, heard of Solomon Burke. Why didn't he make it into the "oldies" canon? This was fun, smooth, and soulful with that early 60s rock edge.

This album fell through a time portal from 1960 and I am here for it. Some of it sounds like "A Summer Place," some of it sounds like Ricky Nelson, and some of it sounds like country when it was still called country and western. Beautiful lush arrangements all the way through, though it did get a bit samey at times. A really great discovery!

More than a little pretentious, but a lovely sound.

New Order has a unique sound I've always enjoyed and this is no exception. Personally the vocals really appeal to me and complete the effect. There are some outstanding songs on this and a few slightly weaker ones, but overall this is great.

I even like the Across the Universe cover.

I enjoyed the sound but didn't really find many of the melodies interesting. I wish I liked this more.

It doesn't sound like 1966 and I don't doubt it was revolutionary. I like it, but I just don't connect to most of it in a way that would make me love it. (Also, Yellow Submarine is a great song. I don't know what's wrong with you people.)

This + David Bowie = Pulp. I dug it but I'm glad I couldn't understand the words.

I didn't understand this except for how I did. Anyway I think I liked it.

I liked about half of it. The rest was blues rock, but less objectionable than usual.

I've liked what little Tom Waits I've heard before, and I liked this. Like a slightly less accessible Stan Ridgway.

This is Bowie (drawing from Krautrock and experimenting with Eno) giving us a blueprint for the future. The "gated" (but not really) drums and atmospheric synths set the tone for years. Fragmented, alienated pop that's still catchy as hell. Masterpiece.

The nicest thing I can say is "not for me."

The 20-minute-long sci-fi epic first song was kind of cheesy but mostly fun and I enjoyed a lot of parts of it. I didn't care too much for anything on the second side, but didn't hate it either. If I'm ever going to become a prog fan it isn't with this album.

Songs were too long, and not terribly compelling, but somehow I still really liked it? I'm confused.

Love Robyn Hitchcock solo and I loved this. It's interesting to hear this early stuff. Better than most of the bands they influenced.

This was a vibe. Some of the songs I liked from the beginning, but several others I thought were just ok until the music took a sudden turn halfway through and got really interesting. I can see how this album would grow on you.

I can't give this a 2 since it was kind of nice to hear him get to do the elder statesman thing with all the guests. But I will never like the blues.

Back in the day I wasn't especially a Killers fan, but listening now I still knew 7 out of 12 songs from radio play or the zeitgeist. I'm nostalgic for the time when a rock album could get that huge.
