i must confess that jolene is the only dolly album i've listened to top to bottom before this(unless you count trio, i really hope that is on this list) . i listened to coat of many colors a few times through during my shift today and each time was a delight
i was shocked by how much absolute sauce the rhythm section is putting on this. 90% of the time i dig those melodic leading basslines though i feel like the bass in the full band moments can get distracting & lose balance. there’s a bit of delightful psychedelic flavor in the rockier tunes that i wasn’t expecting. here i am feels like it could’ve been a janis song. she has the range! & for a studio backing band these guys really know how to play with dolly’s voice and lyricism
i love songs that tell stories and that’s what dolly weaves these narratives so well into her songwriting - title track & traveling man

the guitar playing on this record is just excellent, i really want to try out the open tunings he was using. the fingerstyle is so full and expressive & accompanies his voice so well. also the fret buzz is perfect to me esp on know
parasite is my favorite because i <3 pain and suffering . but truly i don’t think i would really listen to any of these tracks individually or put them on a playlist when the album itself is so short && like yes all the songs sound the same but to me pink moon is a singular mood more than it is a progression of tracks with different tones

that being said this album is undeniably good, some really iconic riffs & overall just good time rock n roll.. of all the zeppelin records this one for sure belongs on the list and under other circumstances i would have enjoyed listening much more. whatever

i was less familiar with surfer rosa before listening, this is pixies first album and there’s lots of songs about bones (positive)
can definitely hear on this album especially how they influenced nirvana and all those other grunge guys. i love how unpolished it is & how you can hear the space in the recording, it really sounds like demos and i think the low production value really works especially listening 35+ years after release

21st century man is a masterpiece, HUGE face melting sound that just kicks your ass for seven minutes. “mirrors”, the instrumental jazz departure in the middle is definitely my favorite part of the record. it’s fine that the rest of the album (up until the last track) doesn’t hit the same because how are you supposed to follow that up? they should have flipped the tracklist around tbh
i talk to the wind is good but it should be like 2 minutes shorter. fuckin love the flute soloing but it didn’t need to be doubled twice
epitaph is a dark haunting journey, i love how they just put 2 more songs inside of one song. the “march for no reason” bit in the middle absolutely blows me away it feels like the sound just cracks wide open with the mellotron strings and clarinets. more woodwinds!
i think moonchild is fun. i really thought the noodling in the middle was stupid and bad at first and i didn’t get it but after reading that they basically just threw it together to meet the runtime they needed for the album endears it to me for some reason. it’s like they finished the song and forgot to stop the tape
the court of the crimson king is another banger. i love some spooky ren fair shit. i love how this album makes me feel like a powerful wizard in exile from a dark evil kingdom. 5 stars thank you

the rest is good too, i love that they recorded it in a church , i love that big wide open sound & the organnnn on intervention is delightful. and i love theatrical concept albums . definitely easy to see the influence this early arcade fire work had on bc,nr . everyone listen to ants from up there right neowww 3.5 for me!

good road trip album. few complaints, not very much banjo at all, kind of a let down since he’s wielding that banjo so intently on the album cover. feels like false advertising. needed more grace slick lead vox, her songs (somebody to love, white rabbit) are the stone cold bangers of the album. 3/5 of a mile in 10 seconds is the other big standout for me
the rest is pretty meh for me, just sounds a bit like b tier grateful dead tracks..really gorgeous guitar playing throughout that sounds wayyy more interesting in headphones though

never really listened to common before pretty much just knew of him as an actor guy,, but this album was goooood. i don’t think common’s bars are as deep and poetic as he thinks they are most of the time. there’s definitely uuhhhh some bars in here though!

the thing i love most about this album is the collaborators, it’s kind of crazy how many incredible artists he brought together on this album. jill scott’s feature was soooo good, the features overshadow common’s actual performances for me tbh but most of the songs go hard nonetheless. those j dilla /questlove beats hit. groovy stuff. great storytelling, i really loved song for assata especially . really like 4/5 -1 star for the homophobia :( cmon now

lots of bangers on this record, was blown away by the absolute shredding on shining star, i don’t know how i never really noticed that before. maybe because the vocals are so catchy. really dig the title track too, the kalimba (?) solo is veryyyy nice tickled my brain. for a 38 minute album it dragged the tiniest bit for me, i feel like it could have done with one less ballad and one more big banger but overall i really enjoyed the range of this album. lots of psych rock feel and some proggy moments?
definitely have been limited to listening to ewf in a ‘best of’ capacity until this point but i’m looking forward to digging into more of their actual releases

had me for a second there, because like ooooh i love this type of shit, flaming lips wilco pilled elliot smith wannabe singer early 2000s neil young inspired indie folk twee bullshit etc… but as i listened it quickly soured realized yeah this is like those but there’s something about it that just feels kind of way shittier? shallow saccharine artifice but not in a cool way, started to dip into the uncanny valley for me if that makes sense
it’s upsetting because on paper i should love this, the instrumentals are very good but they should just be irish instead of trying to be american it’s way less cool to be american dude. anyway got one listen down and that’s enough for me gonna put on more adventurous (should be on the list instead of this) and go from there for the day
