Dehors Novembre

Dehors Novembre is the second studio album of Quebec rock band Les Colocs. I don't know why it is also mentioned as Senegalese music as it does not sound in any way related music from that country (Baaba Maal, Youssou N'Dour, Touré Kunda or Orchestra Baobab). It is a much Senegalese sounding music as hiphop artist MC Solaar. This band is more inspired by 1990s world music alternative rock bands like Les Négresses Vertes and Mano Negra. Roots, blues, gypsy and reggae combined to get an organic music mix. In that genre this is a nice album.

Quebec single-handedly keeping the Canadian entries interesting. Like hmmmmm do I want more identical fucking post-punk, emo, and slow alt-rock out of Toronto? No, I do not. I want something like this, that's actually trying to do interesting stylistic work, getting adventurous with things.

Terrific listen! I spent a lot of time in Montreal in years past and loved hearing some Quebeçois music. Lost of interesting things happen in that music scene. Glad to have had the chance to hear something that would not normally have been heard in my neck of the woods.

I enjoyed this a lot. Good music transcends language. Now I hope I don’t find out it’s super racist or something 😂

Before reading Wikipedia article: "What a fun funky album, not sure what he's saying but it's a vibe!" After reading Wikipedia article and doing some research: "...Oh."

Given that this was Quebecois instead of English speaking Canada, I had hopes that this would break away from the "generic 90s Canadian alt rock" and have more of its own identity, but unfortunately it's more in the style of blues/roots rock that we're used to in the user list. Some of the songs have a chanson influence and this was by far the most interesting part of the album, so it's a shame Les Colocs didn't lean into that more . This is French language, which I don't understand, so I can't really connect to any of the lyrics. The band broke up a few years after this because the lead singer killed himself, so maybe the lyrics are important. It is also quite lyrically heavy. The first song, which is also by far the longest at almost 9:30, was easily the highlight here and I quite enjoyed it. I wish more of the album followed in its stead instead of flipping to blues and reggae immediately after. Should it be on the main list: No Top 3 songs: Belzébuth, La Maladresse, Dehors Novembre

Extra points for clarinet

Interesting, certainly not dull, eclectic maybe to a fault. Lyrically all lost on me but I can't exactly hold that against them.

This a bit of a weird album. It has some reggae, some blues, some rock. Some English, but mostly French. Quite fun though

I'm initially hearing a bit of what could be a modern-day Madness + Barenaked Ladies. But it's the kind of album that while it plays out alright for me, nothing stuck out too much either way. e.g. Did I enjoy it? ...I guess so? A little? Lack of memorable hooks and/or killer songs relegate this to something I might forget that I listened to in an hour (and that sounds far more sarcastic than I actually mean - it might be an album that upon repeated listens sinks in a lot more?) This concludes the most milquetoast review/commentary I've written in 5 years :P 5/10 3 stars IMO: Belonged in the book? No.

Well worth the listen just to experience U-Turn after everything that preceded it.

I knew this was Quebec music when they started singing. I've listened to a bunch of Quebecois music and enjoy it but this was just okay. I'm sure a good Quebecois band should be on here I just don't know which. My personal rating: 3/5 My rating relative to the list: 3/5 Should this have been included on the original list? No.

At first I was angry because of the French but this album has a lot of fun styles across it that kept my attention

Montreal, Canadian Alt Rock Another album with no Wikipedia page... The album cover is nice, unique, interesting. The music is in French, so lyrics.... I have no idea, but the music is very nice to listen to. I enjoyed the album as a whole and would listen again. Rating: 3/5

Errrr I mean yes it was different but I feel like I wasn’t able to form a strong opinion? I didn’t hate it so I’ll give it that but I couldn’t really get into it.

The blend of French vocals and bluegrass instrumentals on this LP didn't really entice me – there's no denying the artistry or execution, just not my thing at all.

Dehors Novembre is weird, obviously doesn't help that I don't speak Quebecois French but the style is all over the place too, sometimes it's indie, sometimes it's reggae-adjacent, sometimes it's vaudeville, sometimes it's radio pop, and I don't think it does any of it well. 2.

More strange Canadian indie/alt. This time in French.

Decent rock album, didn’t hate it but there wasn’t really anything that stood out enough for me to want to come back to it. Maybe some of the appeal is lost on me because I don’t speak French.

This is really 3rd rate puerile stuff. If it had been from 1980 you could say it was ahead of it's time but it's just copying a bundle of genres. Awful.
