Preacher's Daughter is the debut studio album by the American singer-songwriter and record producer Ethel Cain. It was released on May 12, 2022, through her independent record label Daughters of Cain. The album was entirely written and produced by Cain, with assistance from Steven Mark Colyer and Matthew Tomasi on certain tracks. Preacher's Daughter is a concept album with a narrative that centers on fictional characters, exploring themes such as family trauma and sexual violence. It was inspired by the artist's personal life as the daughter of a deacon. Sonically, it experiments with Americana, dark ambient, roots rock, and elements of several other genres. Cain openly shared that she was inspired by the artist Florence Welch throughout her music career and her vocal performance on the album. Fans suggested that her and Lana Del Rey share the same visual aesthetic and music production, with Cain having the raw and violent Americana and Rey having the glamorized and romanticized Americana. It incorporates predominant Southern Gothic imagery with religious and American aesthetics. Three singles—"Gibson Girl", "Strangers", and "American Teenager"—preceded Preacher's Daughter between March and April 2022, the latter accompanied by a music video. To promote the album, Cain embarked on her first two concert tours, the Freezer Bride Tour in 2022 and the Blood Stained Blonde Tour in 2023, through North America, Europe, and Oceania. Upon its release, Preacher's Daughter was met with acclaim from music critics, with praise towards its storytelling and songwriting, and Cain's vocal performance. Many critics named it one of the best albums of the year, while Paste included it on a mid-decade ranking. A standout for reviewers, "American Teenager" was deemed by Billboard and Rolling Stone one of the best LGBTQ songs of all time. The album has also garnered Cain a cult following online. Following its release via physical formats in April 2025, it reached the top-10 on the record charts of Australia, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Preacher's Daughter is the first part of a trilogy of albums, which Cain intends to portray through a series of novels and an accompanying film. A prequel to the album, Willoughby Tucker, I'll Always Love You, was released in August 2025.

Damn, American Teenager has a few bars. These lyrics have some edge on Western nights. The music feels more like a place setting for the lyrics, sort of platforms or backgrounds. Wow I am so invested in this, Family Tree is such a haunting story. Thoroughfare has some of the most emotionally expressive poetry I have heard in a long time. but the turn into Gibson Girl is totally chilling, made even more shocking by the song preceding it. Jesus and then Ptolemaea is even more terrifying, but the lyrics are super washy sounding and really buried into the landscape. That shit was crazy! will need a relisten.
Perfect album
Just based on the cover I was expecting this to be some dark, alt-country type stuff (which I was looking forward to, because I like that kind of stuff) but it was more of a dark, yet still somewhat pop sounding album. Shades of Chappel Roan but much more dark and brooding. I liked it quite a bit, need to listen some more.
Really enjoyed this album. Beautiful, haunting and surprisingly dark in places, with a really distinctive atmosphere throughout. Loved how it could go from these gorgeous, almost dreamy moments into something genuinely unsettling. A great example of how good some of the new music that is missing from the list. My only criticism is that it’s a bit on the long side for my personal taste, but definitely one I’ll be coming back to.

Expected a country album of some such but for more weird haunted Gen Z pop. Didn’t hate it but others do it better and the subgenre is somewhat lost on me

Didn’t gel with this one at all, it mostly just annoyed me, so at least it made me feel something.
About as bland and generic as it gets for a pop LP. Very little melodically or instrumentally to distinguish one track from another, especially given how the whole album sounds like it was recorded in a cavern with a mic at the entrance. 75 whole minutes of nothing but reverb and default Ableton presets, exhausting listen really.
From the few things I know about Ethel Cain, I really wasn't expecting her music to sound like very echoy Olivia Rodrigo. Thought my Spotify started autoplaying some different album when "American Teenager" began. Interesting stuff in here, but it's buried in an unholy combination of a person trying to pull "pristine modern pop production" and "crank every FL Studio reverb plugin you can find to max" at the same time. Some cool stuff in here ("Ptolemaea"), but generally not something for me.
Not great. It seems like everyone ever has recorded an americana album, most of them pretty crappy, and this is one of them. It does nothing interesting, just kind of happens and then stops. I liked when it stopped.
