really? why did i say publicly i would listen to all of these... it takes a lot of effort to be this bad
Got a soft spot for this kind of English pop
Artist #411 on last.fm but never heard this record Some classic tunes here! Nothing wrong with a bit of Leppard!
I've listened to most of this album, once, in 2007.
I have never previously streamed Depeche Mode! I'm sure fans love this album. It's just not my thing.
Two days in a row, a famous, well regarded artist that I've never heard. I mean I thought it was fine, probably not going back for a repeat listen soon but i'll check out some other Elvis Costello stuff.
I've listened to Iron Maiden 7 times, but never this record. Artist #1498 pre this album It's average yeah? Surely there are better Iron Maiden albums.
Never listened to this album. Probably heard the songs from it but post 2006 I've only listened to Billy Joel 7 times. Artist #1459 pre listening to this A bit "musical theatre" for my taste tbh
Listened to Suede once in 2019 Artist #6989 on Last.fm Nice surprise, this was pretty good.
Of course I've heard it. Many many times. Funnily enough Nirvana aren't high in my post 2006 (last.fm era) listening stats. Artist #156
I've never listened to Yes before. Huh. Interesting.
Never heard of 'em... Interesting
Yet another artist I've never listened to! Nice discovery, I'd listen to more More like 3.5
No
Unbelievable as it seems, I've never listened to this record. The hits from this are amazing, the vocal only track is great too!
Again, never scrobbled. I can appreciate this. I can hear the work that went into it. The stuff with vocals was cool... I just don't know
Artist #886 on last.fm 15 scrobbles This record is not terrible but overrated IMO
Scrobbled 1 time Artist #4820 Nice vibes, like the jazzy backing tracks
Who knew? John Martyn is actually Artist #1667 on my scrobbles Never heard this album though Hmm, disappointed actually - I was really looking forward to this one.
Believe it or not I've only listened to Deep Purple 3 times - 3! Artist #2556 I was expecting a whole lot more metal sounding minor stuff... this is like good time rock yeah?
260 streams for The Beatles but only one listen through Sgt Peppers - seems criminal doesn't it? Artist #64 Who am I to give this album anything less...
Another artist I had heard of, but never heard. It was surprisingly enjoyable considering my usual tastes, great for a chilled evening. Currently sitting at artist #1207
Never listened to this artist before It's OK I guess.
Another one from the never listened batch! This was surprisingly enjoyable though
Some nice stuff on here but some super indulgence too
I can appreciate the effort here - didn't do it for me though
OK I have listened to Kanye before but just putting it out there that I'm not doing this as a fan any longer Artist #108 on my last.fm but i've only heard some of this album before
Yep. Enjoyed. Artist #992 on last.fm
I loved this, great record!
Not a reggae fan
Last fm artist #477 I have a feeling this album has not aged well. Either that or we've all grown up and realised how shit these macho rappers are in the shadow of some of what conscious hip hop is doing. Drags a bit actually. I found myself wanting it to be over towards the end - checked out
Decent record, I don't think any of these are their best songs though
I can see why people love it, grooves and great tunes.
I love Tom
Dragged after a while
It was fine.
It cannot be true, but my stats say I've never heard this record. What!? Artist #123 in my Last.fm (now #114)
Breath and King of Pain are great, the rest... meh...
Don't think I even know who this band is. Not an album I needed to hear before I died.
The Beatles are artist #61 currently on my last.fm but, if i can believe the stats, i somehow skipped over listening to this record!? Not my favourite work by the band but still solid
Two Bruce in one week! Artist #114 - an album I've listened to twice before Ah so hard! It's not perfect but it's pretty bloody good!
Some cool beats. Just not something I can get into for an hour.
I mean it's fine but I don't have the desire to listen again ever
1 previous listen... to 1 song
Artist #411 on last.fm but never heard this record Some classic tunes here! Nothing wrong with a bit of Leppard!
Streamed once in 2017 haha - song wasn't on this record
Artist #331 but hadn't listened to this album before
Prior to listening, I'd only heard one BS song in my life, "Pepper" Was this a noise experiment?
Oh I know this record #49 all time streams I listened to this a lot when it came out, not so much in the streaming era Love this record, forgot how much so
R.E.M. are #148 on my all time streams but I've never heard this album!
Apparently I streamed "Everyday People" twice in 2016. Random fact of the day. Not my thing.
Really looking forward to this! On last.fm Sabbath are #609 in my all time artists but really should be higher Thoroughly enjoyed!
Currently #818 on my artist charts. I know this is supposed to be a classic but it'll be different listening after his lockdown tantrum. Pretty plain.
Some fun jams but ultimately nothing more than background music
At first I was thinking wtf is this... but it grew on me
I'm biased. This is one of my favourite debut albums ever. And to think there was better SOAD albums to follow
Heard of but never heard this band. Enjoyed this record, would go back for more
God I hope it's better than the last one of his on this list Artist #877 currently on last.fm Update: Yep. Much better.
It was probably ground breaking in 1978, now it sounds like cookie cutter punk
I expected to like this album so much more.
Not bad. I knew a lot of these tracks already.
I can appreciate this, i think, i just don't get much from it.
1001 albums to bore you to death
Great record. I love it.
Background music at best
It's alright.
2.5 - some amazing lyrics here, probably a friday night album with wine...
Some enjoyable stuff however I could only find maybe half of the tracks online
Unbelievably, for how ubiquitous this was when I was living in London, I've never actually heard this record. First couple of tracks were cool but it's all a bit samey same.
It was fine but I've heard better from Ella
It's astounding to me that this isn't a best of. Just another record.
Got a soft spot for this kind of English pop
not for me
There must be better Elvis albums than this
I'm hearing more Rolling Stones through this than previously in my life. This is the 2nd best of the two Stones' albums so far.
Beck is a legend. I should listen to him more.
See previous day's review haha Still not my favourite Beck album but a good one
Some great songs, some borderline comic (i imagine unintentionally)
Some of the beats here were great but 80s/90s rapping still doesn't do it for me
Yeah I like me some Cure...
Probably a 3.5 but it did end up background music kind of
Energy. Love it.
A genuine discovery! I enjoyed this so much
Some cool grooves but mainly elevator music for me
Nah. There's some cool slacker/shoegaze sure, but this is a bit boring.
Some classic rock here. Takes me back.
Impeccable production. Just a bit too long.
Itβs rem sure, love the band but, outside of Orange Crush I wasnβt taken with this record overly
Nice. Some cool tunes I didn't even realise they sang, feeling generous today.
Got a blindspot for ELO, nearly gave this 5 stars before I listened
That was pretty much the same track on repeat yeah?
Dig it
Honestly, wtf
Positive start but all a bit the samey for me
It was fine but I didn't expect it to be *this* country
Sounded exactly like I thought it would, that 7 min song near the end went on forever though
Why? The only band I've ever fallen asleep watching live... This was marginally less rubbish that I expected. Marginally.
For an album with 18 tracks is wasn't that bad actually.
Paint by numbers pub rock
Did I *have* to hear it? - 2.5 rounded down
Who is/are Maxwell? Pretty funky actually, enjoyable but not a repeat listen candidate
According to my records, it's 13 years since I last listened to this all the way through. Let's go! #32 all time artist listens
really? why did i say publicly i would listen to all of these... it takes a lot of effort to be this bad
I was expecting better from Iggy
Probably haven't listened to this in full in more than 20 years. My appreciation has grown.
Tired trope the old man loves young girl thing... not for me
Fine. Kinda blends into one song after a while.
All time classic. It's like a greatest hits record.
More enjoyable than i expected
Iconic and timeless
I'd never heard an Adele album, and I expected this to be outstanding. Her voice and control is, no doubt, but with few exceptions I thought the songs were pretty average.
42 songs is taking the piss.
So is a lot of this album
Soft spot for Uncle Neil
Solid
Alright I suppose
Meh
I should listen to more Wilco
Amazing hit songs and a bunch of filler
The music is cool. But the lyrics are rubbish. And the music belongs to someone else anyway.
I don't jazz enough to know if this is "good", it was rather uninteresting to me
I would rather listen to almost anything else besides reggae
a 2 hour live album is a rubbish way to be introduced to a band...
I found this fascinating but there's little chance I'd ever re-listen :)
Arctic Monkeys B Side collection
Iβm sure this hasnβt aged well. Unless itβs intended to be comical?
Rap is better when the performer has something to talk about other than their own gretaness.
Nah
Starting to think I should have signed up for 1001 EPs to listen to. Some of these are just an hour of the same song.
I can appreciate when something is just good. I saw the track list and thought it was a greatest hits record
#62 all time artist on my last.fm This is a debut album. A DEBUT. And arguably their best.
Thoroughly enjoyed this one
#94 all time artist Never heard this album somehow - loved it though
I have actually never previously heard "Free Bird" - i know right...
I read somewhere that Neil wanted Side B to go first so that's how I listened. 3 of the most boring songs I've heard from NY... thankfully saved by Side A, somewhat.
Yeah Iβll listen to more PJ Harvey
Not bad for a band Iβd never heard
Dated garbage
Surprised by how much I enjoyed this
I'd written this band off based on their singles, there's some depth here
Not my favourite of Tom's but it contains some of my favourite songs!
Run of the mill Metallica B-Sides
Incredible to fit so many good songs on an album
Indie borecore. Big fan of some of their peers but struggled to get through this.
Initially really enjoyable but the extended instrumental sections started to wear after a while
jazz
According to my stats I listened to this 3 times in 2011 and never since. I'm guessing there's gonna be a heap more hip hop in this generator, hope more of it is like this
Masterful collaboration between Cash and Rubin
Not quite what I was expecting
Late 90s and early 00s I listened to so much of the Who, even saw them live [well two of them] - since then, only 17 plays apparently... Some great songs, some strange inclusions.
Great songs with such an iconic 80s sound. -1 for the awful power ballad
Not for me
3 stars is a lot more than I would have given it at the time of release. I appreciate, rather than like, this album
Solid grooves here
Lots of fun
Recent events colour my thoughts. I will listen to all 1001 albums but some are hard work.
Sometimes interesting but definitely not my thing
Great tunes, some of those lyrics though...
It's been too long, this is a cracking debut!
yawn
I expected more from Tom, this album felt pretty bland
Interesting
not what i was expecting nor very enjoyable
Some funky stuff here but with time other parts sound borderline comedic. Last spoken word piece was powerful though.
Singles are deadset smashes. The rest was more psychedelic than Iβd imagined
I can appreciate the band, but they don't do much for me.
Garbage. Such a tough listen. Would almost prefer reggae
Some great tracks... some filler too
It's good, in parts. I don't love this kind of stuff though generally.
Nothing outstanding for me
I hate ska almost as much as reggae and bad hip hop
Not what I wanted it to be
Better than I expected background music
Started ok, a bit much by the end
Pretty good
Just always sounds like toy story haha
Some stuff on here I really liked
Nice
Might have been a 4 on a different day
Occasionally interesting but not anything Iβd ever listen to again
Some great songs on here... but I've heard it sooooo much
Nah
60s pop by numbers
The guitar on the title track π³
A bit too kitsch for me
Some classics and some boring country adjacent strum alongs
Classic funk, but a score without the movie is not my thing
The last few songs were excellent, but you have to wade through a lot to get there. I had high expectations too which doesnβt help
I thought I liked the Fleet Foxes, this was pretty boring though
Music π lyrics and skits π
Better than so much of the similarly styled stuff on this list but the records are toooooo long.
Just all a little bit dull and boring isn't it?
I expected Iβd love thisβ¦ didnβt get me
Actually pretty cool
Interested to hear more SY
Got better as it went along, especially the acoustic stuff towards the end
Some very cool stuff, took a while to get going though
I've enjoyed Sepultura albums more than this
Second Traffic album in this list. I'd argue neither are vital.
Didn't do much for me
Side B better than Side A
Not what I was expecting
Some beautiful songs here
Yeah ok
The music on most of these tracks was cool but some of the lyrics... i may have missed something but i was expecting more from Common
Cool. I like it.
bit bland
Loved it. #477 on my all time artists
Not my favourite of the LZ albums
6 tracks in and I was concerned I wouldn't make it through the record but it gets better... the first Genesis album I've listened to in the streaming era.
Bit bland...
Enjoyed this far more than the last Sepultura album on the list
Some parts it's "this is amazing, listen to that", other time "what the f is going on?"
69 songs is a lot. I nearly didn't even attempt it but I swore I'd listen to all these albums. I didn't enjoy it 95% of the time, and as you'd expect it is massively quantity over quality... but it's not the worst thing i've heard on this list - and it blows my mind that nearly 3 hours later I'm willing to give more than 1 star
Better music than a majority of the hip hop on this list but the lyrics, it's still the lyrics - I don't get the acceptance of sexism and homophobia, I just don't.
Funky, although background for me
Started slow but i came to really enjoy
So good. Artist #334 on last.fm, but they will rise!
Never listened to Devendra Banhart before... is was ok
Cool for what it was
Reminds me of family car trips. Not a bad album per se, just not my thing
dig it
Iconic sounds
It's a great record still
Neil does it well
If i'd bought this on the strength of "There She Goes" I'd be terribly disappointed
Disposable power pop
This is what I've been wanting from all the hip hop so far, finally one that delivers #299 albums in.
Some truly classic songs, would make an amazing 6 track EP
Fine but not amazing
I don't get the Black Keys.
It's no Morning Glory
I thought I'd hate it, it was actually kinda interesting
I'm a bit confused... more interesting than your average 2 / more average than a good 3 hmmm
Nah
Some great songs but not my top JH album by a long shot.
More enjoyable than most of these croony types, still not my thing
Could have been about half as long. Sounds to me like the EDM version of a jam band.
Not much of an AC/DC fan myself but hard to argue this isnβt a 5 star album.
Got better as it went along
Unnecessary self congratulations
Never heard of this band before but it was a nice surprise!
Don't understand the hype tbh
Cool for what it is, some very funky stuff. Not for me though.
Slow start for mine, I sometimes think I like the idea of liking the band more than the band... the album gathers speed though and ends up a pretty good listen
The most unexpected 5 star album ever
I really thought I was gonna love thisβ¦ butβ¦ I dunno, it didnβt do it for me
So dated. The man has skills obviously but I prefer my hip hop with intelligent lyrics and generally free of misogyny and homophobia
Pretty bland 90s indie rock
I get the love i suppose but The Go-Betweens have never really done it for me
Never heard a Grateful Dead album before. Probably not going back.
#27 all time artist on Last.fm Currently 525 scrobbles - 44 for this album alone, but apparently only 1 full play through in the last 17 years? I listened to this album a lot when it came out, I can't be unbiased about it!
Some great playing here, Iβm not normally an instrumental album person but the organ playing is amazing.
#20 all time band in my Last.fm, this is one of my desert island albums. Probably responsible for me wanting to be in a band.
I kinda wish I discovered the Smiths when I was growing up so I could enjoy them... before...
I haven't listened to this in such a long time but i forgot what i high point it was - a glorious return. I get the feeling it's a true "the best 15 of the 40 we demoed" which gives it strength that later (imo) bloated albums don't have.
Aww like 2.5, some of this sounds amazing, some of it sounds like they duplicated 6 minutes worth of loops and forgot to edit it or finish the song.
I don't think it's the amazingly beautiful lost gem that some reviews said, but their are some nice songs here. Better than a lot of the singer songwriters fare I've heard in this list so far. Really wishing for half stars lately but anyway 3.5
Great band, wanted to like this more than I did though
Enjoyed this, mostly.
Interesting concept, works much better with the visual but I still dig the sounds
Definitely the 70s
Some cool stuff, nothing really stood out. Iβve developed an appreciation for sonic youth via this challenge though
This sort of rapping I can handle.
Like a lot of 80s/90s albums it's a tad bloated, some of the themes have aged poorly - still a decent listen
I swore I'd listen to every one of these 1000 albums, and some have tested me for sure, especially ones where i have a moral objection. Some of the best songs ever sang by one of the worst kinds of person, I can't separate music from life. Sorry. 1/5
ho hum
yep. weird.
Wow, I expected way more...
Not my favourite of theirs, but neat background music
Not as bad as i was expecting, but not something i'd listen to again by choice
Unremarkable considering the talent that put it together
Had it on in the background, best it stayed there.
So, whoever put the list together knows someone in this band yeah?
With very few exceptions, up tempo MC > down tempo MC Too often her voice is expected to do the heavy lifting over song ideas that probably shouldn't have made it past demo stage.
Grew on me over the course of the album... did I *have* to hear it before I died though?
Grew on me as it went
Same dilemma. Some of the best songs ever but it feels icky listening to mj
Did not enjoy this at all
I wanted it to be better, in my mind (before I heard it) it was a certain 5. Turns out to be 3.45, rounded down.
Like. Itβs fine. Not really exciting
Has its moments.
Not for me
Near perfect record. -1 for hey Joe π₯±
Interesting but not essential
Itβs like a cool song thatβs just really long
Iβm so conflicted. At the time I thought this was one of the best produced records Iβd ever heard. Of course modern day Kanye is a problematic concept and it would take quite a backflip to change my current opinion
The good is brilliant but -1 for the car song and a couple of others
I don't mind Pulp, got Jarvis' book on my "to read" list... but i expected more. If this was a vinyl I'd guess it was side B before I heard something I liked - after that it was OK.
Thereβs some great performances on here, a different but very cool band
If all the tracks had been produced by the Neptunes and the lyrics werenβt written by a horny 16 year old, this would have potential
meh
Loved it
It may have been different in its day but I find this kinda thing so boring now. Like a weeknight open mic jam where every one playing thinks theyβre amazing and the audience is asleep.
Not bad actually
Pretty ho hum for an "experimental" record. How can you write 2 minute psych songs and have them be boring?
Started incredibly, what an opening. The rest was a bit bland for me
something about Arcade Fire really bothers me. Bores me even. I find it hard to be objective in this rating.
I appreciate more than like this band.
Not for me. Sounds like an hire long loop. I understand this was vital for the development of rap but it doesnβt do much for me
Some of the greatest R&B tracks ever surrounded by d-grade ballads and some questionable lyrics. I was leaning towards 4 but *juuuust* can't get there
This is what I want from an album. 30-40 minutes of well written music. It's only not 5/5 cause some of the lyrics are a bit... um. Let's just say there was better to come from the band.
Some great songs but about 6 tracks too long
Still sounds fresh
This list has made me a fan of Bjork
Some cracking songs on here, also others that sound very dated.
Side B better than Side A. Probably a 3.5 rounded down.
Some of the Music β a lot of the lyrics π
Samey same
Pleasantly surprised - enjoyed this!
Cool enough
Enjoyable
Honestly - what was that?
Not usually my thing, but this was pretty cool
What a trip
I thought this kind of thing was brilliant in the 90s. Not so much now.
I appreciate, rather than like, Talking Heads it seems
Too much harmonica π
Some great songs, some far too long thought bubbles.
The thing about getting these albums randomly is it really depends on the mood you're in and today, this album kinda bored me.
Not my thing, I appreciate a lot of work would go into this though.
Constant Craving is a banger. 3.5
I canβt really sum up my feelings about VM but this review comes close: Morrisonβs career arc looks something like this: He went from being a brash teenage wunderkind with his band Them, to a promising young solo artist (βBrown Eyed Girlβ), to a moody, soulful poet casually creating masterpieces (βAstral Weeksβ and βMoondanceβ), to a middle-aged curmudgeon showcasing occasional moments of brilliance (βCommon Oneβ), until he slowly devolved into a boozy-uncle type, cranking out boilerplate blues LPs while leaning on his earlier legacy to fill concert halls.
Agree with another reviewer who said it often threatens to be great but never quite gets there, not a very promising start but it got better
Iβm sure it takes incredible skill but I canβt connect with anything here. And Iβm sure itβs not meant for me and thatβs ok.
Trim a few from the middle but otherwise pleasantly surprised
Kinda cool
It's cool but I always love a vocal
Huh... first Pet Shop Boys album I've ever listened to, apparently. Well since 2006 anyway - thanks last.fm Artist #1578
Another one? Actually this oneβs better
The Stooges currently sit at #744 in my all time listening chart and I reckon its all come from the 1001 generator... I get that they were important and bands i love wouldn't be around without them, but these records on their own merit... I'm disappointed.
It's been so long since I listened to Jimi. It used to be everyday... it's a welcome return. #208 all time on last.fm
I was *really* digging it until the last 2 tracks, so nearly a 4.
I cannot separate art from the artist
I have a few of Supergrass' later albums, I prefer those Artist #802
My Dad loves Elvis - I've listened to about 3 of his records. Elvis as a cultural phenomenon seems amazing, as a musician that I enjoy a little less so. That said, this album isn't bad.
this list needs an edit
Love a bit of CCR
First half 3 stars, maybe 2.5. Second half 4
I was never a rave person, it just didn't appeal. A lot of this sounds like someone holding down the demo button on an expensive keyboard. Music for another life and time I suspect
I can appreciate this is probably good, or better than. I just donβt like it.
WTF... this list...
Iβm biased. Tom can do no wrong.
Most blues jams sound the same to me
Some clever writing, but still country. I think I heard the same song 4 times.
A lot of skill but i prefer vocals with my jams
Liked it more than I thought
Great background party music
A great album from a genre I normally canβt stand
Iβve got a lot of time for RT. Not sure this is his defining work but still good
It's so earnest I can still taste it 20+ years later
Jam bands meh
Nearly a 4
I was a big Ryan Adams fan once, Iβm firmly On the downside these days but there are some decent tracks here
No thanks
Iβd love to see the music Zappa would have produced in the 2000s, such a visionary and artist in the truest sense. In saying that, this isnβt my favourite of his work.
I had such high hopes too
Beware of high hopes
Great blues is phenomenal. Other blues is⦠meh
Some songs better than I remember, some far worse. Rating boosted by having recently seen Korn live, a 3.5 going to an admittedly generous 4
I saw the cover, and the amount of tracks and thought "here we go, another overly long, self indulgent record" - how wrong I was, experimental and entertaining. Nice work Mr Cat.
I genuinely don't understand why this is on this list
I donβt like reggae, but there are some classic songs here.
Chat GPT, write me some enigmatic lyrics an unspecified journey to a majestic place. Don't worry about making sense, just make it go for 40 minutes. The music is interesting though.
2.5
Man, Iβd never heard Graceland but Iβd heard all about it. The bar was high, and at least on first listen, not really met.
I mean. It's fine.
Enjoyed
Soul goodness
Iβve come to expect a lot from Paul Westerberg, this was good but not great. 3.5 rounded down.
Didnβt hate it, didnβt love it
Hahahahahahahaβ¦ oh itβs not a joke? Oops
Kinda indistinguishable from all indie folk pop 1994-2004. Enjoyed the 2nd half a little more than the first Artist #771 on last.fm - never heard this album before
I have one play for Q Tip in my library... an Elton John cover. This is kinda cool though, jazzy influences, the kind of hip hop Iβd listen to if I could only listen to hip hop.
I randomly listened to one song from this band in 2016. It's raw I suppose, not particularly my thing. I love punk, but I dislike reggae enough for this to be ruined haha. Currently at #3500 on my all time last.fm artists with 3 lifetime plays
Production β Flows β Misogyny π ββοΈ Homophobia π ββοΈ Didnβt age well, I know why this is important - especially the political stances which are at once spine tingling when you hear the visceral tone and cheapened by the attitude to women. I wish it was the former that had lived on in hip hop instead of the latter
I would probably like it but I can only find 2 songsβ¦
It doesnβt (destroy) and you donβt (need to hear it) Google βfree loop packβ - itβll take less time
And just like that Iβm 16 again, on a school bus for an excursion to somewhere and my mate passes me his Discman and says, βlisten to thisβ. It was my intro to punk, I learned the riff to βCone Out and Playβ - it opened the door for me to Green Day, which brought me to Bad Religion and then Propagandhi. A love affair to be sure. I didnβt keep up with the Offspring, but I appreciate what they did for me. 5 stars - less for the album than what it meant to my future life.
If youβre gonna country, you might as well full country.
Ok, Iβm taking it out on this piece of subpar garbage. This has been a shit week for albums (bar one day) can I get something not from the bargain bin of music history please?
So many great songs in the Bee Gees catalgoue, not many of them on this record. This *can't* be the most essential BG record surely.
Ok I see where Weezer got their ideas⦠Honestly the last 20 albums must have averaged 2 stars. I might be kinder in other circumstances but this is an easy 2 for me, again.
I can see why this might have been influential. I just didnβt like it very much.
Surprisingly enjoyable for the most part
620 albums in and I'm starting to fatigue....
Vanilla oasis
I do find edited live records somewhat contrived but there are some cool tracks here.
Why is this here? Misogyny and homophobia seem to be par for the course in a lot of these 90s records. They havenβt aged well, sure, but the question probably should be why they were ever βacceptableβ
Started with promise, finished in a blaze of "meh"
That was not pleasant, nor is it supposed to be but Iβd be happy to die without hearing this tbh
The reviews had my hopes up! It was ok, not a classic imho
This gotta better as it went, felt like two albums almost, first part was good, second was great
I'd venture there are very few 5 star double albums, this is a very solid 4, the best bits for a single album would make an amazing piece of work
Hard to judge when I can only find 4 songs online
I love instrumental Zappa
Unessential
Some brilliance, some garbage. Interesting strategy.
I think this is the actual link https://open.spotify.com/album/4m7Du1Wc5NpDQkaC2QXsAM?si=d6ISo-17SdONvLadKhEtqA I don't even know how to review this - kinda cool but also not my thing
Well that was something
Important, but ultimately too samey to be a 4. I love audiobooks and jazz, just not at the same time
Hypnotising
ok but looooooong
nah
Like interesting but sort of boring too?
Yep, it's jazz
Background music for me
I cannot put myself in the 60s, I'd reckon this would have turned some heads though. I do love me some Zappa, this isn't my favourite ere though.
That was a journeyβ¦
It's jazz alright
The early 2000s are increasingly seeming not a good time for music
It took some research but Iβve been convinced of the reasons for inclusion, I just didnβt like it much.
Itβs country, but not the kind I hate. This is bearable.
Sounds ambitious but generally fails to land
I canβt tell you how much I hated the Streets when I first heard them and for years afterβ¦ but then I started listening to the lyrics and realised the raps were basically beat port audiobooks. I donβt revisit often, but the record deserves its place here
My favourite bit was when it was over.
Sounds like someone kept pushing the demo button on the casio
Not terrible but not for me.
So much better than I was expecting, i might have actually enjoyed some of this.
I've had so many people tell me how great this bloke is, but i was pretty bored tbh... maybe i'll go read the lyrics again
Torn here. I am not a maybe fan of industrial music, but when I think of it this is pretty much the archetypal sound. Jesus Built My Hotrod is still a banger after all these years.
Yeah that was great
Like many of these albums lately, not my usual thing but you can't deny how well this is put together.
and i'm asleep...
I didnβt get It
Less exciting than I remembered
Initially found it interesting but it dragged. Group comments about the sincerity of the βsupposedβ parody of authoritarianism worry me.
I like listening to Jack White talk about musicβ¦
Not atrocious, just not my thing
Interesting, I suppose. Glad to find out the final track was "bonus" track and free myself from listening to it
Pales in comparison to what heβd produce later
zzzzzz
Title track is a banger, the rest is patchy
Enjoyed that
Sounds like a bunch of demo ideas from voice memos
You're all artists. I get it.
Cool tunes but I skipped the talking bits, does that make me a bad person?
Production is funky as, musically this as interesting as any of the hip hop I've heard across 700+ albums of this challenge. But, maaaan... the lyrics... even if they're tongue in cheek I just... can't. And that's the most generous interpretation. At worst? Well...
Incredible. What an album!
Loved the inclusion of the Wilcannia Mob, look em up!
You have to be a pretty legendary act to need more than 1 album on this list. I donβt know that KoL deserve that honourβ¦
aka Buffalo Stance and not much else of note. I expected more tbh
Yawn
Kinda cool but not my thing. Its sounds repetitive to my uneducated ears, and Iβm sure it has a devoted audience.
Started out with promiseβ¦
Not a massive fan of cover bands
I still have "One Step Closer" on CD single. #339 on my all time Last.fm artists but I reckon I played this album more than a few times pre-scrobble era
Like this is good blues but... eh I don't get blues, maybe aside from Robert Johnson...
Cool beats. Atrocious lyrics.
Pretty boring record considering I actually like a lot of what Iβve heard from the doors
The art 3/5 the artist 0/5 Half decent tunes for a racist
π₯±
It's OK
I feel like Iβve heard this album 5 times on this list already
Obviously a lot of these albums have some kind of historical significance but based purely on listening enjoyment there are a lot of sub 3 star listens for me.
God I'm bored and I still haven't got to the 9 minute song. It want to be good. update: it wasn't
Iβve been stumped lately why some of these are even included. Cue GPT Lloyd Cole and the Commotionsβ debut album Rattlesnakes (1984) is included in 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die because it is widely regarded as one of the defining albums of 1980s indie rock and jangle pop. The album is praised for its intelligent, literary lyrics, sophisticated songwriting, and melodic, guitar-driven sound, which blends elements of folk, pop, and new wave. Key reasons for its inclusion: 1. Lyricism β Lloyd Coleβs lyrics are witty, literate, and full of literary and cinematic references (e.g., Truffaut, Norman Mailer, Evelyn Waugh), setting him apart from many of his contemporaries. 2. Jangle Pop Sound β Influenced by artists like Bob Dylan, Roxy Music, and The Velvet Underground, Rattlesnakes helped define the jangly, melodic guitar sound that became influential in indie music. 3. Strong Songwriting β Tracks like Perfect Skin, Forest Fire, and Are You Ready to Be Heartbroken? are considered classics, blending introspective storytelling with catchy hooks. 4. Influence on Later Artists β The album had a lasting impact on British indie and alternative bands, influencing acts such as Belle & Sebastian, The Go-Betweens, and Teenage Fanclub. 5. Critical Acclaim β Upon its release, Rattlesnakes received widespread praise and has since been recognised as one of the great debut albums in UK music history. Its inclusion in 1001 Albums highlights its status as an essential listen for anyone interested in literate, melodic pop with emotional depth. I still only liked one song
Not usually a fan but this has a cool sound
Just as I was losing hope - a genuine gem of a discover, thank you!
I don't mind me a bit of yacht rock but this got pretty sleepy
Nope.
Capably executed songs by talented musos in a genre I canβt stand
That was enjoyable
Interesting to be exposed to, but if Iβm honest, Iβm never gonna listen to this again in my life
Oasis b-sides the world didnβt need
I mean, I didnβt hate it - and with the band name and cover I really wanted to
oh Kanye, a study in how to throw it all away. Was always gonna be a 1. I can't separate the artist from the art.
On first listen it kinda washes over - but it was enough to maybe get a repeat listen sometime
Itβs taken me 3 days to get through this and itβs still not over
That was fun
Nick Cave-y
Less dynamic than I recall
Sometimes you just want a record where people say what they wanna say and leave. This > a 30 track skit laden album anyday. The lyrics could be better though π
I always find Mr Simon very earnest and self important. Start of the record it was a 2, gradually edged up.
The algorithm would suggest that I would very much like Elvis Costello. But i don't, not very much. I don't need multiple albums on this list to prove that to myself. Some of the tracks are ok, I even like some of this album, just not the whole album... not very much anyway
Not even the best slipknot album
Honestly no more enjoyable than an open mic night at my local
Ok well that was much more enjoyable than expected
Seriously did Elvis Costello put this list together himself?
Nice background tunes
Itβs an oft mentioned classic in Aussie music circles, itβs not really my thing but I appreciate the skill required. Good to have some Australian representation on the list anyway
I didn't get much from this, a lot of similar sounding stuff in the list
I appreciated it more after reading about their motivations, I'd still never want to listen again though
I have this CD in my collection and I'm trying to figure out how it got there...
I had always heard such great things I expected this would be the live album to top them all... then I fell asleep.
I'm all in for the ideology here - and the documentary - Who Killed the KLF? I think it is, fascinating
Years ago I would have said The Love Below hands down, but there's a lot of filler. I might even be a Speakerboxxx man these days.
dad blues rock, the worst kind
This list has been a proper intro to Deep Purple for me, and some of these tracks I really dig... but I can do without the 20 minute jams.
I can see the influence on a lot of my favourite bands, likely will never listen again though.
I wasn't expecting it to be so boring
It was ok, tbh i expected more
Awesome
Important? sure... enjoyable? for me, not so much.
Front heavy but still a classic.
It was kinda interesting actually
frank is frank, right?
I enjoyed that more than i thought
fan of this
Nah
kinda all just washes over me, I've never been a fan of that slice of UK music that sounds like Stone Roses cover bands. Accurate or not, that's what this makes me think of.
Surprisingly enjoyable
Meh
I have developed an appreciation for Bjork because of this list
For me, this was an amazing time to be alive experiencing music. I was never the biggest Nirvana fan but this album impressed me then and impresses me now. Would have loved to see what came next.
MIDI instruments have a lot to answer for
Itβs gets better
That was far worse than Iβd expected. Got nothing for me.
Some of these songs are still amazing all these years later, others insufferable in their fake sincerity
I really wanted to like this. I like the whole idea of Daft Punk and the music first identity last philosophy. But some of this was just plain boring. Rarely do I find myself needing a break while listening, but that happened on this record.
Ok. Samey.
Definitely country
Just kinda washes over you pleasantly...
Not bad background tunes
Different things were "good" in the 80s apparently
A sign of things to come?
Solid effort from Johnny.
Cool sometimes but not my thing
I was looking forward to this but it was a bit of a let down. Perry's voice grinds now in a way I don't recall it doing in the 90s. I'm getting old...
very standard pub rock
One hit surrounded by a bunch of keyboard demos. One of the best things from the vinyl era is that records like this are a maximum 42 minutes. I couldnβt handle the Spotify version with 33 tracks of thisβ¦
Average songs from a great artist
make it stop
Not horrible but not up there with the best Bee Gees. I've learned though this that I prefer artistic direction shifts to not be done with double albums. EPs, EPs are fine.
1001 country albums that sound like each other
Scarily enough, i was debating chatGPT about the merits of this record and it brought it up from a 1 to a 2... but still... it's like 1/4 cup of The 1975 in a barrel of water.
It was ok for country
Unbelievably i've never listened to this all the way through. I get why it was massive but by god, some of these sound choices - what were we thinking back then
Some really interesting stuff here, just a bit much by the end
painful
Please no more of this garbage
fine
I am dumber for having heard this
really not my thing
Seems standard Elvis. Too many albums on this list.
Someone got a wah pedal
I was listening to this aloud when the question came from the next room - βIs this the band who does βSteveβs Laca Chickenβ?
