Popular Reviews

Tapestry by Carole King

Never listened to this from start to finish before. I prefer these original versions to many of the more overly produced and polished versions. A couple of the songs are of a much lower standard but it would be churlish to give this anything lower than 5.

The Wildest! by Louis Prima

This is the good thing about this. Never in a million years would I have listened to a Louis Prima album! Good fun.

American Beauty by Grateful Dead
Jan 20 2021

Listened through three times. Was not particularly impressed first run through but it did grow on me.

Jan 22 2021

Wonderful. The musicianship from the band is incredible and what a voice. Nearly lost a point for the Stones cover which I'm not sure works but that'd be churlish. 5/5

Heaven Or Las Vegas by Cocteau Twins
Jan 25 2021

Very pleasant to listen while working. Dreamlike. Grown on me over the weekend. 4/5

Scott 4 by Scott Walker
Jan 26 2021

Really interesting mix of song styles with some quite weird stuff going on. Can see the influence on Richard Hawley, Jack White, Alex Turner and others. 2nd half much better than the first. Old Man and Get Behind Me are brilliant.

Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth
Jan 27 2021

Not massively taken by this but liked the energy and interesting song structures.

Ananda Shankar by Ananda Shankar
Jan 28 2021

Nah, not for me. The later more traditional tracks were OK but the covers were awful.

Paranoid by Black Sabbath
Jan 29 2021

Enjoyed the music but not so much the singing or lyrics. Quite good fun all in all but not for me.

The Wildest! by Louis Prima
Feb 02 2021

This is the good thing about this. Never in a million years would I have listened to a Louis Prima album! Good fun.

Murmur by R.E.M.
Feb 03 2021

Not bad. Bit samey but like the low-fi mood. Clearly signs of the good things they did to come.

The Sun Rises In The East by Jeru The Damaja
Feb 04 2021

Thought the fist half was shit but then the second half was the shit.

Hounds Of Love by Kate Bush
Feb 05 2021

Absolute bona fide classic. Easy 5*

The Stooges by The Stooges
Feb 08 2021

More depth to the music than I expected. Production is excellent meaning it sounds simultaneously raw and warm.

At Folsom Prison by Johnny Cash
Feb 11 2021

Prefer live Cash stuff to the studio albums. The interaction with the crowd/prisoners brings it to life.

Debut by Björk
Feb 12 2021

Years since I listened to this (on tape probably). Stands up very well all in all and was good to listen to the less known songs again.

Hard Again by Muddy Waters
Feb 15 2021

Hadn't realised this was recorded late in his career (and life). You can hear in the recording how relaxed and fun the sessions were. Great stuff.

Repeater by Fugazi
Feb 18 2021

Nah, not for me.

OK Computer by Radiohead
Feb 22 2021

Absolute classic.

Paris 1919 by John Cale
Feb 23 2021

Kinda nice. Some really good songs but most just muddle along.

Nowhere by Ride
Feb 25 2021

Memories of my teenage college days. Some real classics on this but a couple don't sound so good this far removed from the shoegaze heyday.

Astral Weeks by Van Morrison
Feb 26 2021

Sounded better to my older ears. Not a huge fan of his voice though. Will give it a few more listens.

Fleet Foxes by Fleet Foxes
Mar 01 2021

Modern classic. Love it!

Hunky Dory by David Bowie
Mar 02 2021

Some of the greatest songs ever recorded but the whole piece is ultimately let down by a couple of awful ones. It's David Bowie though so you have to forgive the experiments don't you?

Dookie by Green Day
Mar 04 2021
Tapestry by Carole King
Mar 05 2021

Never listened to this from start to finish before. I prefer these original versions to many of the more overly produced and polished versions. A couple of the songs are of a much lower standard but it would be churlish to give this anything lower than 5.

Rid Of Me by PJ Harvey
Mar 08 2021

Very raw which works with the better songs but leaves some songs feeling too incomplete. Still a good record.

On The Beach by Neil Young
Mar 09 2021

Great album, up there competing to be his best for me.

Beggars Banquet by The Rolling Stones
Mar 10 2021

Very good, amazing in parts but not their best.

Technique by New Order
Mar 12 2021

One of the best albums from one of the best bands.

Parallel Lines by Blondie
Mar 15 2021

The very best songs are some of the best pop songs ever which makes some of the weaker songs stand out like a sore thumb.

Alien Lanes by Guided By Voices
Mar 17 2021

More miss than hit!

Brilliant Corners by Thelonious Monk
Mar 18 2021

Not my usual listen but I enjoyed it in the background.

Jagged Little Pill by Alanis Morissette
Mar 22 2021

Stands up to the test of time for me. Very good songwriting.

Germfree Adolescents by X-Ray Spex
Mar 23 2021

Good fun energetic punk album. Probably better in smaller doses but some excellent songs on there.

Is This It by The Strokes
Mar 26 2021

Some of the songs sound a bit weak with the passage of time but it's still a modern cultural classic. 4

Stand! by Sly & The Family Stone
Mar 29 2021

Excellent. Brilliant pop songs and fantastic long, deeper funk tracks.

Car Wheels On A Gravel Road by Lucinda Williams
Apr 01 2021

Not the sort of thing I'd normally listen to but really enjoyed this. Will listen again.

Born To Run by Bruce Springsteen
Apr 06 2021

Oh they're rated!

Here, My Dear by Marvin Gaye
Apr 07 2021

Not one I've heard before and I enjoyed it. Not a patch on What's Going On but then, what is?

Ramones by Ramones
Apr 08 2021

Obviously a revolutionary band and album but it sounds a bit samey

Marcus Garvey by Burning Spear
Apr 09 2021

Really like the vibe. Will listen again and investigate more!

Rumours by Fleetwood Mac
Apr 12 2021

Everyone loves Rumours, don't they?

Ingenue by k.d. lang
Apr 14 2021

Better than I expected. Quite nice.

Faith by George Michael
Apr 21 2021

Better than I expected tbf.

Trafalgar by Bee Gees
Apr 22 2021

Some really good parts but some (the last few) absolute stinkers

Dare! by The Human League
Apr 23 2021
Phrenology by The Roots
Apr 29 2021

Enjoying this a great deal. 7/10 (4*)

Darkness on the Edge of Town by Bruce Springsteen
May 04 2021

Brilliant. Not a huge Springsteen fan but this (and Nebraska) are wonderful.

British Steel by Judas Priest
May 06 2021

Just not my cup of tea at all.

The Cars by The Cars
May 07 2021

Hit and miss. Some of the quirkier ones hit the mark but most is mor bollocks.
