1001 Albums Summary

Don't Panic - Pleasant melody; nice, simple opener to album. Shiver - Heartfelt singing, call and response between singing and guitar; bittersweet, unhealthy relationship. Spies - Shares similarities to Stereophonics, unsure what song is about, perhaps slightly too long. Sparks - Bass mixed more heavily here, singing more baritone for the most part, likely alluding to beginning of relationships. Yellow - Potentially Coldplay's greatest song, everything heavier on third beat, beautiful lead and backing vocals in chorus, song about lengths narrator has gone for love. Trouble - More reflective, piano plays a larger role, quite sad when contrasted with 'Yellow', narrator feels trapped with motif of 'web' alluding to this. Parachutes - Titular track, stripped back, essentially an interlude. High Speed - delicate lead guitar, bass only noticeable in bridge and chorus, motif of bubble returns (connoting ideas of fragility, perhaps relationship is about to end), high speed implies recklessness. We Never Change - Narrator talking about future hopes and aspirations, quite melancholic; despite hopes, narrator knows they are stuck, images of flying further referring to entrapment and useless hopes of escape, groundhog day-esque, acoustic.

Blister in the Sun - Strong drumming, fast tempo; agitated, breathy opener to album. Kiss Off - Beatles-esque backing vocals, loose bass line, good build up to climax. Please Do Not Go - chorus shares similarities with 'Tide is High', more minimalist and slower song, mixing slightly muddy in right channel. Add It Up - not the greatest vocals on their own, work better alongside instruments, faster tempo, potentially inspired by americana/surf rock, vocals have droning quality, another strong bassline. Confessions - Melody sounds 10 years ahead of its time, sadder, downbeat, feels ominous in a similar way to 'I Want You (She's So Heavy)', good use of panning. Prove My Love - Excellent bass playing again, drumming mixed into background but can still be felt, guitar mixed into foreground, catchy chorus. Promise - singer adds pauses and hesitations to lyrics, adds to feel of song; guitar and bass seem to playing together more here, best drumming of the album here. To The Kill - Much deeper bass line, could imagine this as a Velvet Underground song, guitar and bass feel like they're fighting eachother for attention. Gone Daddy Gone - Xylophone was surprising, guitar and bass seem to be following same rhythm, with xylophone playing lead, better vocal performance. Good Feeling - Feels more reflective, sombre, reminiscent of 'Sunday Morning', only use of piano on album, string arrangement supports feelings, more restrained vocals, slow fade out allows for reflection.

Interesting concept, but not for me. Slightly too long.

Interesting introduction to Zappa. Really enjoyed the opening track.

Incredible. Understandably considered one of the greatest albums of all time. The bass line to sir duke is still stuck in my head.

Good album. Pales in comparison to the Beatle's later works.

Not a fan of Presley. He's a talented performer, but none of these songs are his own.
