I can see how in 1977 this album was very experimental and challenged some musical concepts from the time. Overall I think it's a good album, with 3 songs that were the focus for me: The break in the Aja track with that guitar solo is espetacular! Beacon blues has solid saxophone phrasings. Peg has great bass lines and solid drums.
The musicians are great, but the bantering and audience threw me off. It's a good jazz record, but I can't see anything really impressive over other works.
It's called a classic for a reason. Not much else to say.
Didn't knew about Nick Drake until now. What a pleasant surprise it was! "One of theses things first" had my attention. "Bryter Layter" was a great surprise with the flute. I'm definitely going to go deeper into the other albums.
I think it's a standard record. The "Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before" track grabbed my attention for the groove. Kind of an ironic title, if I consider my first comment about this album. I think "Unhappy Birthday" was cleaver. The happy sounding melody with the sad/dark lyrics. This track I actually listed to it a few times.
I don't know why, but on this album I wasn't bothered with hearing the audience. Really liked the concept of the instrumental bridge being their own track. Never seen that before. Night Train was probably my favorite track, beside the instrumental bridge's.
Not really my jam, but sings very well.
Didn't know about Hookworms before this. A lot of synths used around. I liked it. If you don't consider the lyrics, the tracks seem to merge together.
Depeche Mode is always a joy!
