Brilliantly captures the mood of life in mid 90s Britain - positive and hopeful about life in spite of its hardships.
โI remember Nirvana had a tune called โI Hate Myself and Want to Dieโ, and I was like โฆ โWell, Iโm not fucking having that.โ โฆ We had fuck-all, and I still thought that getting up in the morning was the greatest fuckinโ thing ever...Everythingโs gonna be fine. Stay optimistic. If thereโs dark clouds coming, theyโll leave again. They always do. The world is round... No matter how big a pile of shite youโve gotten yourself into... you will get over it. It will go away just like the weather.โ
~Noel Gallagher
Favourite lyrics:
LIVE FOREVER:
"Maybe I just wanna fly
Wanna live, I don't wanna die
Maybe I just wanna breathe
Maybe I just don't believe
Maybe you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever."
SUPERSONIC:
"I need to be myself
I can't be no one else
I'm feeling supersonic, give me gin and tonic
You can have it all, but how much do you want it?
You make me laugh
Give me your autograph
Can I ride with you in your BMW?
You can sail with me in my yellow submarine"
" ...I know a girl called Elsa, she's into Alka-Seltzer
She sniffs it through a cane on a supersonic train
And she makes me laugh
I got her autograph
She done it with a doctor on a helicopter
She's sniffin' in a tissue, sellin' the Big Issue"
Also a big fan of Liam's pronunciation/intonation on C&A - especially of "Sunsheeeeiiinnne"

Big fan of the hindewhu technique (had to look this up) on Watermelon Man - achieved in this case by Bill Summers blowing into a beer bottle - but the baseline on Chameleon is the star of the show.

Can't say my interest in VM has ever extended beyond Brown Eyed Girl but there were a few songs on here I did enjoy. Found it a bit shouty and repetitive after a while, and have a strong dislike of the title track, but really enjoyed Crazy Love - perhaps because it's the least shouty?
And I know all British artists were trying to sound American during this era so I don't know if it's because he leans into it too much or something, but for me his sound comes across as inauthentic and derivative.

Was really pleasantly surprised by this. I mainly just knew Dennis as Charles Manson's best mate (and tbh I think that will still be the case) but he was clearly quite the musician too.

The year was 1990: Nelson Mandela was freed from prison, Margaret Thatcher resigned as PM, Goodfellas was gracing the big screen, Twin Peaks the small screen, and Italia 90 was bringing feel good vibes to the nation.
And on top of all of this, the golden age of hip hop was about to become even golder with The Tribe's emergence onto the scene with this instant classic of a debut album. The 90s were off to a good start.
Now, I'm not old enough to remember any of this stuff happening at the time but still, what a time to be alive!

This is one of those albums that I respect more than I enjoy. The fact that it was the first album to be entirely made up of samples is an impressive feat and you can hear the influence it's had on all different kinds of music to this day.
Unfortunately, one of those kinds is low-fi which I'm not so grateful to it for, and has actually tarnished it for me since I last heard it.
Still, can't deny it's importance and it's one of the few purely instrumental records that I would choose to listen to - more for the hip-hop and cinematic vibes than the electronic ones.

Saying I'd prefer this album without the concept part probably takes away what is supposed to be so groundbreaking about it, and means I didn't "get" it - but, it would be so much better without all the amateur dramatics like the irritating voice acting and sound effects that, for me, only serve to detract from some genuinely great songs and Gilmour's incredible guitar work.

Listening to this superb album on a cloudy London afternoon has me Americana dreamin' - not of the America of today though sadly...
The Weight is one of the greatest songs ever...like, top 10 great. The fact that RR was influenced by Buรฑuel in the writing of it only adds to it's allure...
"Buรฑuel did so many films on the impossibility of sainthood. People trying to be good in โViridianaโ and โNazarinโ, people trying to do their thing. In โThe Weightโ itโs the same thing. People like Buรฑuel would make films that had these religious connotations to them but it wasnโt necessarily a religious meaning. In Buรฑuel there were these people trying to be good and itโs impossible to be good. In โThe Weightโ it was this very simple thing. Someone says, โListen, would you do me this favour? When you get there will you say โhelloโ to somebody or will you give somebody this or will you pick up one of these for me? Oh? Youโre going to Nazareth, thatโs where the Martin guitar factory is. Do me a favour when youโre there.โ This is what itโs all about. So the guy goes and one thing leads to another and itโs like โHoly Shit, whatโs this turned into? Iโve only come here to say โhelloโ for somebody and Iโve got myself in this incredible predicament.โ It was very Buรฑuelish to me at the time.

This is Bruce at a time where he was struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts...and you don't need to be a doctor to recognise that when you listen to this album.
These songs are all beautifully writen, bleak stories about the struggles of life.
Don't know about you, but sometimes I just want to wallow...and for me, there's no better companion in those times than The Boss, armed with just his guitar, his harmonica and his sad weary voice.

Well, I'm tired of coming out on the losing end
So, honey, last night I met this guy

Well, I guess everything dies, baby, that's a fact
But maybe everything that dies someday comes back

It blocked all my senses

This is the Killers before they turned all Springsteeny, when their main influences mostly consisted of UK bands from the 80s.
There's nothing sad bastardy about this music though. I guess growing up under the eternal sunshine and neon lights of Las Vegas as opposed to the rain soaked streets of some grim northern town in England will do that.
This is British melancholy fused with American optimism and showmanship. More cathartic and epic than reflective and understated. More Caesars Palace than Ladbrokes. More The Office US than The Office UK.
But like this last example, it still works. It shouldn't, but it really does.

Live albums rarely do justice to the energy of a live show . This is most definitely not the case here.
The cultural significance of this record, coming when it did in 1963, can't be overestimated, nor fully grasped by a modern audience. But listening to it in 2025, it's more than understandable why this man was known as the godfather of both soul and funk, and one of the greatest ever live performers.

Ah, a voice that makes me miss the days of the ยฃ2.50 pint in the pre-smoking-ban pubs I used to haunt around the times when Amy was in her pomp.
Despite not being a smoker myself, I must have second hand smoked a pack of Marlboro Reds a day and walked around permanently smelling like a human ash tray marinated in stale beer. But those pubs changed for the worse when that ban kicked in.
The beer might taste cleaner now, and I might live an extra ten years, but the atmosphere, the characters, and the conversation, are all now relics, resting in peace alongside the woman, who with that soulful, nicotine stained voice, and offbeat, 100% real, personality of hers, was the perfect embodiment of those seedy, yet sacred, places.

Hate and war, they're just as bad as wops
Hate and war, I hate all the politeness
Hate and war, I hate all the cops
Hate and war, I want to walk down any street
Hate and war, looking like a creep
Hate and war, I don't care if I get beat up
Hate and war, by any rotten Greek

GIRL LOVES ME*
"Cheena so sound, so titty up this Malchick, say
Party up moodge, nanti vellocet round on Tuesday
Real bad dizzy snatch, making all the omies mad, Thursday
Popo blind to the polly in the hole by Friday
Where the fuck did Monday go?"
"You viddy at the cheena
Choodesny with the red rot
Libbilubbing litso-fitso
Devotchka watch her garbles
Spatchko at the rozz-shop
Split a ded from his deng, deng
Viddy, viddy at the cheena"
*The lyrics to this song are a mix of:
โข Nadsat (a fictional register or argot used by the teenage gang members in Anthony Burgess' dystopian novel A Clockwork Orange. Burgess was a linguist and he used this background to depict his characters as speaking a form of Russian-influenced English)
&
โข Polari -(a secret slang language with a history as a coded form of communication primarily used by gay men in the UK when homosexuality was illegal. It draws from a mix of sources, including Italian, Romany, Yiddish, and Cockney rhyming slang, and was used for secrecy, social bonding, and as a form of humor)

The first truly unlistenable album on this list so far. I'm well aware of Moby's music but in the sake of this challenge I thought I'd try to brave it. Got half way through the first song on the album and I'd had enough. Sorry, but no.

My one criticism of this double album would be that I think Outkast are better when they're working collaboratively than apart like this. It's the juxtaposition of their 2 very different styles on the same record that makes them such a special and unique band.
Still, 2 excellent albums that bring back some great memories. Back then I much preferred The Love Below, but listening to them back now, Speakerboxx is a lot better than I remembered.
Favourite lyrics:
HEY YA!
If what they say is
"Nothing is forever"
Then what makes, then what makes
Then what makes, then what makes (what makes, what makes)
Love the exception?
So why, oh, why, oh
Why, oh, why, oh, why, oh
Are we so in denial when we know we're not happy here?
ROSES
Caroline, (Caroline), see
She's the reason for the word 'bitch' (bitch)
I hope she's speedin' on the way to the club
Tryna hurry up to get to a baller or singer or somebody like that
And try to put on her make up in the mirror and crash, crash
Crash into a ditch (Just playin')
(Bitch) Crazy bitch
(Stupid-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(Old punk-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(Old dumb-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(A bitch's bitch) Crazy bitch
(Just a bitch) Crazy bitch
(Stupid-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(Old punk-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(Old dumb-ass bitch) Crazy bitch
(A bitch's bitch) Crazy bitch
(Just a bitch)

"I think the Clifton Suspension Bridge was built for people like you. The fact you can drive cars across it is a bonus, so do the decent thing...and leave the keys in your car so someone can shift it after...and please don't call in complaining I'm encouraging people to kill themselves (again).
I'm suggesting that one person throws themself off Clifton Suspension bridge because he is, and hopefully soon to be was, a very unpleasant individual...a bit like Jamiroquai!"
