I always like songs about history, especially if it is about the ugly sides of history. This album has so many different stories of wars and you can feel the bitterness and sadness in the songs. Problem is, I simply do not love the songs song-wise. I love the concept, I like the lyrics but I always like songs like these to have more feistiness, some anger, some fight in them. I would listen to this while in bed staring at the ceiling but would rarely play the entire album in any other scenario. Some of the songs I also just simply did not like (looking at you 'England').
Very nice and easy to listen to, just an album you can play while doing other stuff. Love the vibe and also a fan of hip-hop so yknow, right up my alley :). It is rather lengthy, which would be fine if the songs would be very recognizably different but they aren't. I would still occasionally put this album on loop tho.
little funky, but nothing else really to it. Can't fully appreciate his voice either to be honest. It's ok, but would never listen to this myself.
This one is so hard to rate. It has some absolute bangers, which for me are for sure the opening track "Cecilia Ann" and the tracks "Velouria", "Allison" and "Is She Weird". The problem is a lot of the rest of the album has songs that I do not really love. The songs I mention make me want to give it a 5 but since those together are not even close to half of the album I am going to leave it at a 4
Yes it is nice to listen to, probably especially when high. Specific parts of specific songs are very good and take you on a trip but I can't rate it any higher because the majority of the album is just "good" imo.
good shit. Not a single song I would say I dislike and 3 (maybe 4) songs out of 8 I would say are very good. Longer instrumentals are usually not my thing but my god this album slaps. 4 songs I would rate a 5 and the others are a 4 or 4.5. It's either a very high 4 or my first 5 and I'm choosing the latter
I feel like I got too many people around me that hate this guy for me not to be influenced by them. I don't really like any songs apart from crippled inside though. But it fits into the category 'don't mind it if someone puts this on' so I will give it a 3.
I mean, it's nice on the ears? Mundane lyrics (especially because 90% of them get repeated 3 times) and doesn't do anything special in regards to instrumental either. I don't love folk or country (which this is kind of a blend of, but mostly folk I guess), but I don't really hate either of them either. But this simply gets very boring after a while with the repeating lyrics, folk will have to have good lyrics or producing/instrumentals to appeal. This has neither in my opinion, but she does have the calming voice down pat. ( I did like the first and last songs of the album somewhat, but that isn't enough to redeem the album for me )
Don't love folk music and this is the second album in a row in this genre. I like his voice, it's very soothing. Just like with other folk music, it can be saved by lyrics for me and the lyrics in this album are pretty ok. I would likely never listen to this album myself still, this kind of folk music is just not my thing, too monotone.
The meaning and history of this album alone are incredible.
Jazz is the kind of music which give me thoughts of 'I should maybe listen to this in my free time in the background more often' when I hear in a cafe or bar, but never do. I kind of had the same feeling with this album.
Now, I do agree with some reviews saying that the songs are a little too long and you can probably shave off the first and last couple of minutes from the songs. Yes, it is very nice to listen to, but at some point it just gets repetitive and gets drowned out in my head, so to speak. The parts with lyrics I liked (I might have a bias to political music, and this hits hard).
Would not hate listening to this more often but would rarely select this album to play when I need to decide what to listen to. Normally I would hesitate giving this a 3 and maybe give it a 2 but the meaning behind it makes me give it a solid 3.
To preface: First album of Johnny Cash I ever heard.
When it comes to music I like a little bit of upbeat or swingy music way more than sad songs or ballads. However, if I am a stickler for something music-related it is when stories are woven into the music in a great lyrical way. The stories of the songs are beautiful and Cash his voice brings them over in a such a great way. Now, of course I cannot give this album the full lyrical and story-based credit because these are almost all covers.
But bringing it in a way like Cash does I will still give it a 4/5. I love this voice and the way it carries the emotion of the lyrics.
Let me preface this by saying that not a single one of the songs on this album I actively dislike. I think the majority of this album is a 3/5 for me with some of it's songs being a 4/5. Her voice is incredible of course, no argument there, but the music is simply not fully my cup of tea unfortunately.
I did like the 2 parts this album had and honestly found myself enjoying the second part of the album more than the first. Waking the witch and Jig of Life both have made their way into my playlist.
I don't think I would think to myself in the future 'hey let's put on this album in it's entirety', but I will vibe along with most songs when they are being played (and trust me, I have a certain someone in my life that WILL make me listen to this A LOT throughout my life).
This album feels incredibly hard to rate because of it being a double record and the first half being just so much better than the second in my opinion. Side Note: I fucking love the piano
When the first 5/6 songs were done playing I thought to myself this might get a pretty high rating if it keeps up. It didn't.
My god there's a lot of songs I consider to be filler, just songs that kill all momentum when listening to the album. The final songs made me want to skip through them instead of listening to them. If the album was only the first record/first 7 songs then it could've been a very high 4
Unfortunately I am rating an album and not only the best songs of said album. The length of the album, and the amount of songs that drag the album needlessly to said length, made me go all the way down to a 3 sadly. (would give a 3.5 if possible)
Holy shit some of these songs are abysmal to listen to. C.T.A. - 102 and Mind Gardens are torture to my ears.
Not a single song here I truly am a huge fan of, all of my ratings of the songs are below a 4. The highest songs being a 3.75 (7.5/10) with My Back Pages.
The voices are nice to listen to and I like the melody and instrumentals until they go absolutely apeshit. Half of the album is a 3 and half the album is a 1.
The Bee Gees might, in fact, need disco.
This is, so far, the most boring and plain album I've listened to. My God man, the lyrics, instrumental and voice are all so zzzzzzzzzzz. It's giving absolutely nothing, and even worse, became annoying to listen to at times.
Also no disco Bee Gees album on this list wtf.
The opening track is an anxiety attack in a bottle.
Afterwards we have the second track which is my favorite of the album and one I actually really like.
After that we have a bunch of songs, some I somewhat like, some I somewhat dislike.
This one is hard to rate, I would give it a 2.5 but I can't unfortunately.
I would probably never think to play this album in it's entirety again and if it is being played I would probably switch it to something else after the first half of the album is done playing, so I'm giving it a 2.
Just like with the previous Elton John album: Sounds nice but that's about it. Lyrically not crazy, but very nice to listen to nonetheless. You wouldn't catch me saying 'oh let's listen to an Elton John album' very often unfortunately, but I don't mind it playing in the background.
Atmospherically a masterpiece. Some songs just put you in a trance where you can close your eyes and bop your head. Some songs I found rather boring but that's the minority, and even those I would not necessarily mind listening to.
hard one to rate, but I will go with 4 instead of 3. Very nice to listen to both the big band and more calm part of the album. Love Ray Charles's voice, as always.
I mean it's ok, it simply didn't do anything at all to pull me in.
Not a big fan of r&b. The autotune is kind of annoying sometimes and the third song is terrible imo. Not great lyrically and definitely not vocally unfortunately
Yes I know its Kanye.
Some of the lyrics were so dumb they were funny but I vibed with the music, as I usually do with hip-hop. Good listen, saved a decent amount of songs to my playlist so a solid 4.
Some very nice tunes, but nothing completely crazy. Nice to listen to in the background but not a ton of songs I consider very strong playlist-material.
Mostly boring though calming and tranquille enough for me to give it a 2. Barely.
Nice to vibe to but nothing really more than that. Doesn't pull me in really but wouldn't really mind listening to it more often.
So chill to listen to (despite some of the lyric of course), I just want to lie in a hammock with a cocktail in my hand listening to the waves of the ocean while listening to this pondering about life.
I am just a white guy from Western Europe so what do I know but I can not appreciate this album unfortunately. The conga drums are fine until they use it for 40 minutes straight. Terrible vocals that border on screaming (though this does make it more authentic-feeling so that's good I guess) combined with nothing really interesting going on whatsoever makes me not be able to really give it any points.
Good tunes. Feels a little dated and repetitive at times maybe but still fine.
Sounds nice, soothing but strong. Not crazy about any song but as an album it's simply a nice listen.
It's ok? Sounds are nice, but nothing all too special imo. Wouldn't truly mind listening to this but really has to fit the mood I am in I guess. A high 2 or a low 3 but since there's no song I really actually care about that much I guess a 2 is fitting
I cannot stand the way this guy sings at all. Occasionally I might stumble on a part I like only for it to be broken by either the vocals or random noisy bullsh*t nuh-uh.
some very good parts, some very meh parts. Generally good for background-music.
