So... I don't love this album (band). I can see having it on in the background and not getting stabby about it. Not a fan of the lyrics. I don't know how I feel about the singing.. I don't love it but there is something about his voice that reminds me of Gord Downei. They music ok but kind of forgettable as the bass, rhythm and bass kind of don't ever do anything that take centre stage. Especially the lead guitar. Reminds of The Edge how it just kind of lingers around the song and never takes the spotlight. If anything, I like the bass lol
So I love Paul Simon, even though I find his writing a bit pretentious. For 1986, I think it's kind of brave to try an African themed album mixed with folk/pop. I think Graceland is a masterpiece of writing in my opinion and carries the entire album. I do find the rest of the album overrated and somewhat annoying. Again, another album with incredible musicianship. Especially the bass. I dig the African vibe though in small doses.
I really wanted to like this album because it is so different. It's not that I don't like it but it's not blowing my mind. It feels way more like a movie score than a folk rock album. Nothing on it really stood out but I enjoyed the experience.
I know for a fact that I am the biggest Dylan head in this group so it might be shocking when I say that this is not one of my favorite Dylan albums. For me, this album consists of some of his greatest and least memorable songs. Still pretty fucking great though. The music also tends to get a little repetitive at times. In my opinion, Visions of Johanna has some of the greatest lyrics of all time. “The ghost of electricity howls in the bones of her face”. Come on….
One thing I love about these albums is the imperfections. The feeling like, yup, let’s just do one take boys. Good enough lol. It adds a real charm to these albums that todays musical world is lacking.
when listening to this, I could almost see myself at a rave or all zonked out at like 4am somewhere downtown. I can't say that I enjoyed any of it but I guess it's interesting for it's time and place?
Great album. I love Paul Simon's poetry and guitar playing. The harmonies are, of course, legendary. I really dig the 60's folk rock feel of some tunes like Hazy Shade of Winter and Mrs. Robinson. Paul Simon's guitar playing is actually a pretty interesting mix of folk, classical, and jazz and worth noting how unique that is. It kind of gets overshadowed by the vocals and lyrics but very cool.
I like his voice and I some of the tunes are ok. Not my cup of tea. Not terrible though
I love this album. The music and vocals are out of this world and the grooves are epic. R&B at it's best. Love it
This is one of the greatest albums I have ever heard. Raw, unpolished, gritty, rock and roll. Simple and excellent! One of my new faves!
this is one of the most annoying and boring albums I have ever heard and every part of it grates on me..... hard pass
I don’t know much about alt rock or the grunge scene but as I listened to this album, it was clear that this band had a huge influence on bands like Nirvana and Alice in Chains. This is not an album I would put on while I cook dinner or while I’m kicking back on the deck. It’s weird and kind of disturbing but I find many of grunges best bands are. It’s not my cup of tea but I gotta say, this is a great album. I love the off pitch vocals, pedal effects, and unique yet awesome guitar work. It weaves well over the basic pop/rock chord progressions. I will never listen to this again but I will give credit where credit is due. I can see how many would give this album a 4 but it’s just not my cup of tea so it gets a strong 3.
There is no denying that this album is epic. I was more into the Souls of Mischief in 93 because I never really dug the Wu's violent lyrics. They were just a little over the top for my taste. This album does have some of the most icon bars ever recorded and the beats are unique and oddly catchy. It's cool to hear so many different styles of MCing on one record but if you ask me, Method Man is the king. Killer album.
Sigh.... Just because something is interesting, doesn't make it good. I really like Fiona Apple and her wordsmithing but I don't care for this album. Great musicianship at times but for what? Disjointed and irritating. Like a bad Tom Waits album... what's he doing over there? Complaining and being annoying. If this album spent more time finding a groove instead of trying to be different, you'd have a beauty.
Some fun guitar stuff but pretty much annoying
Pretty relatable as far as breakup albums go. Some great piano work and vocals. I really like "Take It All". Pretty powerful tune. For the most part, I found the arrangements kind of repetitive and predictable.
Oh man… incredible debut album for a hip hop group. The unsung hero here is the legendary DJ Muggs who created the signature sound for groups like Cypress, House of Pain, Funkdoobiest and Soul Assassins. The beats and samples on this record are a good time and B Real is one of the best. Not the best Cypress record but a classic.
I do love some of this album and I feel like it would be worth while to listen to is many times over to get a feel for the lyrics as they are the most interesting part of it all. I do love the trippy trance like vibe to Lady Godiva. Very cool for it's time.
I am not sure why this is on the list. It's a great hip hop album. I dig the wisdom and rhymes are great. Beats are decent. I would say nothing really stands out to me
If you like instrumental jazz, you'll love this. I have tried over and over to get into it but I just don't dig it. I prefer vocal jazz. I really like Moon Dream a lot. The rest of the songs I just didn't jive with. BUT, you can def appreciate the talent. If you like that kind of thing.
Compositions are great for the genre. Vocals and harmonies and musicianship are top notch. Karen Carpenter is actually a pretty great drummer. All that being said, this 70s cheese is just a little too much for me. So bad...
This felt more like a movie score than a rock album. The strange thing is, I never skipped one song. I enjoyed the whole thing from start to finish. The odd soundscapes and cool riffs. One thing I have noticed in Bowies recordings is the funky bass. It's never tucked away. Instead, it's front and centre and funky as hell. Not what I expected but I dig it!
Raw, gritty, dirty, primitive, visceral, raucous, rock. I love this album.
music is great but it's just too silly. Not my bag.
I am not a fan of Perry Farrell's vocals. Though this record has some cool musicality at times, for the most part I find it uneventful and kind of blah.
I liked the bass grooves on this album and the songs were kind of a fun adventure. cool to hear it once. would not listen again.
I like Oasis. Decent album
For me, this album has aged extremely well. A band that can be both interesting, technical and groovy all at the same time. Something that really stands out for me on these songs are the dynamics. Songs that go from lone keyboard to full band and back again. Almost gives it that rock opera feel but staying more in it's lane. When the band comes in on School, I get chills. Best played loud. Great album.
Some of this was very cool and some was not so much. "Julie With" is a great track! Got some good stuff here but didn't blow my mind
It's hard to give a good review to a band you don't really like. I really don't care for Alice In Chains but as a teenager, was surrounded by those who loved them. I never got it. Today I can say that I get it but it's still not for me. I am giving it a 3 because I recognize it's good. It's just someone else's good.
Amazing album. The unsung heroes here are bass player Tommy Cogbill and drummer Roger Hawkins. Just layin down an absolute master class in groovy soul rhythm section. Erica Clapton also makes an appearance on Good to Me as I Am to You. Plus Aretha is the GOAT.
Absolutely brilliant. Distinct vocals, ground breaking lead guitar work, incredible players, and fantastic songs. Best of the best
never dug and still don't dig. so I feel bad for giving it a bad score because I know it's pretty good. just not for me
