Fun album but certainly not for me. Enjoyed his voice and how the album opened and closed. Wouldn’t revisit but happy for anyone who enjoys this.
Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst is sublime. That last 4 tracks really pull it all together for me even if the album as a whole is not my cup of tea. Knowing very little about Kendrick going in, this piqued my interest, I’m intrigued.
Asylum great. Definitely heard a couple of these before, not much hit.
Really beautiful album. Could have done without the Meat Is Murder closing track, just felt odd. I’ve heard The Smiths before but didn’t realize how much I enjoyed Morrissey’s voice until I listened to a full project.
It’s a nice enough collection of songs, even if it’s hard to believe Coconut is a real song. His version of Without You is pretty good but ultimately I don’t think I’m in my 40s enough to fully enjoy this.
Just an incredible listening experience. Obviously the title track is familiar to millions but I enjoyed so much of this as a whole. Felt like a cohesive piece of art even with an array of genres covered. ‘Wrong ‘Em Boyo’ was my standout but would revisit this again and again but would it kill Joe Strummer to enunciate a little bit?
Familiar with a few of these and enjoyed those but the new stuff to me was a bit too screamy for me. Don’t really get what makes it special. This is not for me and that’s okay.
Absolutely beautiful. Had never heard of this artist and did a deep drive into his sad, short life but how incredible to have left behind this art. His voice takes you places and the album as a whole feels ahead of its time, it doesn’t feel like it was recorded in the 70s. The accompaniments really pull it all together. At The Chime of a City Clock is so dreamy.

Unfortunately because of the language barrier none of it really resonated but the vibes were good. I can imagine having this on in the background on a breezy summer night. It’s pleasant to listen to even if I found the fade outs between tracks a little odd.
This album is like stepping back in time, it’s so resolutely 90s. Not sure where its legacy sits this far out. The singles alone invoke memories in you but it does feel a little dated. ‘When I Come Around’ is an essential 90s playlist addition but I’ve always gravitated more to their later stuff.
I don’t find his voice particularly captivating and I’m sure that’s controversial. I liked bits of the second half, listened on vinyl. ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ and the closing track ‘It’s All Over Now, Baby Blue’ were nice.
Really enjoyed the mostly instrumental second half but not really sure how it all fits together. ‘Heroes’ the title track is incredible, it’s well-known. ‘Moss Garden’ was my highlight.
Been listening to a song that samples ‘The Humpty Dance’ for almost 30 years and finally listened to the full original. The whole album was a fun ride. Felt like I was in a 90s Hip Hop video. Some lyrics that caught me off guard but it was a vibe. Part comedy, part musical. Really enjoyed it.
Really incredible. In my head all these years, Arcade Fire was a hardcore rock band in the vein of Alexisonfire. I just didn’t expect this to be so light and listenable. I was hooked from the first two tracks. I’m disappointed that I never thought to explore this band at all previously. The album feels cinematic and I felt like I was riding in a car through the Suburbs, listening to a love letter to a life left behind.
Not sure I have the taste level required to appreciate something like this. Felt like I was in the lobby bar of a very swish hotel from decades ago. Not entirely sure how it sets itself above anything else in this same genre. It wasn’t bad but it didn’t feel spectacular in any way. This may require a little more deep diving.
Kind of dumb and not very interesting. Felt like one continuous track aside from ‘There Goes Norman’ which was a fun little detour. Whereas listening to The B-52s and understanding the kitsch of it all, this didn’t feel like it had a personality. This is maybe the first album I’ve struggled with understanding its place in the list.
Perfectly fine. Feels very much like it should soundtrack a WB or CW show. Highlight for me was ‘La Cienega Just Smiled’ and ‘When The Stars Go Blue’ which I recognized from an American Idol cover in 2007. Near the end of the album I could solidly understand how this man has put out 30 albums across not that many years. A case of quantity over quality.
Well….listen, I’ve never really gotten The Beatles. I understand their legacy, I know about the hysteria, it all makes sense but this album, for all I’ve heard about it over the years, kind of disappointing. For what was meant to be some sort of concept album, I felt like it fell apart after the first half. Some real standouts with ‘A Day In The Life’, ‘With A Little Help From My Friends’ and naturally ‘Lucy…’
This was a tough one for me. I love his voice, I liked a handful of it but a couldn’t fully get into it. Some of the lyrics gave me the ick but I’ve always struggled to not be totally creeped out by Prince. The back half was definitely more enjoyable, ‘I Could Never Take The Place of Your Man’ was the standout for me.
Really melancholy but beautiful. The type of country music I could envision listening to on a fishing trip. Really enjoyed ‘Brass Buttons’ and I was familiar with ‘Love Hurts’ but not with Gram Parsons. After reading his bio and the story behind his last few years, this felt like a pretty solid work of art.
What a ride. I started the listen thinking “oh her voice is not for me” and then wondered “what’s she so upset about, she’s only 19?” And then it sort of clicked just after ‘Criminal’. If she felt mad, I said yes she’s right to feel that, and I’m mad too. If she felt scorned and misunderstood, I thought “that’s right, let them know!” A truly strange listening experience, fighthing what I thought I knew about her as an artist and clearly knowing nothing. This was about the young adult experience where as huge as the feelings feel in the moment, they’re real and they’re valid and have weight. I can’t wait to return to this for another spin.
Nice enough. The language barrier is always going murky the waters of a review. It was a thrill to hear the original versions of Bongo Bong and Je Ne T’aime Plus after only knowing the Robbie Williams covers from 2006. I preferred the French language songs near the end particularly ‘La Vie A 2’
Obviously familiar with the hits. It felt very much like a cohesive body of work and crazy to think it was that early in her career. I find the voice a little grating at times but you can’t really deny how much fun she’s having and how at the core of it all, the music is good and relatable.
Deeply not for me. Unfamiliar with the studio versions so hard to appreciate live. Comes across like a bit of a loser during the banter bits. Not sure why it’s special.
Mostly unremarkable unfortunately
Really really enjoyed this one. Can’t say it’ll be something I revisit a lot but I loved a good chunk of it. The Islamic influences, paying homage to everyone who helped put it together, it was just really fun and felt like real storytelling.
Yeh it’s fine and good. More theatre than an album to listen to but yeh it’s Bowie.
Expected to enjoy the Penthouse side more than the Pavement but was surprisingly the reverse. Was totally unfamiliar with Heaven 17 before listening but this listen definitely piqued my interest.
Found it a little unremarkable and disappointing. Feel like a lot of it felt like ‘Bang a Gong’ retreads.
Loved the vibe. Really enjoyed the canned live audience sounds surprisingly. The one-two punch of Summertime and Piece of My Heart really brought the whole thing together but I also really enjoyed Turtle Blues
This was a whole vibe. Sensual, gorgeous, moody. That voice is unreal, like silk. Felt so supremely 90s, like I was a fly on the wall of a late night blue film. Exuded just enough sensuality to make you feel some time of way and hope that no one could hear you listening to this art.
I really enjoyed the back half of the album. Everything from ‘I’m A Man’ to the end was stellar. Found the first half a little sleepy but the back half transported me into it.
Apple Music doesn’t have the original track listing so I’m not totally certain I got the right experience but it was pretty solid.
Imagine starting out your catalogue with ‘More Than A Feeling’? Like where do you go from there? Pleasantly surprised with this being a really enjoyable listen. Feel like Boston isn’t talked about enough.
