I like this album because it has some classic tunes, but mostly because it loses its shit from track 7 onwards, its as if Bowie finished the album and then left the tape recording and another band came in and recording 5 more tracks onto the end....madness
Some catchy hooks but most songs are quite forgettable. The final track pulled it back slightly as I do love a rambling jam and I liked the guitar effects.
Never heard of this band, I imagine they must have a bit of a cult status due to only having 3 albums and not being around for long. But I'm putting that aside, I won't be brainwashed by no cult. There are some genuine tunes on this album, Tonight is a fun singalong and You'll Have to Go Sideways is a really fun riff where it sounds like they accidentally left a synth track in towards the end. I do enjoy the not overly polished demo type vibe with albums like this one.
Final bonus points for some laugh-out-loud lyrics (would have gone for 3.5)

Reading into the background of Suba they seemed to be quite influential in this very niche genre of 90s house/ jazz/ Brazilian samba music.....but despite initial intrigue I quickly got bored. Might be fun to listen to at a beach party in the background
Like Jack says, this album is all about the context....they recorded it in one day which gets a star for efficiency if nothing else. I don't really like the harmonica as an instrument that much so it gets knocked down a bit for that

This feels more like an album that was put together for others to pick apart and use how they wish. Some legitimate tunes that had me groovin'. Like a slightly more boring 80s version of The Avalanches
Steely Dan are one of those bands that become a lot more fascinating when you read a bit about them rather than instantly dismissing them like I have been guilty of on this list. Absolute perfectionists, true musicians musicians and it shows in the production and songwriting. Apparently this is one of there worse albums as it was recorded on tour, I look forward to finding some of the others in the generator!
Couple of bangers and I do find them interesting as a band but the album is a little uninspiring overall
A real shame for me this one. It starts so well, after 3 or 4 tracks I thought this had the makings of a new fave for me, I was hovering over the 5 stars, but then the prefab doubt began to creep in and that went down to 4 by track 6 and down to a generous 3 by the end.
Really feels quite self indulgent, maybe a few more listens and I'd find some stuff I like but not really for me
I've tried to listen to this album before because it has a couple of my favourite Roots songs on it, but there is just a bit too much filler in there to make it a true classic
Never listened to an Elvis Costello album before but I really enjoyed this one, dancey, punchy guitars really fun. Much better than the other Elvis
Really liked this, very 80s hints of Depeche Mode and darker goth music but also driving rock songs like 'This Corrosion' which wouldn't be out of place on a Fleetwood Mac album. Some songs maybe went on a bit longer than needed but they were clearly having a lot of fun. Bonus points for the very 80s sax solo on the album opener
I do love a concept album and this one delivers on so many levels. The more I read about Bowie the more interesting the music becomes. Only listened to this a handful of times before but will be listening to more often now
Clearly a really influential album for some big grunge artists of the 90s, I love the almost broken guitar sounds, huge fuzz and mad reverse sections and messed up vocals. Can't say it will be an album I will go back to time and time again but from an influence, production and pure madness point of view this deserves recognition. Gets a boxbat special 3.5 from me

I don't really care for the musical style on a lot of the tracks, but it is really well performed and produced with some HUGE sections in some of the songs. Makes me think it would be better live in parts. Love the album name though

I really like this, shades of MGMT and Tame Impala, nice and dreamy with some interesting weirdness in there such as the broken guitars in Boxing Day. Each Time We Pass was a standout for me, really nice song
There's quite a few things I enjoyed about this album, but it faded quite badly after a strong start. They really have perfected the art of matching the melody and lead synth lines and singing them over and over and over
I'd never heard of Pere Ubu before but they definitely peaked my interest with this album. The lyrical style is borderline ridiculous but I liked it in parts. Some songs feel like an early unpolished version of the Pixies or similar.
Another album which, if it came out today, I might not care for but the fact it was made in the mid 70s makes it much more intriguing
An appropriate haloween offering from the old generator, some good metal riffs etc but Marilyn Manson is still too scary for me

Supergrass are a band where I get a lot more enjoyment from the albums than their big 'hits'. Alright et al have been overplayed to the point of annoyance. Which is why it is doubly refreshing to listen to an album without arguably their top 3 biggest songs on. Sun hits the sky hasn't quite reached that point yet
Some nice jazzy numbers, he does have a cool voice that transports you back in time. I'm judging this on musical merit and not his mad covid conspiracy tendencies
Rolling Stones usually have one bi hit on each album but it seems they managed to find 2 on this one. I feel like the relentless churning out of albums, one a year or more led to this pattern and meant there was a lot of filler a lot of the time
The Cure are definitely a band I've come to appreciate a lot more after watching some live performances and I think a lot of the tracks on this album are case-in-point, they come to life with all the reverb and darkness on the stage. Loads of cool stuff to like on this album, as it's an earlier one feels a little bit rougher which is cool
Quintessential 80s stadium rock. This album is full of sing-along classics and they get an extra star because the drummer has one arm
Feels a really poignant album as it was recorded a few years before they split and Phil Lynott's death. Doesn't capture the 'live' feeling as much as some live albums do, but its a fantastic performance with some absolute tunes on it. Can't believe they were still only in their mid to late 20s when they recorded this
There's a reason why so many of these songs were/ are huge hits. Pop production at its finest
Feels like we've had quite a few albums in this genre now so I was a little bit disappointed when it came up, however, I actually found it quite an enjoyable album, kind of feels like early pop punk at times
I've got some catching up to do so I'm glad to get another album that I know very well. There's so much to love about this album I don't know where to begin, just fills me with so much joy and excitement every time I hear it
I always slag off The Stone Roses because of their reputation in Manchester despite only having one album. But this happens to be that album and it is a damn good one to be fair and very iconic

Early Beatles just isn't that exciting when compared with the later stuff but its all important in the overall story I guess. I've never seen the film, maybe that would give the songs more context. Still well done to the lads for starting to write some original songs for a change.

Me and Kate joke that this is the greatest album ever written.....but it's not entirely a joke, this angsty album is full of tunes that feel very nostalgic now, sound of 90s. Alanis has an interesting voice and the production on this album puts the vocals right in your face. There's also some interesting guitar parts and vocal melodies throughout
I really like a lot of Tom Petty songs but there is so much filler on this album
I've always hated the riff in sweet emotion with the weird backwards bit in it... also listening to this after Led Zeppelin iV, it just doesn't compare on any level....Walk this way basically saves this one
Any album that has Stairway To Heaven on it has to get 5 stars by default, but Led Zeppelin is 42 minutes of gold. Something new to find on every listen still.
I will file this under a similar category to how I feel about Bob Dylan and similar singer songwriters......I'm sure the lyrics are lovely and the vocals put them across very well but I'm not very good at listening to them closely, call me lazy. Pleasant enough though just doesn't light me up with excitement

One of those albums I'm amazed was from the 60s, still sounds quite futuristic in many ways. No doubting Jimi's genius and influence and this is probably his best album overall
I prefer the live version of No Woman No Cry which sort of took the place of this studio one as the main version, however, this is top notch feel good reggae from Bob and the Whales

This has to be one of the most spine chilling albums I've ever heard....Leonard's voice is pretty haunting anyway and add to that the fact he is on deaths door and writing quite openly about it. Really interesting album and a nice collection of songs
I really love Kanye's respect for the album format, they always flow really well and have a nice narrative. Not my fave album of Mr West's but still a great one and he is undoubtedly one of the best/ most influential artists of the 21st century

Y'all know I love comedy music especially when the music is very enjoyable too. Some of the basslines and grooves are awesome and really compliment the funny lyrics
This is a classic in this genre, wouldn't make the list if it came out today but in the late 80s to make this kind of music using mostly analogue equipment is really impressive and it still sounds relevant and modern even now.
Is this a greatest hits album? Because it pretty much has all the crowded house songs I know on it! I have a soft spot for songs like It's Only Natural due to its appearance in FOTC but the album overall isn't very strong and severely tapers off from the middle.
Love that this came up as its an album I've only listened to a couple of times and without paying enough attention. Some of the random sounds, sound effects and generally wacky ideas are so fun and the subject matter is very original too.
Really love this, some of the sampling is top notch starting with the iconic guitar (I think) sound on Mama's Always on Stage. Boogying all the way through
Not an album I'd listened to many times before but actually really enjoyed it. Completely forgot a couple of the songs on it were White Stripes numbers. Still despite this it doesnt feel revolutionary
Reminds me of Tune Yards and Vampire Weekend in parts, that sort of 'New York, we all went to music college' indie. That said its got some really interesting bits particularly vocals wise and the album flowed nicely. Probs a 3.5 but will round up

Very stereotypical of that era and sound, definitely a time and place for it but I found as much as its good to blast out one or two of the songs, by the 5 or 6th track its getting a bit boring and I'm ready to move on

I find Grateful Dead quite an intriguing band that capture my imagination. I have a soft spot for this album which seems to feature in quite a lot of American film/ TV and fits that really well.
I'm slightly biased on this one because most of the album features in one of my favourite live recordings of all time (Live in Sydney 1986) and I do think a few of the slower songs work better in a live context. That said I do still love this album and it has at least 4 of my fave Dire Straits tracks on it. The artwork is iconic too.
Album passed me by quite quickly so I guess it made nice background music with my ears really only tuning in for the big hits. Nice and chilled though
I feel like several of these have been used in indie films, particularly 'Streets of Your Town', and I think the songs work well for that sort of vibe, pleasant and bright but I wouldn't say spectacular
Fun, nostalgic and defines the era well, will always be a 3/5 band for me

This album used to be on in our house quite a bit when I was growing up so I have a soft spot for it. The arpeggiated synth parts I still love and they definitely know how to write a bass riff. Special shout out to Peaches which, as a child, I thought was about Fishes
