Abraxas
Santana
It's very well produced, the sound is rich and deep. It also clearly comes from the era of "this was meant to be listened to in one sitting". Some of the riffs and breaks are a little self indulgent and perhaps didn't age as well as they could have, but I recognize that sort of thing is pretty subjective. It's also very iconic, I could recognize bits and pieces that have been woven into the cultural zeitgeist well enough to have the appropriate amount of "oh, that's where that's from" moments.

Ready To Die
The Notorious B.I.G.
Overwhelming. A textbook of the foundations of hip hop and all the historical structural inequalities and hard realities of modern life. It demands your full attention to such a degree I can't do anything else when it's on but just listen. It's almost too much. Like having a brick dropped on your ear of emotion, style, and straight power. RIP BIG

My Generation
The Who
I think this will forever be the album that perfectly captures that gap in life between graduating high school and becoming a functional adult (a dangerous void from which some never return). The vibe reminds me a lot of what you get from the Scott Pilgrim movies/comics/animated series. An undeserved sense of competence matched with an earnest humanity

Back In Black
AC/DC
Low hanging fruit, this is too obvious when it comes to 'greatest albums of all time'. I'm pretty sure most sound engineers use this album to test speakers because it's just that on point.

American Idiot
Green Day
Meh, I appreciate it for being a pivotal album in the mainstreaming of the last vestiges of American punk, but that's also what I hate about it.

Chirping Crickets
Buddy Holly & The Crickets
Definitely important, you can hear the seeds of later Punk/Rockabilly and a touch of darkness behind the pop-charm, but it's also very repetitive. Jimi Hendrix really ruined my ears for this kind of music. I can appreciate what they're doing, but after Hendrix it just sounds like tinker-toys

Fire Of Love
The Gun Club
This is the first on in this series I hadn't heard before and I am grateful for having it fall in my lap. It's hard to sum up. It has the immediate 'you're either in this community or you want to be' energy of listening to the Violent Femmes. It has the campy punk vibes of the Return of the Living Dead (1985) soundtrack. And it has the earnest rawness of legitimate punk music. 4/5, would recommend

Happy Sad
Tim Buckley
I hadn't hear this one before, but you can 100% hear it's influence in a lot of contemporary music. Sad, vulnerable, authentic without being cheesy. I total mood album. Great for what it is, but you totes gotta be in the mood for it. I imagine it would be great for driving.

The definition of a hidden gem. I put this album on repeat for the entire day and never stopped finding reasons to appreciate it.
