What amazes me is that what was viewed as such a stylistic, and genre, leap sounds so natural and honest…I suppose that’s a measure of his creative genius
I’m a fan, but this one doesn’t fire me up as much as others…dunno why, maybe at times it seemed less urgent, less poetic
A great example of 1974 Nashville sound: impeccable production, session musicians at the top of their game, and Jones’s voice is incredible….BUT the subject matter and the way it’s approached; damn I need a drink…
My second listen (popped up on a friend’s list the other day and he was already a fan, so….)….not sure I’m getting all of it; I see the appeal, but it’s not what I’d reach for ordinarily…definitively British, and I like the melodies and approach, but for me something is missing and I don’t know what
I don’t get it…it’s okay, but I don’t hear anything that might have been groundbreaking or otherwise significant…it’s a pleasant enough listen, and competently produced, but what makes it, per NME, one of the 500 best…not sure I need to spend time researching that…maybe I’m just a rube
What’s left to say?..a critical moment in the evolution of rock, Americana, alt-country…take your pick…also a demonstration of what can happen when you allow a group of musicians to percolate and figure out what they want to play and how they want to play it…
It was not my cup of tea in 1977…today I appreciate it as a step in the development of a unique artist who, like Ray Charles somewhat, was always reinventing his art, his style, himself

My guess is this is one of the best examples of the type; it’s just not anything I was interested in…seems to be a lot of frustration and anger in there, much like punk and some New Wave; it’s just a different form of expression
Reminded me pretty quickly of Husker Du, who’d been playing for 5 years or so when these guys got together…will need a closer listen to sort out how lyrics compare, content- and poetry-wise

Interesting…don’t know that I’d ever listened to the whole thing before…if it was the starting point for prog-rock I get it, though I’m pretty sure Genesis and Yes already had their thoughts in mind by this point…they all seemed to be coming at it from different points, no doubt because of different influences and goals
I’m sure many people appreciate how well produced this is, how precise the playing is (?is there a human in there?), how you could dance all night to this if you had the right dose of X…but it’s just not what I’m into

I can’t listen to it anymore…he can’t decide if he’s Leonard Cohen or Lou Reed or somebody-the-fuck else, and the arrangements, and playing, are all over the map…it’s not pretty

Interesting, very interesting…seeing McLaren’s name I was afraid it would be a shambles…but no…it’s very listenable, very catchy, a very subtle way to start people listening to genres they might not otherwise have explored
