Abattoir Blues / The Lyre of Orpheus
Nick Cave & The Bad SeedsEpic. Have only listened to Nick Cave in passing over the years, and this album was be to me. The range, intensity, and beauty of this album was striking.

Incredible album for my first selection. Original, intense, and dark. Owned and listened to Substance since college but not this iconic album.
First two songs are iconic and amazing. Side B was less compelling.
Ethereal, unique album
So many incredible songs on one album. The Only Living Boy in New York is my favorite, but the Boxer is not far behind. Honestly would prefer more stripped down versions of most songs.
Had high expectations but disappointed
Great vibes. Glad I listened to this one. Loses some interest toward the end but will be listening to it again
Fantastic album
Powerful and beautiful album. Owned this record for 30+ years and remains one my favorites.
Incredible album with so many gorgeous songs. Will always favor the first three REM albums because of when and how I first heard them, but Automatic for the People is a perfect record from beginning to end.
Goofy, dated, annoying
Such a distinctive sound. Great songs and lyrics.
Mostly derivative of the kinks. I love the kinks but not this.
Beautiful and innovative songs with so much texture
Great vibe although quickly turns into background music
Cool sounds especially on songs with organ and horn section. Nice addition to 60s guitar instrumental rock.
Amazing record
Terrible album, lacks musicality
Hard to pick one but possibly my favorite Neil Young album
I think this album will grow on me with repeated listens. Unique textures and the lead singers haunting voice are the stand out qualities.
Chill
‘Girl from the North Country’ is one of the most beautiful folks songs ever. So many great songs on this album.
Anthemic and powerful and original
I appreciate the originality of this album and why it was influential. That said, not sure I would listen to it again.
Lush, beautiful harmonies
Love hurts it’s such an incredible song, and I had not listened to their version. The rest of the album is pretty but less memorable.
Was not familiar with this one. Some great songs in the tradition of kinks and xtc.
Dark, atmospheric, different any other parts of the cure’s music. Amazing album.
Never heard this album, but it’s a great one.
Haven’t listened to the doors since high school. The organ is the most distinctive and engaging part of the sound to me.
Had high expectations. Best songs sounded like Bowie and the rest did not stand out,
Several stand out songs including girl with a coma.
Solid but eclipsed by back to black
Another new album and artist. I loved the intensity of the songs.
Catchy
Incredible groove. Sometimes albums that pair underappreciated musicians from a prior generation with a cast of contemporaries fails to hold together, but this is an exceptional album. I’m in the Mood with Bonnie Raitt is the standout but many other great songs.
Maybe this would grow on me or be better with the right drugs
Amazing record, especially the first side. A bit less consistent on the second, bur hard to argue with an album that includes those first 4 songs.
A couple songs stand out but reissued bland steely dan record.
Went back and forth because Radiohead has a couple better albums, but this is amazing regardless. Sail to the moon is my current favorite among many other great songs.
Epic. Have only listened to Nick Cave in passing over the years, and this album was be to me. The range, intensity, and beauty of this album was striking.
Terrible album. Songs sound the same. No originality.
Cliche filled crap. A song about cowboys, another about cowgirls. The bar for a double live album should be high. This had bad songs, poor recording quality, and a pathetic album cover.
Fun and goofy at times. Appreciated the sitar and rhythmic dynamics. Hard to understand how its on the list.
This album was much weaker than I expected or remembered. A few standout songs, but a lot of filler.
Good listen. Appreciated the interweaving of dialogue from samurai films and creative lyrics.
Jarring and chaotic at times. Enjoyed this album. Will have to listen to it more to get a stronger opinion.
This is my second Roxy Music album, and I had higher expectations. Some songs were okay but overall the album felt derivative. Will give it another listen at some point.
Does not age well. Time of the season is a great song. The rest is filler.
Another band trying to sound like the Kinks. This one is better than some of the other ones from the 90s.
Melodramatic, spacey
Extraordinary album. Magic energy and lyrics. Favorite song: ‘It takes a lot to laugh…’
New album for me. Great sound and range. Looking forward to listening to this more.
Feels gimmicky with over reliance on falsetto. Soulless.
Disappointing. I like ABBA but not this album. The songs are listless and lack any groove or energy.
Lush, gorgeous, and personal songwriting. Perfect album.
Achingly beautiful
Gorgeous voice and amazing harmonies. ‘Too Far Gone’ and ‘Boulder to Birmingham’ are so rich and emotional. The album is overproduced with arrangements that detract from some of the songs. Fortunately, Emmylou Harris transcends these limitations of 1970s Nashville.
So many layers, musically and lyrically. Brilliant and creative.
Classic
New to me. I appreciate the energy and range.
Great groove and distinctive sound. Not a huge fan of the extended 'jams', but I appreciate the innovation and significance.
Amazing groove, and loved reading about the political context and reaction to this album.
Listened to this twice. I was skeptical but warmed up to it some on a second pass. I also appreciated some of the later songs on the album more than the first few. A bit too many vocal runs but moving at times.
Sentimental attachment to this and other Billy Joel albums from 70s and early 80s. Amazing storytelling and musicianship on his best album.
Perfect day is a perfect song. Satellite of love if fantastic too, and, of course, Walk on the wild side is iconic. The rest is very forgettable.
Elevator music
The first two Pixies albums are so great and innovative. This album feels like a band quickly losing steam. Few standout songs, and some feel like weaker versions of one’s on the first two albums.
Amazing rhythm and songwriting.
Pure, authentic, heartbreaking at times
At its best, this album is powerful and cathartic. The rest of the time it feels redundant and boring.
Really liked this album.
