1001 Albums Summary

Impressive range and virtuosity, but not always my thing. Sometimes totally my thing.

Listened to it in a crowded subway full of highschool students. Felt both superior and silly.

This album didn’t hit the way it did when I first heard it back I. The 90’s, but it’s still got some really good tracks on it. The first time I listened to it a sweet high-school student of mine gave me his cd player and headphones to listen to because I had a migraine on the bus to a ski trip. I didn’t end up taking a nap, but I loved the album.

I don’t really have any context for this album but I enjoyed listening to it.

If it’s 1998 I might be able to enjoy parts of this album ironically, but it’s 2025 and while I was entertained by some of the ridiculous lyrics, overall this album just predicts exactly who Kid Rock has become, a stupid, loud m, racist MAGA Stan. As for the music, frankly it’s like someone took hip hop, grunge and rock, mashed it together and took out anything about those genres that makes them uncomfortable to white dudes and then added a truly phenomenal number of references to penis size. I don’t know if it’s for the greater good that music exists that allows a certain type of dude in a pickup truck to listen to music that’s loud and pretending to be edgy but that at no time asks the listener (if the listener is that dude in a pickup) to inhabit a reality other than his own. I got to inhabit a reality not my own and I’d like to get that time back. Two tracks in I quipped to a friend “it’s like Beck, but for dudes who want to imagine drinking on a yacht with women with big boobs.” Two stars for the mashup of it all and the dick rhymes. That’s it.

Some of this was great and some of it I could barely get through. I don’t know…

I’m bewildered by this album being in the list. The Beach Boys are great, but the content on this one is just not that interesting. Forever a fan of the falsetto, but that’s it.
