It had small moments but mostly forgettable. Way too long. Reminded me of The Refreshments at times, but without the charm of not taking themselves too seriously (this may be an insane opinion caused by being unfamiliar with the genre).
The big three are great. The more upbeat songs are nice head bobbers. I didn't really care for the slow stuff.
The initial song, Get Innocuous!, lead me to believe this was going to be more interesting than the album ended up being. I liked All My Friends (I think I'd heard it before). Someone Great was OK.
👍Get Innocuous!, All My Friends
I'd only heard Bad Moon Rising before (which is great). The whole album has that great CCR sound, but nothing really stood out to me apart from Bad Moon Rising. Lodi probably came closest.
👍Bad Moon Rising
I assumed this was going to be gangster rap from the name. Turned out to be rather rad 80s hip hop. Pretty fun album.
👍 Black Steel In The Hour Of Chaos, Rebel Without A Pause
I'd heard a few of the singles, but never listened to the actual album. Loved it.
👍 After Hours, Left My Wallet in El Segundo, Bonita Applebum, Can I Kick It?
It was interesting, but not for me.
Very unfamiliar with Bowie beyond the superhits. I enjoyed Time the most, followed by Jean Genie, but the rest felt pretty forgettable. Not really looking forward to 8 more Bowie albums if this is representative.
I did not enjoy any of the songs enough to formally "Like".
Overall a decent sound but largely forgettable. Hoodoo/Voodoo Medicine Man is probably the most interesting song. The dulcimer parts were very surprising in what is otherwise a wall of sound. I somehow wasn't prepared for how horny Tyler was.
No songs Liked.
I've never listened to a Big Band album before. I had an assumption it would all sound very loud and dense, but I was surprised by the variety of sound and how soft and smooth some of it was.
I found myself unconsciously toe tapping from time to time.
No songs "Liked" but I did enjoy the album.
This was my favorite album as a kid, but it's been many years since I listened to it. I was worried listening to it again would dispel its mythical status in my head, but I was relieved to find I still loved it.
I'm resisting the temptation to rate it a 5 because I know it doesn't truly deserve it (even the 4 is pushing it) but I really wanted to.
👍Longview, Welcome to Paradise, Basket Case, When I Come Around
First time hearing Manic Street Preachers. A few songs in, I was thinking there was a chance I was going to love this album. That didn't last, though, and I only ended up liking it.
👍Kevin Carter
I've never heard Kraftwerk before. While I recognize how influential this and Kraftwerk must have been in 1977 I really hated this album. If I have to hear "Trans. Europe. Express." one more time I might lose it. I found the whole thing so obnoxiously repetitive. If it weren't so repetitive, I think I might actually like it.
I respect them as pioneers but I'll stick to more modern electronic music where it's enjoyable even when highly repetitive.
I liked the overall sound of this album. Some stood out slightly (Stonemilker, Black Lake), while some bordered on being annoying (Mouth Mantra) but overall I think it was good.
I knew this album well already.
👍Dead Leaves and the Dirty Ground, Fell In Love With a Girl, We're Going To Be Friends
I know Depeche Mode mostly from indirectly listening to them through my brother, who is a fan. Personal Jesus I knew well. Enjoy the Silence also (though I'd never heard the "silence" on the back half of the track that they cut out of the radio edit).
I didn't know many of the other songs, though. I liked Waiting for the Night. Sea of Sin (I listened to the Deluxe version of the album) sounded awfully familiar and sure enough, Casey Lane by Bloodhound Gang "adapted" the melody.
👍Personal Jesus, Waiting for the Night, Enjoy the Silence
Pretty interesting hearing this proto-punk early glam rock album. I found it just OK but appreciate the significance it holds. Jet Boy got me unconsciously toe tapping, though.
👍Jet Boy
I couldn't make heads or tails of what to expect from the title/band name, the album art, and then reading the Wikipedia summary.
What I got was unfortunately less interesting than all of that. Not bad though. Some variety to it at least, but nothing stood out to me as something I'd want to listen to again.
Nothing Liked.
I Luv U; Fix UP, Look Sharp; Hold Ya Mouf; and Jus' a Rascal were all fairly interesting. I'm tempted to give it 3 stars based on how many I ultimately found interesting, but this is just something I'd never go out of my way to listen to. It was rarely annoying and sometimes briefly good, so 2 stars it is.
I started out worrying I was too cynical for this music but managed to warm up to it.
Village Ghetto Land I actively disliked, then right after Contusion was rad.
Sir Duke was fun. Isn't She Lovely, As, and Another Star were good.
👍Contusion
Don't Give Up was unexpectedly profound. Definitely the highlight for me. In Your Eyes was probably the best of the more typical sounding tracks.
There are particular synth sounds throughout that make it sound cheaper than I think it deserves (though they were no doubt quite exciting and experimental at the time).
👍Don't Give Up
Starts out with a few bangers. Fizzled out by the halfway point for me, though. I liked this more than Pump.
👍Back In the Saddle, Last Child
I like the sound, but nothing in particular stood out to me. Feels like a very foundational album upon which others built.
It's been a very long time since I've listened to this album. I'd grown a little tired of hearing the same 5 or so Nirvana radio songs for decades and had forgotten just had good this album was. Tempted to give it 5 but ultimately landed on 4 after sitting on my decision over the weekend.
👍About a Girl, Lake of Fire, Where Did You Sleep Last Night
I've only heard the radio songs from Oasis and now it's kind of clear why. The other songs on this album are pretty forgettable. I accept that Wonderwall is good, but I've heard it more than enough times in my life and am fine never hearing it again. Don't Look Back in Anger and Champagne Supernova are better than I remember but not so good that I want to listen to them more.
I knew Son of a Preacher Man (probably from hearing it in Pulp Fiction, I realized after reading more about Dusty) but none of the others. I liked the music, and Son of a Preacher Man is obviously a great song.
I found this interesting, but I feel like I need to listen to more jazz (and more accessible jazz) to learn to fully appreciate it.
Many of the songs had this slow transition from mellow to fast that I thought was great. This is more of a background listen for me if I ever revisit it.
Nothing formally Liked.
Not really my style of music but beautiful voices and singing.
I cannot decide if I love her voice or hate her voice. I think it's that it sounds great during parts and bad during others.
I'm having trouble rating this one.
It's a good album, but I like the tone of the first album better.
👍Green Light
I'd never heard of Fairport Convention and that name, album cover, and album name were not promising, but I really enjoyed this, especially the first more English folk sounding songs.
👍Autopsy, A Sailor's Life
I've never listened to Funk Rock. I Rreally enjoyed this album. I went right back for seconds after I finished it.
👍Maggot Brain (probably more as I revisit)
I got this and Unhalfbricking almost back to back. This one felt a lot more refined, but I also found it less interesting. It really showcased her voice though.
I enjoyed how live it actually felt complete with mistakes. Great voice. Not something I'd go out of my way to listen to again though.
Solid album. I enjoyed her voice more than Sarah Vaughan's (which I had immediately before this one) but the music less. Again, not something I'd go out of my way to listen to, though.
That was quite the experience. I contemplated giving it two stars for that, but ultimately I think it's just Frank Zappa showing off his performative cynicism, rather than music.
I feel like once I know progressive rock better I might appreciate this more, but as it stands it wasn't noteworthy to me.
Love his singing, but nothing on this album stood out to me as something I'd listen to again. The little bitter moments here and there were kind of funny to hear.
Not bad but mostly not noteworthy for me. I disliked On Any Other Day. Walking on the Moon was kind of fun and of course Message in a Bottle (which was the only song I knew prior).
Nothing Liked.
I was sort of expecting more of a wall of sound but it was more...smooth? than I expected. I liked it.
👍Phantom of the Opera, Transylvania
I did manage to get through this one. That was challenging though. Not for me.
I liked the sound. Kind of like a smoother version of The Ramones.
I've long loved this album.
👍What's Golden, High Fidelity
I sadly did not enjoy this album. I was very interested in Talking Heads too.
Nothing stood out to me other than Sunshine of Your Love
I really hated it when I first listened to it, but I had a headache at the time, so I gave it another shot the next day. It was better the second time but only a star extra. As a piece of political art, it's great, musically it's so-so.
Pretty fun album. Didn't realize that Foo Fighter's song was a cover.
Really enjoyed this album. Mainly the hits that I already knew. There were a few songs a disliked or thought were so-so, mostly the more pop sounding ones (Cecilia excluded).
👍Bridge Over Troubled Water, El Condor Pasa (If I Could), Cecilia, The Only Living Boy in New York
Already loved this album (and most of Radiohead's albums).
👍Everything In Its Right Place, How to Disappear Completely, Optimistic, Idioteque, Morning Bell
Nothing stood out but a nice toe tapper.
I cannot fathom why this is on the list. It's not bad, but it's pretty unnoteworthy.
Cool album and not something I'd ever have listened to. This is why I'm doing this.
👍Quattro - Worlds Drift In
Not really for me, but I can recognize why some people love this stuff. I think I'd normally give this 2 stars, but it's so inoffensive it feels rude to put it that low, so I'm giving it an extra star.
Not bad but kind of mostly had that generic Beach Boys sound.
Hearing this album for the first time started a multi-year love affair with trip-hop. Formative albums like this are what I save my 5-star ratings for.
👍Wandering Star, It's A Fire, Numb, Roads, Glory Box
Some moments were interesting, but a lot of repetitiveness that started to annoy me.
Good sound. Not as many standouts as I was expecting.
👍Freebird
Not too bad. Breakdown is...almost good, but it never quite gets there. American Girl is pretty good.
👍American Girl
Mrs. Robinson was good. A Shady Haze of Winter wasn't bad. Most of it was very forgettable, though.
👍Mrs. Robinson
It's been some years since I've heard One, but it's even better than I remember. I'm not often in the mood for heavy metal, but this would definitely be an album I'd want to hear when I am.
👍One
A lot more artsy than I was expecting but in a good way.
👍Shadow of a Doubt
A banger of a Christmas album. I'm not into Christmas music but at least I now know an album to throw on if someone asks for some.
Totally surprised by this album. I only knew Meat Loaf by his mega hits. This was a lot of fun. Has a concept album feel to it without being overly indulgent about it.
I'm surprised I don't really care for this.
Not really for me, but fine music and a good voice. There were moments here and there that stood out that bumped it up to a 3 for me but without those I think this would be a solid 2.
Lots of head bobbing to this one.
👍Three Little Birds, One Love / People Get Ready
Nice and chill to listen to. I feel like it's missing whatever magic Marley (and Tosh) had from time to time when they worked together.
Honestly kind of bored by most of this album except for Police & Thieves.
👍Police & Thieves
I enjoyed how experimental this was, even if I'll likely never seek it out to listen to again.
Much more motown than I'm used to having mostly only heard the hits from The Beatles. The Beatles written songs definitely feel a lot less polished than the covers, but there's definitely something special there.
14 songs in 33 minutes was impressive. I thought only punk albums did that.
