I've already listened to this album before, but just once, and I didn't remember much from it. This is Dylan's first album where he makes the switch from acoustic guitar (as seen on his previous albums) to electric guitar. Personally, I like Dylan's music much more on those first few albums where it's just acoustic, but that's a personal preference. That being said, the album is still quite good - the first half is basically the new electric sound, while the second half contains acoustic songs. The electric songs are nice and memorable (Subterranean Homesick Blues, She Belongs to Me, Maggie's Farm), but I enjoyed the electric songs on the following album (Highway 61 Revisited) more. The standout track of the album to me is the most popular song on the album, named Mr. Tambourine Man (another acoustic song).
Overall, even though I do like Bob Dylan, I've seen people rave about it, but it's not as spectacular as some describe it. Solid album, but certainly not my favorite of his. Maybe, if I'd revisit it some time later, I'd enjoy it more. But right now, I'd give it a nice 7.5 / 10.
I hadn't listened to this album ever before, and I wish it stayed that way. The Beatles were legendary, but part of why that was is because the four of them together created something special - magic, as you can call it - but on their own, it didn't always go that way, especially for John Lennon. People rave about him like he's the best songwriter ever.. but honestly? I think he's quite overrated after listening to Imagine. The titular track is beautiful - albeit quite hypocritical coming from Lennon - and I did very much like Crippled Inside (even though it's a bit odd) and Jealous Guy. After those tracks, though, the album takes a nosedive and it becomes quite bland and generic, especially for one who is regarded as one of the best songwriters of all time. I even had to skip "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier, Mama", as it was just six minutes of the same lyric being repeated over and over again. Quite disappointed, and I don't understand why this album is on the "1001 albums you must hear before you die" list. 6 / 10, and that's me being generous.
Never listened to it before. Have listened to OK Computer, which is a better album, but arguably, it also took a while for me to "understand" and get into. I suspect it'll be the same with this album. It's a good one, but not one I'd put on soon, unless I'd be in the mood to do so. I like that it's more of an album experience (as opposed to a bunch of loose songs together). 8 / 10 for me right now
I LOVE PINK FLOYD! The Wall is one of their best albums (although I still prefer DSOTM and WYWH to this one) and it contains my all-time favorite PF song (Comfortably Numb). HIGHLY recommend anyone listens to this, it's peak. 10 / 10.
Never heard of 'em before but I really liked the album. I like that it's a kind of concept album. Music is good, and I'll definitely revisit this one some time in the future. Great recommendation. 8 / 10
Never heard it before. I think it's a good album. There's influences from different music genres, which I appreciate. First half of the album is (much) better than the second; the second seems to drag on a little too much. 7.5 / 10
Pretty safe music. Sounds like discount Oasis (makes sense, since it's from the same era and genre). The album plays it quite safe to the point where it's almost a bit generic. OK album, but not one I'd play again soon. 5 / 10.
Quite liked this one. Something different than what I usually listen to, but even then, it's a great album. 7.5 / 10
Weird album, but I definitely liked it. Lots of different influences of music from different artists. Odd lyrics at times though, but definitely ahead of its time. 7.5 / 10.
Besides The Wall, this might be the best album so far. It's got some good psychedelic tunes to it, and I'm all here for it. Stand-out tracks are the instrumental La femme d'argent, as well as the two following tracks Sexy Boy and All I Need. I'll be definitely coming back to this one more often than not. 9.5 / 10.
Nice pop album, but nothing too crazy about it. I'd put it on if I wanted just some background music playing for easy listening. Standout tracks are - obviously - the hit All I Wanna Do, as well as the song Strong Enough. 7 / 10.
I had some fears when the album started that this was going to be one of the lower rated albums so far, but I actually quite liked it as it went on. It's a nice soul/funk album, with some GREAT basslines on it. "Runaway Child, Running Wild" was the standout track and the big surprise to me. Solid album, kinda fire. 7 / 10.
I've never been a big fan of U2. That said, I don't think this album was bad. It wasn't that spectacular either. Pretty generic, if you ask me. "One" is a nice standout track, but that's about it. 6 / 10
Started off a bit boring, but got better as the album went on. Some dubbed this as early heavy metal (combined with blues I guess), which sounds nice, but it also kind of sounds dated to me. The final track, Second Time Around, has some killer riffs in my opinion. 6 / 10.
A single man with an acoustic guitar. 28 minutes of beautiful and haunting music. Two years after this album was released, Nick Drake killed himself. With that context in the back of my head, I put on this album for the first time. A look into the mind of a gifted artist in pain, shortly before his death. 28 minutes of going into his life, looking around, and then leaving again for good. Some compare Nick Drake to Van Gogh, in the sense that his work was never appreciated during his (arguably short) lifespan, and it was only after their deaths that their work became more known and appreciated. What a great piece of work, and a life that was over far too quickly. 9 / 10.
I like Springsteen quite a lot. I love his 70s albums, which is up there with some of the best tracks ever produced. Now, I do have a small dislike for modern (i.e. post 9/11) country-ish music, which The Rising seems to be. Some songs, such as Mary's Place, do sound like the old Springsteen again, but this modern post-9/11 take on music is just not my thing. I do acknowledge that the music itself is fine, and undoubtedly very Springsteen-esque, but unlike his earlier albums, this just didn't really hit for me. 6 / 10.
Banger of an album. Sounded like a greatest hits album at times; I literally didn't know so many of these big hits of hers were just on one album (and made when she was 21yo as well!). What can I say? Strong songs, strong voice, strong album. 8.5 / 10
Solid album. Hadn't listened to his stuff before either. For a debut album, it's quite impressive. I understand why this is on the 1001 albums you must hear before you die list. 7.5 / 10
