I've already listened to this album before, but just once, and I didn't remember much from it. This is Dylan's first album where he makes the switch from acoustic guitar (as seen on his previous albums) to electric guitar. Personally, I like Dylan's music much more on those first few albums where it's just acoustic, but that's a personal preference. That being said, the album is still quite good - the first half is basically the new electric sound, while the second half contains acoustic songs. The electric songs are nice and memorable (Subterranean Homesick Blues, She Belongs to Me, Maggie's Farm), but I enjoyed the electric songs on the following album (Highway 61 Revisited) more. The standout track of the album to me is the most popular song on the album, named Mr. Tambourine Man (another acoustic song).
Overall, even though I do like Bob Dylan, I've seen people rave about it, but it's not as spectacular as some describe it. Solid album, but certainly not my favorite of his. Maybe, if I'd revisit it some time later, I'd enjoy it more. But right now, I'd give it a nice 7.5 / 10.
I hadn't listened to this album ever before, and I wish it stayed that way. The Beatles were legendary, but part of why that was is because the four of them together created something special - magic, as you can call it - but on their own, it didn't always go that way, especially for John Lennon. People rave about him like he's the best songwriter ever.. but honestly? I think he's quite overrated after listening to Imagine. The titular track is beautiful - albeit quite hypocritical coming from Lennon - and I did very much like Crippled Inside (even though it's a bit odd) and Jealous Guy. After those tracks, though, the album takes a nosedive and it becomes quite bland and generic, especially for one who is regarded as one of the best songwriters of all time. I even had to skip "I Don't Wanna Be A Soldier, Mama", as it was just six minutes of the same lyric being repeated over and over again. Quite disappointed, and I don't understand why this album is on the "1001 albums you must hear before you die" list. 6 / 10, and that's me being generous.
Never listened to it before. Have listened to OK Computer, which is a better album, but arguably, it also took a while for me to "understand" and get into. I suspect it'll be the same with this album. It's a good one, but not one I'd put on soon, unless I'd be in the mood to do so. I like that it's more of an album experience (as opposed to a bunch of loose songs together). 8 / 10 for me right now
I LOVE PINK FLOYD! The Wall is one of their best albums (although I still prefer DSOTM and WYWH to this one) and it contains my all-time favorite PF song (Comfortably Numb). HIGHLY recommend anyone listens to this, it's peak. 10 / 10.
Never heard of 'em before but I really liked the album. I like that it's a kind of concept album. Music is good, and I'll definitely revisit this one some time in the future. Great recommendation. 8 / 10
Never heard it before. I think it's a good album. There's influences from different music genres, which I appreciate. First half of the album is (much) better than the second; the second seems to drag on a little too much. 7.5 / 10
Pretty safe music. Sounds like discount Oasis (makes sense, since it's from the same era and genre). The album plays it quite safe to the point where it's almost a bit generic. OK album, but not one I'd play again soon. 5 / 10.
Quite liked this one. Something different than what I usually listen to, but even then, it's a great album. 7.5 / 10
Weird album, but I definitely liked it. Lots of different influences of music from different artists. Odd lyrics at times though, but definitely ahead of its time. 7.5 / 10.
Besides The Wall, this might be the best album so far. It's got some good psychedelic tunes to it, and I'm all here for it. Stand-out tracks are the instrumental La femme d'argent, as well as the two following tracks Sexy Boy and All I Need. I'll be definitely coming back to this one more often than not. 9.5 / 10.
Nice pop album, but nothing too crazy about it. I'd put it on if I wanted just some background music playing for easy listening. Standout tracks are - obviously - the hit All I Wanna Do, as well as the song Strong Enough. 7 / 10.
I had some fears when the album started that this was going to be one of the lower rated albums so far, but I actually quite liked it as it went on. It's a nice soul/funk album, with some GREAT basslines on it. "Runaway Child, Running Wild" was the standout track and the big surprise to me. Solid album, kinda fire. 7 / 10.
I've never been a big fan of U2. That said, I don't think this album was bad. It wasn't that spectacular either. Pretty generic, if you ask me. "One" is a nice standout track, but that's about it. 6 / 10
Started off a bit boring, but got better as the album went on. Some dubbed this as early heavy metal (combined with blues I guess), which sounds nice, but it also kind of sounds dated to me. The final track, Second Time Around, has some killer riffs in my opinion. 6 / 10.
A single man with an acoustic guitar. 28 minutes of beautiful and haunting music. Two years after this album was released, Nick Drake killed himself. With that context in the back of my head, I put on this album for the first time. A look into the mind of a gifted artist in pain, shortly before his death. 28 minutes of going into his life, looking around, and then leaving again for good. Some compare Nick Drake to Van Gogh, in the sense that his work was never appreciated during his (arguably short) lifespan, and it was only after their deaths that their work became more known and appreciated. What a great piece of work, and a life that was over far too quickly. 9 / 10.
I like Springsteen quite a lot. I love his 70s albums, which is up there with some of the best tracks ever produced. Now, I do have a small dislike for modern (i.e. post 9/11) country-ish music, which The Rising seems to be. Some songs, such as Mary's Place, do sound like the old Springsteen again, but this modern post-9/11 take on music is just not my thing. I do acknowledge that the music itself is fine, and undoubtedly very Springsteen-esque, but unlike his earlier albums, this just didn't really hit for me. 6 / 10.
Banger of an album. Sounded like a greatest hits album at times; I literally didn't know so many of these big hits of hers were just on one album (and made when she was 21yo as well!). What can I say? Strong songs, strong voice, strong album. 8.5 / 10
Solid album. Hadn't listened to his stuff before either. For a debut album, it's quite impressive. I understand why this is on the 1001 albums you must hear before you die list. 7.5 / 10
Little hidden gem, in my opinion. Reminds me a lot of Neil Young too. If you're into that kind of music, highly recommend you check this out. 8 / 10
I mean.. what can I say about this album that hasn't been said before? Such a shame that it's Buckley's only album before he unfortunately passed away.. such a promising career, gone to waste. But Grace is such a phenomenal album, definitely a must hear before you die. 9.5 / 10
I was a bit worried going into this album, seeing as a lot of the reviews were quite negative on this one. But to be fair, it pleasantly surprised me. It's kind of a Broadway musical in album form, and I very much dig it. My biggest gripe with it is that although it sounds grand and majestic, it doesn't really seem to go anywhere. Should this be on the 1001 albums you must hear before you die list? I'm not sure, but it is definitely better than the reviews made it out to be. 7 / 10
I like the Stones, but somehow I expected a little bit more from this album. Gimme Shelter and You Can't Always Get What You Want are amazing tracks, but the others don't really stand out to me THAT much. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the album. 7.5 / 10
Music slop. Never heard it before, never will listen to it again. It's way too long, and it's mostly just shitty sounds that don't sound good to me. Hard skip. 1 / 10 - would give less than 1 star if I could.
Some nice (mostly) instrumental African music. Not fully my thing, but I can see the value of it having it present in this list. 7 / 10
Fun little album, nothing spectacular. Nice background music, I guess. 7 / 10
Not my music at all. I liked maybe one song, but one album? Way too much. 4 / 10
Great '90s pop album, can definitely see why this was nominated so much back in the day. Great hits such as You Oughta Know and Hand in my Pocket, but the rest of the album also sounds completed and amazing. Good stuff, definitely one of the albums you must hear before you die. 9 / 10
Pretty solid album. Stands out to me for some reason, but can't tell you why. One popular song that I apparently already knew but never knew it was from this artist or this album (to be fair, I had never heard of both the artist and album beefore though). 8 / 10
Didn't expect much from it, or anything at all, but I very much enjoyed it. A bit of a unique sound compared to some of the other albums I've listened to from the list so far. Would listen again. 7.5 / 10
One of the best hiphop albums ever made. Even though it's absolutely not my genre, I really digged it, and I could tell the artists had a very fun time making and recording the album. One minor issue that I had is that it felt just a bit too long to be a perfect album. 9 / 10
Duke Ellington is one of the greatest when it comes to jazz. I haven't heard much of his music in my life, but his name alone weighs a lot in the music scene. That said, I did not really care for this album. It's fine, but nothing to really write home about. 6 / 10
Slop. Kid Rock is as great of an artist as a mediocre high school band, and that would even be insulting to all high school bands out there. Maybe white incels or single dads think this is cool music, but it only exists as conservative slop who thinks mainstream music is too "woke". If I could give less than 1 star, hell, even less than 0 stars, I'd do it. Get this shit off the list, please, thank you. 1 / 10
Great funk album, stood the test of time. Some great stuff on there, and I'll be giving this another listen soon. One of their other albums has been on my list for a long time; pretty sure it's also on this big 1001 list somewhere. 8 / 10
Great album from an artist that left us too soon. It's truly an experience to go through this album front to back, and I should really dive into more of her work. 8.5 / 10
Dreamy music, which I like. The songs don't really go anywhere, and after a while, it all starts to sound the same, and I can't distinguish between the different songs anymore. Pleasant to listen to, but only once for me. 6.5 / 10
Majestic album. The Beatles combined with theatrics of Queen makes up for a very pleasant and great album. Of course, "Mr. Blue Sky" is a stand-out song, but so are the first three tracks of the album. Will definitely be revisiting this one. 9 / 10
Apparently this is one of her more experimental albums and thus least accessible, but either this statement is false, or I just like her music, because I very much enjoyed this album. Got some great stuff on it. Also she produced it herself, which is kinda cool. Will definitely be jumping into her other albums soon. 8 / 10
Jazz album. Not much to say about it. Don't hate it, don't like it necessarily. It sounds nice, but not my cup of tea. 6 / 10
Boring album, boring voice, horrible production - I can barely hear the instruments over a monotone voice. I would have given it one star higher, were it not for the fact that the artist was a literal nazi, or at the very least a racist. 2 / 10
Starts off strong, but gets more boring the longer it goes on. Reminds me a lot of Nick Drake, but less depressing. Fine to listen to once, but not a second time. 6 / 10
Amazing album, it's the start of the career of one of the greatest rock bands to ever exist. While they did have some amazing stuff later on, this debut album is a bit too much blues for my liking. "Good Times Bad Times" might be one of the best openers to an album ever, and "Babe I'm Gonna Leave You" is a perfect follow up. "Dazed and Confused" and "Communication Breakdown" also are instant classics. I have reviewed this album before, and while I gave it a 7 / 10 back then, I do think it should be a bit higher than that, but it's a bit too heavy on the blues for me, so I'll give it a 8 / 10.
Good stuff, but not really my taste. "Hurt" is easily my favorite track, but the cover by Johnny Cash (not featured on this album) is still the superior version. 7.5 / 10
Good stuff, albeit a bit samey. Nice to listen to on the background, I guess. 6.5 / 10
Weird / odd but fun album. Not entirely my thing though. I liked "Rock Lobster" a lot, definitely the highlight track for me. 7 / 10
Good stuff. Highlight track is obviously "Everybody Hurts", but there's some more on here that I quite liked. Will definitely be revisiting this one. 8 / 10
Good but average country music. Nothing really stands out, but it's not bad per se either. Just some nice music to play on the background while doing something else, and you'll have a good time. 6 / 10
Sounds like I'm at someone's fucking funeral. Boring shit that shouldn't be on this list. Almost fell asleep listening to it. 3 / 10
Two back to back live albums; I'd argue that these shouldn't be on this list, but oh well. I like The Who, but I never really dug into their early work (or any work at all besides the famous songs, to be fair). That said, I tend to enjoy good live albums, and I'm glad to report that this one is worth listening to, even if I don't know many of the songs. The sound is clean, sharp, and the band plays well and cohesive. If you like The Who, this one is worth giving a try. 7 / 10
Not my thing at all. It really sounds the same-ish to me and quite derivative; feels like I've heard this type of music a million times before. Shocked to read that most people did enjoy it; seems I'm just in the minority here. 5 / 10
I kinda liked it, even though punk is not really my thing. I'm not sure why this is so low rated on the site, as I seemed to quite like it. Solid stuff. 7 / 10
I've never been the biggest fan of hip-hop, so I went into this album with very low expectations. But I'm glad to report that these have been blown out of the water, as I absolutely digged this album. Again, I've never been a big fan of hip-hop, but this made me love the genre more than I did an hour ago. This is the kind of stuff what I want out of this list, and I'm very glad this was recommended to me. 9 / 10
I fucking LOVE Green Day, and I think that American Idiot is one of the best albums ever made (at least, it's surely up there). I went into Dookie not with the same exact expectations, but still high ones, and I wasn't disappointed at the very least. It's an amazing album, with the big standout track being Basket Case obviously. It's not a perfect album, but it's sure as hell very close. 9.5 / 10
I'm not a big hip-hop fan at all, and this album reminds me why. It's not a bad album per se, even though it is a bit dated, but I personally just don't like this music at all. Still solid stuff, just not my thing. 5 / 10
I liked this one quite a lot. It reminds me a lot of bands like Tears for Fears as well, which is always a plus. I know their biggest hit (which wasn't on this album), but that's about it. This album pleasantly surprised me with its progressive sound and pop music that doesn't sound dated one bit. 8 / 10
There's something about Hispanics (in this case, Cubans) and music. They just know how to make music that sounds fun, pleasant to listen to and full of heart. BVSC is a wonderful and talented group of musicians and this album shows that. Chan Chan is obviously the highlight here, but the rest of the album is just as wonderful to listen to. If you like Chan Chan, I highly recommend you check out the rest of the album. 9 / 10
I like some songs from Lenny Kravitz, one of them being the album's titular track "Let Love Rule", but an entire album proves to be a bit too much. The album overall sounds a bit repetitive, and each song sounds similar to the previous. Even though the album itself starts out relatively strong, by the end, it kind of falls off and drags on a little too much. 6.5 / 10
It's so bad it's not even on Spotify. It's just a bunch of sounds that go on for 1 hour and 16 minutes. Wasted spot on this list. 1 / 10
One of my favorite albums, and certainly Dire Straits' best. Just banger after banger on this one. So Far Away, Money for Nothing and Walk of Life is a wonderful trio to start the album with, and then the rest of the album slaps too. Closes off with Brothers In Arms, one of the most beautiful songs ever created. I have reviewed this album before, and then I rated it a 8 / 10, but it has grown on me since then, so I'll give it a 9 / 10.
How haven't I ever listened to anything of this artist before? She's amazing! When I was reading through other reviews, I saw some comparisons between her and early Elton John (melodically speaking, at least), which set quite a high bar for me, as EJ is one of my favorite artists of all time. But starting with the first track of the album, "Down To Zero", I immediately understood the comparisons and agreed with them. I also agree with the comparisons with Tracy Chapman, although I do like Joan more. Solid folk + funk (fulk?) album, but my only critique of the album - and artist as a whole - is that I don't dig her voice as much as I would have liked. But besides that, definitely a must listen before you die, in my opinion. 8 / 10
Very pleasantly surprised, this is a really good album. I loved most of it, except for the fact that it's too damn long. Cut it in half (or at least throw away a third of it) and it's probably for the better. Will definitely be revisiting this one. If it wasn't so long, it probably would have been a point higher, but alas. 7.5 / 10
So this album has just been removed from everything that I have, apparently. The only place I could find this album was on YouTube, but it was of poor quality in my opinion. That doesn't really matter that much though, since the album is just a lot of sound. Like a big wall of sound. Not in a good way either per se. I did like some tunes, but it didn't come across as one of the albums I must hear before I die.. this should not be on here. 4 / 10
Not a big jazz fan, but I kind of liked this. Nice background music while studying or something like that. Would I listen to it again? No, probably not. 6 / 10
