Funky southern rock. Not a bad track on the album. All quite similar in vibe.3.75 rounded to 4*
Enjoyed it overall, realized I actually knew more of these songs than I thought. 7min intro song was a bit off-putting with a huge lull in the middle but a solid album, plus another 11min track later on dragged a bit. 3.25* Rounded down to 3*
I feel like a should enjoy this more than I do. I don't dislike it, I don't mind the dark gloomy tone just not something I think is go out of my way to listen too again. 3*
Well that was unexpected. I don't think I've ever listened to a whole Jazz album before so I didn't know what to expect.
It was dark, moody, a little bit sexy, but full of atmosphere. One minute I wanted be be sat at a smokey bar drinking even smokier whisky, the next I wanted to be up and dancing.
I think if I knew more about Jazz this would be a masterpiece. 4*
Not one I was expecting to enjoy too much, but damn this is a catchy album. It probably helps with all the covers being somewhat familiar from other versions. Plus California Dreaming is an all timer for a reason.
A bit before my time but you can definitely feel the nostalgia.
3.5* rounded to 3*
I'll be the first to admit I don't really know anything about Jazz. But I had listened to and enjoyed certain stuff, but this album didn't really make me feel anything.
It never really seemed to get going, and as soon as I thought it was going too it changed back.
Nothing bad, but nothing really memorable. 2.5* rounded to 2*
I saw other reviews calling this "pleasant" and that just about sums up my feelings. I enjoyed it for what it was but not something I'd seek out again.
The title track is the stand out, got a great bluesy vibe, if that kept up throughout the whole album I think I would have enjoyed it more. 2.75* rounded up to 3*
Even after 40 years this album still slaps. Rubins production across the whole album is phenomenal.
I've always loved the guitar work on Fight For Your Right and No Sleep Til Brooklyn but I only learnt today that its Kerry King on the guitars. Crazy.
Overall and absolute classic and one I'll keep coming back too. 4.25* rounded down to 4*
I had to track this one down on YouTube because it wasnt on Spotify and there is nothing more jarring that having music like this interrupted by jarringly upbeat adverts.
I enjoyed quite a few of the tracks, but there were a couple where I found the vocals quote off putting. The band delivered big time on every track though.
The cover art alone is 5*
Not sure I'll seek it out again specificly but I did enjoy my listen through. 3.25* rounded to 3*
When I saw the track listing featured both Kendrick Lamar and Kenny Loggins I was intrigued and thought this should at least be an interesting experience.
In the end I started off hating this album, the first 3rd was a chore to listen to. But then I quite enjoyed 'Show you the way'.
There was definitely more that enjoyed in the second half of the album, and there is probably a half decent 10 track album in here, but as a whole it's too long and a bit of a mess.
2.5* rounded down to 2*
This was the exact type of album I started this list hoping to discover. Obviously I'd heard of The Pixies but I probably would have struggled to name more than a couple of songs.
Now I'm starting to think they are alot of my favourite bands, favourite band. You can just hear the influence for so many 90s alt bands and beyond.
Although the styles changed throughout the album, the one constant was the amazing bass guitar work. Phenomenal.
Really enjoyed my listen though. 4*
A really enjoyable album from start to finish and my first real exposure to "prime Dylan" bar knowing most of the hit.
I enjoyed the electric half and the acoustic half equally with Maggie's Farm and Outlaw Blues being the 2 stand out tracks.
Looking forward to experiencing more Dylan as I see there is a lot more to come on this list.
3.75* rounded up to 4*
A pleasant Britpop album that lacks the replayability of peak Oasis or Blur. Still an enjoyable listen.
Would have given 3*, but I'll bump it up to 3.5* just to keep upsetting the American centric reviewers who are angry at the inclusion to British bands they haven't heard of.
Way too much vibraphone!
If you're gonna drag 6 songs out for a 45 minute album I feel like they should be more interesting than these.
Nothing bad, just a bit meh.
2*
Brilliant album. The hits are hits for a reason, but every song is fantastic and the flow of the album is perfect which each song being similar, yet still completely different.
Really enjoyed it. 4*
Not something I've heard before and not something I'd seek out again.
The Neil Young songs are definitely the standouts, the rest definitely didn't do much for me.
A perfectly fine album but nothing that excited me
3*
I don't think it would be easy to make an "enjoyable" album about 9/11 but The Boss managed to pull it off.
The album focuses much more on hope than it does on anger and maybe that's why it still resonates today.
3.75* rounded up to 4*
What a fantastic album. I knew next to nothing about Lou Reed going in but I loved nearly everything about Transformer.
I'm hoping there is more on the list for me to experience.
4.5* Rounded up to 5*
You know how in early sci-fi, everything is trying to be futuristic but the future turns out nothing like those visions so instead they look kinda cheesy and dated? That's how I feel about this album.
I have to appreciate the creativity and the experimentalism but it was more misses than hits for me unfortunately.
I did really enjoy Solsbury Hill and I wish there were more tracks in that style.
Still for a debut where it's clear he's still trying to find his sounds it's at least an interesting album.
2.5* rounded up to 3.
A really enjoyable album, if you didn't know better you'd think it came out during the 90s Britpop wave, instead this might be the album that inspired it.
A solid 3.75* rounded up to 4*
Is it Zeppelins best album? No. Does is still slap? Yes.
More mellow and subdued than other albums in their catalog, but still a great listen.
A very solid 4*s, only because I know there is better albums still to come.
I don't think I've ever been so torn on how I feel about an album. I could either give this 5* or 1* and feel justified.
I found the production fantastic and actually loved nearly every track.... For about 1 minute. But the continuous vocal loop ruined each track. 4 minutes or the same line or two looped again and again just drove me insane.
If there was someone singing, or rapping over these beats this would be a damn near perfect album.
I guess 2.5* seems fair. Rounded to 3*
Raw and intense. Like a punch in the face with a shitload of saxophone. What's not to love?
4*
A short, sharp and overall enjoyable album.
I had too much to dream (last night) and Get me to the world on time are the stand out tracks, mist be why they are mentioned on the cover.
There is a few tonal shifts throughout the album which probably hurt it a little as they aren't as strong. And the final song is quite jarringly bad.
3.5* rounded to 3* because of that final track.
The most average of average albums. I didnt dislike any song, but I didn't really like any of them either. I don't think I'll ever think about this album again.
2.5* Rounded down to 2*
Nice voice, good production, important message, but kinda one note.
If it wasn't for all the spoken interludes it would be hard to tell where one track ended and another began.
Not something I'll revisit.
2.5* Rounded to 2*
I enjoyed this much more than I expected.
3.5* rounded down to 3*
A fun and funky album. Really dug the Jazzy influence on the beats more than anything.
A definite alternative to the gangsta rap that was exploding around the same time.
3.5* Rounded down to 3*
The softest of soft dad rock. Nothing bad, just nothing good. Overall I felt bored.
2.5* rounded down to 2*
Pure unadulterated fun. A great listen from top to bottom.
3.75* Rounded up to 4*
I like Bowie, I like Iggy, I was really expecting to love this but in the end I was a little disappointed.
It was fine, good even, but it just didn't meet my expectations.
3*
I really wanted to like this more than I did. The beats are great, the backing vocals are catchy, but the rapping just didn't hot for me. It's was too 90s cheese, and not in a good way.
Works better as background music but when actually paying attention to the rhymes it falls short.
2.75* rounded up to 3*
Today I learned that Rod Stewart was in a band, and they are actually pretty great?
A really enjoyable bluesy rock and roll album.
4*
I would have liked a bit more variety. I don't mind a bit off sad girl music, but this album could have done with something to break it up a bit.
I didn't mind it, but it's something I'd need to be in a certain mood to revisit.
3*
Only 35 albums in and this is already my 2nd Pixies album. I have to say I enjoyed Doolittle a little bit more as it had more standout tracks.
Although this album played more fluidly and almost felt like one giant track, but in a good way.
3.75* rounded up to 4*
Horny, and I'm not just talking about the brass section. A deliciously sexy soul album from front to back.
