Brothers In Arms
Dire StraitsDid not like. Good guitar playing, but little else. Also, Money for Nothing is a gay slur in it multiple times. I know it's of the era, but uncomfortable nonetheless.

Very punk rock meets funk and rock. Simple, yet effective.
Overall, a fine album. The songs we all know are okay, and the ones that don't have an orchestra just seem like middling rock, with a delta blues song just lifted from it's spiritual roots. Sway is the best song on it, for the mixing and orchestration.
Now that's what I call good hip-hop. So different from what was popular at the time. Very reminiscent of the late 80s/early 90s hip-hop without sounding dated.
Dancy and weird. Good combo.
Decent metal album. Holds up for its genre, but not objectively. Lyric writing isn't strong.
Pretty straightforward blues rock album, with some psychedelic flair. Not enough to make it psychedelic music. Only standout is the single everyone is familiar with, Piece of My Heart. Live audience sounds are an odd choice, but not too distracting. Production sounds live, which almost makes me think the live sounds were an afterthought, covering up for less production.
Fun album, with good production. Style and production is incredibly of it's time. Not my kind of genre, but fun with interesting hiphop elements.
So many punk classics. The only thing dated about this was the vocal processing. Otherwise, v good.
If I could give it 3.5 stars, I would. For a folk album, this does not sound at all dated. Joan Baez is equal parts sweet and haunting, in her voice and in her guitar playing/arrangements. House of the Rising Sun and Rake and Rambling Boy were standouts.
Great metal album. A lot more interesting than I expected. Thought I'd hear thrashy noise, but there are a lot of cool parts in songs. Thick, full rhythm guitar tracking, great bass lines and tone (a la Iron Maiden), and cool. Headbanging all the way.
This album could have just been straightforward rock & roll, but it was that and experimental, with great drum and synth parts. Iconic songs.
Never really got into the shoegaze stuff, but it's great how noisy and clear at the same time this album is. Bonus track version has a cover of Just Like Heaven by The Cure, pretty cool.
Love Riot Girl music. Had only heard the name PJ Harvey, but had no frame of reference for what genre it was, or who it was. Vocals are super dry, making them nice and punchy without being super processed. Great guitar parts.
Cool surfy, jangly new wave. Sounds ahead of its time to me. Not necessarily production-wise, but certainly sound-wise. Great guitar parts, and stylized vocals.
Standout Pop to me. Uses familiar sounds that are in pop songs, but in ways that make it much more different. Works well for me, and makes for a good pop album.
Never made an attempt to listen to Joy Division, and have only ever listened to Love Will Tear Us Apart. Very interesting and experimental sounding album. To me, however, all the songs sound like the same experiment. The voice kind of wears on my, and everything has the same processing throughout the whole album, getting somewhat tiresome as well. Did not make it through the whole thing, but I do know that this group has influenced a lot of other great groups. Definitely not danceable, The Wombats.
Great prog rock album. I like other Rush albums better than this, but this shows their more accessible experimental stuff. (Is a 20 minute song accessible? You tell me (the answer's no)).
Great band, origin of the version of Boy Named Sue we all know. Not a well, structured album, and not a well structured show.
Really cool sound. Kinda Bowie-ish, with great stylish vocals.
Hadn't heard of them before. I'm a sucker for guitar driven surfy-punky stuff like this, and this had a more unique bent to it. Super cool.
Very unique style. Like a carnival version of blues/rock. The ballads REALLY don't work for his voice, but the songs that are undeniably Tom Waits style REALLY work.
Fantastic album. wonderful melodies, one of the best, most recognized soul voices, and great instrumentation.
Decent grungy rock album. Great fuzz sounds. Just started same-y after the first couple songs. Still good, though, after 9 songs.
One of the best voices in pop at that time. One of the only pop stars that could actually sing. Not something I would seek out, either when it was released or now. The songs are decent, but don't care for the style.
Didn't click with me. The guitar is out of tune in Clocks, one of their biggest songs. Just sounds like soft rock.
Great 60s folk rock vibes. Cool guitars, the voice totally fits. Still sounds like rock from the 90s, but has a very different sound.
Similar to the other album, but less orchestra and more blues rock. Great guitar tones, but just okay songs.
Decent 90s rock. If all the songs were like Witness, I would have liked it much more. Definitely like the last half of the album better.
I wanted to like this album, but it was just kind of boring. Not too much dynamics, and songwriting is just okay. Not my style.
Just okay, for me. Got a little more interesting as it went on, but I didn't enjoy my time with it.
Obviously one of the most popular, if not the most popular, reggae artists of all time. Great album, if not pretty same-y in the latter half.
I mean, every other song from this album is a song on the radio at Christmas time, with Phil Spector production. Great album.
Did not like. Good guitar playing, but little else. Also, Money for Nothing is a gay slur in it multiple times. I know it's of the era, but uncomfortable nonetheless.
Good music writing. Lyrics are hit and miss. The bass parts were not well mixed, and not well performed, which stuck out to me.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. The music is very well performed. Chad Smith, John Frusciante, and Flea are incredible musicians. The lyrics were good, when they weren't just sha-ma-na-ma-namana.
Another album that I thought I might not like that much. Very live, to the point where it's pretty apparent that Elvis is singing pretty far from the mic for some reason, but doesn't detract too much from the production. Definitely some hits, but also some unexpected country songs on there. Enjoyable.
So weird, but so great. Equal parts disco, rock, prog, weird lyrics. Great guitar parts, never dull. Super fun and interesting.
Started out strong with the first two tracks, but the more I listened, the more I realized the singer can't sing. That really took me out of it, especially with the longer notes and big reverb kind of accentuating it.
Great lyrics, great hooks. Don't know if he was still a terrible person back then, or if celebrity ruined him.
Decent lyrics. Not my style of music, though. 80's folk misses for me.
The voice is okay. She has better songs on other albums. This was just okay. The meter changes weren't really that interesting, just disorienting.
This was just okay. Electronic album, which isn't my fav genre. Probably cool if you're into samples.
Just good, latin-influenced rock. Definitely heard some recycled riffs throughout this album from Carlos Santana, but still great rhythms and good times.
Not my thing. Great fuzz tones, but voice is too mellow for me, compared to the music. Songwriting is decent, too, as far as chord structure is concerned.
Interesting fusion of Indian instruments and vocal style, but fused with 1990s British Alternative Rock, which I'm not a fan of.
Love this album. Great guitar parts and sound, with a lot of variety in genre, as far as rock goes.
Really enjoyed this one. His voice is great, and the song composition and lyrics are really good.
Great rock that I was unfamiliar with, except for the Feelin' Alright.
Very subtle voice, but great orchestration and songwriting. Doesn't sound dated, really, because of the restraint used in the instrumentation and production.
Good album. I don't really have the critical ear to know if this is a classic hip hop album, but I did enjoy it.
Great electronic album. Really cool parts, and has a break-out mainstream electronic hit with D.A.N.C.E.
WHAT A BORING ALBUM
I mean, this has at least 4 songs on it that everyone knows, and even more that I've heard before without listening to this album. Great fun songs, and nice and punchy, with cool synth leads.
Great pop album, for the time. Kind of like a mix of the Beatles and all the other British rock pop that came out in the early sixties.
Guitar tone is a lot heavier than I remember, making for riffs that stick out a lot more. Chester Bennington's voice is incredible, but Mike Shinoda's lyrics aren't very good. Maybe I don't like the performance of the lyrics. Songs get samey after a couple. Obviously a breakout in the nu-metal scene, but not my style.
I love Ray Charles. Great orchestration and performances.
Very cool album. I think his first, and it definitely has the cool sounds and production that his later albums will feature. As well as some interesting spins on common blues song forms.
Acoustic sad boy music. Did not care for, but respect for Nick Cave.
Beautiful songwriting and arrangements. WEIRD songs. Very good.
Liked the guitar sounds. Bono has always had a great voice. While the lyrics aren't incredibly evocative of their subject, they are still moving and great with the melodies.
Has some classic songs, but not my fav Van Halen album. Still incredible playing, of course.
Didn't listen to this one...because I spent so much time listening to this album growing up. Incredible rock album. Not a stinker in the bunch. One of the last best albums from AC/DC.
Great punky sound, without being just power chords, with a velvety ice pick guitar tone.
Absolutely great metal album. Super spooky, in the horror sense, like what they were going for at the time.
This album is for a certain person who loves 80s electronic. I am not that person.
More rock/funk. Starts out kind of slow, which I don't like in a funk record, and definitely is more in line with the weirder side of funk. Still cool, though. Very weird, especially at the end.
Great album. Soup to nuts interesting all the way through. The Gash was a standout for me. Kinda sounds like the Beatles kept making music together, and it's an evolution of their later stuff.
Great gentle british pop rock concept album.
Most likely revolutionary at the time, but it did not hit for me.
