Reminds me of the time I took "Intro to Jazz" as an elective in college.
This would play well in a contemporary art museum… somebody call Meow Wolf. I appreciated the song names, solid work there. “Mutual Slump” was perhaps made when he was in a slump. It felt like the slump of the album, I couldn’t get behind it. “Organ Donor” is something everyone should have on their driver’s license. It is an average song. “Building Steam with a Grain of Salt” is a great song with a great title. If I had owned a large boombox in the ‘90s, this album may have been on the play list.
Makes me want to be on a beach in Jamaica. Also, I feel like I learned a lot about marijuana from this album. A line that I loved: “Judges smoke it, even the lawyers do”... I suspect Jamaica’s justice system is a little more “chill” than our own. This style isn’t really my jam unless I’m on an island vacation, but I appreciate it for what it is.
Sometimes it kind of lulls you to sleep with the spacey soft rock vibes, then pounds you in the face and wakes you up with some sweet riffs. If one were indeed floating in space, this would be a good soundtrack for the adventure. On earth, it feels just ok.
This album comes out of the gate hot, then settles in for a pleasant ride. Enjoyed it.
What can you say? It's Led Zeppelin. For pure listening pleasure it's average for me and my own personal tastes, but gets an automatic extra star because, you know, Zeppelin.
This one is hard to rate as I have zero meaningful experience or input on this genre of music. Will I put it on to jam out while on a long road trip? No. Is it pleasant as background music while finishing some work in my office? Yes. Is it better than the average music played when you're stuck on hold for a long time? Definitely. The musicians are clearly very talented, and they put out some happy and relaxing vibes.
It's a face-melter alright. Impressive work on the guitar and drums. I'm sure this is good for getting you pumped up for a strenuous activity or rocking out in a mosh pit, maybe not as great for the casual listener.
I'm sure everything about this was edgy and cool in 1987, I just can't find a way to enjoy it now. Maybe as a rebellious teenager I would have been all about it... guess I'm officially an old man because my assessment is that it just feels like loud noise and the various names of band/album/songs are off-putting. It does not leave me wanting more.
Album of the week, and it's not even close.
The whole album just feels epic. The sounds are big and bold. You don’t find this stuff in today’s music.
Turn-of-the-century heart-throb pop at its finest. Say what you want about him, you have to respect JT for the career he has made, he’s a true entertainer. Pure listening pleasure for me is like a 2, but he gets an extra star for the nostalgia factor and for the way he makes every 30-something year old woman turn instantly back into a 13 year old girl with his poster on her wall and his CD in her Discman.
Classic.
Pros: Admittedly I have never listened to a Kanye album before now. I like the sound, it’s fun to listen to, better than I anticipated. Cons: I can’t really relate to most of the things he raps about, and I have a difficult time getting past Kanye being Kanye… I wish entertainers would just stick to what they’re good at.
The first half of the album makes me feel like I'm happily strolling down the street, mingling with friends, kissing my wife, etc. in a Hallmark movie montage. It slows down a little in the back half and took me to more of a Better Call Saul episode black and white opening scene. With the early songs strumming in the background of my head, somewhere about halfway through "The Waters of My Time" it struck me that if John Mayer and Johnny Cash had a musically talented British love child, he might sound a lot like Richard Hawley. There's nothing particularly revolutionary about this album, but it's good listening.
It just kind of felt like some average 70s rock. Didn't love it, didn't hate it. It was fine.
Better than the previous day's 70s offering. Still very 70s, but it feels a little more energetic and edgy.
Great stuff. Not many bands have remained as relevant for as long as Queen. Hard to give them anything other than a 5.
Spotify doesn't have this album, and I'm too lazy to go find it on another platform, so I can't accurately rate the album. I did find another album they made in the late 80s (Some Like It Cold) and listened to that... they created a pretty nice blend of the 80s sound with early 90s hip hop beats, even got some reggae and latin vibes in there at different points. It got a little weird and/or monotonous at a few points, and I'm not sure exactly when I would listen to this music, but overall I liked it.
The sheer number of songs he has written and the stories they tell are just mind-blowing.
I love the characters and story of the band even more than the actual music. For instance: -Jack and Meg met in high school, got married in 1996, he took her last name, and as they launched their musical career they pretended to be siblings for the first 4 years. -They recorded many of their albums in their living room or garage, one album was recorded on an 8 track. -They wrote and produced this entire album in 2 weeks, and then it went on to win a Grammy. What?!?!
I grew up with parents who basically listened only to 80s country. I had little exposure to anything else until I was about 13, so this is right up my alley. I wish my mom had played more Steve Earle and less Dolly Parton/Reba McIntire.
Maybe I was just distracted by other things Friday, but nothing really stood out, I had a hard time really getting into it after the other great albums we had all week.
This album provided decent background music for getting some work done at the office over lunchtime. Not sure I'll be listening to it on the regular.
The Beatles are obviously an icon, their music is catchy, I get it... classic stuff that was huge in its era and well-loved still today. For me personally, a lot of their music sounds the same and I find other genres more interesting. I don't dislike it, it's fine, I'm just not in love. [*shields face from the masses throwing rotten tomatoes at him for a slightly less than glowing review*]
Didn't make it through the whole album, ran out of time yesterday. It seemed fine, pretty neutral about what I heard.
Good stuff.
Interesting...
Just a great album. I've been trying hard to analyze all the albums for my ratings and put some thought into it... I didn't really have to think about this one, it just sounds good all the way around. I know Stairway to Heaven gets all the love, but man I also really enjoyed The Battle of Evermore
I don't know, I didn't love it. A little loud/screamy for me I guess. I'm sure it was super cool to be at the concert live in 1969, probably a real rager. It's just not doing it for me as a casual listener in 2023.
Better than average. I generally enjoyed it. I love the album cover.
Iconic rap. I just don't love rap in general as much as Kyle haha
I'm not even sure how to rate this... feels like it's all over the place. The word that comes to mind is amusing. I don't love it, I don't hate it, I think I'm just sort of puzzled by it.
"Am I on an episode of Fresh Prince?" "Am I walking down a California boardwalk with a boombox on my shoulder?" "Bro can I borrow this tape to listen to on my Walkman?" Phrases that might have been uttered while listening to this album. Does it get any more '90s?!
Classic.
Nice change of pace. Provided some excellent background music for my 10 min nap over the lunch hour, and I thoroughly enjoyed the other 50 minutes while awake.
Not really my jam here. Also, I think this is a Spotify issue and not the actual album, but they incorrectly use Your instead of You're in one of the song titles... couldn't get past it.
I mean, with song titles like "A chicken with it's head cut off" and "Let's pretend we're bunny rabbits," what's not to love, right?! The lyrics are interesting across the board, obvious song-writing talent here. It was lengthy and admittedly I did not get through all 69 songs, but fortunately it came for me on a day off so I had plenty of time and enjoyed the listen.
Who doesn't love some Norah Jones, right?!
I love 90s rock so much, this album did not disappoint!
Mixed bag... some great songs, some mediocre songs. Landed in the middle overall.
Another classic.
If I gave this anything less than five starts, my wife would divorce me on the spot. Also, nobody on the entire list of artists that we will encounter is as big as Taylor Swift right now, and probably nobody else on the planet currently is as famous or influential, so she gets 5 stars on her own merit regardless of my wife's influence.
Big fan of this one.
Parts of the album were ok, but I'm not dying to hear more.
Different. In a good way. Mostly. I think...
meh
pretty good, standard 60s rock, not a bad listen
what can you say, another solid 60s rock album
this was cool and relaxing and different for a few songs... i didn't make it through the entire album
meh
